There were a lot of rlly important things to note in the 6th book that were glossed over. But I do give props to the teams on set not forgetting that these were teenagers who still did teenager things like have relationships and fighting with ur best friend over a nice new book for class. I always thought it was because the commonly available love potions (like the ones sold at Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes) were less potent, and temporary. Merope Gaunt probably used a more potent love potion, and even then she had to give it to Tom Sr. at fixed intervals.

She gave him a love potion to induce him to fall in love with her and run off with her. She had to slip it into his food/drinks at regular intervals to maintain the effects. She and Tom Sr eventually have Voldemort. Sometime after, the mother convinces herself Tom Sr really loves her and stops giving him the love potion. Tom Sr abandons her and Voldemort as soon as the effects wear off, leading to Voldemort hating his muggle father and muggles in general and becoming Voldemort.
Also, in Half Blood Prince, Ron eats chocolates that were sent to Harry anonymously. Turns out the chocolates were sent by a girl who had spiked them with a love potion meant for Harry. Love potions get stronger and more dangerous the longer they sit, and these chocolates had sat for a while before Ron ate them. Ron is acting dumb and going on about how amazing this girl he barely knows is, so Harry realizes what’s happened and takes Ron to their potions professor’s office to get an antidote. While in the office, the potion starts to literally kill Ron. Ron drops to the ground and starts foaming at the mouth and his eyes roll back. (This was played for laughs/not very serious in the movie, but it was life or death in the book.) The potions professor is kind of frozen in shock. Luckily, Harry had been reading an old potions textbook with an annotation explaining that a bezoar (a stone from a goat’s stomach IIRC) is the antidote to a LOT of potions. The potions professor has them in his office, so Harry quickly grabs one and forces it in Ron’s mouth which saves Ron.

About Ron's personality, yeah the movies did him dirty by continually Flanderizing his character.
If you pay attention, the books are actually mystery novels set in a fantasy world. Harry is the detective who gets the puzzle to click, Hermione is the book-smart heart of the trio who supplies trivial knowledge, and Ron is the street-smart lancer who knows all the right contacts. Ron is able to make connections that escape Harry and Hermione because he was raised in a wizard household, and since his dad works in the Ministry he knows all the juicy rumors floating around the wizarding community.
The movies gave all his "aha!" moments to Hermione to make her the archetypal smart character, and reduced Ron to the loyal dumb muscle.

My theory is that the person who wrote all the movies, Steve Kloves, except the 5th, hated how much people liked Ron so he decided to do a character assassination of him. Kloves did favor Hermione and before the films Ron was almost everyone's favorite character. I think it also played a bit into how he portrayed Ginny. After it became indisputable that Harry and Ginny were gonna end up together he did everything in his power, in the films, to try and ruin her character to and make Harry and Hermione get together. Like making fanfiction so public and notorious as a way to try and force the author to make your ships canon.

He made no comment, but occasionally gave the potions a stir or a sniff. At last he reached the table where Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ernie were sitting. He smiled ruefully at the tar-like substance in Ron’s cauldron. He passed over Ernie’s navy concoction.

_The Half-Blood Prince_ was my favorite book of the Harry Potter novels because it finally gave us all this backstory on Severus Snape and Voldemort, and being a huge Snape fan I was looking forward to the movie adaptation... until I watched it and saw the movie had left out abut 80% of the Snape content and made a slide show out of the rest. The irony that both Severus and Tom Riddle were "Half-Bloods" with Muggle fathers and both were powerful Wizards yet Voldemort was always going on about how "Pure-Blood Wizards" were supposedly superior, how shitty James Potter's gang had treated Snape because Snape was a) poor as dirt, b) a scholarship boy, and c) a Half-Blood (well done, James Potter!). How Snape's mother had come from a pure-blooded wizarding family but was the last of her family and impoverished and destitute and married to an abuse man who mistreated her and Severus but she couldn't defend herself and her son because her wand had been taken away by the Ministery of Magic. How Severus became a Death-Eater because basically (like many relifious cults or radical movements do to draw in recruits) they welcomed him and pretended to offer him community. And how Snape came to see Dumbledore as a replacement father (just as Harry later would) but Dumbledore basically just used him as a convenient spy to infiltrate the Death-Eaters.
Nope, chuck most of that out and concentrate on the teen romance, movie script writers.

When Malfoy first used it on Hermione, she didn't understand it. It was clearly meant as an insult, but Ron had to explain the whole racial purity stuff to them. In the movies, Hermione just knew it.
Likewise, Ron was the one who stood up (with a broken ankle) and told Sirius he'd have to through them to get to Harry in PoA. Real badass/true friend moment. In the movie, he's off to the side whining, while Hermione does it.

A funny thing about this moviee/book is how Harry is suddenly amazingly good at potions when he's been pretty average all the other years. And he does this by following the instructions of the half blood prince, who we find out is Snape. • @aamay7525

I always thought that was because of how poorly Snape treated Harry. It's hard to be invested in a class where the teacher actively bullies you. But with the Half Blood Prince book, it's just Snape's good teachings, so Harry is actually receptive this time.

    • @TF2CrunchyFrog

@@aamay7525 Exactly. Snape is brilliant at Potions (both the theoretical magic side and the practical brewing/alchemy side) and at Defense against the Dark Arts and at dueling. But he's honestly crap at being a teacher. If Harry had been told beforehand that the textbook had belonged to younger Severus Snape, Harry would've subconsciously rejected learning from it, too. Because Harry is also a dumbass who never tried to see things from Snape's perspective or stopped to wonder why Snape was acting like this; although Harry at least has the excuse of being a teenager at the time.

In the books Luna is portrayed as being crazy because she is wrong about most of the stuff. In the 7th book, in an important moment it's shown further that Luna's household in general is... not really all there. It's just another case of the movie butchering the source material, and they did it a lot ever since the 3rd one, getting worse and worse. The scene at Luna's house that I mentioned earlier was changed completely, and Hermione in the book typically dismantled whatever bs Luna and her father were spouting, culminating in the horn that Hermione correctly identified as being something way more dangerous than what Luna's father thought, and for Hermione to use it to escape from the Death Eaters by making it explode and destroying the entire house.
I hate the movies so much...
Also forgot to mention how they ignored like 80% of the lessons with Dumbledore, which had important stories about the possible horcrux and Voldemort's birth being the result of his mother raping his father, and that's not even acknowledged...

This book is one of my favorites of the series, just because it really is a nice break before the endgame and it also lets Ginny as a character shine when she's been in the background for so long. Yes, it's a lot of teen awkwardness, but they deserve to be teens for a little bit! It's like enjoying the wedding in the next book before everything goes down - you need the levity before the angst and tragedy. Plus, it has some really nice lore sprinkled throughout that all pays off in the last book.
This movie is uh. Fine. When I wanted teen awkwardness, I didn't mean like this. It's almost impressive how the romance scenes with Harry in the last three movies have gotten progressively more cringey with each iteration - and I know it's likely just direction, since the actors are usually decent in every other scene. It just feels like they didn't know how to translate the fun banter from book to screen? (They could have just used the actual lines from the books, but I digress.) But the thing it did get right was that last scene with Dumbledore. Even when I knew what was coming, it absolutely got me when I first watched it and I was not prepared for the feelings.
