    Dan, thanks so much for producing these insightful reviews every week. I thought this episode was phenomenal; Mazin and Druckman really outdid themselves in condensing the Pittsburg section of the game into these last 2 epsiodes, and I was thrilled to see the return of sniper alley. However the changes made reflect the best of adaptation, as the narratively unnecessary bits were trimmed and what remained was tailored to serve the story. In particular, the old man sniper…that scene was as heartbreaking to me as the final one with Sam and Henry (and oh yes…those 2 performances were awards worthy).
    I have seen some comments online to the effect that Ellie not telling Henry or Joel about the bite somehow “proves” the writing is poor or that “Ellie is stupid”. On the contrary, I thought it was brilliant writing, because it emphasized that she’s still *just* a 14-year old girl who now believes her blood could be a cure. This scene will pay off in her eventual anger with Joel after he makes that certain choice at the end of the story, and lead into season 2 / Part 2.

    • @stefr13
      @stefr13 Год назад +3

      Yes, Ellie desperately trying to use her blood to heal Sam was a brilliant writing IMHO. It says so much about Ellie herself, but more important is her awareness that she can save the world and this explain her determination at the end of the episode.

      As much as I enjoyed Last of Us because of its superb story, I hate its Part 2. It reduces Joel from a hardened, smart and cautious survivor to a dumb second grade cast member in a C tier movie who conveniently dies against better judgment for the sake of plot progression.

    • @leftovernoise
      @leftovernoise Год назад +13

      @@MeanMachine1992 People change over time. Shitty writing is when people don't change over time. You ever think what he did to all those people in the hospital, and his years settling down, rekindling his relationship with Ellie might cause him to try and be more kind? On top of that, they literally didn't have any other options when running into Abby. They were completely and utterly overrun with a giant swarm of infected, in a blizzard. If they didn't get somewhere safe, they all would have died right there. Joel isn't invincible and all knowing. Their town takes on stragglers. They say that in the game
      If you don't like part 2 that's valid. But how Abby and Joel run into each other isn't even close to bad writing in my opinion

      While I would love to see Abbey in the finale, I doubt they would be ready to cast such a major role for a single episode cameo, especially with no guarantee of a second season at the time these episodes were written, let alone filmed. Yes, would love to see her, but doubt we will for logistical casting reasons. Will we see or hear sign of her? Now that is something that could happen--and one of the things they could absolutely do is make Jerry Anderson more prominent in the finale, much like his Part II flashback.

    • @darkhumour741
      @darkhumour741 Год назад +3

      @@WolfofThorns That’s true. Fleshing out Jerry more is a good idea even without the context of Part 2, since it’ll make Joel’s choice to rescue Ellie hit harder (killing someone viewers have grown attached to over the course of the episode)

  • @TruthNeverFade
    @TruthNeverFade Год назад +5

    This episode was an absolute punch to the gut for me. I loved how the creators explored this unfortunately small part that people with disability have in apocalyptic movies.
    Especially deafness was masterfully incorporated into this universe and how much more important Henry becomes to Sam. Not only as his big brother, protector and translator. But Henry is also Sam's only window into the world of the hearing around him. This becomes even more obvious when I see their interactions ("What did he [Edelstein] say?","How loud was that?" "What's happening outside?").
    Apart from his little notepad, Henry is the only channel to make his feelings known. It however becomes even more heart wrenching, when we all realized that despite having no disability, Henry cannot survive without Sam either. What a cruel twist of fate.
    Which brings my musings to a whole plethora of disabilities that also would've made outbreak day so much more horrifying. We got a hint at the fate of the infirm/elderly, but what about people in wheelchairs, people with diabetes, people needing dialysis or any other medical procedure? They likely all perished within weeks and months of the outbreak, which makes such a cataclysmic event all the more terrifying. I'd love to see more people with disabilities incorporated into SciFi movies/series, apart from the "fashionable" ones that could eventually turn into a "possible superhuman power" such as blindness or deafness. Note: I absolutely don't want to berate people with either blind-/deafness!

    • @WolfofThorns
      @WolfofThorns  Год назад +1

      I really love your observation about Henry being Sam's lifeline into the World of the the Hearing around him, and you keying into the deaf-specific questions he was asking as events unfolded around them. I didn't even pick up on that specific aspect in my first viewings, and it really does put more tragic emphasis on their connection and Sam's dependency on Henry, as well as that "cruel twist of fate", as you articulated so well of Henry not being able to survive without Sam either. Great, beautiful stuff.

