Personally I think tv shows should go back to the 20+ episodes format rather than the 8-10 they're using nowadays, almost everything feels rushed because of that... especially when the source material are such iconic books
True. Like it’s way better than the movie but it’s still doesn’t have the full potential it could have with these iconic books. Hope it changes for the better though.
i feel like for this show it's better to have long episodes and they probably wouldn't be able to do that with 20+ episodes
Miss the 20+ episodes
the biggest problem is also that we only get 8-10 episodes with like max 24 minute content cause half of the episode is recap and credits 💀 if they was an hour long content like game of thrones did then 8-10 episodes would be fine too
@@Mimi-lk2tb 100% agree! Last week chapter felt too short, and in twitter they're saying next chapters are gonna be the same... hopefully next season they consider this and make them longer :(
Somehow the trio already know EVERYTHING. They know aunty em is medusa, they know ares, they know what the lotus casino is and what it will do to them. Half of the fight is supposed to be them using their knowledge and skills to figure it out. Now there's no tension, no suspense, stuff just happens.
And also, in the books, before Percy jumps off the arch, he prays to his father for the first time and asks for protection. It's a really significant moment because it's the first time Percy accepts his father and along with that the Greek world. In the series he just falls.
But for him to pray for his father at that moment in the book also didn't make sense and is bad for both characters, him accepting him when so far his feelings towards the guy were pretty bad is honestly nonsense and Poseidon only helping if he prays for him even if he's about to die just makes you hate the guy even more, this was better for both characters imo.

This is EXACTLY why I hated the show
they’re seriously simplifying it for little kids it’s annoying. i’m sorry but not everything needs to be made for 5 year olds to understand
I'd have to disagree; Annabeth is mad smart, Grover is 24, and Percy's mom told him stories about anything & everything Gods; they clearly didn't know everything but this type of stuff was common sense for them(atleast for Beth and Grover--) and THEY WERE literally always figuring it out as they went. Also you could clearly see in a lot of the shots how confused Percy was because Grover and Annabeth never told him anything(js like in the books) and since your talking ab the Medusa scene, if you remember; Percy actually was so confused and only looked away from her bcs Grover and Annabeth did too. Stop blaming the show js because you cant pay attention.
The most unrealistic part of this series is that a kid named “Nancy BOBOFIT” wouldn’t be bullied constantly in middle school
That’s why she became a bully, if they were scared of her then they couldn’t say shit. Either that or the phrase “every bully has a bully”
Maybe she bullies people because she knows she's next lmao, "Damn I got a dumb name I gotta attack first"
she doesn't get bullied cause her father is the Bobofet
It could have been worse. Her parents could have been a fan of the anime and named their daughter Bobobo-bo Bo Bobofit.

The show actually opens exactly the way the book does
Just the fact that they actually got it right that the Fury was a MATH teacher is already just a huge step up from the movies. I will never understand how the first movie fumbled that part when it's literally the TITLE OF THE FIRST CHAPTER of the book.

Honestly, most of this TV show seems accurate to the book even if it is fast paced for a TV show. Only thing that’s wrong is Annabeth. Where is the smart witty warrior girl that we read about?
Honestly I'm most mad at how they portrayed Sally and Gabe's relationship. The whole point was to show how much Sally was willing to sacrifice to protect Percy. Here, they made Gabe just seem like some mildly annoying housemate instead of the abusive stepfather and husband he was. He literally hit Sally in the books. She's scared of him but stays anyway for Percy. She is not able to boss him around like in the show. This would also water down how and why Percy is so protective of her, which we read about even until the moment Paul Blofis tells him he's going to propose to Sally.
And Medusa episode is so dispointing. They just deafeat medusa in 5 second.😅😅 No fighting sence at all, put invisible hat on Medusa head WTF. (thats not even include in the book). The flim had better than this series.

