- A symbolic pair of encounters tells us much about the dynamic fate of Ellie and Abby, as well as serving as a testament to the narrative craft of Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross. From the medieval folklore of the Maiden and the Sacred Creature to Abby entering the Belly of the Whale, we take a deep dive into the many hidden meanings of the exotic animal encounter connection that Ellie and Abby share in The Last of Us Parts I and II.

Also, I haven't seen anyone mention this - The very beginning of the first day in Seattle, Ellie is describing Joel being drowned by a hunter. And at the end of the game, *she* becomes the hunter drowning Abby, who becomes a sort of parallel to Joel. I think Ellie makes this connection, and is one of the reasons why she hesitates to kill Abby.
Yooo this is actually amazing, Its sad you cant hear the thoughts of the characters in a media like film or videogames, but you can do it in books. Prove that every form of art offers something different
Mentioned this before, glad I'm not the only one who noticed. 👍
Joel was being drowned by a hunter in TLOU and Ellie shot him in the head, basically her first kill. That's why she didn't tell Dina the whole story while they where on the horse, 1/5th of the way into the game. Nice try tho.

I love that you pointed out how the herd of giraffes moving on from the scene representing the finality of Ellie's innocence. I feel like at this point in the story of the first game, the creators knew that Ellie was never going to play the same type of character that she was in the first game. That moment represents the death of that hopeful optimist we know her as.
v.v
i agree. that's why it bothers me when people claim ellie was characterised differently as a complaint of the second game when it's only natural after everything she's been through.
What’s interesting about the scene in part II with the Zebra is that it could be looked at as a direct parallel to Abby and her time during Seattle.
Abby’s trapped by the actions of someone else, Joel killing her father. Similarly to the Zebra, she’s left in a state of rage until someone helps her get free from her trap. Lev’s relationship with Abby frees her from her place with the WLF, mending her wound with kindness and trust while showcasing that the world isn’t all dark and hateful, and that it doesn’t have to be.
Absolutely, Jesse.
@Jesse Mastropasqua ... Dude...bravo!
@@crazyinsane500 ... With that comment, you have the perfect screen name because that comment is not only crazy, it is batshit insane. Abby, in the referenced flashback, also tells her dad, *"If it was me, I'd want you to do the surgery.* Meaning, she'd be just like Ellie and to sacrifice herself if it meant saving humanity. That is not something a "bloodthirsty" person would do. Furthermore, in Jackson...Abby could have easily killed, or had someone in her crew, kill Tommy and Ellie and she let them both live. Again, not something a bloodthirsty person would do. I swear, some of you haters just invent absurd shit out of thin air to attempt to justify your weak sauce analysis.
@@crazyinsane500 ... Good gawd, you're just making shit up to fit your irrational, "I hate Abby" narrative.
1. In that scene where she tells her dad if ot was her, she'd want him to do the surgery, she's like 16 years old and you're expecting her to have an adult type of conversation where she philosophically addresses every conceivable other alternative? Your unrealistic expectations are, unrealistic.
2. Abby has 2 chances to kill Ellie and Tommy and she lets them live both times even though they pretty much slaughtered all her friends.
3. Abby, after spending the night with Owen, decides to risk her life to go back to save Lev and Yara. Then, she and Lev embark on a quest to find surgical supplies so Mel can remove Yara's injured forearm. And she puts herself at great personal risk during this process.
All of these actions, completely disprove every claim you've made.
In summary, you've got an absurd and irrational hate agenda against Abby. You're making up shit which has zero basis in narrative, dialogue, and gameplay.

