I just hope that after Part III, the beyond stories are not Part IV, V, etc. Too many studios have become focused on creating endless series (assassins creed) instead of cohesive whole trilogies (like mass effect). Trilogies are so effective imo, I believe it’s the sweet spot for long form storytelling. I would love to have a cohesive Last of Us trilogy, and then a spin off series.
Wow, the mere thought of how the world of TLOU would evolve and develop with a vaccine just blows my mind. So many possibilities for us to explore and think of.
Imagine the day Naughty Dog announces The Last Of Us PART III, it would be insane.

I would actually love if Ellie was not the ‘only’ one. But that she also discovers another who has the same immunity and 3 delves into Ellie getting her sacrifice story plus Joel’s decision to allow a person close to her that sacrifices herself as well. I feel this would tie Joel back into the narrative, touch back on the choice made in pt1 and potentially see how she could prevent an arc like hers in 2 to happen. Also I realize it would be that cliche but Ellie should have a protector role in 3 but we also get the potential complications of who gets the vaccine that plays a part in this. I think those 2 items plus some Joel flashbacks to the 20 year gap that can infuse themes relevant to the present story that really would be incredible

While I do think this is a well thought-out theory for the future of The Last of Us, I have two main gripes about the "main point": Ellie's sacrifice.
Ellie sacrificing herself to create a vaccine seems to be to be in direct contradiction to ongoing Ellie's character arc; her finally finding peace and closure by the end of Part 2 was, while also inextricably linked to Joel, primarily due to her at long last accepting that she is more than what people (and for years, herself) value/see her as - a vessel through which to save humanity. After Riley's death, all Ellie was truly searching for was a purpose behind her immunity - dying so it could be used for a vaccine definitely fits the bill - but Joel taught her that it's better to pursue happiness in the form of a meaningful life as opposed to a meaningful death, and so, her sparing Abby after finally understanding Joel's lesson was her way of not burning the bridge leading back to Dina and J.J - the meaningful life that Joel "would do it all over again" for. I would personally be more than happy if The Last of Us ends with Ellie taking on the mantle as a leader in Jackson - starting by "replacing" Jesse - and rises through the ranks, becoming Maria's deputy and eventually becoming the matriarch of Jackson, a safe haven for decent folk in a world gone awry, helping heal the world, step by step, in a less direct method than a simple/straight-forward vaccine.
The second, and smaller gripe I have with this... is that continuing to expand the TLOU universe beyond Ellie, her immunity, the vaccine etc. is unnecessary IMO. Not everything needs to be a full-fledged Marvel-esque universe where everything must be explored; sometimes it is best to just tell a story, confine it to a perfect trilogy, and leave it at that. For example, see the Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy; Nolan could have continued to build off of those movies, making Robin the new main character after Batman's retirement as all the pieces are already there... but he didn't.
I’m glad you addressed that immunotherapy is a thing! (Although technically different than a vaccine, it would be very clunky to differentiate in the game)

Fantastic watch. I'd missed that intro 🙏🏿❤️, and fully agreed with this theory. I think in Part III they're gonna have to for sure put a close to the Ellie chapter as much as we love her and have grown attached to her and Joel's journey, it would be a good way for the franchise to not overdo something and ultimately close the chapter on a high. A lil off topic but it's kinda the same way that i don't want the next Red Dead Redemption to keep milking the story of the Van Der Linde gang since we saw the loop and redemption of that story through RDR1 and RDR2 and so any further story in the franchise ideally would be a new chapter with new characters and new protagonists with maybe some returning faces but not necessarily dragging on a story
All good points, Tapiwa. It's definitely fun to speculate about where things will go. Ultimately, I'm just excited to see what Neil has dreamed up, how he wants to tell the ending of her story. I absolutely agree. It sounds both terrifying and mystical in a way.
I have a theory that we will also play as Tommy in the third TLOU game. I think Tommy would want to honor Joel by helping Ellie find her peace and would be willing to leave Jackson to get her to wherever she wants to go. When we leave we would play as Tommy (taking that main male playable character spot). Then when Tommy gets too far from Jackson to keep going we would switch to playing as Ellie, then later on we would get a chance to play as Abby.
This would make the fans that hate Abby/playing as a female character happy and also make the game more exciting because we have seen Tommy in both games and have never had the chance to see things from his perspective which would be important if this is the last game to make it a trilogy series.
I also think that if Ellie dies in the third game there will be a sequence where Ellie sees a vision of Joel and takes his hand. I also think it was important for them to kill off Joel because he would have never let her sacrifice herself. This also makes the game memorable and an emotional journey.
But I also thin that when Ellie bites people she gives them the version of Cordyceps that makes you immune and she bit Abby, so I think Abby could become immune and sacrifice herself instead. This makes sense because no matter how much she denies it Abby wants to start to do the right thing, and finishing her fathers work and becoming the hero and saving people like Lev from becoming infected is what she wants. All of her friends are dead and so are most of the WLF are dead so she has nothing else to live for. Maybe the game will be like a race of who can get to the person who can make a vaccine first and Abby will get there just in time to stop Ellie.
This is why I love your Chanel, you have some really well thought provoking topics, I’m glad you covered this cause you’re right the vaccine is just the beginning not an end goal & much like our real world many would challenge if it’s real or if it works which would bring a new set of obstacles, I wouldn’t mind seeing a story after Ellie’s story wraps up, never thought I would but the thoughts in this video are really intriguing, great video brotha.

