next time you attempt 0-60 in an FR-S- turn the traction off (hold the button 5 seconds), dump the clutch at 4,000rmp, rev it to 7,500rpm (careful with fuel cut-off) shift to second, floor to 7,5000rpm again, shift to third and it's 60mph. It takes me anywhere from 6.2 to 6.5 seconds that way. It not a slow car at all, but it's not the speed record setter either.
and your elevation had also a bit to do with 10-second 0-60

definitely gotta turn off traction control. stock it will chirp the tires into 3rd and the chirp alone after 2nd revving out will put you over 60mph like he said. you can hear the engine bog down when he launchs in this video. Thats traction control interfering.

It's not fast but you could've gotten it around 7 seconds, you're literally shifting at the Torque Dip the car is known for, shift it at redline and it goes far faster.

Hi Dave, you shouldn't beat yourself up over the 0-60 runs. One of the worst things about a manual transmission is the more that you think about trying to do a great launch, the harder it is to actually do it because we all have a tendency to over-think it. I know that I have done the same thing countless times when trying to jump ahead of the car next to me when the light turns green.
I thought you did pretty good and I am glad that you opted to go with the manual transmission for the FRS review.

It's not that you suck at 0-60 runs in a manual... It's that the FRS/BRZ are slow cars. Skinny tires, low power output, they are just slow little economy cars.
I understand your opinion, I mean FR-S is engineered for Japanese roads where you need no more than 200bhp to have fun, where in US, there are little place where you can actually enjoy FR-S 100%. Scion should sell tuning kits in their dealers
There is plenty of aftermarket out there for these cars... Turbo kits that actual let this car get up to performance levels above a SMART car. Scion and Subaru dealers should be installing these off the cuff. Because without them, these cars are just too lethargic. I've test drove a BRZ and I found that they have a ton of potential. They need a Turbo and they need wider tires. Given them that, and they will shine. Because without those - I'm sorry but I drove a little MG that was older than I am, and it could dust a BRZ/FR-S.
George Hill Lethargic, lawl... The car isn't that slow, it is just "slow" compared to the likes of the S2000, RX8 and 370z, but please think of actual MSRPs and you'll realize this car has the proper speed for both its intention and price. Just as an example, the S2000 was at least $32,000 MSRP for the base trim. This car is most comparable to a Miata...obviously both cars have low torque but they have revvy engines, neutral handling and are very driver oriented (also to point out, a 6 speed MT Miata is almost $1000 more expensive than the MT FR-S). The GT86/BRZ has perhaps 95% of the Miata's driving orientation and handling, but the trade off is you get an actual coupe instead of a roadster and more practicality due to the additional space the +2 seating and trunk provide. I hate when people complain about the speed of a vehicle and make it seem like such a necessary requirement...a random beat up turbo'd 1995 Civic would stomp on most things on the road today, so does that make everything an "economy car"? Adding a turbo straight from the factory would have only increased the cost for the consumer and potentially raise maintenance costs down the road and wider tires would only slow down the vehicle even more and make it slide less around the road, this wasn't supposed to be a Mustang/Camaro/Challenger.. A lot people rag on the FA20 for its "lack" of power, but they seem to forget that much of the car's balance and handling is directly related to the engine because this car is as close to feeling like a front mid-engine setup as you can get. 100 HP per liter is still a tremendous feat for any NA engine.
Not sure why the driver in this video was getting 0-60 times over 9 seconds, it should definitely be around 7 seconds for the MT. Most drivers and stats report 0-60 to be around 7 from everything I've read.
He got slower times than usual because he's at high altitude. Less O2, less power. They usually get slower 0-60's across the board because of that.

Too lazy to see if it was mentioned in the comments, but if you pressed the trac off button once you will be in launch mode, its not necessarily meant for that but myself owning the car and doing so I got consistent times of 7.1 secs - 7.3 secs (launched off of 4200-4300 rpm, shifting up at 7400 rpm redline. Well rounded review regarding information around the car that would well inform/ influence a "normal" car buyer's choice in buying the vehicle!
May I also add that going 200 mph is fun and all. But the lack of area to do so safely is very present in normal driving conditions. Yeah the FR-S/ BRZ may seem underpowered, these cars may seem like it needs a little this and a little bit of that, but for the price tag these cars are rated at we all get what we pay for, heaps of fun.
Everyone is surprised with the trunk room. I remember reading somewhere that the designers wanted to make sure owners could put the seats down, throw 4 racing wheels in the back, and take the car to the track. Not sure if it's true, but it did stick in my mind.
There would probably be more than a second of difference in 0-60 time if it were done at sea level. But the curves feel just the same no matter how high you are :)
Dave they have the backseat because in Japan where the car is made they get cheaper taxes on cars that have more than 2 seats. They essentially make the car cheaper to produce.