    This was a great review. Really enjoyed how you mixed the show with the game content. You also included a lot of observations that pointed to details fans may not have noticed (myself included) that I haven’t seen elsewhere.
    While it’s hard not to acknowledge that this episode made for very compelling television…I couldn’t help feeling somewhat disappointed with the adaptation and felt this was the first episode where some of the changes clearly (imo) made the show worse than the game.
    Here are a few thoughts:
    I didn’t care for the change in Henry’s motivations. In the game Henry is specifically looking to join the fireflies and the 4 of them are traveling with a common purpose. While Joel expresses a lot of skepticism in the fireflies, Henry’s optimism brings us a refreshing new perspective.
    I remember enjoying the bit of romantic tension in the game between Sam and Ellie. At a minimum Sam seemed to have a bit of a crush on Ellie. Ellie may not have felt the same way about Sam but it’s hard to say for sure and missed this element to their story.
    There was a lot that got cut from Sam and Henry’s story. Some of the most compelling moments in the game which we lost included conversations between Joel and Henry about their memories from prior to the pandemic, Sam’s toy, and Joel and Henry’s tense confrontation after Henry abandons them.
    In their place we got to meet and spend time with Kathleen. I thought you had some interesting takes on her storyline but overall I don’t believe her inclusion was justification for removing so much of what made Henry and Sam memorable. This was the first episode that I started to feel the story was being rushed.
    Outside of Henry and Sam, I have concerns with the overall way they have removed a lot of Joel’s rough edges. Joel’s willingness to do whatever is necessary to ensure his own survival is a major theme in the game and I’m worried they are going to fall short of illustrating this with the same impact as in the game.
    It seems like the presence of the bloater is getting rave reviews; however, I’m left wondering if it wouldn’t have made more sense to leave it out of the show. Enemy diversity and cool boss characters make sense in the context of a video game…but did it really make sense that the infection turns humans into giant monsters?
    Don’t want to sound overly negative. I’m loving the series and this episode proved to be both entertaining and moving!

    *SPOILER WARNING FOR LAST OF US PART 2 IN THIS COMMENT*
    I love how Neil and Craig have been very very subtly planting the seeds for Part 2. Foreshadowing Ellie's attraction to violence and tools of power (remember her obsession with the gun and "playing" with the trapped infected at the beginning of ep 3?) , and having Kathleen die because she refuses to take her brother's advice/pleas for peace and chooses vengeance which she knows is not what her brother wanted for her (just like how Joel wouldn't want Ellie to go on a revenge killing spree in his name). I'm still very nervous about part 2 being adapted to the screen, but if anyone is capable of doing it I fully believe in Craig and Neil.

  • @marcileatherboots1

    Yeah I said on another site that I absolutely loved the character of Kathleen. What struck me about Kathleen as a character was the dichotomy of her soft, almost Kindergarden teacher voice contrasted with the savagery and brutality of her actions. I found myself unable to condemn her because of how much she, and others in group, suffered under FEDRA. The interesting thing is though, groups which start off fighting for freedom often become just as bad or worse than the oppressors they overthrow. And how Kathleen very subtley introduced the cycle of violence so prevalent in Part 2. The best part about Kathleen asking Henry, [paraphrasing] "Do you think he (Sam) is more important than the rest of the world?" What a great way to foreshadow what is to come.
    The Bloater. OMFG!!!! Everything about the Bloater was spot on: movement, strength, and ferocity. Everything was just pitch perfect and on point. I loved how they talked about they had actors go through "Infected Camp" because it definitely made the scene look so much more realistic.
    And finally, the final scene with Henry and Sam made me break down and cry just like it did in the video game. When Ellie put down the pad and it said, "I'M SORRY", I broke into tears even more.
    The weirdest thing about this series is, even though I know the beats and where it is headed, every week I am still surprised at how they're able to re-contextualize things and make them work even better for tv.

      Probably because it's not a 1:1 artifact replacement. He was forbidden from having the toy. You don't see it again until just before his death. The magic slate is how he communicates with the world beyond Henry. His toy wasn't even placed on his grave, since it's in Ellie's bedroom in Part II, so there is very little correlation between the two items.
