At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.

As an owner, I would like to add a few bits and pieces:
It should be mentioned that there are two versions of the V8 engine in the 650i (at least for the coupé and convertible). The 408HP version really has a lot of problems and should not be considered to be bought, these are the ones you will find online at the lower end of the price range. But there is a revised version of the N63 that has 449HP and this engine is much more reliable. Actually further iterations of it can also be found in younger models like the G30 or G11 for example.
Furthermore I think it's worth to mention that, even though the 6 Series was only sold in low numbers, it shares most of its parts with the F10 5 Series which was being sold incredibly well. So there won't be any issue with part availablility in my opinion.
Thanks for the review, I also think that this car is one of the best value for money cars out there on the used market, that's the reason I bought one haha!

Couple of glaringly bad statements in this video that need correcting.
    1. The 6 is literally the same drivetrain as a 5 series. Just a little shorter on the F12/13. The F06 Gran Coupe is the same length as a 5 series. But the body is a bit longer.
    2. The 6 was a flagship offering. These actually sold quite well. There were just fewer of them and the price was higher for obviously reasons
    3. The evolution of the 6 was NOT discontinued. They made an ugly hatchback 6 that has zero to do with the F series 6. The F series 6 went on to live in the revived 8 numbering with the G series.
The 1st gen N63 had lots of issues but by 2013 the 6 got the super improved N63TU. The BMW V8 platforms get a bad rap. If you maintain them and go get an aftermarket warrannty. Your Golden. Not to mention that in the USA your protected on the N63 and N63TU platform for 10 years or 120K miles due to the Bang vs BMW and Isley vs BMW for excessive oil consumption repairs or new engine if necessary.
    4. You can literally put a tune and downpipes on the N63TU and run 10s in these freighters. The V8 TT tuning ability is insane.
    5. You are right. The F series 6 lines and packaging is a timeless masterpiece. Especially the 4 door F06 Gran Coupe. BMW will never reach this level of excellence with a design again.

Where did they claim it wasn't the same drive-train as the 5 series?
The BMW flagship of that era has a number greater than 6.
The 8 series is not the evolution of the 6 series, its entirely new and positioned differently in the market.
This isn't the USA and aftermarket warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on. If the N63TU was super improved why do the Yanks have extra consumer protections on them?
Where did they say they couldn't run a 10 with mods?
Number 5 seems like you agree with their comment while listing their "glaringly bad statements that need correcting"...
Fair play to defend a car you obviously like, but if you are going to call them out on mistakes, at least have the stones to do it properly and with a little intellectual honesty.

It was even stated as being a flagship offering in original launch literature and touted as such in major automobile magazine reviews. The 8 is 100% the evolution of the 6 series. And was such a good seller that BMW continued it in the revived 8 name. Same market segment, same drivetrain technical and powertrain platform evolution, same models. Not sure how you came up with it not being the next gen of the 6. Weird. Him showing a hatchback 6 which is totally unrelated to the F12/13/F06 and was glaringly false to imply that was the evolution of the F12/13/F06. The other statements made, while not directly related to what was said in the video are still indirectly related to the robustness of the V8 and potential. As far as warranty. Well, sorry you dont live in the USA or live down under, or wherever.

    • @Jaredscott89
      @Jaredscott89 Год назад +1

@@registrationaccount1034 Flagship is flagship, the 6 wasn't it.
No the 8 is not an evolution of the 6.
If the 6 was such a good seller, BMW wouldn't have to totally alter the marketing and segment position of the car to revive it.
They showed when most laymen would see when they lookup a modern 6... it was a fair comment.
Your list was defective. In future if you want to attempt to call out someone for false statements, at least have a shred of intellectual honesty.

That’s honestly the only 6 worth the money (slightly worn M6) and that’s something I don’t think they touched on. Yes it’s more expensive, but you don’t buy a 6 series for the inline 6 engine to cruise around. You buy a 6 series because it’s a beautiful, powerful coupe. BMW is proficient in luxury performance cars… save a few more years and either get the M6 or the 650i. Yes the 40i is more reliable but this chassis is wasted on a 6 cylinder. 640i will bore you in a couple months. No reason to spend BMW money on a 640 when you can get the same out of something like a Lexus/Infiniti and it be cheaper. If you do just want to cruise, get the slower 5 or 7 🤷🏽‍♂️ A not so sporty 6 series is such a weird middle. Gotta go all in 😈 bet you’ll remember the m6 forever

You are right about running costs/parts. I just replaced front brake pads and discs for around £400. If budget will stretch I think a 2015 facelift car is worth having for the upgraded tech as is M sport trim, ride is still smooth and the interiors are so much better than SE (I used to own a 420i SE so speaking from experience). I have the head up display which I would recommend, I don't have heated steering wheel, reversing camera or soft close doors - and ideally I think these are all good ones to look for on a used example. The non soft close doors do tend to slam a bit! The torque on the 640d is insane, but I opted for petrol (640i) given I have a convertible and whilst it's no V8, it still sounds very good (especially in sport mode). Would highly recommend!!