I bought a 2014 FR-S back in August, and so far, its been kind of a pain in the ass. Before I had the FR-S, I had an 08 tC. I could easily fit 5 people (including me) inside. With the FR-S, that's just not the case at all. Anything more than 2 people (including me) is an issue. The backseat's leg room is literally non existent. The back of the front seats touch the front of the back seats. If someone does decide they want to sit back there, which no one does, they have to sit sideways with their legs across the back seats...all while not wearing a seatbelt. The rear windows are extremely small, creating 2 massive blind spots. I actually had to buy 2 mini blind spot mirrors from Walmart. As far as gas goes, I average 200 miles a tank. On straightaways, the car is just...boring. However, this car puts a huge smile on my face when I unleash her on some windy backroads. It's pretty much what this car does best (being purely stock). Strangers always ask me about the car, and what I think about it. I always tell them the same thing, "It's a fun car, but not practical for everyday use". I really was looking forward to putting work into this car, but there are so many better platforms for that. As soon as I get the chance, I'm selling the FR-S for a Subaru WRX Limited. Hope this helps anyone who is looking to buy this car. This is how I rank the car over all:
Looks - 8/10
Power - 6/10
Handling - 8/10
Winter Handling - This car has no business being on the road in ice or snow
Radio - 8/10

Dave, you said you managed to fit your bike in this car. Did you have to take the front wheel off?
I've been looking at the tC over this mostly because of its hatch design and how easily you could put a full size bike in the back without removing anything.
I have trouble getting my 28" bike to fit in my 2006 Sonata even with the rear seats down because there isn't a whole lot of vertical space between the trunk and the passthrough.
WretchedDrake Yes, generally speaking, when I have a vehicle of this size, I have to take the front wheel off first and be careful on how I place the bike in the back. More often than not, it WILL fit. Good question - Dave
Hi, yes the bike fits perfectly, but you must take the front wheel off. Then, the opening is big enough to clear. I have a 61cm Cannondale road bike and it fits easily.
Scion Exec Says FR-S Convertible and Turbo Models Won't Happen
After years of reports indicating one thing, then the other, before swinging back to the first thing, neither a convertible nor a turbocharged variant of Scion’s FR-S sports car will see the light of day. In an interview with WardsAuto, Scion senior vice president Doug Murtha states unequivocally that the FR-S will remain a coupe with a naturally aspirated, Subaru-sourced flat-four.
On the topic of the madly yearned-for turbocharged engine option, Murtha deadpanned: “That’s not something that’s coming.” Ouch. As for the droptop variant (rendered above), it appears no business case could be made that didn’t involve losing oodles of cash. According to WardsAuto, Murtha claims Scion “went down swinging” on that project.
Besides chilling the hearts of enthusiasts everywhere like cold November rain, the news that Scion failed to convince parent company Toyota-which sells the FR-S as the GT86 globally-to invest further in the FR-S signals that the model’s future could be in turmoil.

Haha, no, performance anxiety was not the issue with the 0-60 runs, it is some much deeper issues than that. I will break down some of the technical basics for you, so you can see where to improve 0-60 times for other cars in the future. If you dont want to read it all, the TL;DR is quite simple "drive it like you stole it, rev the piss out of it".
If you want a more technical description, that works more harmoniously with the car, continue reading...class is in session.
First, you need to look at how best to harness the power of a particular car, by finding out where the power is made, and how. Obviously the best way to do this, is with a dyno chart. A simple Google image search with the make and model, and the words "Stock Dyno Chart", should give you what you need. For the sake of simplicity, here is a dyno chart for a stock FR-S for reference...

