Love all your videos Timm. Highly educational and enjoyable! I bought a 645ci last week and I am really happy to watch your content. Greetings from the Netherlands!
I found this channel via your website. I'm selling my 650i and wanted to know more about an oil leak. Thanks to you, I can see it's a vacuum pump leak. After watching this I wish I knew this before buying! That being said, the one I'm selling appears to be quite a good example - I wish I didn't need to sell it. 650i's really are beautiful cars. One day, I'll get another BMW, and I'll be sure to check out your website & channel for advice. Cheers from NZ.
Hi Timm, new to your channel and greatly impressed with this review/tech check, Always very wary of mechanical soft top roof cars, a friend of mine bought an Audi convertible and the roof went sour in the first month of ownership. The car had to be low loader delivered to repairer with the roof half up, and that is a quality car so wary, as the saying goes, OK whilst it's working! The BMW M6 I used to own had probs with water in boot with the battery half submerged, the cabin area was fine. The front axle had a section of the alloy break off and that cost a lot to replace and I was informed that it was not my fault! So beware, the M6 went and looking at 650i now but still having doubts after warnings from you guys on line as to engine probs, perhaps I will just stick to my 30 year old 325, cost hardly anything apart from servicing in the 24 years I have owned. Well done on this, great viewing and superb car.
Thanks Tim! You gave me confidence, so I just bought a 50K miles (rare) manual 2007 650i in Glacier White. As you mentioned they are more expensive in the U.S. than the U.K. but still remarkable value vs. new cost. Mine has the full leather dash, winter package, 20' wheels and upgraded stereo - lovely interior and difficult to believe it is 14 years old. The only thing that gives it away is dated iDrive, CD changer in glovebox and somewhat dated mirrors. The mid-range acceleration is intoxicating, yes - it can do 0-60 in a hurry but it almost feels indecent. It compliments my 2017 330i wagon (estate) daily driver.

I think those buyer guides are a bit mad. no car can have 50 things in perfect conditions if it's 15 years old... So this video is really good, 5 simple and important things and enjoy the car
Absolutely fantastic video. I’m thinking about a 645 and have come across a O4 manny up for sale about 1.5 hrs away. 95k on clock but MOT history mentions oil leak as an advisory for past 3 MOTs / few thousand miles. Does that sound bearable or walk away?
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Hi Tim, I found another 2007 650I. Few more miles but great service records. Drives like new with the new set of tires he put on.
I just bought a **perfect** 650i convertible, mineral silver, white-black interior, 27300km! I did all these checks and it was perfect. Got it for Y1400,000. About £10,000! I love Japan
Wish someone came up with this video before I brought mines... Unresolved misfire due to valvetronic lift wear... Took my baby to p&r bmw they adjusted the sitting position of the eccentric shafts... Great video I'm looking at an 2007 650i convertible with 140,000 miles its in pretty good shape engine sounds good, but I did see some grayish/white smoke at first stop sign he said it does it when it's cold. Also had a rough shift once during the test drive I'm going to do these checks today after work thanks!
Excellent video. Going to look at one over the weekend. I wasn't sure on what to look out for but this video gave me great insight. Thanks for a great video.
This has to be one of the very best videos to help a buyer not mistakenly purchase a bad vehicle when it comes to the major components. Thank you so very much, I will use all your tips when looking to purchase my 650i..oxoxoxoxXX
I bought mine last summer with 75k miles and all prior maintenance performed at the dealership. I have rough gear changes when the car is still warming up, then they smooth out after driving for a bit. The plan is to change the transmission fluid and filter, hoping that will do the trick to get smooth shifts no matter what!
I bought a 2008 650i with 85k Very clean, I did all the checks on it, A week later when I was driving it to work, I got a message on dash engine is hot, I tried to come off the exit then message said engine over heating seconds later the coolant reservoir exploded denting my hood. The car is currently at the shop getting checked. I hope it is not something expansive or an engine issue.
Hello Timm, watching your video I just get an impulse to go down to the garage and have a look at the timing-chain in my 650 cab, cause my last Oil-Change must be years ago... => ...is it a "bad sign", if the aluminum of the bearing-housing beside the chain is still clear (and looks silver-grey like aluminum-cast is looking when it's new) => so mine has no "golden curtain" in front? (...as seen in your video ;-) My 650 is from 2006, bought it in 2010 with 60.000km and drove it until 2013 up to about 90.000km Since then I only drove few 100km per year = about 5.000km in total (due to wife, kids, house, garden, etc :-) Watching your clip I got feelings to change my oil immediately => but looking at the attached sticker "...last Oil-Change in 2015" => I think I can rest down for one year and reach the "Decade" ;-) P.S.: nice Color of yours (it's "Barbera rot metallic", right ?) - mine is "Malachit-Grün" (would say: black-green-mineralic-flittering) with black "Pearl-Leather" E64's are like good wines - the older they get - the better they are !!!