Saying that I have a tune on it which bumped power to 300kw and 600nm. Plenty for city driving. I love the look still and would upgrade but there is nothing of this quality for the price and looks that makes me want to change. Also love it is rare people always comment on it. I've owned a total of 3 650i xDrives so far, as well as a 2017 M6 Coupe. I'm currently driving a 2015 650i xDrive (and a 2017 M6 Cpe). I have to say that I specifically avoided the 2012 model year because of the aforementioned engine problems. After driving a total of about 60K miles between 3 of these cars, I haven't experienced a single problem. Not one. I'm very keen on keeping them well maintained, but I'll also drive them in a spirited manner. So far, I couldn't be happier nor could they be any more durable. I'm not sure what the mechanic in this video was actually talking about, other than just avoid the 2012 model year. 2013 and later and you should be good to go.
I should also point out what a HUGE bang for the buck you get with the 650i Xdrive. The cost when new were astronomical relative to other cars. MSRP was close to $115K for my current car, but I picked it up with 18K miles for $45K. It's still like brand new with about 34K miles on it now. Just another reminder that absolutely NOTHING has gone wrong with the car whatsoever. Not even a single window switch. Nothing. That's my experience, and I couldn't recommend them enough.

I bought a 2013 used 640d Gran Coupe in Frozen Metallic Bronze back in 2018 here in the UK. I love absolutely love it. It is my only car & a daily driver which accomodates 2 kids (8 & 17).
I recently had to drive a 2021 M440i convertible as a courtesy car for 2 weeks, although the newer tech and Android auto was amazing, driving the car just felt lackluster and boring compared to my 6 series and very strangely, the M440i felt sluggish compared to the 640d!
Below are the issues i've had with my 640d, that i can remember (I do pay monthly for an extended BMW Warranty for a bit of piece of mind, however parts of the issues below were still not covered by it):
Items I've had to get repaired:
    1. Glitchy passenger window
    2. Degredation of a plastic gromit at the bottom of the engine bay (in front of the passenger side footwell) leading to flooding in the rear passenger footwell...like a mini swimming pool.
    3. I've had the oil leak issue, mentioned by the mechanic in this video, this impacted a fair few parts.
    4. Coolant flange developed a small crack (had to be fixed immediately)
    5. In the last 2 weeks i have received a letter from BMW as the car has been recalled due to the EGR
    6. Handbrake button, became loose and didnt work.
Wear & tear/ maintenace points ive noticed
    1. Beige leather cracking on the lower thigh & side bolsters of the front chairs
    2. Felt inside of the cubby holes in the front doors wearing away
    3. Tyres - on average I pay £260 per tyre. (Run flats) - I also upped the profile a little bit
    4. Not sure if this is going to become a major problem, but in the last 2months, the car is struggling to recognise my Android phone when connecting via bluetooth.
    5. Sat nav was well out of date, so many roads not on it. I recently bought an update online
    6. Front seatbelts have lost their elasticity.
    Enjoyed the video!!! 👍🏽

All of the issues you mentioned apply for sure on the very first iteration of the engine, which was arguably the worst engine BMW ever built. However the first TU (technical update) already included so many changes to adress the problems, that it was worth to change the Engine Name cause it had very few in common with its original state. TU2 and TU3, though in smaller scale, brought further improvements. It would have been nice to know if you have any experience on the TUs especially the last one.

Nothing other than standard maintenance for the age (radiator, water pump, brakes etc) required and by a long stretch more reliable than the much newer F15 X5 Xdrive50i we owned at the same time. I also rate the interior to be one of the best of any modern BMW, having only recently lost that crown to the BMW IX. Yes, the V8 is an oil-drinking monster but the facelift version had most of the reliability issues addressed. As far as general drivetrain and electronics mine was reliable and trouble free. The in-car tech was amazing for the time and can be modernised by a simple interface box that adds CarPlay and Android auto. It's a used car bargain!

Drove 45,000 miles without any issues other than a faulty wiring harness, which effected the roof operation, and had to be replaced just 7 months out of warranty, however BMW UK contributed most of the money as a goodwill gesture. It does use a little oil occasionally ( it’s intermittent ) and I keep spare oil in the trunk for long trips.

And they don't fail all at once. Also the car consumes oil which needs to be monitored. Also remember that cost of ownership is quite high. The run-flat tires are over $300 each! The positive is that this car is a head turner. People move out of the way when they see this car in their rear view mirror.

