The story behind these books is really sweet. The author's (Rick Riordan)'s son had ADHD and dyslexia and loved Greek mythology. Rick used to tell him Greek myths as bedtime stories but eventually he ran out. So he created Percy as someone his son (Haley) could relate to. A hero who was like him that he could look up to. Haley loved his dad's story so much, and begged him to publish it. He even wrote a short story set in the Percy Jackson world later in life. This is a story from a dad to his son about how much he believed in him. I love it.

the hilarious thing is that Percy and Annabeth are supposed to be *_TWELVE_* in this
Grover is in his early 30s, but Satyrs age half as fast as humans so here he's 15-16
in the movies they bump it up to 16, even then you have an 18 and a 24yo playing them
that and they mixed Clarice's (one of the daughters of Ares, who doesn't appear in this film for whatever reason) headstrong, cocky and rather blunt personality with Annabeth's, smart, bookish, and sometimes shy personality. Annabeth also has blonde (sometimes referred to as sandy) hair, and grey eyes (which are a sign of wisdom, which she inherited from her mother)

9:30 it’s rare for the big three to have children because after WW2 they aren’t allowed to have affairs with mortals. Which doesn’t really stop them that much as we later on meet two children of Zeus
11:26 Hades never shows up. One monster gets in the camp and it’s a big deal because it’s not suppose to happen

Another thing that pretty much EVERYONE hated about the movie is how they portrayed Hades and Persephone. In the books (and mythology) he’s a grump, but not evil. The only reason he tries to capture Percy is because he wants to go “Hey brothers, I got Percy, stop causing chaos!” They meet Cerberus (who many fans and mythology lovers can agree is best boi), and Persephone doesn’t even appear in the first book! The thing though is that they have possibly the healthiest relationship among the other gods, and Hades never once cheated on her (at least in actual mythology). Plus the underworld in the books is far less hellish and far more skeleton-y.💀

I mean this is what Rick Riordan(author of the books) had to say about the script for this movie:
"Having said that, here’s the bad news: The script as a whole is terrible. I don’t simply mean that it deviates from the book, though certainly it does that to point of being almost unrecognizable as the same story. Fans of the books will be angry and disappointed. They will leave the theater in droves and generate horrible word of mouth. That is an absolute given if the script goes forward as it stands now. But the bigger problem is that even if you pretend the book doesn’t exist, this script doesn’t work as a story in its own right.
The good news: It is eminently fixable. When I first read the script I’ll admit I was plunged into despair at just how bad it was. If I were intentionally trying to sabotage this project, I doubt I could have done a better job than this script. But as I began to make notes and look specifically at what was bothering me, I realized that the script could be made palatable to fans and the general movie-going audience without really changing its present scene structure, lengthening the script, or adding new sets that would increase the budget. I am choosing to take heart in your assurance that this script is not finished. That is one thing we can agree on: It needs help."

The first lesson people should learn is never lose control of your IP. It's no accident ROP wasn't developed until after Christopher's death. He had veto power over existing characters and I bet would've used it on their Galadriel & others. They only admitted they couldn't make 'egregious changes' yet that's what they did. Cowboy Bebop's writer had no rights and they ignored his notes. Yet the same producers made One Piece with the creator breathing down their necks. Look at the difference? HW egos are treacherous.

Book Percy = Scrappy kid whose creativity and improvisation saved him time and time, is extremely funny, and his greatest strength and weakness is his loyalty.
Movie Percy = A normal guy I guess. Also kinda wants his own glory and takes in his position of power.
Book Annabeth = Super smart girl who wants to prove herself because she is a blonde and is called dumb, and because she failed her best friends in her mission. She’s tough and hard to get to open up, but extremely genuine and intelligent.
Movie Annabeth = The cool swordswoman hot chick who thinks of things sometimes.
Book Grover = A sensitive kind of kid with huge goals but not the confidence to reach them. Wants to guide and protect but is not sure of himself and wants to prove himself as well. Always willing to make the sacrifice play as he sees himself as the smallest chip in the game.
Movie Grover = A super self confident jock who chases after the babes.

