I love how Dumbledore says "good luck professor" when welcoming Lupin knowing that Voldemort cursed the position and he's basically just telling him "hope you don't get killed by Harry or lose your memory"
Lol
Wait did voldemort actually curse the Position?
@@m_ouiam.0329 he cursed the position after Dumbledore denied his application when he graduated. He felt he was suspicious after he opened the chamber of secrets and killing moaning Myrtle in the process (ofcourse he could never peove it). Now anyone who aplies is limited to a year and whatever circumstances that follow are directly from his curse. The reason Harry was so eager to go live with Sirius, is because he had already emotionally bonded with Lupin, and upon finding the truth, that affection now included Sirius
I was basically saying the same thing plus dude doesn’t have any family left either
I always assumed a big part of it had to do with how shit the Dursley's treated him. Sirius would have seemed like the easier choice. A lesser evil if you will.
Basically he’s desperate for a farther figure and just latch’s into older men

Plus he just had a uniquely bad summer where he literally ran away.
To be fair, Sirius spent 12 years in prison, Lupin never got a job for being a werewolf and had a pretty rough life, and Peter lived 12 years as a rat. I'm pretty sure these all contributed to the fact they look about 15+ years older than they actually are.

Why they never just did digital editing is beyond me
@Argentinian.Grandpa.2021 And digital editing existed then, your point?
@@alysssabear way too much effort for such a little detail.
@@alysssabear The point is, it would be difficult. This movie was released in 2004~ when digital editing, though more advanced than previous years, was still not exactly the most proficient method in comparison to today's standards. Editing every single scene, considering movement, blinking, action shots, of Daniel Radcliffe in a 2 hour movie would've been quite a hassle to complete. Not to mention to make it realistic, flow in the movie naturally, and so forth. Of course, digital editing in those times could do plenty, I'm not saying it can't. But it would've consumed a lot of time in comparison to simply wearing eye contacts (if it didn't prove to be a problem.) Simply put, digital editing was less advanced than it is now. Making every scene look natural with green eyes, not considering budget already going to special effects, digital addons, so forth, would've been a small detail to add. To add to that, the first movie came in 2001, which is even earlier than this movie. That is the point.

