I can leave 12 ft long black strips on the pavement when I drop the clutch at 4500k RPM in stock tires. I can also hit the rev limiter in first gear, and churp the rear wheels as I upshift into 2nd at every stoplight without going at speeds that could land me in jail. I love it. I’m sure I’ll love it more with and additional 50hp/50lb.ft. But as it is, it’s a car that makes me happy every day.
Alex I just wanted to say that I think you do some of the best auto reviews out there. Very informative, straight to the point, and unlike a ton of other reviewers out there you do your homework before you do your review. Keep up the great work, looking forward to more.
I like the stop sign at 15:53 where you stop so you could take a really good look at the gnarly trash can ! Seriously ... I just love you reviews ... No nonsense, In depths ... Great job
this car is my goal. im 19 and know nothing about cars (girly girl). your review however has been so informative and im now definately purchasing this car in a few weeks!! thank you!!!
Hi Alex, great review. I have a 2013 FR-S and I recently ungraded the stock Michelin Primacy HP tires to the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires (on the stock rims.) Both are good tires but the Primacy tire is optimized for mileage, whereas the Pilots Sports are optimized for all weather performance and stick much better in the corners. Consumer Reports loves the Pilot Sport A/S 3 tire and I can see why. They made a beneficial difference in handling and I think they should be the stock tire on this car. BTW, I am in my sixties and have no problem getting in and out of this car, but I am a skinny dude at 6', 190 lb.
Juan Cuara I bought them at my local Costco. At the time they were $100 off for a set of four, so about $500 total. My FR-S is now a beast in corners, and we have a lot of those here in Northern California. Highly recommended tire. Here are the datails: .costco.com/product.aspx?ItemNo=786382&SearchID=e03f6263-4b50-4ae5-9e7c-0a6944adb98e
Great review. The Scion FR-S/BRZ kind of reminds me of my old 1974 Datsun 260z. It wasn't as fast as my friend's "Smokey and the Bandit" Trans Am or my other friend's 1979 Chevy Camaro Z28, but going 100mph in it was way more fun than their cars.
tabcan Alex does terrific reviews, this is definitely a good everyman review; Chris Harris did a great review of the car at launch. No request for more power, and a huge smile driving it and discussing it after the drive (on a race track).
Hi Alex, excellent review, I own the FR-S and I find it that you nailed all the features in a very objective and honest manner. I have to say: I don't like the part where you mention getting in and out of the car in relation to the age (20, 30, 40)... Let's be honest, there are some athletic people over 40 that have no complain getting into this car, and there also exists the Lotus Elise and similar cars that a true enthusiast will not mind the "snug" feeling inside the car, as well as getting in and out. FR-S may be small, but it's very wide. The driver and the front passenger will feel really nice and comfy (if they don't mind the sporty ride). I really enjoy your reviews, and find them the most helpful of all the other, some even much more popular reviewers like Motor Trend etc. Thanks for this video.
Also, I'm curious to know what made you say that Miata handles better than the FR-S. Could you elaborate on that? When I drove Miata, I felt there was a lot more body roll then the FR-S, and it was not as precise as the FR-S in terms of steering and not nearly as confident in terms of cornering. I only enjoyed the smaller size of Miata, but thought FR-S was way better composed in comparison. I'd say Miata was more responsive, but not positively- it felt twitchy when cornered aggressively, due to that body roll. I had the same impression from the Honda S-2000. It must be the fact that the two are convertibles vs. FR-S obviously not. Sorry for the frequency of comments here :)
NemanjaGuitar The Miata/MX-5 is lighter than the FR-S by 250lbs which may sound insignificant but it does make a difference when we're talking about a car that only weighs 2,482 (the MX-5 curb weight). The MX-5 feels a little lighter despite the body roll (which is certainly more pronounced than the FR-S). The MX-5 is tuned differently, it is tuned for a more neutral characteristic rather than oversteer like the FR-S is this makes it a little more predictable on the road but a little less fun on the track. The MX-5's steering is very connected and faster than the FR-S. While they are both 2.5 turns lock to lock, the lock-to-lock turn is much narrower on the Mazda which means the steering can feel a little more "twitchy" but I tend to prefer quick steering ratios. The MX-5 and the FR-S have very similar road holding numbers but my preference is toward the Mazda for daily driving.
Alex on Autos Sure, that makes sense. As you say it's a matter of personal preference, and I don't think it's a "better handling", but rather different. I agree that the Mazda is easier for daily driving, certainly more forgiving and neutral. FR-S feels like a shoe that never quite got broken-in, and it has it's own, strong temper no matter what, but it makes you kick the ball no other shoe ever will :) Would you agree with me that FR-S, in comparison with Mazda, is asking for a more deliberate input on everything: steering, shifter, brakes, everything. It just asks for a higher level of awareness when driving, but it also rewards the driver more than the Miata, especially on the track? This is why I believe the FR-S, especially with the manual transmission, ends up being owned by only a few devoted hard-core driving enthusiasts.
