      Well, then again, they insist on using aluminum bezel inserts on bronze watches, which will induce accelerated degradation on the said insert through galvanic corrosion. Check what happened to the first versions of the Black Bay Bronze when used in salt water. After finding out about that, Tudor has basically lost any credibility for me for the alloys they use. The obvious solution there was to have a ceramic insert.

    Good video. I'm now more convinced that I do not like tarnishing on a watch. I realize some folks like the "aged' look. But it just looks a little dirty to my less-sophisticated eyes. However, I am interested in seeing far much more tarnishing will be achieved. I say, yes wear it in the pool. Wear it everywhere. It would be great to see what it looks like in another 6 months.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 года назад +2

      lol yeah tarnish is definitely not a look that everyone will like so you're not alone! I for one dont like the look of bronze patina at all so I'm wish you on that! But yeah i really want to push the watch to see where the tarnish will go. Summer would have been more ideal but hopefully the winter can bring some surprises! Pool time would make things very interesting for sure while still being a "natural" way to speed things up in the sense that swimming is a normal thing to do! Lots more to come with this 925 for sure👍

    I'm a four months behind you in the tarnish tales. Still honeymooning over it, although I see your point about the warm/cool clash. I've been wearing it most days, and my main "complaint" is that silver is softer than steel. I knew that going in, but I'm a klutz and ding my watches on the reg. It picks up wee scratches and such more easily than steel. Still Loving it though. I agree that a blackish uniform tarnish would be awesome. Water and hot tubs??? I'll do some research... Also, if you decide to get it cleaned, store it with silica gel packs afterwards. It will absolutely minimize any tarnishing while stored. Great video as always!

      Thank you so much I'm glad you enjoyed the video man! Ah yeah the finish of the watch in the early days is just incredible! Have you started to see any signs of tarnish on your 925 considering your regular use?
      Yeah the softness of silver is very much apparent but like you i was aware of that before going in and I actually like that it can scratch easily bc I naturally baby my watches but I want to get scratches on them bc i think it makes the watch look cool!

      @edteach3r 2 года назад +1

      I also bash my watches despite my best intentions not to do so. I really, really baby my timepieces but, unavoidably, they get wacked at some point. This led me to switching to Damasko watches, which are literally still without a scuff after years of wear.

    • @lancelloyd7429
      @lancelloyd7429 2 года назад

      @@thewatchidiot I've definitely seen a bit of tarnishing, but nothing extreme or patchy. I wash it in warm water a couple times a week and it's been in lake water a few times. Still nothing much. But that unearthly glow is less apparent haha. It would be awesome if Uncle Seiko or someone would make an aftermarket silver bracelet to fit it. If it was primarily brushed I think it would be pretty easy to get them to "match" patina-wise after a couple weeks. Regardless of alloy, 925 silver will be very very similar. Much closer than the steel one from the steel BB58.

  • @johnnyguitar6697
    @johnnyguitar6697 2 года назад +3

    Well, a case with 92.5% of silver in it was always going to tarnish, no matter what Tudor said about this alloy. But my biggest gripe with this version would be how easily it scratches, as silver is substantially softer than stainless steel. There's undeniably a "cool" factor about the silver and the bronze BB58, but the fact of the matter is that these are inferior alloys to 316L / 904L steel for watchmaking.

    My ownership of the 925( on Tudor nato ) has been six months now, my experience is…it has taken on a warm silver colour patina. I am very happy with this piece in my collection and surprised that it has not been in more demand. I guess the reason is everyone wants a bracelet and then accessorise with aftermarket straps & that would have been my preference too.

      Ah thats good to hear that youre enjoying your 925 and that it hasnt tarnished too intensely! @@thewatchidiot Some centers will always replace aged dials, hands and insert bezels and it takes a lot of the value of vintage or neovintage watches. Some centers are now accepting recommendations from the owner, but only to a certain extent. They may keep the parts if they're aged but in perfect condition or replace them and allow you to get the original ones back if you're willing to pay 40% of the price of the new part, a very strange thing, to say the least. Some will just refuse to even touch the watch if you ask them not to replace patina-aged parts, a complete lack of standard procedures and that's a really unpredictable situation for the owner. As for external appearance of cases and bracelets they will always make it look like new, unfortunately. It's always a journey, I'm sending my vintage/neovintage watches to an independent, he's busy because he's a really good and honest watchmaker with the right contacts to get OEM parts, but it's a long long wait.

