    I hate to be the person to point out a mistake on a video that I really liked, but you mentioned at 3:30 "Toyota's 2.0L boxer engine that was co-developed with Subaru". From everything I've seen on the power train it's Subaru's engine entirely straight out of the forester, but with TRD (Toyota) port injectors, the combination = great. I can see how easy of a mistake it is the block says Toyota and Subaru but the badge on the car says Scion. again just trying to inform what I've heard not just pointing out a mistake, But great video!

    I hate how people call the frs/brz/gt86 not a true sports car, just because it lacks power. And then compare it to cars such as the s2000/ Nissan z series/and so on. What defines what a sports car is? Better yet define the word sport- an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Now let's define car - a road vehicle, typically with four wheels, powered by an internal combustion engine and able to carry a small number of people. Now let's define sports car - a low-built car designed for performance at high speeds.
    Now where in that definition does it say the sports car has to be high horsepower? It doesn't what it defines is a car that performs well at high speeds, which and frs/brz/gt86 is capable of. Regardless of how much "power it has in stock version.
    Your blurred idea of what a sports car is, is like saying golf isn't a a sport because it doesn't require the same extreme physical effort like perhaps hockey/football, tennis does. Which we all know golf is a sport, a sport that is also played on a professional level as well as a fun level, just as hockey/football/tennis is.
    I rest my case.

    • @StaffordLewis1
      @StaffordLewis1 9 лет назад

      Brad Bird A true sports car got to have some power, handling and compete with other cars. Frs handling is good but it underpower and cant compete!!! I used 350z/370z and Honda s2000 for my examples because they have some horsepower and very good handling and compete with other cars.

    • @bradbird8913
      @bradbird8913 9 лет назад +4

      Definition of a sports car defines, a car as a low-built car designed for performance at high speeds. Explain to me where in that definition that it defines a sports car as needing a certain amount of power or higher to be a sports car. Oh right it doesn't, to be a sports car it just has to be designed to perform better at higher speeds. And hence forth of videos of the frs as sure as hell performs well at high speeds around corners. Of you want to argue the fact make sure you are able to back of your shit with definitions to define what certain things mean.

Since it snows here in Chicago, is not suitable to drive in the ice and snow. Coundnt afford a second car, so had to trade it for a jeep wrangler. I do like the jeep! But i had way more enjoyable driving in the frs, i keep saying myself someday i'll get a good used one again. It was a fun little sports car😎👍

      +Jeremiah P First and foremost, thank you for the kind words, Jeremiah P. We truly appreciate it. Now, on the other subject, we feel you with the rear drive sports coupe. Unfortunately, we wouldn't be totally honest if we didn't say that might be a stretch to get two kids in cars seats in that car with people in front. Especially if one of those child seats is rear facing. We all know the smallest child takes up the most space in a car. LOL But at any rate, stop by your local Scion dealer (well, soon to be just Toyota dealer) and check it out to see if your car seats (and legs) fit. It really was a fun car! Comment back on here if you get it or even if you check out the car in person with the car seats. We'd love to hear your thoughts. Thank you for your comments and thanks for watching, too!

I may buy one in the future but I'm also concerned about specific years and I know that there was a recall for 2013. Any thoughts on that? I've also heard the newer ones have better visibility. Oh, and why would this engine need premium?

    @ Statford Lewis you just want to argue all day long, to get your point across and be right. The way I see it is everyone else disagrees with you. And so does the guy who made the video. Fact is, the frs can out perform a shit load of cars even your said examples. It is a "true"low powered sports car. Built to be modified to one's desired taste. At the end of the day I would rather spend 25000 on a car that I plan on modifying then spend 40000+ on a car to do the same thing. At the end of the day. I can get the same amount of power and looks for less. It doesn't matter how much power a car currently has most spend their time ripping it apart and rebuilding with new parts to create a faster car. Stock doesn't mean anything these days it's what the car can become.

    • @StaffordLewis1
      @StaffordLewis1 9 лет назад

      Brad Bird As I was saying in my pervious comments a turbo frs will be a true sports if it has a turbo. A stock frs needs a turbo since it is underpower. I already made my point across that's why everyone haven't respond back to me in weeks!!! Everyone don't want to admit that the frs is a little sports car with good handling and underpower.