Great video man! This is something I've thought about with this franchise as well. Not just in a "post Ellie sacrifices herself for a vaccine" story, but also in the whole 20 years that we jumped past in the first game. Think about how many people from different walks of life that we can get some cool stories told from. Something that really bugs me about modern franchises and fans is how everyone thinks or believes that the characters that show up in the first one or two installments of a series should always be the most important characters (I'm tired of Chris and Leon showing up in Resident Evil). I love the characters from the Last of Us Games, but the world of this series is too rich, interesting, and filled with possibilities (Okay, maybe not as much as like Star Wars or Doctor Who, but you get my drift) to just narrow our focus to the main characters from the first few games.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the possibilities of exploring other places in the world. We’ve only glimpsed a few areas within one country on an earth where probably all peoples have been dealing with the same threat. How have they handled it in India? What about Brazil? Are there some island countries where they’ve managed to eradicate it? If so, how did they do it? We haven’t even seen Canada or Mexico. What if, just before the credits roll on part three, the characters look up as an airliner flies high up overhead?
I am always a supporter for worldbuilding.
Maybe this time the Fireflies would find a way so Ellie doesn't die from her surgical procedure. So she wouldn't die for nothing if the vaccine fails.

It's TLoU with Part II's graphics, animation and gameplay systems. There's likely some extra new content, but nothing like new chapters or added characters, most likely.
What a good question! Man, as much as I would love them to add a few nuggets of new content, I would be very, very surprised if there is anything new in the game. I would certainly be over-the-moon if there were a few treats like that. With the latest gameplay trailer that dropped, I think yesterday, it looks like maybe we will not even be getting dodge or prone from Part II, but we'll just have to see

Interesting video and well thought out but personally i, along with many many other people would not care to see Ellie killed off for the sake of any cure. Don't care for the theme of sacrifice the few for the sake of many regardless of whether the person has a choice or not. Joel felt the same way and that's why so many players agree with his decision even though many others didn't and it was still a selfish choice to a degree.
Yes Ellie was robbed of her agency and in some ways not only in part one but in part two by not allowing herself to let go until the end.
But I feel like her sacrificing herself for a cure would not only undermine the ending and impact of the first game not to mention Joel's decision to save her in the first place but also it would take away a lot of meaning from the ending of the second game.
By the end of the second game she can go her own path now, and she's not haunted by the memories of the past and regret of not forgiving Joel.
Joel's memory is not one in a negative light anymore. Yes she can't play the guitar anymore, but she doesn't even need to because she still holds those memories and that's why those flashbacks keep coming back throughout the story at very specific points.
She understands why Joel saved her. And I think at this point for her not to be able to continue her story in a different way but to still be hung up on the idea that all her life means is a cure for humanity I think is a disservice to her story overall so far.
Her life with Dina and raising the next generation that is JJ and likely others in the future is one of the many other ways that Ellie can contribute to building a better world.
In other words, she doesn't have to sacrifice herself to rebuild a better world regardless of how many fungus zombies there are.
A lot more that I could say but I think the route you mentioned is probably the route they're going to go and I'm not too interested in see the unfold because it does not improve on her arc overall.
I don't think the end of her story should end in her death for any cure. They're making the decision to do that doesn't really actually give her agency at all because her existence would still be hinging on the idea of having to save everyone because others died in her stead.
I think the rest of what you said could still happen but I think there are ways that they could do it without her actually dying and it doesn't even necessarily have to be a "cure" or at least not in the way that it was attempted last time.

Great video and analysis as always, though I personally feel if Ellie just dies at the end of Part III in that way it would've made everything that happened (especially post TLoU1) redundant because the situation would be the same, just with a lot more people dead and lives ruined.
Plus, as I've seen others point out, I don't think the vaccine (iMmUNoThErApY) is what this is about - even in Part I that's not what it was about. I know you touched on this in the video with how the themes from Parts I & II can be carried on after a cure is found, however. Joel's lessons to Ellie I think were that she needs to move forward and not keep living in the past and to let things go.
I also think the games have been showing us something very clearly - this is a world that is not ready for, and probably doesn't deserve, a cure. This reminds me of part of the verse from Shawn James' Through the Valley missing from the reveal trailer way back in 2016, "he said he'd come to save the world from destruction and pain, but I said how can you save the world from itself?"

At this point everbody just assumes that Ellie will fullfill her legacy to bring a vaccine to the world. But here's a thought: What if she chooses NOT to do it after all? The very scenario of even more conflicts you described in this video could be one reason. But another more appealing one that would greatly serve her character arc: Joel wanted her to live. He took the opportunity from her so she could have a life with loved ones who cared about her. Maybe her final conclusion could be that her life is not worthless at all but worth living. So she chooses Dina and JJ over the vaccine. Basically doing the same Joel did. The question that remains after all that happened to her. Is it selfish?

While sweet of you to say, I am fairly confident that I am not articulating anything that Neil & Co. isn't already aware of, as far as logistics and potentiality for their own IP.
Making a vaccine is not really the point of The Last of Us. It's about the father-daughter bond and the relationships and conflicts between people. That's why I don't think Part III will be about that