NemanjaGuitar The FR-S certainly "drives heavier" but I don't know if I would exactly say it is more rewarding on the track. On the track I actually prefer the MX-5's quicker steering, even if the extra body roll has to come along for the ride. If we're talking about stock configurations the MX-5 and FR-S are so close in trap times on professional tests that I can''t really call it one way or another. Both are very competent and appeal to slightly different folks.
Alex on Autos Yes. It's again about personal preference. FR-S beats Miata in every way for me (which is why I committed to one). When comparing the handing of the two, a lot has to do with the fact that in Miata you actually sit almost on top of the rear axle, while FR-S puts you right in the middle between the axles. This alone gives me a lot better feeling of control and that oversteer biased suspension tuning of the FT86 platform never really surprised me, unless I wanted it sideways anyway. And after all, it was built to appeal to drifters out there. I do feel Mazda is a safer car to drive all-around for most people, because of the natural oversteer tendency of the FR-S, but with the traction and stability control on, it will be very hard to lose control anyway.
Best and most concise review i've seen of this car. Just one question: Where is the 2015 model review? Title says 2014/2015. I already got a 2015 FRS but you should still do at the very least an update video review on the 2015 model detailing the main differences to those who don't have one.
Victor De Vincenzo really... why would he go through the trouble of reviewing the same car to point out a few tiny differences? can't you just google it?
Very, very thorough analysis. One important decision point for me is: The car rides really rough and stiff making it a questionable choice for a daily driver. But I had to rule these cars out anyway, even before test driving one, because I am 6'2" and like to sit up really straight, (and without back support when I pull over to meditate in my car). There is just not nearly enough headroom for me in an FRS or BRZ. I am driving a new Mazda 3i Touring and the ergonomics work great for me. I just wish Mazda would make a rear wheel drive sports sedan with about 215+ horsepower. That sounds like the car for me.
Jessica Rose From my personal experience owning this car for about a year now, daily driving is fine. But if you have winter months where it snows you may run in to some trouble. But overall you can use it as a daily driver.
This car seems to be made for me, except for a few key points: 1. I appreciate a quieter ride, particularly when dealing with factory audio systems. 2. I love torque and would prefer the option to maintain highway speeds at low RPM. 3. I am unwilling to ruin my financial future just to "afford" a car which would cost much less if the entire industry had not moved on to making road going washing machines. Basically, the hachiroku is the ultimate illustration of how little I have in common with the "average new car buyer."
fr-s owner here: I get 35+mpg on highway with manual, EPA ripped that estimate of 30. Yes, the rpm is about 2800 when at 60mph in 6th gear, but it's such a low-drag car and also very light that you don't mind any of it. Really, only concern comes in the winter. Winter tires are a must with this car, and a couple sand bags in the trunk too. The car is a real joy to own, and no problems so far. Also, 2013 models are still going on sale for as low as $22K. Mine was not more than that :)
NemanjaGuitar Hello sir, could you please elaborate more on how the FR-S does in the winter? It is by far the number 1 car on my list to buy but it's almost winter
My crazy idea for my next BRZ is change the diff ratio for lower highway cruise rpm and add a supercharger If you are in shape, you can get out fine at 40; I get in and out of my RX-8 just fine and there is a Culver's drive through where the roof of the car seems to be below the bottom of their window lol
Hello Alex. What are your thoughts about the Mazda RX-8? You've mentioned that you've been to Laguna Seca, so you've probably put one through it's paces. Some of your colleagues on TTAC have reviewed the RX-8 and even compared it to the FR-S. I use to own an RX-8 and ended up replacing it with the Nissan 370z, but I still miss the RX-8 for it's handling, comfort, and styling. It's not always about ridiculous power. The Miata is fun too, but not quite as livable.
Alex on Autos can u please review the 2015 ford mustang, love the way you reveiw cars, and im considering the scion frs and the mustang, please review the mustang...
So it looks like the spirit of hachiroku was adequately captured. Unfortunately I am having a hard time justifying this car for myself. If I were the guy who visits illegal races in Fremont on Tuesdays, or barreling 60 mph around Boulder Creek, then perhaps yes. But I don't.
Good review, thanks for sharing. Where can I find the specs on the differences between the 2014 vs the 2015? The 2015 has moved to a more balanced approach and the car is now less tail happy. I prefer less tail happy as I'm not a drifter, but rather an 40 something just wanting the best handling car without having to mod the bejesus out of it. Also, I'll agree on the handling, it'll spank the bigger faster cars in the tight corners, but one straightaway and they toast me with their power. I have a 2014 FR-S base fwiw.
Whew I dont feel bad about not connecting with this car. I don't live near any mountains and I get to the track maybe once or twice a year tops. I am a highway slicer. most definitely, the Japanese were always a little more refined! Z's are legendary!
Keep up the good work Alex!