We can see clearly that the peak torque of the engine is made low at about 2750 RPM. So somewhere between 2500-3000 RPM is ideally were you want to be launching the car, in order to maximize that torque right off the line to help get it moving.
Next, again referring to the graph, we can see that there is a dip in the torque curve from about 3250-4750 RPM, with the naturally corresponding slump in HP in the same rev range (as horse power is a calculated formula of torque output). This dip in torque is intentional, and we can use it to our advantage.
The reduction in torque here will help to facilitate better power delivery after the launch phase. As counter intuitive as that may sound, this is done in an effort to help control wheel spin off the line. Formula 1 cars for example, which perform a standing start in races, will actually use special engine mappings to reduce engine torque output after the initial launch phase of the start to try and reduce the likelihood of as much wheel spin as possible. It is a "poor mans" traction control, if you will. With the FR-S, baring any slight lift to control possible wheel spin out of the hole, once we get moving, and hit around 3750 RPM, we should be able to flat foot the throttle with little to no consequence of wheel spin. Of course conditions will play a large factor in all of this, and that chipseal road you were on, in nearly 90 degree weather, was probably leaning more toward the extreme end of "less than ideal" conditions.
Now that the car is moving, and we have gone through our initial traction phase, and have the pedal glued to the floor in our acceleration phase, we will again refer back to the dyno chart to determining our shift point. Here we can see that peak power is made all the way up at 7000 RPM, and begins to peter out just past that to the rev limit. What this means is that in order to get the maximum thrust out of the engine, you need to rev it nearly all the way to red line. Ideally, you should be starting your upshift right as the needle races past the 7000 RPM mark, and utilizing that extra few hundred RPM, between 7000 and the revlimit, as an engine over run buffer to perform the upshift in. To assist you in this, the FR-S just so happens to have a shift indicator light with beep that can be set to a user selected shift point. This option is found under the "DISP" menu button on the dash. Consult the Users Manual, or any of the dozens of RUclips videos explaining the procedure, on how to set it up.
The final key to swift acceleration is understanding the gearing, and how it works in relation to your cars power band/delivery. On the FR-S, there is about a 2000 RPM drop in revs between 1st to 2nd gear. If you short shift like you were at around 5500-6000 RPM, that puts you squarely into the 3500-4000 RPM range, right into that torque slump in the power band as described above. That can easily add a quarter of a second plus to the total time, just by itself. If you shift at 7000 RPM, that slots you in at around 5000 RPM after the upshift, and puts you right back into the meat of the power band of the engine. So you are constantly making power all the way up to the shift for 3rd.
The same is true from 2nd to 3rd. Granted there is only about a 1500 RPM drop from 2nd to 3rd (as compared to the 2000 RPM drop from 1st to 2nd), but there are still dividends to be made here by keeping the engine on the boil, especially since 60 is reached very early into 3rd gear. So it pays to keep the engine speed high to get peak thrust on the run to 60.
Additionally there are a lot of shifting tricks to getting fast 0-60 times as well, such as flat shifting, but that is needlessly abusive on the car. So i wont bother describing them here, since they are not the sort of things that amateurs should be doing, least of which on a public road.
Hopefully that can give you some further ideas on how to maximize the acceleration performance of a car, and give you some guidelines for doing 0-60 runs in the future.
If you want to learn some better car control, and get a better understanding of performance car control, you should consider coming out to one of the Oregon Rally Groups RallyCross events in Vancouver. Its a great way to test the waters of performance driving at a slightly reduced speed, and learn from some extremely experienced drivers along the way. If all you do is come out and ride along, you will walk away smarter for having done so. If you can get behind the wheel, and try it yourself, the knowledge gained will prove invaluable on the road.

i think driving stick is extremely fun on the highway but driving in stop and go traffic is irritating to me, especially since i get annoyed by some drivers a little too easily. I like the thought of being able to exploit the power of your car with a manual transmission but the benefits of an automatic as a commuter car out way the pleasure of the manual on a winding open road. Plus with the new "manual" option built into newer automatic cars you get that feeling because you are able to downshift and red line with it, albeit its not exactly the same. If you plan on building a track car definitely go with the manual but other wise id take the easy way, unless youre one of those purist guys that would get made fun of if you showed up to a friends with an automatic lol.

Lol, I'd remove them. And maybe remove the carpet and insulation too. Also, what I love about the FRS is that there are no buttons on the steering wheel so it's easy to put an aftermarket wheel.

You shift way too early 6k is at the sweet spot keep holding til 7300rpm. I had one didnt remember it being that slow

That's horrible shifting... who shifts at 6k rpm at a 0-60 run. This is a 7.4k redline car...