Exactly😂 Poor guy can't catch a break
And as soon as he shows up to said "safe haven" he has to go on a quest to hades 😂

Honestly Percy's lack of reaction in a lot of these scenarios is kinda reasonable. Imagine you're a 12 year old and find out your best friend is a magical creature, the mix of shock, processing the information and the "how cool is this" factor works well for a kid. Its trying to be accurate? Luke is asian and annabeth is a short black girl
The major gripe I have with the show is how everything seems anticlimactic. They immediately figure out that Auntie Em is Medusa and kill her by just putting Annabeth's invisibility cap on her and slicing her head off, instead of a full-on chase/fight scene using their ingenuity. Really powerful monster chasing you? Just immediately pop Medusa's head out. Other than that, it feels good. The casting feels odd for some characters, mainly Annabeth and Luke. Luke doesn't feel like the guy to turn on the gods and steal Zeus' lightning bolt, nor one of the best warriors in camp. Annabeth just feels like a robot; she's too stiff, too monotone. Good show, though
Yes exactly!! There's no suspense or tension. Luke and Annabel are so dull compared to their book counterparts. (I don't blame the actors cuz they're just children.)
I couldn't agree with you more. I am so bored by the show, because they are over-explaining everything. Monsters appear and they immediately figure out who they are or the monsters and gods explain themselves. All the exitement is gone.
@@fairychambermythandmagicEXACTLY! There’s no tension! The only reason the show is good is because of the acting 😭
At this point it’s more interesting when he’s in the human world !!
Ummmmm....
I mean to be fair, Luke's not SUPPOSED to feel like an obvious antagonist? It's literally supposed to be a twist for people who don't know the story. If they made him "seem" too much like the puppet of Kronos you'd be complaining just as much about it on the other end of the spectrum.
All and all the first "season" was a fantastic adaptation of the first book, especially now that they're all out and you can watch them back to back. I fully expect it to get even better not only just because of the series' plot thickening but also because the kid actors' talents are only gonna get better too as the series progresses
To be fair, Luke’s initial role was always this “tour guide” esque position. As leader of the Hermes cabin, he’d be in charge of explaining all of it to anyone new, just by the nature of his responsibilities. Of course his role is very different later on, but at the beginning he is very much a plot device lol

Coming from an OG PJ fan:
Although I like the show as is, there are definitely a couple things I would do differently. The humor, for one, is a big part for me. There was so much humor and sarcasm in the books that I feel was mostly glossed over by the show, and what jokes there as few and far between, at least for me. You’re supposed to believe that Percy and the gang are bouncing off each other and just joking around, but the humor of the script feels almost stale. I don’t know if that will get better over time, but I hope so.
Another thing ( a bit more minor) is that so far, it doesn’t feel like Percy is really the “leader” of the quest. It’s mostly just Annabeth and Grover carrying him along like a puppet. I know that there’s supposed to be shock and Percy trying to scramble to keep up with his new life as a demigod, but it feels like he just lags behind everyone else, when in the books, Rick created a great balance of Percy stepping up as a leader, while also being a teammate to Annabeth and Grover.
Just my thoughts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I have the exact same thoughts. The humor is so important for the tone and it's just not right.
I think they made Percy that way to make him relatable and realistic to how a 12 year old would really feel and act through all this, where in the books he is an overpowered 12 year old savage taking on the god damn world, challenging anything and anyone no matter, and annabeth and Grover need to hold him back from jumping everyone and remind him he is not invincible and can actually die😆😂🤣
Idk which I like more tbh, the books are so good but I was about to fall of a chair many times by how savage Percy is, and how insanely unrealistic everything is (yess I know it is already, cuz well Greek gods exists) but like I just felt unnatural despite the premises of the book. Show Percy is more relatable, a confused 12 year old stumbling through everything figuring it out as he goes, yet still brave and very Percy like with savage jokes.
So I honestly like both alot.
You're spot on with the lack of humor in the show. There are so many good lines in the book that never made their way into the show. When they're at the Arch in St. Louis and they meet Echidna, Percy goes, "Like the animal from Australia?" And Echidna responds with something like, "I hated how they named that animal after me!" It's obviously funnier in the book.
I think the show is so far taking itself a little too seriously (although the most recent episode in the Lotus Casino does have some more comedic bits ), even though a lot of the humor that comes from the books is the sometimes goofy and ridiculous mashup between Greek mythology and the modern world. Hopefully this just means that the later seasons will have something to grow on. The actors will mature and be better able to work off the writing.
I wouldn't exect it to be different. From we can see with how gabe was more like a rude housemate than an abusive husband, they are not going to allow a white boy to somehow be stronger than a girl (especially a black girl, cause ofc she had to be) or a black guy, or lead them in any way.
That's one of many reasons why woke stuff just doesn't work. It selfsabotages by needing some characters (girls and POC) people to ALWAYS win, so it ends up demanding that everything around them gets dragged down so they can be better.
Honestly I like the humor better here because it's not over the top every other line is a one liner MCU bullshit. Percy in the first movie adaptation once or twice made me say "ha, hm, that's kinda funny".
Percy in this series, when he's allowed to be funny, actually made me legit laugh. Especially during his first exchange with Mr. D. I definitely get more of a genuine smartass tone from this Percy.
I'll take your point about there being less comedy in general on the whole tho and imo I feel like it's just simply an over-correction from the first adaptation which we all know Riodan didn't like, cuz man if you rewatch the first movies alot of the humor DID age like generic cliche MCU one liner quips instead of being actually genuine humor.
I'm sure they'll find a balance in the future seasons.
The part where it cuts to Percy flossing was to me a perfect example of something not in the books, but completely fits Percy's character. Staying true to the essence of the characters is the most important part, and I think the show is doing that well so far!
Percy would NEVER dance

