  • It's been more than a year in the making but the guest cabin is finally ready for guests. But there's more! This tiny little off grid cabin is built over our root cellar. Because our main cabin is so small we don't have room for family or friends to stay with us. Now we do! It also gives some stability to the temperature in the root cellar. Join us as we show you highlights of the construction process as we finished the inside. If you missed the first part of the build here is the link to the video.

    I am also doing the offgrid solar cabin in Michigan-it takes soo much more time and effort than you thought when you started. Like you, it was definitely a time and money as I could afford things problem-I’m not wealthy and work a fair bit.
    That said, Things are getting to a point where we bring very little with us when we come to visit and now that there is a well, we could stay almost indefinitely-which is my retirement plan. The bigggest surprise was how well my initial (small) solar setup meets our needs-a lot of that is down to the quality of the solar charge controllers….. They are 99% efficient and just plain work-and they are made here in Michigan by a company called Diysolarforu.
    I’m really happy for you two in your accomplishment! Having an offgrid cabin and root cellar (I’ll never do a masonry project again) is an amazing feeling.

    • @ADifferentKindofQuiet
      @ADifferentKindofQuiet  Месяц назад

      Thanks for commenting. That’s what the heart of it is, you have to figure it out for yourselves and determine what you need vs what you want. For us the absolute need was for a quality power source and reliable water, we both still work and did not want to be fighting with those all the time. Everything else is start small and learn and grow as you figure out your needs and have the money. It sounds like you’re well on your way, congratulations!

    • @nunyabidness9257
      @nunyabidness9257 Месяц назад

      @@ADifferentKindofQuiet It’s funny you mention water…. My experience has been that water and everything to do with it are the largest expense in your cabin, both in getting in in the first place (cost of well, cost of solar) but also in terms of the where your solar use goes. I DIY’d my solar setup so I saved a lot there, but the largest loads in the cabin involve getting water out of the ground and heating it for food, cleaning, and showers.
      It’s all relative though, it doesn’t take a huge solar setup to run a cabin-my 1000 watt array and relatively small 900AH battery have been working so well it has taken some of the pressure to install the rest of the system until it’s more convenient….. and that’s with a 160 foot well.

    The cellar is impressive. A solar powered air exchange could help as well. Well done.
