  • Winter weather has returned! So we change gears and turn to an elevator build for access into our root cellar. We are building a homemade elevator from scrap metal. This elevator will go from our pantry in the house down into the root cellar directly beneath.

The elevator idea is a good one. I figured you were going to put something like attic fold-down stairs somehow... but THIS is better. I'm thinking, though, that you'll want 2 people to load and unload your root-cellar pantry... someone up top and someone below to send the boxes/crates/whatever back and forth. It could get a little tight to bring stuff with you on the elevator... unless you are just going for a jar or two, you know? Thanks for sharing this with us - I love to see people turn their visions into reality.

I love your channel. When building the other building with the stone bottom, and super creative wood uppers what a beauty.
I have some information about your elevator. I have installed several of those in my house for example up into the attic, one in the garage etc.
You are doing something wrong. Think physics. The leverage principle. You should put a few foot high back wall to your elevator platform, and add a side bracing cross piece in metal that goes from the outer surface of the platform up to the top of the back wall you just added on. Yes there should be rollers at the top of the back wall also.
The way it is now... let me give you an example. If someone was holding onto the edge of a broom handle with a single hand all the way at the top, and someone took the brush area and pushed on it, how much could you stop it. Now if you had a second arm going halfway up the broom you would have a much more secure and strong design. If the rollers, and they do make several different models with different weight capacities, but lets say you have a roller that is rated at 300 pounds. If you are standing out at the outer edge of your platform, that would be exerting 1200 pounds instead on the rollers. Don't hold me to those exact numbers but the principle is the same. Plus, it also would create a handle in a more elevated position so when you are riding you have something to hold onto, rather than doing a balancing act.
The other thing is the motor should be at the top as in at somewhere above the top of the wall, and not in the base of the platform.
You know safety is first. Please consider what I am saying.

Good explanation. We are kind of winging it as we go, and adjustments will be made sooner or later as the project progresses. And they may be similar to what you are suggesting. Appreciate it! Thanks 🙂

30 inches seems a bit small for one person holding a box. I think if you simulated the walls while looking at this you might have gone at least 36. In any event, building your own elevator is next level! Good idea.

I was thinking you'd weld the long track to the side of the shorter pieces instead of on top of them so it would be easier to remove/adjust. I suppose you can just drill access holes if you ever need to unbolt things. I really like the way you guys build - well thought out and good execution. You're learning as you go but you have good common sense and a good foundation of competency. You end up with solid results instead of the hack job that a lot of other channels have. I like it!

Those rollers should be spaced further apart. The sheer amount of leverage from 200-250lbs on the left platform multiplied over that tiny roller area is scary too much.

Just early in the vid, the elevator is a great idea. I do like the recycle, reuse and repurpose behind this build, my favorite 3Rs. That is how I built my first home years ago, scrounging, bartering as I went but there are some things that I couldn’t get around. That bend in the edge of the angle iron could be sorted by some relief cuts and reveled but not all at once. I’m not a welder by trade but just muck around with making stuff when needed, much like you are doing on this project. Enjoying your channel.
On the wall mount for the track, just a question; wouldn’t it have been easier welding angle tabs on the side of the unistrut or alternatively cutting notches out of your sectioned pieces to allow side access to the locking nuts?

I know you have solved the bolt clearance problem but I was wondering if using angled steel mounted on the existing bolts and welded to your roller tracks would not have been better. It would mean you would have to change the position of the runner mounts on the platform but it allows you easy access to the mounting bolts at all times.

@@aboulderlifeoffgrid My memory of what my comments were is a bit vague but I will do my best here to repeat.
I was wondering if an additional two vertical tracks that contain the roller assemblies similar to the ones at the wall could be attached floor to ceiling thus providing additional support for the elevator platform while at the same time taking some of the stress away from the vertical tracks at the wall.
I also mentioned adding grease to the channels to help the rollers in their up and down motion.
I seem to remember there was a third comment but do not recall what that was.

    • @aboulderlifeoffgrid
      @aboulderlifeoffgrid  5 месяцев назад

@Codger2015 I love this idea. Others have mentioned this as well, and I am heavily leaning towards this extra support as you described. Definitely will grease it, too.
I think youtube has some bugs, or they're doing it on purpose. Not sure. But not only have comments been randomly removed, but people get randomly unsubscribed from the channel. It's a little annoying. Anyway, thanks for the ideas. 🙂

There's a RUclipsr who found an abandoned bomb shelter and built an elevator like you. I think your design is very good, but the close proximity of the two sets of wheels may well bind when there's weight on the platform. I hope I am wrong, but it may be worth making a taller platform at the back...again I don't know if this elevator is going to be in the middle of a kitchen, but if the weight is off balance, it may create too much friction. Already when you left the unit alone for a second at hight, there was enough friction to stop it. Now imagine 250 pounds. I think you are in the right direction, just some small adjustments. Also if the motor is at the bottom and there is a bit of flooding your motor will die. Consider setting it at the top with your already thought-out pullies. Also no hot wires on the floor. Again, 99% perfect, I suspect you are already aware of the effect of friction on these rollers. Good luck and godspeed