This is great, your is fantastic watching thanks a million,am actually trying to invest in one but trying to get the right one and place this is my worries, but thank you for your video absolutely amazing.
Thinking of getting one. I’m a bit worried because in a crash over a decade ago and the Carfax doesn’t show any major upgrades to parts such as the ones you’ve mentioned…. maybe I won’t get it then.
Brilliant video. Looking into getting a 6 series so the tips you've shown will definitely come in handy. Great presenting style too so gained a subscriber!
I so wish I saw this video before purchasing mines.. bought mines in 2018 but never really got around to play with it until last year and was told it need a trainee. I had to try to jump it yesterday. No response. I’ll get a interstate battery for it but I will say there is nooo coolant in there
Good afternoon to I want to tell you that I love watching everyone of your videos . So far I purchased a 2008 650 in the United States and I am a $1000 in for the vehicle
Good morning Timm. I love this video. I will actually be looking at a 2008 650i convertible tomorrow. Midnight metallic blue with saddle brown interior. I will be playing this video as My Wife and I inspect the car. This car has 88,000 miles on it, and according to the Car Fax report it has been very well maintained, it has not however had the transmission fluid changed. If the car shifts buttery smooth, should I go ahead and have the transmission fluid and mechatronic seals replaced as a preventative measure, or wait until I notice even the slightest bit of hard shifts? Thanks a million for your great advice.
Another great, informative video, thanks Timm. Current owners can use these checks to keep an eye on their 650’s health as well - maybe catch something early and prevent a bigger repair bill. We’ve had late snow here in Colorado, so my 650 is keeping warm in the garage while I drive the Jeep through the slop. Watching your simulated road test made me miss driving her. Looking forward to the drive into work tomorrow morning!
Hi timm - really enjoying your content. quick video idea here: What types of options is it possible to get on the e62/e63 and which one should you look out for? Anyways cheers from denmark :)
Thanks Tim, I enjoy all of your videos. I have a problem with my 2008 650i convertible the top won’t close after driving with it down. Have to wait about an hour to close it.
Just bought a 2008 E64 650i, greyish/blue with black hood and very nice it is too. I must say, watching all your videos convinced me to go for the 4.8l instead of the 3.0l and very glad I did. One thing that I must address is the very long accelerator pedal, it seems like you put your foot about 20% down and not much happens, then vroooom..! I was thinking of getting a gearbox and engine remap from DMS to give it some extra response, thoughts ?
The throttle control is adaptive, once you start giving it some welly it will get a lot more responsive! The car needs to drive like a luxury car sometimes, hence the long pedal until you start pushing it.
Hi Timm, is it not possible to have other coolants in blue colour? The reason I ask is that I've seen big bottles at say Halfords that appear to have blue coolant in them. So if the previous owner has used that then is it not difficult to differentiate between the two?
Yes, obviously, which is why I'm careful to say - if it doesn't have blue coolant that's a problem - rather than blue coolant proves it is BMW coolant.....
I bought a e39 with a blown head gasket without knowing because I didn't check the oil cap before purchase. A two second look at the cap would have noticed a chocolate milkshake like substance.
Thanks for the reply about the throttle pedal, I gave it a bit of welly on the way home this evening, first time I have gone full pedal to the floor and I was very pleasantly surprised, wasn't expecting it to be that fast, it was properly quick! Makes a nice noise too once it's high up the rev range - on a separate note my glovebox doesn't open, the button depresses but there is no click or anything, is there some type of lock on it. There is no key as you know on the button, so wondering what's happened?
I'm looking at a low milage 2006 650i right now. It passes all your tests. Should I put a oil leak/seal conditioner additve in as a preventative measure?
Thanks Timm for the straightforward guide...just wondered a coupel of things - first about how important it is to start the car from cold both for smoke and checking inside the oil cap and second about checking electrics, beyond seeing things work are there any other electrical gremlins. thnaks for all the info, gives me some reassurance about goin gout looking for one...
It is important to do the things in the order I presented - you need the engine cold to check the oil cap and coolant - and then check for smoke on start-up.