There was a passage in one of the books, might’ve been POA, where a government official explained what usually happened to people in Azkaban: stuck with misery and guilt, they go nuts. This official said he’d gone there once on business and that Sirius was perfectly normal, even asked for the daily newspaper once. He concluded that Sirius was genuinely cold-blooded because his horrible crimes didn’t bother him. It’s also suggested that this was the paper where Sirius recognized Peter as a rat and knew he was still alive and living with the Weasleys.
Malfoy: "is it true you fainted?"
Harry:"is it true you ran out of toner?!"
Pointing out how eager Harry is to live with Sirius just made me so sad. He hates living with his aunt and uncle so much he'll jump at the chance to live with a stranger who spent the last 12 years in prison? Sad!
I thought the same thing. Besides he's also a teenager and you're so impulsive at that age...
Obviously, like where else is he gonna go :(
Sirius can teach him all kinds of life lessons; how to use your prison wallet, how to craft a shank. etc.
and after he thought sirius was trying to kill him. Harry's just like ooh an opportunity to not live with the dudleys
And no one ever stopped to question it, abuse must be pretty normal in wizard homes if no one batted an eye at all the signs he’s shown throughout the years.
This is the film where everyone had the best hairdo. Hermoine starts having beautiful hair, Ron gets some style into his hair, Malfoy lets it all lose and down, and Harry Potter hair at its best. Just loved it lol
I think this was peak Hermione hair. Goblet and Order weren't bad but it was getting way too straight for the character description later on. This was a nice balance.
Hermione's hair wasn't how it should've been imo, it only starts to get beautiful in book 4
Some serious points for that username of yours 🥴😂
And then it all goes downhill
Hermione stressed during Slughorn's potions lesson in movie 6 is what I imagine her hair is like in the book, but the second and third movie have it kinda messy and bushy
Those 4 looking super old despite their age actually makes sense. Sirius has been in prison getting tortured for ten years, Lupin has been dealing with a chronic illness that most people hate him for, Pettigrew has been living like a literal animal, and Snape has 99% given up on life. All of these things would age somebody prematurely pretty damn hard.
No. They were cast before we found out their age from the books or JK. It was too late to change things by then
Yeah but even in the book lupin is described as greying, so i think that staying older actors for the marauders isn’t too inconsistent with their descriptions in the book
I always found the casting perfect. Now hearing that Harry's parents were only in their early 20s when they died is what bothers me, because it makes them far too young. I seem to remember his parents were Aurors (which is one of the most prestigious and difficult jobs in the wizarding world, kinda like being a special agent)? So what, they finished school at 18, then went to wizard university to study to be an Auror, finished in record time, started working, and also got married and got pregnant and had a child, and then got murderered by Voldemort... all in the span of like 3 or 4 years?? They should've been at least in their mid-30s when they died!!
@@TF2CrunchyFrog Harry's parents weren't Aurors. The moment they finished Hogwarts, they joined the Order of the Phoenix. Maybe you confused them being Order members with being Aurors.
@@tomd.treaty8752 it said he was greying but it also said he looked young as well to be fair, there’s also people age 20 who are greying but it doesn’t make them age 20 years
What annoyed me the most about time turners is that J. K. Rowling completely ignored their existence for Goblet of Fire. Somewhere in between releasing Order of the Phoenix she must have realized they were way too powerful and ruin the point of any important plot event, so during the fight in the ministry of magic, there’s a line in the book noting that some furniture fell over containing “all the time turners” that existed. THAT JUST PISSES ME OFF EVEN MORE THAN IF SHE FORGOT SHE CREATED THEM.
Yeah and like it’s kinda dumb that every single time turner in the world is in the british Ministry of Magic, like… don’t any other countries need time turners except for Britian?
I'm sorry everybody, Neville knocked over time travel so we can't do that anymore
@@ThatFreakingGinger we know
it should have more downsides to make it fit, like maybe you cant resucitate someone, if you know they died and you change the past they still die, so Buckbead never died, as shown in the paradox the kids took him before the execution, but Black died so if they travel back he would die anyway
@@maca76 She came uo with downsides only after fimishing the series, for starter is the lost of time you get trying to go back to the moment you use them, another is that while the Unspeakables sciencing it up, they ended up causing thousands of people to suddenly not exists, which caused even more people to die, which caused even more trouble on the long run. I remember there being more, but the important part is that in the end it was decided that they wouldn't create more Time-Turners (which implies they only exist in Great Britain), that the ones left would be heavely regulated, and that if they were to be used it would be only for mundane things to decrease the possibility of more butterflies.
fun fact: for this movie, the directors told the younger actors to wear their uniforms like their parents weren’t around, creating a start contrast between the first two films; this also helped the integration of muggle clothing by establishing a more relaxed and casual style of uniforms at Hogwarts
That’s actually really cool, and makes a lotta sense
@@tam2237 There we’re a lot of different things that Cuarón did that elevated the quality of this movie compared to the first two.
Lol, I remember only wearing my uniform right on way day of the year. The first day, the rest of the year I was like Harry, “Does anyone know where I am right now?”
But why????
It’s also accurate. I went to a Catholic school that was super strict about uniforms and even still I don’t think a single person actually wore their uniform correctly unless they had to. My school had to introduce clip on pre-tied ties because nobody wore the tie correctly.
Prisoner of Azkaban is visually the best in the entire series, don't even fight me on this. Also all of the hairdos in this one is ICONIC.
It’s always been my favorite
Cuaron's cinematography was definitely the best thing in this movie. That scene with the boggart where the camera goes through the mirror and never actualy leave it is still mindboggling!
I don’t know. I always thought they did the last movie really well. Spot on with the book except for harry breaking the wand.
Which in my opinion is way better than putting it back with Dumbledore. Better to get rid of the overwhelming temptation of an extremely powerful magical item.
Hermione's hair wasn't how it was supposed to be at all, it's supposed to be messy until book 4
I will rewatch the series but stop at this movie because after the third movie it is just too much. Too much drama and you have to know everything from the last movie in order to understand the next one. But yeah prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite Harry Potter movie. Mostly because I see the most creatures
I remember after watching Chamber of Secrets Hagrid was taken as a prisoner to Azkaban and I thought this movie was Harry, Ron and Hermione going to Azkaban to rescue Hagrid from Azkaban
But that’s silly and doesn’t make sense because Hagrid is released from Azkaban and visibly returns to Hogwarts at the end of Chamber of Secrets lol
@@MerkhVision yeah, althought i thought the same because i did just read the title of the two books
I really like the theory that The Maurauders added an enchantment that made it impossible for anyone but themselves to see them on the map. In the book it was Lupin, not Harry, who saw Peter on the map. That explains why Fred and George never saw Peter, but not why Lupin didn't check the map as soon as he heard Sirius was in the castle. Maybe Sirius had a way to hide himself from the map AND the other Marauders? Or maybe he didn't stay in the castle after breaking into Harry's room, so he wasn't on the map when Lupin thought to look?
Sirius was hiding on the shrieking shack most of the time, I would assume, in the books Hermiones cat was the one doing most of the hunting for Peter and Sirius and the cat would meet sometimes, the map does show the creators as well. Lupin did monitor the map after he confiscated it, but since Sirius (probably being cautious since he knows Remus knows the map exists) kept his distance, that would explain why he never saw Sirius.
At least from what I remember from the books, though it has been a while
You'd think that by the third movie, Harry would figure out that any major event occurring in late August is directly connected to him
Actually this and book 6 seem to be the exceptions to that rule
it wasnt in book 2, so there was only a single movie where that was true so far.
@@lenkagamine4145 actually dobby tells harry at the end of the summer about "a plot to make terrible things happen at hogwarts" in book 2