He was the cabin leader for the Hermes cabin, and all unclaimed kids would stay there until they were claimed, but many of the Gods would just leave their kids unclaimed until they did something cool or impressive, which led a lot of kids to be crammed into the Hermes cabin and feel alone and abandoned. This made Luke feel really angry and he wanted to get revenge or have a bargaining chip against the gods to change that.
In the movie his motive is just... Me want power

I'd like to point out, I'm pretty sure that never happened. Not in the percy jackson series, the heroes of olympus series, the kane chronicles (set in the same universe), and the first 2 books of trials of apollo.
Chiron using a wheelchair was because he's a centaur. How exactly is the Mist gonna hide him from mortal eyes? probably by making him look like a normal dude riding a horse everywhere. Which would be weird, since Percy would see him as a centaur, while the mortals would see a guy on horseback in a classroom.
As for Grover, he "limps" because he has goat legs and hooves. He has difficulty keeping his fake feet on and quite literally has differently shaped legs.
As for ADHD and Dyslexia, the movie got it right. The ADHD helps in combat, as a demigod's attention needs to be able to move quickly from one thing to the next. And the Dyslexia is because demigod brains are geared more towards Ancient Greek (or Roman).
There's not a single instance (in the books) where Riordan tried to do a disability to hidden power thing, since they weren't actual disabilities in the first place.

Okay so I’m weird. I’ve always liked the first movie. (I don’t LOVE it, but I appreciate what they tried to do there). I get the aging up, I think everything up to Medusa is sufficiently book accurate, and I think at absolute least Pierce Brosnan & Jake Abel, as well as Joe Pantoliano & Catherine Keener, played book accurate and well executed versions of their characters, and I also commend Logan Lerman and Brandon T Jackson for their portrayals despite the discrepancies from the book versions. I think the way they altered the Lotus Casino to actually be a casino because this version made them adults works. The first movie, as a stand-alone teen supernatural movie, that took creative liberties and pulled shit from the other books to make what I always felt was meant to work as the lone film adaptation if it flopped and they wanted to pull the plug.
I think that the fact that the first film did good enough to justify Sea of Monsters, and that Sea of Monsters in turn flopped hard enough to kill the plans to finish the trilogy, is proof the first movie worked, and the second was a dumpster fire. In fact I believed to so much that I was one of the people advocating/Hoping for Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Jake Abel, and Brandon T Jackson to return as Poseidon, Athena, Hermes, and the Wild God Pan respectively in the TV reboot (although at least in the case of Hermes I would argue it’s an equal and likely better alternative route to have cast fucking Lin Manuel Miranda, 10/10 if you ask me). I know some people have a hate boner for the movies or think they are automatically cultured if they say a reboot “needs to be its own thing”, but the fact stands that it would have worked, they aesthetically fit the parts and it also would give them the chance to play a role for this franchise right, and quell the argument that the weakness of the adaptations were their fault somehow, like they should have refused because the movie wasn’t book accurate or some shit. Also note by the end of episode three (which we’ll all have a chance to see today) based on the trajectory it’s going? Aside from not having glaring differences like the movies the series is averaging at about the same number of creative liberties from the books. And the series has slapped so far so that’s CLEARLY not a deal breaker.
All in all. My point is that there are things that worked about the Lightning Thief movie, and they easily could have pulled the film franchise off had they not simultaneously tried to make everything more and less book like and also just fucked up everything with sea of monsters. And also obviously the tv adaptation gets 1000x more things right and it gives me hope that Christopher Paolini’s Alagaesia books might have a chance in hell of getting a TV adaptation do-over that actually is good as well.

Rick wrote the series for his son who actually does struggle with both of those, so he could see himself as a capable hero/person despite the learning hitbacks.

What baffles me about this movie is they got Chris Colombus, who may not be the flashiest director but he knows how to work with kid actors and as we saw with the first two Harry Potter films is typically very faithful to the source material (almost to a fault). It should have been a match made in heaven.
Instead not only did they age up the characters so that they could be played by adults but they also played so loose with the source material that even the author of the books prefers to pretend the film never existed. It's like Chris completely forgot what made his Harry Potter films so succesful.

I think one of the biggest flaw in Percy’s onscreen character is that he’s very passive, as if they wanted to make him such an audience surrogate that he kinda takes a backseat sometimes; in comparison to his book counterpart. They describe movie Percy as being impulsive, but never showing that kind of behavior, unlike book Percy who makes tons of impulsive decisions as a result of being an active member of the story.

@premiumheadpats4150 there's one that uses the Illiad /Trojan War as main theme. The characters are descendents/reincarnations of the heroes. Main characters are Helen's and Paris' reincarnations. It's called Fates and Furies by Josephine Angelini (If you like romance, this might be something for you, I didn't really like the series, but it's an easy read.)
Other than that, I highly recommend Madeline Millers novels (The Song of Achilles and Circe). Plots don't take place in modern days but those retold stories of the Illiad and the Odyssey have a very modern touch. Asterix comics are also a good choice. They portray more the time of which the books were made than the actual portrayed time (50 BC). (Like in Asterix in Britain they play rugby and there's a panel showing the Beatles xD)
Hope this is somewhat helpful to you.
