I sometimes feel like an amateur doing shoots without a flash, but I feel encouraged again watching Julia capturing these stunning photos in natural lighting.
If anything you could say natural light is a little trickier to work with as you don't really have control over it 🤓 but in all seriousness I have always believed that you don't need to "look" super flashy to take professional photos, there are times when flash is needed and there are times when it's not - it's all just about what style you are aiming to achieve!
Personally, I prefer to learn how to control natural lighting to my advantage over using a flash, less equipment to carry, I guess. And I also like the natural look better. Thanks for the advice, I've learned a lot from your videos!
I am not even a photographer and I am here for each and every video of yours for almost a year now. Love the way you guys capture the photoshoots and the examples you provide 🙂
Been looking for a review with EF glass on the EOS R body for AGES! As someone with a fair number of EF lenses... it really helps to know how they focus with the adaptor ring!
Yes we wanna see everything!! Running an Eos R. makes grabbing focus so easy, i don't even have to think about it... I think Canon is soon to show us what they can really do with a mirrorless camera.
I use the EOS R with old L-series lenses all the time, and I'm also very impressed by the speed and accuracy of the autofocus! That EF-RF adapter is just amazing. That's odd about your 50mm. I have the same lens and mine looks sharper wide open. Maybe it needs a CLA?
Yeah I was happy to see that they worked like native glass even though they were adapted!! And yep, I feel like my 50 should be sharper wide open, I'm going to see if I can calibrate it
Hey! I just got an used but EXTREMELY NEW EF 85mm f1.8 for my RP.... I’ve also have a EF 24-70 f2.8 II and a EF 70-200 f2.8 IS II.... My 85 is SOOO soft, maybe is because of that? I was planning on selling it....
I use the R with Zeiss Milvus lenses. The R is exceptional with manual lenses because of focus assist and peaking. You might want to try the Milvus 85, it’s a hidden gem with a unique smooth bokeh:-)
Great video! I love see you perform these shoots and the easy way you interact with your models... can you comment more on what autofocus methods you were using? Eye AF always?
Thank you so much! Yep I had eye EF on the entire time and only switched between servo and one shot throughout the afternoon, both had accurate focus :D
Julia Trotti thanks for your reply!, incidentally, I have started to use liveview shooting on my 5D IV , particularly for children portraits, and I find autofocus accuracy is quite impressive, although I am not comfortable with the way servo works under liveview...you need to keep pressing the back button focus (since that’s what I have it set up to do)... I wonder if the EOS R works the same way or if it will track the subject regardless of keeping any focus button pressed... that would be nice,
I dont know anyone that uses the view finder all my friends use live view its a lot faster and quicker and ur in tune with the environment around you let alone when ur doing people shoot you can talk to them without your face being in the camera
The sharpness is one of the first things I noticed when I started using the EOS R. It picks things up on people's faces that I don't even know when I'm standing there looking at them.
Yeah same here! First mirrorless I used was the Sony A7III where I noticed the same thing about it picking up details you can't even really notice in real life, then the EOS R does the same thing. Can be a good thing but also a negative when it comes to portrait photography, it's an interesting line of deciding when it's all too much sharpness/detail haha
Hi Julia, thank you yet again for another amazing video. If possible, please try using the Canon EF 85 mm 1.4 IS lens. It is such a beast of a lens and super fast compared to EF 85 mm 1.2!!
I just picked up the EOS R - in part due to your video & use it with the 35mm mk2. I love it, and would appreciate a ‘behind the scenes’ video in more light. Thanks for the recommendation!
So based on this video it seems as if you prefer the results of the EOS R over the 5dmkiv. I’m curious what you think of the R vs the A7iii? I’m looking to upgrade to full frame and having a tough time deciding between the two. When it comes down to results, which do you think you’d prefer?
Thanks for sharing your experience with the adapted lenses Julia! Would you consider doing a comparison using the RF 50 and RF 85 and their respective EF counterparts?
Just a guess, but the EOS R may be sharper with the 50mm 1.3 wide open because you don't have to focus and recompose. At that depth of field, that shift to compose could make a big difference.