    • @bradbird8913
      @bradbird8913 9 лет назад

      My point made all you wanna do is argue but fact is its like 10 to 1. Regardless of whether it needs or doesn't need a turbo fact is you can go out by a turbo and put it on. Problem solved. No one said it that more power isn't needed. More power is always more awesome but straight from stock, it's alot better for power gain to go buy a turbo rather then have a small pathetic one pre installed by the manufacturer.

    • @StaffordLewis1
      @StaffordLewis1 9 лет назад

      Brad Bird If you read my previous comments my points made everyone look bad that's why they respond back. Frs needs a turbo so it can compete with other cars since it is underpower. It only needs a least 300hp. There are some turbo options for FRS at 5k and a couple at 6k. When you are going to upgrade turbo from n/a you got rebuild the motor so you wont blow your engine!!! People already upgrade turbo from n/a without rebuilding the motor and the motor didn't last that long, Google this "rebuilding motor to upgrade turbo scion FRS" and click FRS300 Rebuild Has Begun..Blown Motor to Built Monster - .

    • @bradbird8913
      @bradbird8913 9 лет назад +1

      Incorrect, you do not need to rebuild the motor. As most new turbos, especially bolt on systems have already been tuned,to optimize the engine without causing issues. What you need to do, is re-map the ecu, in order, for the engine to register the added power, and optimize the other areas like air flow and shit.... clearly, if they blew the engine, then they didn't remap the ecu. Causing air flow issues, which is why they needed to rebuild to replace parts that got fried.

    • @bradbird8913
      @bradbird8913 9 лет назад +2

      Oh and your so called Google look up is a forum, which does not specify what happened to cause the motor issue. And FYI he was also using a full blown turbo, which was untuned which is half the reason it failed. When you get some education on cars rather then sending people to look at useless shit. Then come back with your opinion and input. Clearly you don't know shit about cars.

    Is it a good car to daily especially if I live in Canada where there’s a lot of snow in winter?

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  3 года назад +1

      As long as you have the right tires on it, this car should be fine, Adam Faiq. Now, if you live in an area where the roads aren't treated for snow or where they don't get plowed very often, I would suggest something with AWD or 4WD. But if the roads are maintained and you get some good winter or snow tires, this FR-S should work fine. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

  • @honestycounts9352
    @honestycounts9352 9 лет назад

    Its a nice car AT FIRST, but from what I have learned about it from other owners is that after a few months of owning it, they become REALLY TIRED OF THE HIGH NOISE LEVELS inside the car. Go on a long road trip and the loudness of the interior gets really tiring for them, so most of those owners end up selling the car to someone else.
    My solution to that = remove the pipe from the engine that pipes in engine noise into the cabin, that should fix that.

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  9 лет назад +1

      +Honesty Counts We appreciate your comment, Honesty Counts, and so we figured we'd add a little insight to it.
      Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending upon how you look at it), noise is a common trait of many sports/performance cars, both inside and outside of the cars -- especially those that are more performance-based, no matter the price. A primary reason is because sound deadening material = weight, which is always a "no-no" for performance. Luckily, there is a category known as GT (Grand Touring) where you can have your cake and eat it, too. These cars typically provide a mix of powerful engines and luxury appointments (hence, the quieter interiors) that allow for a more pleasant long distance drive. The Scion FR-S is not purposed for that. Neither is a Camaro ZL1 or a Ferrari 458. (Yes, extreme examples, but cars that follow the same principle and are VERY loud inside.) There are other choices available for those who want something more civilized for every day driving, but if a true sports car (that doesn't cost an arm and a leg) is what someone is looking for, the Scion FR-S is currently one of the best examples available in the $25k price range. Thanks for watching!

    i wanna know how much the down payment is plus how much the payment is for every month. can anybody answer that?