One cool fact about the Dementors, behind the scenes the crew had a really hard time making them look convincing at first. They tried several methods of creating the look of the Dementors, until they had the idea to film a Dementor puppet under water. That method worked so well it was used throughout the series to give the Dementors the effect of the fabric floating through the air.
That's really cool

Only in the movie she appears in middle of class - but in the book they do it the right way - from Ron's point of view just before class she goes off in one direction and comes back to them from a different direction just before class starts he was the only one that notice that.
When you time traveling you got to make so no one notices it
To me, it's details like this that make the Ron/Hermione relationship make sense. He was the only one paying enough attention to her to notice these things. No one else batted an eye
@@daggern15 that and the fact it’s a visual medium-they have to find a subtle way to visually bring up the detail that one moment she isn’t there and the next she is-the line ron says is something only a friend would notice and it makes you question what he is talking about-then on a second viewing you notice she isn’t there at first realizing what the deal was.
It’s smart filmmaking and it helps with the adaptation process-something a ton of people need to remember-these are adaptations-not copies of the book because they shouldn’t be exact copies.
@@CurtyTails True. There are certain things the films did for the sake of making the experience more visually appealing. The way they portray apparition during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, for example and the same with how they show Hermione's absence. That said, even if the films shouldn't be a copy of the books, I think they shouldn't detract from the story like they sometimes do.

One of my biggest gripe about the movie for me is that the screenwriters didn't mention James and his friends were all part of a group called the 'Marauders'. The marauders map was created by all four of them. Their nicknames were supposed to represent their animagi (and werewolf) forms. Prongs was James Potter cause he’s a stag, Padfoot is Sirius Black cause he’s a dog, Moony is Remus Lupin as he’s a werewolf, and finally Peter Pettigrew is a rat, hence he is dubbed Wormtail.
RIGHT like it’s always implied and never actually said.
It's never said in the books as well. That's all just fanfiction. Look it up.
BTW, what I mean is that there is never any conformation in the book that the group was called "the Marauders". There was a group though, and the rest is true
@@applejuices Half-right. The nicknaming of each one, the fact that they were animagi, and the fact that they were the ones to prepare the map is explicitly said by Lupin. The naming of the group as "The Marauders" is not confirmed by the book, but the fact that they were nicknamed after their transformations is explicit (at least for James): it is said by Lupin in the talk he had with Harry in the end of the book.