Hello Tim I am glad I found your YT channel as I need help about my next car. I was very interested about the bmw 630i, but I do not understand the differences between this model and the 635/645/650. Can you tell me if the 630 would be in some way 'cheaper' than the other models, and which one you prefer?! Regards, Davide
Hello Davide, it's all about weight and performance - if you want the same performance as a 650i then you would use the same amount of fuel in any car weighing about the same. Of course, you don't get the same performance in a 630i - but that's the point, if you want performance get a 650i - and then you have the option of saving fuel by driving slower - you don't get both options with the 630i!
Great video Timm, I changed the gearbox in mine 90k miles , much smoother change. Always change 'sealed for life' BMW gearbox oil at around 80k, had a 535 and X5 boxes go at 100k. Need to check all those points on my car now!
I'm looking at 650i this weekend with my friend, done a fair few miles at 135k, but has had the valve stem seals done to it. What sort of temperature should the oil be at when driving? I've seen mixed results online.

Blast! Sorry to hear that!
Perfect timing for this video! I just bought a s62 650I :)
Hope you enjoy it!
If only I knew all that info back in 2014. Great tips.
Glad it was helpful Martin!
I drove one of these before buying a 3 series. The 6 series made me feel like an old guy with gray hair as soon as we got in. Then I remembered.. I am an old guy with gray hair.
Same here!
My last name is Timms too!! I was born in London, but moved to the states when I was quite young but I still have some family there.
My last name isn't Timms though!
I think those buyer guides are a bit mad. no car can have 50 things in perfect conditions if it's 15 years old... So this video is really good, 5 simple and important things and enjoy the car
Thanks, that's very kind of you!
They all leak like seives, so don't let that put you off!
very informative video sir!
So nice of you
Great information, I am going to look at a 2007 650i with 95k on it. It's a 2-hour drive however if I see these issues I will definitely walk.
Let us know how you get on!
Thanks, for the reply. I will be going this coming Thursday.@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
Good find Danny!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation I'll upload a video when I go pick it up this coming Saturday
Wish someone came up with this video before I brought mines... Unresolved misfire due to valvetronic lift wear... Took my baby to p&r bmw they adjusted the sitting position of the eccentric shafts... Starts nice in warm weather cold u have to keep foot gently on accelerator till car warms before driving... Once warm it's good... I fell in love with the wheels n just brought it... But I look after it well tho n have learnt a lot in my ownership
Well, at least you are still driving it!
Hope it went well....
Did you purchase the car
Greetings from New Zealand. Thanks for your wonderful video. I learnt more in this video then I thought possible. Hence I subscribed :)
Thanks Howard, greetings from England!
Great information thanks for sharing
Excellent video. Going to look at one over the weekend. I wasn't sure on what to look out for but this video gave me great insight. Thanks for a great video.
Glad it was helpful Sherry!
Another fantastic video for the N62! Thank you for these!
Glad you like them!
This has to be one of the very best videos to help a buyer not mistakenly purchase a bad vehicle when it comes to the major components. Thank you so very much, I will use all your tips when looking to purchase my 650i..oxoxoxoxXX
That's very kind of you Holly!
You've been given a warning of failure - do something about it: ruclips.net/video/YIAzc3qgoF4/видео.html
Hopefully not, if it was overheating then either the water pump failed or the fan did - both reasonably cheap.
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation I noticed the heater wasn't blowing as hot when I tried it. Is the heater connected to the water pump? Thank you.
@@joes3534 That indicates that the coolant was not circulating properly - so, water pump or shortage of coolant
Hello Timm,
watching your video I just get an impulse to go down to the garage and have a look at the timing-chain in my 650 cab, cause my last Oil-Change must be years ago...
=> ...is it a "bad sign", if the aluminum of the bearing-housing beside the chain is still clear (and looks silver-grey like aluminum-cast is looking when it's new) => so mine has no "golden curtain" in front? (...as seen in your video ;-)
My 650 is from 2006, bought it in 2010 with 60.000km and drove it until 2013 up to about 90.000km
Since then I only drove few 100km per year = about 5.000km in total (due to wife, kids, house, garden, etc :-)
Watching your clip I got feelings to change my oil immediately => but looking at the attached sticker "...last Oil-Change in 2015" => I think I can rest down for one year and reach the "Decade" ;-)
P.S.: nice Color of yours (it's "Barbera rot metallic", right ?) - mine is "Malachit-Grün" (would say: black-green-mineralic-flittering) with black "Pearl-Leather"
E64's are like good wines - the older they get - the better they are !!!