9:53 Its actually kinda morbid why all the kids are around the same age. Its because kids are only susceptible to being easily tracked by monsters as they near Percy’s age but demigods don’t tend to make it into their adult years because they are hunted down and killed
Well that and when they do reach adulthood they're kind of on their own because camp halfblood is like a training summer camp to prepare them for the rest of their lives.
Yeah, the books never really go into what happens after Camp Halfblood. I can't imagine it's all that great. Imagine living a 9 to 5 job after fighting man-eating monsters throughout childhood. Though I bet you could sell the drachmas and other antiques that crop up from time to time for a pretty penny. Gold's still worth quite a bit, after all.

'Shoved her without shoving her' , You can clearly see in the show how confused he is ab the fact she got pushed in. He constantly tells everyone 'I didn't touch her' but she still got shoved in. So in my opinion the whole 'shoved her without shoving her' came to life extremely well.

Saying that Percy had no reaction to his mother dying, while also skipping over the scene where he kills the minotaur is wild.
And where he tries to speak to her with the blue sweets
yes, he had no reaction to his mother dying in the moment of her death. We should see a glimpse of sadness or anger in this scene, but he just... looking at her, being worry. That doesn't work, and making a point that ,,killing minotaur'' is reaction to her death is just misunderstanding. Honestly, after watching this video, the biggest thing which stuck out to me was Percy's reaction to all of this. I feel like I remember the beginning portion of the first book being this cycle > Percy does something > gets gaslight by everyone > has a panic attack and this repeats a few times. From what I saw Percy seemed really chill, I'd imagine its because its hard to portray someone in a constant state of panic and anxiety.

I definitely think its going to build and build throughout the season. I'm rereading the book right now and you can really tell how his anger and frustration builds

I feel like it would have added a lot more weight to Grover's initial betrayal / satyr reveal, the 'death' of Percy's mom etc.
The camp portions fell flat for me save for the more emotionally driven moments, but episode 3 was pretty strong thanks to some standout acting and expanding character dynamics - I think it's just a matter of the actors hitting their stride and giving the story some time to grow a bit.