A new 8 series would be _a new 8 series,_ *not* a replacement for the 6 series. It would need it's own platform, not be based on an existing one like the 6 series.

Since 2017, I became the second owner of a 2012 BMW 640i coupe. I had all the fears of what if this or that went wrong, I even purchased at the time special mechanical insurance from the dealer for $3,500. I service the car yearly, and haven't had any major mechanical issues yet. I agree with everything in the review, regarding how these cars handle and feel to drive. I think the 640i has loads of power, and I really don't think it needs more power. In terms of looks, I reckon the 2-dr coupe looks way better than the 4-dr GT variant. My 640i coupe has 120,000km on the odometer and still the interior has not shown any of the wear that is in the car above under review. The exterior has held up and still looks new, but I do garage the car always. I've seen the 3 and 5 series interiors and they really underwhelm me when compared to the 6-series. The sound system as standard rocks in these cars. Another thing, I'd stick with the standard run flat Dunlops that comes with these cars. Roads here in Australia are appalling with deep pot holes. I lost count of the number of times I've driven into these holes and thought my rims are gone. Fortunately, I've changed rubber at 80,000, and recently at 118,000, and zero rim damage or cracking! My advise stick to the Dunlop Run flats, they handle extremely well and protect the alloys!

@@aleksandarpesic1412 This is such a myth. I couldn't disagree more. The reliability of both Lexus and Acura are not nearly as perfect as people think. There's a reason that Honda was fined a record amount just a 3-4 years ago, TWICE, by the U.S. govt in the same year. The first record fine (higher than it's ever fined any other car company even since!) was for the company NOT reporting to the U.S. govt. (as required for ALL manufacturers) all the mechanical issues that customers where reporting to dealers while still under warranty. The second record fine they were issued in the same year was for under-reporting the number of deaths experienced in their cars. You can google both of these fines up very easily. This is just one example. If you think an Acura or Lexus is built to withstand driving at extremes on the autobahn like a German car is, think again. They were designed for driving in a country that has a top speed limit of 55mph. Japan also has a tax code that makes it very, very, VERY expensive to hold on to a car for very long at all. They designed their tax code so that people will purchase new cars much more often and make it prohibitively expensive to hang on to a car for even 5 years.

They are massively underated and look better than the SL from Mercedes (I was never a fan of their styling, except for the classic ones)...
The only thing that scares me is the maintenance (especially the V8's and V10 in the E63/E64)...
    Great video👍

These ReDriven reviews are always good. This is another example. The only thing that ReDriven forgot to mention is that if you can't afford to buy a new BMW, you definitely can't afford to buy a used one. Awesome car, just the same.

@david brayshaw I disagree, I own a 2012, MSport 750Li XDrive, 2011 535i XDrive, 2007 525i, and a 91 Six Speed 850i, all bought used with the mileage as low as 31,000 and all paid for. I do all the work and maintenance on them myself so very little trips to a dealership. I have purchased others over the years new also. So stating that if someone can’t buy one new, they can’t buy one used is simply not true. If purchased used it all about the needs or want(s) of the person, and how deep their pockets are, or what they are willing to pay.
I now have my eye on the new electric 7 series, and the new Alpina B7, and yes I can buy either one new.

@@JR-pz6wx I don't disagree with anything that you say. As an enthusiast who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty and as someone who is able to source both the vehicle and the consumables at the "right" price, there's a bundle of fun to be had for not ridiculous amounts of cash.
But for the mere mortal, all too often vehicles of this nature (not just BMW) can prove to be a financial nightmare.
I had really good luck with a couple of Mercedes, the third one, not so much so, but I did at least manage to get my money back.
It's horse's for courses at the end of the day.

Not necessarily true. I couldn’t afford to buy my 650i GC back in 2017 at its brand new price of $102k. But I could definitely afford to buy mine CPO at a price of 43k. It had the CPO warranty. I’ve since added a 3rd party warranty and I’m still enjoying this car over 5 years later. I could sell this car today and it would’ve literally costed me around $13-14k (depreciation) to own it over 5+ years. Most of y’all spend way more than that leasing a Honda over 3 years!

I have 61000 miles on my 2015 650i - I’ve spent the majority of its life with bolt ons and a stage 2 tune running 93 octane - making 561whp - the ONLY issue I have had so far is the PCV breather hoses. The engine mounts did need replacing but that’s a wear + tear in my minds eye.

When you talk about repair bills on these cars it would help immensely if you gave a range of what may be likely. Ten thousand, five thousand etc. I would be quite prepared for the odd three to five thousand bill, but may not see ten as worth while.

      For six cylinder:
Oil Filter housing gaskets, pulleys and belts where AUD$290 in parts from FCP Euro
      Valve cover gasket is $230
      Vanos seals like $30.
Oill pan gasket is very hard at home but does not really need doing.