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  9 лет назад

      ***** Hi Saw Snipy. Down payments to purchase an automobile vary from vehicle to vehicle, as well as a from a person's credit to another person's credit. Not to mention, how much a person can afford to put down. Obviously, the more you pay as a down payment, the less you will have to finance, making your payments lower. A typical amount to use as a down payment is around 10% of the vehicle cost. So if the car is $20k, a down payment of $2k might be paid up front. Keep in mind that many people pay more than that, if they are able, to keep their payments lower.
      To calculate your estimated monthly payment, many manufacturer websites have payment calculators that allow you to input your interest rate, down payment, vehicle cost, and even trade-in value (if applicable). You also include the length of the loan or lease and the calculator takes care of the rest. Here is a link to Scion's payment calculator: www.scion.com/buy/payment_calculator/
      We suggest that you give the calculator a try, inputting different amounts for a down payment so that you have an idea of how much money to will need to purchase the vehicle. Keep in mind that you will also have to pay for insurance, as well. And if you find that the car might still be a little too expensive, start saving what you think your monthly payment will be before you purchase, then use that money as a down payment or add it to the down payment you already have. And if that doesn't seem to work for you, consider certified preowned. That'll save you some cash, too!
      Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    would this car be a good choice for a student in college? or should I just stick to my honda civic lol

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  9 лет назад +1

      +Javier Herrera Hey, Javier Herrara. Heck yeah, this car would make a good choice for a student in college! It's a Scion/Toyota so it should be reliable and inexpensive to maintain, the rear seats are small so you can't fit a bunch of your friends in back, and it has a small 4-cylinder engine to help keep insurance costs low. LOL
      Of course, a Honda Civic makes a good car, too, especially if you already own one. We say wait till you get out of school, then buy a nice new shiny FR-S (or whatever else floats your boat by that time) once you get your first "real" job! But as car guys, we have a hard time arguing the purchase of a car, no matter when it occurs. Thanks for your comments and for watching, too!

      Not a weird question, triggerhappy 830. We actually get asked that quite a bit. While Chris likes to say he's of "average height," we figure he's around 5'8 or 5'9. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

      I've been in one, I'm 6 ft tall. There's plenty of room but just as important, you can sit low down in the car. Like mid engine low. The seating position is proper.

      +AutoAcademics Devin is referring to the "Crickets" or "Chirping" noise that many FRS/BRZ had experienced. If you look up FRS crickets or chirping you can find plenty of videos on it. Your car sounds much quieter than many other videos I have seen that had the cars "chirping." The best explanation I could find on a forum was "This is what I was told; there is a high pressured direct fuel modulator. I forgot the exact name of the part, but this part helps improve fuel consumption. He told me that this part makes chirping sounce when the fuel flowing through is low and the engine is warm, hence, there comes the chirping sound when the car is idle. He said it has something to do with high pressure that it operates in. So I put his reasoning to test. When the sound was so loud, I gave it a little gas just as you do when you rev match. And then the sound went away completely and then it came back when the rev dropped. I really hope Subaru does something about it very soon."

    why the fuck would you buy a car that you need to push it more to get the same functionality, i dont wanna have to push my car 50%+ every single day, pushin it just to get by someone or just up to speed.... Also, the 70 mph at 3k rpm is lame af, i dont wanna be pushin my car that much just to drive it, really wears down on the engine and wont last as long... i wanna get this car but the engine is upsetting me

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  9 лет назад

      +OfficialVanDyce For typical daily use, you do not have to "push" this car that hard to get it to perform rudimentary tasks like accelerating to highway speeds or passing other cars, as this is not your run-of-the-mill economy car. 200-hp is more than what your standard compact car provides and is even more than many midsize 4-cylinder cars have to offer - all cars that are very prevalent on the roads. We think that you may have misunderstood our comment where we said that you can use "80% of the power, 90% of the time." That is strictly for acting like a hooligan and having fun with the car. In a typical driving scenario, you would not need all of that. We would be very disappointed if you came away with the wrong message from this video. The Scion FR-S is truly an enjoyable car to drive and if you are seriously in the market for an affordable lightweight sports car, this is one you should consider. Or the new MX-5 if convertibles are your thing. The best part about the automotive industry today, though, is if more power is important to you, there are other options available. Hopefully that clears things up a bit for you. Thanks for watching!