The Prisoner of Azkaban is the best Harry Potter film. Alfonso Cuarón is such an amazing director and the cinematography was outstanding.
I like it but compared to the book it’s not a very good adaptation I think as a stand alone not compared to the book it’s a fantastic movie
It is fantastic cinematically
Ikr especially the scene when harry is flying with buckbeak over the lake
If I’m not mistaken, one of the biggest reasons the actors aged so much between chamber of secrets and prisoner of azkaban has to do with Dumbledore’s original actor passing away.
To be fair, Harry doesn't go looking for people trying to kill him. It just happens. Honestly, even as an adult, this is still one of my favorite Harry Potter movies.
"I don't go looking for trouble," said Harry nettled. "Trouble usually finds me."
In the books Harry's parents were 21 when they died but they had to age all of the Marauders and Lily up because they cast Alan Rickman as Severus Snape who is also the same age as them.
In my opinion, it was a better move. Aging up the parents generation added weight to their failure. Its easy to believe a bunch of 20 year olds lost a war to the most powerful dark wizard ever. But a bunch of experienced 40 year olds? That mustve been a crazy war..
@@michaelklock422 I get what you mean but at the same time it takes away a bit of the tragedy of it all because a middle aged person already lived a lot while a twenty one year old who only finished their version of highschool 3 or 4 years ago still has so much to live (I'm not saying middle aged people still dont have a lot to live of course they do)

Alan Rickman was an amazing actor and I love him as Snape so I forgive them for aging everyone up to match him.
BUT like you said aging them takes away from the tragedy, when we see Harry parents in the mirror of Erised they already look middle aged, it would have been so impactful and tragic to see a couple of 21 years old, so young, so tragic.
And Sirius, Remus and Snape being in their early 30s, still young but having lived through so much, it would have emphatized a lot better the horrors of war.
@@ladyorapma why did they really have to age up everyone else anyway? the others sure but lily and James? I don't think they needed to do that being that it was years ago and they didn't age like Snape and the others. also although I think they could have aged Snape alone and not the others too. we could explain that they "aged" because they all had such a rough time. Sirius being in prison, Peter living as a rat and remus being jobless and having to have to be a werewolf every month, alone without his friends and with no family.
Knowing Fred and George's character, they would probably let a murderer run loose in hogwarts😅

Wow, thats sad.

14:00: Remus casted "Immobilus" on the whopping willow. That's why it didn't move. This was explicitly shown in the time travel part.
13:46, well Lupin is a werewolf, Peter has been a rat for 12 years, Sirius has been under the influence of dementors for 12 years and Snape has been Snape for like 30years
You know if you read the books, the Peter situation would’ve make a lot sense. He was unregistered shifter
This movie felt like scenes were missing and missed so much from the book. I remember reading an article once saying that Alfonso had to be convinced to read the books by a friend.
Why did i read this in Hermione's voice
“Huh meh meh meh meh mehhhhhh” no. I’m not reading the book. The movie series should’ve explained it better.
@@carpevinum8645 Yes, the movie felt like scenes were missing because they were, important scenes and explanations about the marauders. As a book reader I had no problem understanding the movie but I remember that some of the people I went to see it with were a little lost after the movie, for example they had no idea who the marauders were and they didn't know why Harry patronus was a deer.
The thing about unregistred animagus is not really explained, and that is why no one recognized Peter but also answers another of Alex questions, how Sirius was able to move around and not be recognized, it would be weird to see a dog on Hogwarts but nobody would think it was Sirius Black.
@@ladyorapma With all of the other random animals, and a whole-ass wild forest in walking distance from the castle, it's highly likely that a random dog wouldn't even be given more notice than to notify Filch or Hagrid to catch it and put it back outside.
You're absolutely right. The story of the Prisoner of Azkaban is so incredibly complicated and it's definitely the strangest and most confusing story out of all of the books/movies. That's why it's my favorite. It's still so interesting 😅

8:57 Speaking as a biologist, what the hell are those hippos in the painting doing in the savannah during daylight? Hippos are grazing herbivores, but they spend the hot African day in the river to stay cool and avoid sunburn (as they have no fur, which is why their skin also produces a natural "sunblock lotion", a reddish creamy oily skin secretion (which also works for humans and make the skins wonderfully soft, but skincare product, if you want to brave a grumpy & dangerous hippo to scrape it off its back) and come out at night to graze on the river banks. (Oddly enough they don't graze water plants underwater, nor do they eat fishes.) They're not standing around in broad daylight munching on dry grasses.