Great shoot---beautiful model---really professional with a lot of great looks. I own the EOS R, but only shoot video---so far not a single photo taken, and no plans to do so. I just wanted to say for anyone looking for a hybrid camera with great DPAF, good 4k and fantastic 1080p this is at the top of my list. Hmmmm, looks like summer time down there. You're doing great work, Julia. Not a photo guy, but I always check out your videos and end up inspired by them. Thanks.
Great video, because that is a camera i have been curious of, when I have to buy a New camera it might be that one. Shooting with the original 6D at the moment. So Thanks for showing what it can Do with the classic L-lenses for portrait, it was a perfect Idea. Good to see I could probably keep the lenses I already have. 👏👏
I love the camera! I did hire this one as I already have all the bodies I need for my work, I'm keen for the 2x card slot that's coming out in the next R though... :D
ummm... the 50mm 1.2 IS soft wide open - that's it's charm :) I'd likely NOT sell it if purchasing and RF50 1.2. Excellent video. BTS w/ the 35 please?
Thanks, Julia! Love your videos! I'm considering the EOS R this Spring. You are motivating me to get it! Now even to possibly enhance all my L glass (as well as picking up those RF lenses!) Great shoot :)!
Thank you so much! I forgot to mention in this video but I hired this body to try it out again. I'm excited for the mk2 release hopefully it will have 2x card slots and IBIS and I will consider getting one 😊
@@juliatrotti If you shoot weddings, you're gambling a bit with one card slot...that said in 15 years of shooting I've never had an issue. Same with IBIS. Neither are necessary, but both make your life easier. :)
Great video as always. "R" you going to try the RP with those primes? Seems like it's a cheaper option for people wanting to get into the full frame game.
From what I've seen and tried so far, RF lenses are ridiculously sharp! I would love to try the 85 especially. For me it's not so much about getting as sharp as possible photos, because with portrait photography that can be a downfall in that some people don't want to see that much texture and detail on their face (such as weddings, etc) and can lead to more retouching.. more so wanted to see if they performed the same or better than they do on my 5D4 :)
definitely want to see 28-70 behind the scenes to see . I always wonder if worth purchase one while I have 35 ,50 mm lens .hope you can give some sugestion in the video . see ya ps. good video Dan keep going

Thank you so much and yesss I would love to do that! From what I've seen and tried of the RF lenses so far, they are super high quality and ridiculously sharp!
I have the EF tamron sp 35 1.4 and the RF 50 and RF 85. I love the RF system!! I can't wait for Canon to release an RF 35 and a new body with IBIS. Canon is changing the game in 2020!
Yess they are releasing some killer lenses, I'm looking forward to the EOS R II as well 😄 I only hired this body to try it out, but would love 2x card slots and IBIS in the next one so I can consider it!
I've been using Canon for a lot longer than Sony so it definitely feels more second nature using Canon again, but I do enjoy using both mirrorless bodies anyway! And I'm still using the 5D4 for my client work at the moment, need one more lens to finish up my Sony family so I can use that instead :)
Hello and thank you for this video. Finally, which lens do you prefer for Portraits: 35mm or 50mm or 85mm ? Thank you in advance for your response. Sincerely, Philgood
Hi Julia, as you point out you had more out-of-focus shots in blue hour due to the lower light level. And that’s where the lack of IBIS relative to its rivals if probably the last area Canon needs to improve on to have a world-beater.
I think the problem with the 50mm wide open is that the plane of focus is so crazy thin it's hard to get enough of the face in focus at once; on the lefthand photo of the blonde model at 4:10, it looks like the focus lands around her left eye and lips, and her right eye falls out of the focal plane. Anyway, love your videos!
which is better CANON EOS R or SONY A6600. secondly is the kit lens of EOS R good. I have ZV-E10 with the kit lens, but i didnt find the pics that interesting.