      ***** Thanks for the response :D I've really been wanting this car for a while now, and i am getting a new car soon so i was looking at this and it does seem like a great car! What is the maintenance like for them? because i want it to be able to last a while too

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  9 лет назад

      +OfficialVanDyce The nice part about this car is that there is nothing exotic under the hood, so maintenance should be fairly straightforward. We are not sure if synthetic oil is used, so worst case scenario would be oil changes every 3,500 miles if conventional oil is used. Probably the only premature wear and tear might be the tires, depending upon how aggressively you drive. The factory Michelins are nice, but might be a little soft, leaning more toward performance than long lifespan. However, you can replace them with something comparable, performance-wise, with a little better tread-life, so that they'll last a little longer. We also suggest that you check out some of the FR-S forums, too. The people on there are very knowledgeable and can offer first hand experience to you. Hope this helps!

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  9 лет назад +1

      OfficialVanDyce We can only assume that those with negative viewpoints have not had the opportunity to drive one of these. Yes, we will be the first to admit that we'd love some more power under the hood, but the car is a lot of fun the way it currently is. Plus, we tend to say that about every car we drive, with the exceptions of the SRT Viper GTS ruclips.net/video/qwcbeT9VNy0/видео.html and the Mercedes ML63 AMG ruclips.net/video/vm9b-ymOG_g/видео.html. Those have plenty of power! LOL

    @AutoAcademics. Scion frs is not a true sports man. Scion frs is not in the same class or better than wrx, s2000, 350z/370z, new mustang gt. At the end of the day scion frs is a little sports car. In the future I hope scion will add a turbo to the frs since its underpower.

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  9 лет назад +1

      Stafford Lewis, first we want to thank you for your comments and watching. While we agree that the cars you mentioned are wonderful, lots of fun to drive (and own), and are in a different class from the FR-S, out of the ones that are currently on sale today, the FR-S/BRZ and Miata are still the best examples of true affordable sports cars, which was the focus of this video. As we mentioned in the video, light weight with good handling (and 2 doors?) are key components to a sports car, not necessarily high horsepower (though we also agree that the Scion/Subie twins could benefit greatly from a turbo), and the fact that the FR-S can be purchased brand new for around $25k (base) is what makes it affordable. Not to mention, at approximately 2,800 lbs., its curb weight is significantly less than all those mentioned with the exception of the S2000 whose weight was very comparable, yet sadly is no longer available new.
      Please do not misunderstand us. We never said that the FR-S was better than the other cars mentioned and we greatly appreciate the WRX, S2000, and Z-cars. And to enlighten even further, Chris from the video has actually owned 2 Mustangs so far (please do not get him started), yet none of those cars that are currently sold today match the traditional definition of a true lightweight and affordable sports car, except again for the Miata. And if we take affordability out of it, well now we're talking Porsche Caymans, which would be a totally different topic. LOL
      Thanks again for watching!

      +AutoAcademics. Thanks for responding. Scion frs is an affordable car, but it is not a true sports car. As I was saying earlier frs is underpower and cant compete with wrx,350z/370z, s2000, and new mustang gt. Frs is a little sports car. Frs is for people who can't afford a true sports and people who getting their first sports car. If scion frs gets a turbo it will be a good true sports car.

      Adding a turbo to FRS will costs 30K+, the market Toyota wants to hit is those who are only willing to spend around 20k. Anyways, you can always spend 5k to power it up to 300hp+. I honestly just need 300 HP.

    • @StaffordLewis1
      @StaffordLewis1 9 лет назад

      +Berkeclor92. I know that. I was just saying that scion frs could be a true sports car if they add a turbo. If I was Toyota I would made a base frs for 25k and frs s with a turbo for over 30k. Right now the new wrx is pushing the scion frs out the game. It will cost over 10 grand to turbo the frs. 6000 grand for the turbo, 1500 to 2000 to install and 5 to 10 grand to rebuild the engine. You got to rebuild the motor so you won't messed up the internals when you upgrade from n/a to turbo.