We are doing two books, of mice and men and heroes. Of mice and men is great, heroes is quite lame and boring but the ending is somewhat like tlou2.
Aw man, I'm so glad you pointed out the symbolism of the whale and the giant squid! I was just looking at the start of Abby's Day 3, the gift shop scene with Abby and Yara, and noticed you pass through those giant tentacles again as you traverse down to the lower floor of the gift shop... and at that very moment, Ellie is on her way toward the aquarium, hunting her. 🦑
That's a great observation, Rina!
The importance I saw in the zebra scene was the line “she’s in pain; we gotta cut her loose.” Can’t think of a better line that foreshadows what Abby and Ellie ended up doing for each other and what the devs want the player to do, too. We saw how much she suffered and wish she had done this with Joel, but we can’t let her go? Game’s a hell of a mirror if you look at it the right way
The unicorn, belly of the whale, whale vs giant squid, the prey animals comparison... how do you notice these things??
being smart. I wish that was me.
Literature class help a lot lol
Its pretty damn obvious if you studied literature, the whale is from the story of pinnochio, the chart he threw up is basic lit, how basic stories work because they have structure. As for the animal stuff its mostly conjecture and personal interpretation i personally disagree with most of the things said here but its backed up reasonably well (ellies animal is a deer imo ) . I do not think the zebra foreshadows the death of abbies friends either but explains the intentions of the fireflies clearly and quickly.
@@thedreamcapture2681 The whale trope started AT LEAST with the story of Jona in the bible. I have no doubt that the unicorn and maiden trope is a real thing, although the connection to these animals and situations is a bit weak. The rest is conjecture to a large extend, but so is most of literary interpretation.
@@thedreamcapture2681 A deer? Why and how? I mean, there might be a lot of deers in the game etc but how do you connect it with Ellie? From character point of view she has basically no touching points with a deer.
This video didn't note the final siting of a giraffe in the Last of Us part II: When Ellie and Dina get out of the blizzard, you will come across the lone giraffe in the game, which appears right before Ellie has sex with Dina and ultimately Ellie witnessing Joel's murder. This final shot of a giraffe is symbolic of Ellie's loss of innocence.
As obvious as it is, I never thought until now that Ellie's encounter with the Giraffe and Abby's encounter with the Zebra happened just a few hours apart from each other.
Those parallels are just incredible, and the unicorn comparison + barbed wire reference from the first game just blew my mind. Also, the foreshadowing with the Zebra and the Giraffe, just makes so much sense that I'm a little mad I didn't realize it myself hahahah thankfully you adressed this on the video!
I also love the fact that animals are not affected by the cordyceps in TLoU's universe. The idea of nature taking over is much stronger when there's a sprawling wildlife, and it shows that life on the planet moves on despite what happens to humans.
Neil Druckmann did mention that when they were initially coming up with the idea of the infected in the first game, they wondered if animals would be infected in a similar manner, too. Can you imagine a large creature like an elephant or a bear infected with cordyceps as well?!? Holy crap!!!
@@eat_pray_porg8450 honestly i am glad they didnt

Author: there is no meaning
Any teacher ever: I object
i love finding out about carefully placed little details like this.
Your explanation of the relation to these is beyond me. Never did I even consider the symbolism regarding these two, although, I do recall the giraffe scene in P1 and thought it was similar to the zebra scene in Abby P2, but I never actually deciphered it to this extent. That's what separates LOU vs Days Gone. Both are very good games with good stories, but LOU is just a league of its own. And no matter how we try to make sense of it all, ND will come up with something totally different. I didn't expect to control Abby. I would only think P2 would just be strictly Joel and Ellie again. LOU is not just the story, it's the emotion while playing the game which draws the player in. This game isn't like a movie, it's like an experience.
I feel the same way, J A. I enjoyed Days Gone from an adventure/open world standpoint, but good god, it was hard to suffer the story, the shallow characters, and people not acting like real people. There was virtually no organic depiction of the human condition in that game and they lost a perfect opportunity for some real tension amidst the post apocalyptic backdrop.
This is what I love about art and stories. To a lot of people it's two emotional scenes with animals, reflecting or exposing the personalities of the main characters. And then there are people like the video author who can draw all kinds of emotional and thematic conclusions in a way that is beautiful and adds even more to the experience.
the serene final shot of the freed zebra and its baby could also be foreshadowing abby's eventual status as a caregiver to lev. both abby and lev were "herd animals." (abby with the wlf and her friends, and lev with the seraphites) and now they're alone with only each other, just like the zebras.
adding on to this, the scene is interrupted with owen bringing the news of ellie and joel arriving at the hospital, which also foreshadows abby and lev's originally peaceful time in santa barbara being interrupted by the rattlers.
1:48 hummm the 5 years in Jackson of Ellie wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. As seen in TLOU2, her relationship with Joel was seriously going down...
Still beats living out in the open world fighting anything and everything constantly. I’m sure it was sunshine and rainbows for Ellie cuz of how the world is, just not when it came to Joel.
@@axelalvarado7439 you are right. Yet many, including Wolf, theorize that after Part II Ellie might leave Jackson and venture on her own. That would be suicidal. Ellie knows better than anyone how dangerous the outside world. She will need a pretty good reason to leave Jackson again and I hope Part III will give us one.
I’d rather have a Joel game. Both games focused on Ellie and her story, but how much do we know about Joel and his story of survival? Neil said the Last of Us isn’t the Last of Us without Joel and Ellie, but seems like it’s just about Ellie lol
@@axelalvarado7439 it’s definitely Ellie story because of her immunity. And Joel is part of it because he fucked up the only hope for a vaccine. My guess is in Part III will try to find a way to repair Joel’s mistake.
Guys, I have a curiosity that I saw in the game, when Ellie climbs to a site and sees Nora's hospital from afar, on the right, in the background you can see the bridge that Abby and Lev fell over, and if you look a little more, you can see Lev and Abby !!
If so, this is an awesome find. I will have to take a look.
@@WolfofThorns thank u!!