Yettttt another great video! 🔥 Last week, I was going to ask if you’d consider doing another EOS R video (maybe trying the RF 85mm / golden hour backlit vibe) so this is v satisfying 😄
Thank you so much for this Video 💖 Which Camera would you choose between Sony A7 iii and Canon EOS R? Could you make a Comparison Video between Sony and Canon EOS R? That would be so great 🙏🏻💖😇 Thank you so much for all of your great Videos and Content 😍
Hi Julia, thanks for make this video, please can you show us how the eos r handles a situation with multiple faces in the frame?, How many faces can recognise at the same time, is it possible tell to the camara to focus in one specific face and ignore the other?, How is when it locks on the farthest eye? Can you tell it to switch to the other eye? We would love to see those things, no one has done a video showing that with the eos r
You are saying that 35mm performs about same on both R and 5D4, and other two lenses perform better on R. May be that is just aperture - 5D4 is reliable down to f1.4, and R can shoot easily beyond that (1.2).
I see that you choose the LCD screen for composition - Do you get all the same focus points looking through the viewfinder ? I'm thinking of adding a eos-r to my mk iv - thanks
Yeah, for some reason I just cannot get used to any EVF lol but at least I like using the screen so it's not so bad :) And yes you would have the same focus points/same use of eye AF in the viewfinder!
Great video as always No IBIS on the R The canon 85 is nice Yes the 50 is soft I feel that wider lenses are faster in af These canon lenses should work well. Not cheap
It seems from looking at the sample images that you have a front focus issue with both 50mm and 85mm on your 5DmkIV. It's drives me nuts on my 5DmkIV. Have you tried calibrating auto-focus for these lenses?
I agree - the 85 I'm not sure still if it's just the way the lens is as I do get lots of sharp images from it, but the 50 I definitely think is a lens issue. I'm going to calibrate both this week to see if it fixes anything :)
I’m thinking about buying EF 135mm f/2 lens for my EOS R. I hope the results will be the same us here. Kind of worried about not having IS for that kind of focal length.
I'm pretty confident that the 135 will work the same as these primes, looks like they all work the same on the R as they do on the DSLRs :) If I borrow the R again for something, I'll test out the 135!
i have a question if u r free plz guide me.can u tell which one buy. i m wedding shooter. canon rf 85 f2 macro or canon 85 1.4 L is plz tell me as soon as possible.i have canon eos r. now plz guide me which one better for professionally weddings Photography???
Another good video but you mention some shots being out of focus again. Why do you not use a vertical battery grip? Thats the first thing I get for my cameras, its a must have. Any little movement shooting wide open at a razor thin f/1.2 is bound to create some camera shake and cause blur. Shooting with a grip that has a vertical shutter allows you to keep your elbow tucked in close to your body which leads to getting steadier shots, rather than having your elbow opened up and away from your body to reach the shutter. That is probably causing most of your focus issues and its why most portrait shooters who dont use grips have their cameras on a tripod to steady it. Get a vertical grip! :)
I shoot landscape most of the time anyway and have never really liked the feeling of having a battery grip on any of my cameras! The out of focus comes from shooting at a shallow depth of field, so for example if I keep my hands steady or put my camera on a tripod, etc, if the model slightly moves her chin up or shifts where she is a tiny bit while I'm taking the picture it will cause it to be out of focus on the eyes.
I would definitely appreciate more EOS R based video Julia🙏🏼
I have a couple of other EOS R videos planned 😄
@@juliatrotti do u think is a profesional camera? I am thinking to buy eos r or 6d mark ii what do u think

Lovely
I’m thinking about buying EF 135mm f/2 lens for my EOS R. I hope the results will be the same us here. Kind of worried about not having IS for that kind of focal length.
I'm pretty confident that the 135 will work the same as these primes, looks like they all work the same on the R as they do on the DSLRs :) If I borrow the R again for something, I'll test out the 135!
Julia Trotti Thank you Julia.
The EOS R is such an impressive camera. I didn’t see it coming. Great job Canon.

Love the 4k! Are you guys rendering into a h.264 or h.265 export?
Thank you I love it too! I feel like you can actually see my photos they way I see them while editing with all the details. I export 264 :)