Thanks! If they last to this age they usually just keep going - but change that oil!
This is great, your is fantastic watching thanks a million,am actually trying to invest in one but trying to get the right one and place this is my worries, but thank you for your video absolutely amazing.
Thanks Tonero!
Ur the goat dude I’m 18 with a 07 650i taking in all your tips 💪🏻

Currently on the market in South Africa looking for the 2005 650ci. Very helpful video. Thanx!
My pleasure!
I’m considering buying a 2014 650i. Just wondering if there is anything else under the hood I should be looking at with the N63 engine.
I'm only on my first month with the F12, but will post with any problems
Thinking of getting one. I’m a bit worried because in a crash over a decade ago and the Carfax doesn’t show any major upgrades to parts such as the ones you’ve mentioned…. maybe I won’t get it then.
Thanks,great video!!!

Looking at a 645ci today thanks for the info.

About to buy a 2006 650i with 125,000 Miles for 4500$
Wish me luck 🤞🏽
Hope it went well!
Update?
I so wish I saw this video before purchasing mines.. bought mines in 2018 but never really got around to play with it until last year and was told it need a trainee. I had to try to jump it yesterday. No response. I’ll get a interstate battery for it but I will say there is nooo coolant in there
Good afternoon to I want to tell you that I love watching everyone of your videos . So far I purchased a 2008 650 in the United States and I am a $1000 in for the vehicle
Great to hear, and thank you!
Yes David, always a good plan to get the transmission fluid, filter and Mechatronics seals changed!
looking to buy one in the us soon. thanks for the vid!
Hope you enjoy it!
Excellent information. 👍
Glad it was helpful Roy!
I had an E60 that had the same issue with water ingress through the brake booster clearly an issue from that era.
Yes, I have just found that the booster area was blocked again this week!
Thanks DJ! And good to hear from you!
I always thought these were rare and that’s why I didn’t see many on the road, after I saw this I know why they’re “rare” lol
Getting rarer by the day!
Ok this was awesome
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi timm - really enjoying your content. quick video idea here: What types of options is it possible to get on the e62/e63 and which one should you look out for?
Anyways cheers from denmark :)
Thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks Tim, I enjoy all of your videos. I have a problem with my 2008 650i convertible the top won’t close after driving with it down. Have to wait about an hour to close it.
Check your outside temperature reading - they can misread and then disable the soft-top
That is a lovely car Timm! Great video thanks. 👍😀
Thanks Kev, and great to hear from you!
Unbelieveable how cheap they are in the uk
By the way im back on your channel
Just bought s 630i again
The 630i is certainly the reliable one from the range!
Great video Timm. Your the man.
Thanks Naeem!
The 630i is the best because the engine is less complicated
Great point!
Superb channel
Thank you Owen!
Hopefully by now you will have found the lock in the rear of the centre console underneath the lift-up cover!
I'm looking at a low milage 2006 650i right now. It passes all your tests. Should I put a oil leak/seal conditioner additve in as a preventative measure?
Yes Stephen, use the Wynns leak stop as a bit of insurance,
Thanks Timm for the straightforward guide...just wondered a coupel of things - first about how important it is to start the car from cold both for smoke and checking inside the oil cap and second about checking electrics, beyond seeing things work are there any other electrical gremlins. thnaks for all the info, gives me some reassurance about goin gout looking for one...
It is important to do the things in the order I presented - you need the engine cold to check the oil cap and coolant - and then check for smoke on start-up.
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation thanks for confirming
Thanks for the brilliant video
My pleasure!
Regards,
Davide
Hello Davide, it's all about weight and performance - if you want the same performance as a 650i then you would use the same amount of fuel in any car weighing about the same. Of course, you don't get the same performance in a 630i - but that's the point, if you want performance get a 650i - and then you have the option of saving fuel by driving slower - you don't get both options with the 630i!
I'm so jealous you having this as this is my dream car that i can't afford in 2022 lol
There's still a few cheap ones around Nero!
How do you unclog the water drain , my carpet gets wet in the driver floor
Here you go: ruclips.net/video/IYsbTyjR0N0/видео.html
Nice 840Ci too!!!

I have found water in my boot! Where is it coming in? What do I fix to avoid damage??
This should help yu: ruclips.net/video/IYsbTyjR0N0/видео.html
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation thanks very much Tim. Thats my job for the weekend now 👨🔧
Great video Timm, I changed the gearbox in mine 90k miles , much smoother change.
It doesn't move that quickly that's for sure - the gauge should only go past the middle after some spirited driving!