@zephyrekansh7120 I'm Greek. Personally, I don't care if the demigods are different races because the human part can be any race and I'm used to book inaccuracy. The looks part doesn't affect their characters. Percy looks like a nerd. Grover looks warm and down to earth. Annabeth looks very pretty yet fierce. @zephyrekansh7120 I meant he's the only one that looks Greek. And we are a "darker" tone compared to a lot of other Caucasians. Most of us have olive skin, dark eyes and hair. Our skin usually isn't so pale or white, though there are exceptions. Yet, the majority of the Gods looked like that. It ain't just about color, like I wouldn't want fairer-skinned Asians playing us either. Also, I agree that Dionysus was too goofy, considering that he had a solid story. Yeah, the Zeus thing annoyed me, but it hardly makes a difference since none of them look or sound typically Greek anyway. It is all Americanized, so I kind of accepted it. I don't care about the demigods, but I wanted the Gods to be Greek because of the culture they represent. Oh well, can't be too picky, haha. This is an American show after all. At least the acting is mostly good.
As someone who DID actually read the books, I like this show. For me, it's exactly how a show adaptation of the books should be

I do feel like Gabe was a little too nice though compared to the books.
@kirschkonfet agreed
YES!! I thought this too. He was rather exasparated and hilarious, and not seemed so abusive. He gave me a different vibe than book-Gabe.
(a little bit SPOILER!!)
So if they give him the same fate which he also got in the book, I hope they will show more scenes with him, because based on this few scenes, I don't think he deserves his book-fate.
I could count about twenty inaccuracies in the first 2 episodes, and I haven't read the first book in years. I did like the show though.

@@aylbdrmadison1051 Honestly I feel that way a lot about him. He doesn't ever have something he likes. Same goes for most peoples' reactions to the show.
This version completely lacks the sense of humor that existed in the books, everything is also overly-explained. For example in the book it takes many weeks before the trio realizes that they are being hold hostage in the casino and Percy realizes that when the teen ager next to him is wearing 70s clothes playing a game machine (and it is a really funny scene). In the series they realize it the moment they step into casino, that the whole place is owned by the lotus eaters. The, fun the exitement, the threat..it's all gone. I don't know how they managed to turn such a funny book into such a boring show. I am incredibly dissappointed with Rick Riordan. I almost wish that there was a narrator, adding some of Percy's fun snarks.
While I will say that the acting from most of the characters could use some work, we actually get more details in each scene than we do in the book. The book itself is not that long, so it's not that the pacing in the show is too fast because they are trying to cram 5 books in one season (they're not, the entire first season is just the first book), but that is how Percy is experiencing life form the moment Mrs. Dobbs attacks him. It's quite literally one thing right after the other.
Unpopular opinion but Gabe seems pretty reasonable compared to the novel. If I hadnt read the book then I would not have hated him.
Edit: This is my most liked comment and it's about smelly Gabe out of all people
I actually thought the same thing when I saw the episode. Rick did a better job depicting him as a dirtbag in the book, but I like that the show shows that he still has qualities of someone that Sally could try to justify staying around
Spoilers for the book but I’m curious if this Gabe will end up the same way as the book one. I mean in the books it’s kind of implied that he was physical with her so murdering him does seem kind of justified but this tv one doesn’t seem deserving of straight up murder

Walker Scobell was a young Ryan Reynolds in "The Adam Project", and his snarky banter and resemblance to Reynolds made him a perfect choice. Same goes for his casting as Percy here.

Honestly the more I watch the show, the more I love the movie. I don’t dislike the show, but the movie was so iconic. The fact that they were older meant they could do things differently. How they fought Medusa was so cool, the road trip they go on blasting Highway to Hell, fighting the janitor hydra, going wild at the casino and how Percy figures out the trap - the fact that they only brought 3 pearls to the underworld is so funny. There are so many aspects of the movie that I greatly appreciate.
Also yes I’ve read the books.
Glad to see someone else who loves the movie. I watched it the other day to see if maybe it was nostalgia but no, it's still a pretty fun movie.