One featured some elements in (PVD?) yellow gold and that mix was really classy. Other than scratches, which titanium has its own way of dealing with (poorly), I'd go for titanium over silver (which I don't suppose reacts nicely to scratches, either).

One thing I have not seen anyone comment on is the movements accuracy. Over about a ten day period of monitoring, it gained 10 seconds, very consistently roughly 1 second a day. Yellowish tarnish is to be expected from a 925 Silver alloy with Zink or Aluminium as an example indicated in the report on "Tarnish resisting silver alloys" published in 1927, it can be found on Google. Metallurgists have been questioning whether the process of silver tarnish can be slowed down or eliminated by alloying and metallurgical treatment for over a century but as long as a 925 silver alloy is used there is only so much than can be done in terms of introducing tarnish resisting materials.
    Also your personal use of deodorants, soap and skin/sweat chemistry in general will affect the rate of tarnishing. This can explain why some people have better luck with little to no tarnish even after months of use.

Have you ever seen an untouched silver eagle coin that tarnished? They sometimes get rainbow colors and can be very desirable. I like this watch.

      Sure thing I'm glad to hear you found it to be straight forward! And thats a very good point you make on the buckle and to answer the question at a glance it doesnt look like its tarnished very much at all considering that its been in a drawer since pretty much day 1. I really should use it as a testing platform!

    My guess is that any tarnish is due to the owner's diet, salt levels, sweat and minerals and so on. I have had mine for 5-6 months and hasn't tarnished at all. Not one bit. Love the watch and the fact that it is special and oozes quality.

    Thanks for posting such a clear and transparent review. I originally loved the sound of a silver watch and read the Tudor saying that “it would not tarnish” and seeing the tarnish of your watch, I would be incredibly disappointed in a tarnished watch that is far different than the original bright white silver color. Unfortunately, the tarnish on your watch will impact your ability to sell that watch and has severely devalued the watch. Knowing from your unfortunate experience, I would not buy a Tudor 925 and invest my money elsewhere. Perhaps you have a recourse with Tudor.

    Over the weekend I went looking to see if I could find a 925, to my surprise found one... fell in love instantly and made the purchase, its my first Tudor and it's such a unique piece, also like you a massive lover of Grey & that brushed look!. Having seen all your video's about the patina on the 925 it something I certainly took into consideration but I know I'll be keeping the piece for many years to come.. and look at it as the watch growing its own character and maturing along the journey with you.

      Oh wow huge congratulations on your 925! I'm so excited for you bc its seriously such a good looking watch as an entire package and the look and feel of it when its brand new is just too good! But I'm glad that i was able to help out a bit in terms of managing expectations bc in the end tarnish can be interesting in terms of something that grows with you but also on the flip side if it doesnt tarnish then itll look perfect and silver forever which is great too! Many more updates to come on my 925 so I'd love to hear about how your 925 progresses as time passes!

    I’d really like to see what happens if you returned the watch to Tudor. My guess is that they coated these watches with some sort of clear protective layer to keep them from tarnishing, but perhaps the coating on many was not thick or consistent enough?
    I wonder if they would simply swap the case out with another. I also wonder if later production models have the same characteristics as yours?

      @CanadianWatchGuy yeah I definitely am very curious about sending it in to see what the process will be like and thinking about the original silver sheen coming back is pretty awesome. However, i dont think I'll be doing it for quite sometime just because I want to see how far this tarnish will go now that i'm already 6 months into the journey! Also now that we're going into winter I think that its going to get more wrist time as well which should help with the tarnish hopefully. I wish I had a second 925 to experience both sides lol!
      Also you ask many legit questions and its unfortunate that we'll pretty much never get answers to them! I would love to know if the silver alloy has changed after the tarnished examples came up and I think it would help make prospective buyers more confident in buying a 925 knowing that Tudor has done something (if they already have)
      Also hearing experiences like @Larry Marin 's is definitely making me not want to take a chance which is unfortunate considering that its just a tarnish removal not a full on repair that needs parts that may be back ordered or something

      @@sifu61 It's called an "e-coat" which is a clear coating used on silver to help protect against tarnish, but that wears off in time. THat's what they do on silver jewelry, they either e-coat it (cheap) or rhodium plate it (makes it look bright white) ....but in time all will oxidize.