tabcan Alex does terrific reviews, this is definitely a good everyman review; Chris Harris did a great review of the car at launch. No request for more power, and a huge smile driving it and discussing it after the drive (on a race track).
Excellent review as always. Your style and attention the details that matter most is fantastic. Great job!
Spot on about the Seats it is indeed very narrow in the shoulder area.
Nice review, I know you were testing it stock, but one thing to note is that a new set of rubber drastically improves the handling of this car

The thing about the ages for this car... priceless. And it's true! It's really more of a car for 18-21 year old kids.
Could you afford a scion frs at 18-21? Because im 19 and i cant... but when I hit 22 though :D
John Koch my friend is 17 years old and he brought one of those car recently

Someone needs to review the 2015 FR-S with the better front end suspension

The RX-8 is more liveable than the FR-S in my opinion. It's a bit faster, a bit less hard core, but a bit better rounded overall.
i prefer the Br-z headlights to the fr-s.... Too much chrome for my taste.. is there an aftermarket set that looks like the br-s's?
im 18 years old 6'3 and 215 pounds would i fit comfortably in this car?
Any plans to review the new WRX?
so the only way i can put it in reverse is to pull that ring up and over?
Alex on Autos can u please review the 2015 ford mustang, love the way you reveiw cars, and im considering the scion frs and the mustang, please review the mustang...
Yes please review the mustang!
I hope to soon but I don't have any exact dates yet.
Please do a review of the current BRZ Alex!
In a future video, I'd like to hear your thoughts between a BRZ and the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata coming this summer.
I actually never thought a car would have seats that fricken low to the ground 0_0
The FRS loses value quickly which is good and bad. Would this be a good daily driver car?
Any plans to review a WRX, Alex?
The best design , good engine Only one things Tyres noise isolation is terrible 👎
Good review, thanks for sharing. Where can I find the specs on the differences between the 2014 vs the 2015? The 2015 has moved to a more balanced approach and the car is now less tail happy. I prefer less tail happy as I'm not a drifter, but rather an 40 something just wanting the best handling car without having to mod the bejesus out of it. could you do a video to show how to use paddle shifters
im pretty sure you can find enough vids on youtube
Heeeey! I'm 41 and get in and out of my BRZ with ease!
Whew I dont feel bad about not connecting with this car. I don't live near any mountains and I get to the track maybe once or twice a year tops. I am a highway slicer. My Z fits the bill a lot better. It's a shame, because I like what this car is about and WANTED to connect with it. But where I drive, it's just a little too slow.
To be fair though, I think with 500 more ccs and a powerband biased more towards torque, as well as taller gearing, it would probably be perfect for someone like me, and have broader appeal. Big 4 banger RWD cars work great... look at the 964 and the 240SX...
excellent point there!
I wish it just had a bit more displacement.
Hey could you do 2 reviews on the lexus ISC and Volkswagen Eos
So, Alex on Autos, from your mentioning Miata repeatedly, should we understand the review of the 2015 is coming?
I'm sure it will at some point, but I was comparing the FR-S to the existing Miata.
True, but I assumed you wouldn't be reviewing the car in its last year before refresh.
This car is more for drifting than track
WarmSoftKitty I've drifted cars with 70 less horsepower. It is really more dependent on the rear tires than it is power. The brz/frs are equipped with prius tires, which do not have a lot of grip, so they drift quite well.
@AlexonAutos even the base BRZ has HID headlamps as standard.
I'm 49 and I was wondering how much worse it may be getting in and out of relative to my 300SL, and it turns out they're about the same (I'm happy). I'm also short, Alex is not lol.
You are the best
it's really good car,but it kind of a little bit expensive in china, wish someday could own it
Really considering a FR-s, because of the look plus decent boxer motor? I really dont wanna be a civic, or Subaru noob.
The Subaru BR-Z is exactly the same car with more standard Features.
How does it do on speed bumps?
xboxchildgameplays More compliant than my friends Saab 9-3 Aero, or a Focus RS.
whats wrong with getting it automatic?

That's gay

I absolutely love my BRZ
Alex farted in this review.
I don't do donuts! I eat them!
