  • I review this sweet Scion FR-S that's been fitted with an Innovate Supercharger and is making around 250 hp. Huge thanks to Eric and Moto for making this review possible!

    I can totally imagine how the twin screw setup feels more "natural" than the turbo versions would be, I'm sure it felt really good to be behind the wheel of any BRZ/FRS again! Great job.

      If the FRS/BRZ came out with a stock turbo it would probably be the one i would recommend for a fun car.

    I've owned 3 FRS's, drove the MT for 50,000km and the two AT's for around the same. I prefer the AT, I don't think it's lazy at all, shifts insanely fast and I get much more consistent times with it. I also find the AT much more comfortable to drive all around and I have much more fun with those paddles than I did manually shifting. I was pressured into MT by people saying "it's an enthusiast car, you need the MT! It's only a 4 banger!" so I went for the trade in and within 10,000km I was missing my AT. Honestly anybody knocking the FRS AT needs to suck a hairy nustack and get over themselves; they act like driving a MT makes them special or some shit meanwhile I know 16 year old girls who can drive MT - believe me you aren't special. The car is slow with both transmissions by the way, the AT is by far the superior track car if you choose to supercharge and make it launchable from a numbers standpoint - it's also way more relaxing to drive and it's just as tail happy for the fun times, and better gas mileage (and you won't have to replace the clutch with how hard this car is driven so better reliability) People who shit on others for personal preference need to get their heads checked.

      Thank you! I'm so tired of these idiots that bash on people for driving auto. I've driven manuals all my life and it doesn't make you special like you said. Anyone who hates on auto users have probably never driven one of the newer cars with auto and paddle shifters.

      and in your daily driving that equals.....not a fuckin thing. You would think by youtube comments that every driver of every fuckin car was a race car driver. It's a 200hp fuckin car. Even this one he has he said like 250.
      Every fanboy of these cars claim "it's not about the hp, it's about the handling". If that's the case why the fuck do you all cry about it's speed with auto?

    • @sigmaprojects
      @sigmaprojects 10 лет назад

      Mook aton Actually less power makes an auto feel slow. I mean a 2005 scion xb with a stick feels like a race car next to an auto civic >_> There's a reason why the Civic Si only comes with a stick.
      But to each his own obviously, some people just want to cruise.

      +Toyota4Life I kind of agree. The Scion badge gets a pass, but Subaru's solid and asymetical badge kind of subtracts from the car's overall look IMO. I plan on debadging my FR-S when I get one anyway (except for the actual FR-S badge).

    Hell yah, keep 'em coming boys !! Toyobaru seriously needs to see the vast amount of supercharger/turbocharger kits the aftermarket is putting out and making them work on these cars, and produce a production model of their own with some sort of forced induction for more power. I can't believe they still have no plans of making the car with more power, yet in just a few years, there are so many F/I options for this car. Toyobaru, get your act together and this will go down as the greatest cars made in a long long time. It already is halfway there, but the power and torque are a serious let-down. Thank you Matt for the video, though the supercharged part is the only good mod on this car IMHO.

      Oh come on man. What in-house competition? One can be a high powered rwd sportscar while the other can be a proper rally car with 4 doors and awd. Saying this is an in-house competition is like saying the M3 shouldn't exist because the M5 is there.

    Why didn't Toyota/Subaru simply produce a supercharged version themselves? They must have known people would want more power. The car is obviously capable of dealing with the extra power without messing up the handling.

    • @jakfolisto
      @jakfolisto 9 лет назад

      Keyboard Dancers Subaru wanted to release a more powerful engine, but Toyota didn't want the BRZ to have more performance when the twins released.

    • @roblucchetti2993
      @roblucchetti2993 9 лет назад

      Keyboard Dancers Usually because a supercharger also robs power from the engine as a result of being belt driven. Any accessory belt causes engine drag - which isn't great on 4 cylinder.

    i find rev match downshifts for auto as 100% necessary for any performance orientated car. I was furious that ford did not include this with their 2011+ Mustangs. I've unexpectedly hard engine braked on the highway so now I just leave it in D and the Bama tune is usually smart enough to get it going. I hear the new 2015s have rev match capability though.

      Slickpete83 For me? Value for money. Manual is cheaper than the automatic. Performance improvement per dollar invested is greater in a manual than automatic due to greater drivetrain loss in automatic... That's "why the fcuk not"

      I think you're right Josef and then a true enthusiast would be glad to drive a manual car instead of the auto transm, take Audi's and Vw's as example they look faster with the Stronic and DSG but it's just a computererized mod they are electronized (dunno even if it's right) it's just a virtual fun...

    I was thinking about buying a 2003 S2000. I was a little annoyed by how much the engine vibrated. It made you feel as if you were about to destroy the car. Also, my only other dream car is a lotus elise.
    I want to track the car, as more important to me is starting karting as a hobby (I know, I wish I coulda started at 5 years old haha).
    But, you can pick up an FR-S for $11,000. Safe to say $11,000 + $5,000 supercharger kit, offers a better car than an s2000?
    You'll have more power, you'll get rid of the torque dip with a good tune, the handling will be much better than s2000. In a lot of ways its the better track car.

    I drive the auto FRS, test drove them both and went with the auto just because of traffic and I thought the paddle shifts were well done. You should try shifting with the shifter in the auto though, it's really fast. Combined with sports mode and stuff the car still remains very fun to drive. Manual better? Yeah probably because you can actually launch it properly without a transmission upgrade, outside of that they are pretty equal.
    I might throw a supercharger/turbo into my car eventually. I'd say 250 to the wheels would be more perfect though for this car.

    Very nice looking car. Awesome job on this video man. I would love to have one of these. Super charge is the way like it. Again great job.

    Great car, cheap-ish, reliable, major amalgamated history between Toyota and Subaru. Look half decent to work on. Decent on insurance if you're record is clean. Gas mileage with that twin-screw wouldn't be much different if not better if you drove it with a light foot (yeah right).

    Nice review Matt, I've been keeping my eye on that supercharger for the brz I'm planning on getting in 4 yrs. Still not sure what is better for a first car, Auto or Manual?

    I have an automatic BRZ. So many haters on here.
    I love my auto BRZ and have even tracked it. I would definitely get a manual for the track but driving in SF in a manual...too scary.

    How much torque does the supercharger add ? Awesome review !!!! , I test drove an automatic frs and literally the only thing I didn't like was the lack of power , but after watching this video I might rethink buying a frs again : ) , also how is the fuel economy with the supercharger assuming u drive it normally

    ''You can never call yourself a real enthusiast when you judge. When you mix the immature and the mature, you get the car scene we have today. No matter what, every car is winning in their own ways. If you don't like a certain vehicle, keep your mouth shut. Just because you think you're better than others doesn't mean it's true. No one needs to hear your negative comments. Enjoy the scene. Don't ruin it.''

    I can see that this car is a good package outside and under the hood. The automatic doesnt seem that out of place to me, even tho I prefer manuals.

    About to get a car this weekend. Probably used, a year or 2 old. Can't decide between a 370z, FRS, Focus ST or Gen Coupe 3.8. It will be my daily driver. I know most will say 370z, but the only thing that keeps me from being 100% with it is the fact that it only has 2 seats and a small trunk. I'm worried that it will be too impractical.