    Hi!
    That video is a revelation! Before the summer I had that watch on my wrist, with the taupe NATO strap, and it was hypnotically amazing. But as I can see now, the magic is gone. It must have been done in stainless steel.
    To whom it may concern, I have a 6.69 inch wrist, but the face or length is larger than the width or profile of it. Thing is that the Tudor Black Bay Fifty Eight MT5402 with a stainless steel bracelet looked small on my wrist. Instead the Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925 with a NATO band looked perfect. A curious fact.
    On the video, the first view of the watch shows a gray vintage leather strap that looks much better than the original (and unpleasant) brown strap. Today I got a mysterious email from the Windup Watch Shop and now I can I'd bet double against single that it's the “Worn & Wound Model 2 Premium - Stone Gray”. A truly original and exclusive strap.
    Thank you very much!

    Not sure what Tudor mixes with the silver to make it hard enough for a watch case? Do note that human sweat has sodium chloride (salt) which is reactive with silver. If you want to constantly shine your watch, perhaps the Tudor is an excellent choice. If not, go steel.

    I hate to say it but I feel I dodged two bullets with Tudor recently - I was seriously pondering one of these but took my name off the list when I saw your first video and I almost bought a ceramic but Upticks drama has me glad I passed on that one as well. At this juncture, I still like the ceramic but am dubious on the name given this and Uptick's experience.

    Toning is a natural affect of silver. It is a natural patina that develops on ALL silver items. It is a desirable affect and a natural one when silver is exposed to moisture or air. Look at coins for the beauty that can be achieved in toning. You could end up with a very colorful watch in the end. Expect toning to happen. Or don’t buy a silver watch.

    These RUclips videos where guys wear their watches pretty much on he back of their hand instead of the traditional wrist position always looks so painful. When they rotate their hand with full crown to back of hand contact, I always wince.

  • @vinnym9479
    @vinnym9479 2 года назад

    Not just you, but I've noticed a lot of guys (young/old) wear their watches quite low on their wrist. Almost to the point where if you flexed the back of your hand upwards you'd jar the crown into your wrist. I guess it's preference or maybe just to take a glamour shot but even my fantastic watch man (JohnWalker) recommends wearing it higher up your wrist to stop crown issues over long term wear. (I wear a JLC Reverso no crown guard)..

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 года назад

      Yeah for me its comfort bc i cannot stand the feeling of a watch that cannot move on my wrist! While i can understand why technically wearing a watch low could adversely affect the crown, I do think that its an issue that is pretty negligible bc I've never had any issues nor has my dad over his many years. (especially with screw down crowns)
      That being said I will absolutely use it as excuse to get myself a Reverso! Its an awesome watch, its been on my list for years. The only reason why I dont already have one is because I know myself and I know that it wouldnt get the wrist time it would deserve against all my divers😟 One day tho!

    Have you tried the Polident trick? The watch advisor did it with a Tudor black 58 bay bronze. The bronze goes back to almost new (it depends how long the watch is soaked). Rubber b has a blocked integrated strap that would hide the space between the lugs that is noticeably darker on your watch.

    A great 6 months review of the 925 TWI. It's interesting that like you I was looking forward to the tarnish but I would also have missed the bright silver colour out of the box. As we can see it's sort of between two stools at the moment, neither bright nor dark and I agree it doesn't quite match the bezel, dial or white hands and markers. A tough call, get Tudor to clean it up (maybe they will replace the case?) or see what happens over the Winter but for that you would have to wear it of course or leave it soaking in something that might attack the aluminium anodised bezel in some way. Wearing it would not put me off but I guess I would not enjoy it 'quite' as much as I did. A great video and a great shout out for the G-Shock as well in there. I'm still resisting the Casioak metal.

      Thanks Anthony!! And you're absolutely right I'm just caught in the awkward teen phase of it's life 😂 I think that I'll hold off on sending it to Tudor just because the winter is going to be the main source of consistent wrist time which will make for interesting updates but sending it in to Tudor and updating everyone in the process would be interesting too!! The 925 is stuck in the middle of so many things at the moment!!
      Lol yes Gshocks ftw they completely dominated my wrist for 2 months pushing out the 925 and so many other contenders but yeah the metal casioaks really do look great especially the grey version for me (of course lol) a friend of mine has one and I think I'll be doing a video on it soon but there's just such a giant backlog of videos I want to do! I even picked up a PRX last weekend when visiting my sister in the midlands. I compared the automatic black and blue dial versions, such a well finished piece and very slim for the PM80 (reworked 2824) movement. I got the blue waffle dial.