Daniel Radcliffe admits that he struggled with alcohol due both to a physical disorder, and as a child who suddenly became famous in a global franchise. I applaud his efforts towards healing and am a fan of his work.
Hermione is likely only adding an hour or two a day by using the time turner. She’s not doubling the entire day. The fact that she’s randomly appearing in the middle of the classroom seems to indicate that she waits for the class to end, makes her way to the empty classroom and then uses the time turner. Of course, it would make way more sense for her to just use a nearby closet or restroom, but JK wanted to drop clues about Hermione manipulating time.
if I remember, by book it was around 3-4 subjects per day, which is like half a day for regular student life. and each study day it will tike a lot fo time actually. Take 3 subject * 5 * 2 hours, you have like 30 hours per week old. and consider 9 month, which is around 36 weeks (excluding holiddays). She is approximately 1.5 months older.
@@maksymisaiev1828 I agree, but she is not because she was petrified in the chamber of secrets, I don't know how long she was petrified for though
The way they do it in the movie is different than the book because they wanted to make a big visual deal about it. JK did actually have her go to a closet or bathroom or whatever.
one turn of the hourglass is one hour to the past
the "I'm gonna be on Broadway" made me giggle cause it made me think about Daniel being naked in some Broadway type show 😂
What really bothers me is that hermione could just turn back time to sleep more, it's like, infinite sleep time, she can like sleep in 2 beds at once even, doubling the sleep time.

I actually loved everyone’s hair styles hairstyles in this movie!
8:15 bruh you didn't have to call me out like this. 😂
"We have 5 more to get through"
Speaking of which...
I figure Hermione would only be about 2 months older than she normally would have been. That's assuming an 8 hour day for classes. She wouldn't need to repeat the full 24 hours. I might even be less if she didn't repeat lunch and travelled after her first set of morning classes and then a second time in the afternoon. There are 242 days between Sept 1 and June 30, including weekends and holidays (we know Hogwarts has a Christmas break). Since it's about 34.5 weeks, that means about 69 Saturdays and Sundays, that makes 173 days. Subtract another 5 days for Christmas week as the minimum amount of time they'd get off and you come to 168.
Divide by 3 since Hermione is only repeating 1/3 of a day and you get 56 days, which is just short of 2 months.
Wow
Now this is underrated, that's a lot of math
I’m pretty sure she didn’t have twice as many classes as everyone else because during this book she dropped divination and the next year she dropped muggle studies making her time table normal again soo, i guess its really a lot less..
But I’m impressed by the math wow
It's interesting that she didn't used the time turner for extra sleeping
Even less. She had more classes than the rest, but she was not having two classes at all times every time every day. I think only 2/3 classes were at the same time, so It's probably more like 1 month or so that she'd lived twice. If I recall correctly, it is stated that she, for example, had classes when the rest had a free period, and It's never said that she was at two places at once at every school hour
I didn’t appreciate this film when it originally came out. I missed the “magically, happy-go-lucky” vibe from the first 2 books. I realized we needed this transition to darker themes especially where the rest of the book series lead to. Alfonso Cuarón depiction of the third book to film was amazing rewatching as an adult. Even though some details were missed and the ending scene was a completely different 😂, still a solid film.
besides, its hard to make a 1000 years-old castle in the middle of scotland look "happy go-lucky", even with magic xD
It’s because the series needed to get serious and hardcore and reflect real life
It needed to get darker and serious not just because the books were leading there but also because the audience was growing older as well which is why potterheads remained potterheads well into their 30s
Personally, I grew up watching Disney movies and others of that ilk, so even the first _Harry Potter_ movie was something I watched to feel more grown-up.
...yeah, I was a sheltered kid. :/
To me, this is where the movies started to depart from the books. IMO, having read the books, the dementors don’t look right (and we shouldn’t see under their hood, which we do), the Fat Lady changed, the grounds were different, the spells made weird noises…I understand the darker tone, but I was really disappointed otherwise. As far as I’m concerned the Columbus movies are more true to the source material
The original seven Harry Potter novels were always best when they focussed on the adult characters (both in the present time and the adult characters' school days), the previous two generations: Harry's parents and Snape, and the generation of Voldemort before them.
10:44 : Btw, Voldermort killed Harry's parents, Sirius basically did come recon.