i also think that the baby zebra resembles lev though. the after birth that came with the baby means that lev changed abby to being a better person, right after they cut her free from being barb wired she runs off to look for her baby. just like abby did when he ran off to the seraphite island. details you dont think much of when youre playing it yourself but it all makes perfect sense afterwards :D
Another great video, Dan! Great mention of "The Hero's Journey" (and subsequently "The Hero With A Thousand Faces"). The devs definitely intended this. They even said they did a *ton* of research in movies and books surrounding these very subjects.
Small little details like these are probably only noticeable to people who look for them. It’s not in your face like “look here’s what this scene means it parallels the very cool scene from the first game” but it’s more subtle.
@@huskytzu7709 For sure, and that's one of the things that makes this game so replayable imo. I'm still catching things I missed before. The story is like literature in a lot of ways.
@@shauna5395 It's rare to have this much connections and them being a coincidence.
This type of stuff has been in many TV series and often being confirmed by writers. Look at Breaking Bad for example.
Nothing makes me think game developers wouldn't do this. Especially with a game like this.
Even Call of Duty has had this kind of stuff in them and the Call of Duty stuff is actually good as well.
Damn! Incredible observation and analysis. Naughty Dog really put effort into this masterpiece.

Dude, I've just discovered your channel and as someone who finds it hard to articulate how i feel about this game you nail it. Thank you. Subscribed.
This is brilliant, Naughty Dog utilizes animal imagery everywhere in The Last of Us. Other examples include how Joel is often associated with the buck/deer. Examples of this are in the first game, where Ellie is chasing a buck through the woods during the Winter chapter before finding it dead from some strangers. In Part II, she searches for Joel in a blizzard before finding him dying at the hands of Abby. Abby and her friends are also often associated with wolves. Mainly cause the wolf is the mascot of the WLF and that's what the Seraphites call them. One of the more subtle ones is in Ellie's birthday flashback, she sees an exhibit in the wildlife section of a wolf pack attacking a moose (a member of the deer family).
Indeed, yes, we talk about these observations in our Wolf symbolism video--it's great stuff

This is an interesting analysis. I always interpreted the zebra and her young as representing Yara and Lev. The zebra is scarred by the barbed wire, representing the "Scars." And although the zebra is freed, I doubted her ability to survive. Yara's condition with her arm is the same. I also thought the reason Abby dreams about Yara and Lev in place of her dad is because she knows her dad would have helped the two of them just like he helped the zebra. But I enjoyed your video, and you pointed out things I hadn't noticed before or thought about.

I took some amazing screenshots of Abby in the Aquarium, especially standing before the shark mouth doorway. Your spotlighting her passage through the whale and tentacles made the sudden connection for me of the parallels there, too. The aquarium would come to signify oasis and Owen’s desire to return to the light. In the aquarium, the giant, hanging whales are the most prominent feature. The shark mouth is strikingly similar time the whale mouth at the zoo, as if to saw she was fooled. She and Yara descend stairs that wrap through more giant tentacles.

Wow, I'm impressed. That's quite a thoughtful analysis.

Interesting analysis. Ellie and Abby have their own respective symbolic growths in their lives regarding their strengths and behaviors, the animals they encounter. Similar to Ellie cleverly surviving all obstacles and enemies, giraffes can be a bit more difficult for predators such as lions to take down in terms of size and height(unless if it's large pride of them). And like with Abby's unstoppable, beastly rage, zebras sometimes can ferociously chase away predators to defend their herds and their young. In a way, due to both of those characters taking out all of their enemies to survive(and mostly out of revenge), they don't have their own lions, leopards, or hyenas to kill them.
I really like your insights.
I'm beyond thrilled that I stumbled across this channel! The few analyses of this game I've seen so far have been really insightful and fun to watch. Welcome to the channel, Sam. Glad you're enjoying some of the essays. While I didn't necessarily have a notepad while playing, if a thought struck me during gameplay, I would typically pause the game and send myself a quick email by voice command to my phone. the scene includes the line “she’s in pain; we gotta cut her loose.” It’d be a hell of a coincidence if they included that line without knowing it sums up what Ellie and Abby end up doing for each other. And what the devs hoped we could do emotionally with Abby by the end