Ugh yes 😭
IMO, it's really not that weird of a story. Despite her many flaws, JKR is really good at crafting mysteries, and every plot twist is expertly foreshadowed. For instance, Lupin being a werewolf... during the Bogart lessons they find out he fears the moon most of all, he's always missing around the full moon, Snape makes a potion for him every month around the same time, and also drops clues to the class about Lupin being a werewolf. That's just one example, but it really doesn't come out of nowhere. And JKR had huge spreadsheets planning out all the clues and when they'd be woven into the story for the whole series. To me, it makes a ton of sense.
Also, it probably wasn't a coincidence that Snape would have them study werewolves, when Lupin was absent and Snape was substituting the class.
_Despite her many flaws_
😉
But time thing was kinda dumb... :/ She had to cut it out in next books.
@@eevve9894 Haha true
@@xyforever1546 I imagine they probably wouldn’t go back because killing Sirius before he escaped may have had unforeseen consequences. Dumbledor probably guessed Harry was the one who saved them and probably thought the prophecy already foretold this would be an okay thing to use the time turner for.

It was definitely different, but I did like the horror cuts to black and music. It really kept me on edge when I watched it for the first several times.
You killed me when you pointed out that his eyes are similar to Sirius'. Good one
Prisoner of Azkaban the movie might not make lot of sense, but it's absolutely the most visually stunning of all the HP films. Definitely gotta give Cuarón props for that.
Also, about why they're all so much older than in the books, from what I understand, they had to age everyone up because they got Alan Rickman as Snape and needed to make sure everyone else was around the same age as him.
Why do you think that PoA "does not make a lot of sense"?
Sure, it has some logical issues like the time turner and other inconsistencies, but compared to the other books/movies there are not many problems of this type and only minor ones...
If u read the the books it makes sense
Nah…Cuaron deliberately made this movie look like a friggin’ Halloween movie for no apparent reason. He also left out a TON of important info, but he managed to waste time and money on the stupid ass Whomping Willow at the beginning of each season
@@cerostymc My sister didn't read the books as a kid and only saw the first few movies, and based on that, thought she just didn't like the series, because she couldn't keep up with the plot, who everyone was and why random things mattered to the characters. She ended up listening to the books as an adult, and liked them quite a bit. If you don't have the books as a reference point when you're watching the movies, there are actually quite huge holes in the story where some important things just aren't explained much. Things happen on screen, but they don't necessarily connect if you don't have any knowledge of the story beforehand. The movies were clearly made for people who had read the books, otherwise it's possible to struggle with understanding the whole picture.
@@elieli2893 I agree. I believe the movies are a good visual aid to people who have a hard time imagining things described in books but they can't be taken as a stand alone series.
My group of friends recently tried to get a dude who's never in his 18 years of life read the books, into the series and he asked us to show him the movies first.
He lost interest after the second one. But when we asked him to try reading the books he finished them in less than 10 days and now he loves them so much that he refuses to watch the movies. He says it'll spoil things for him.

What I really liked in this movie was how magic itself was written as subtle and "utilitarian", like we see a lot of scenes where they just wave their wands or hands to twirl a spoon on coffee, light candles, open locks, close windows, the kind of stuff you would expect to see in a world of magic, people just doing simple stuff with a wave.
It really annoys me how they still use quills and inkwells to write, when they could just use their wands like Tom did in the second movie.
@@ARCtheCartoonMaster ah yes, imagine doing a test:

The womping willow was Pettingrew, Lupin, Black and Potter(James) secret entrance to the shrieking shack, they enchanted a root that if touched made the willow dormant for some time.
Pettingrew, Black and Potter(James) learned how to change in an animal because their friend was a werewolf, its apparently really hard and normally would even needed an enchanted item (like the skin of a dog) to be able to perform, but they got really good at it through practice (every month) eventually identifying their selves as their animal counterparts, as did professor mcgonagall in becoming a cat. Black and Pettingrew were mostly acting as a dog and mouse because they were morphed, and lived as a dog and mouse for 12 years.