Percy is the only child of poseidon for a very long time, so while it makes sense all the other half bloods were born from one night stands, it is feasable that sally and poseidon actually spent some time togethor.
If you read the books, it's hinted that they spent a considerable amount of time together, and that Poseidon left her only reluctantly.
In the books Sally said they've spend one summer together. Plenty of time to get to know each other and share one night of passion.
@@CipherRage-tp5ql was it a whole summer? That certainly sounds right. There was also that whole bit of Poseidon offering her a palace under the sea
it’s also (i believe mostly) because Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades all made a deal about having no more kids, while the other gods didn’t. though i definitely believe Percy was born because Poseidon did love Sally and only her for a decent amount of time, unlike the other gods with many of their children’s parents being at most fling types due to ages
@@TheEnder515 yeah I know, I read the books.
My biggest problem with the show is how Toothless it is. It’s so Disney plused all sense of edge or danger is just removed. That Medusa death scene was just so bad
Even her design was toned waaaay down which is a shame
Its so much information because that's how Percy feels. The boy is so young and has so much going on all at once that he doesn't actively have time to digest any of the information. He's basically running an a long form of adrenaline until after his first quest. Which I believe is a very smart play from the Directors as they can cram all the lore into the first couple episodes and then go ham on the storyline after that.
I think the show definitely spend more time on Percy mourning his mother. He has the single tear moment when he woke up the next morning and realize it was all real, and he talked to her by fire in a can. It shows that he actually cares that his mom is dead as opposed to the movie where it seems like Percy barely feels anything. Also, I think they handled the whole "dyslexia" "ADHD" thing way better in the show. They showed Percy struggling with reading and struggling to focus on the "real" world because he is getting lost in what he thinks are daydreams and it shows him having anxiety about the fear that something is broken in his brain. It doesn't exposit this info in the really shitty inorganic way that the movie does.
You mean like the way everything in the room is hard to read except the one Greek thing. You know because the dyslexic
Is a problem stemming from him being half Greek god!?!? Do you even think or did you get lost in the daydreams to?
@@richerdclark7501In the movies Dyslexia is shown as a superpower, not a side effect. Dismissing the fact that the visual representation of dyslexia in the movie wasn’t done well, movie Percy can read Ancient Greek automatically. This shouldn’t be the case. Book Percy needed to be taught the language, it took him several days to even learn a phrase. He struggles with reading Greek and much as he does with English. Book Percy’s dyslexia isn’t a superpower from the gods, it’s a side effect. In fact, there are demigods who don’t have dyslexia and are still powerful. Dyslexia for demigods is a side effect of their godly heritage yes, but that doesn’t make it any less of a disability. Movies did this poorly by portraying dyslexia as something useful, whereas book Percy struggles with reading even the most basic signs, with his knowledge of Ancient Greek rarely being useful. Book Percy’s dyslexia actively hinders his ability to survive, since he walks right into many monster’s lairs because he reads their name tag wrong and doesn’t recognize their true identity.
TLDR: movie Percy dyslexia is a superpower, book Percy dyslexia is a disability that he overcomes with his character

Main issue I had with the first episode was that Percy and his mom really didn’t have any onscreen chemistry to me. In the books and even in the movie (yes, I’m going there), you could tell how close Percy and his mom were but in this show so far their interactions feel awkward, like the actors don’t know each other. Hopefully that’ll improve as the series goes on but their scenes honestly felt to me like two people just reading their lines and not connecting.
Annabeth is supposed to be blonde, throughout the books she is motivated by the fact that she wants to prove that all blondes aren't stupid. She is also supposed to have grey eyes to signify her athena heritage.
Also, luke and percy should have had switched hair colors.
As an original fan I actually don’t mind all the info dumping because that’s basically how you feel reading any first book of a fantasy novel series.

My favourite part of the book was when Poseidon claims percy and all campers kneel before him. I was quite disappointed that they didn't include the kneeling part :/
Just hope they don't mess up the fight between percy and Thalia in titan's curse...
I heard that they toned Gabe down in order not to trigger kids going through a similar situation. That could just be hearsay, but I think it is true that abuse is much easier to digest and process in a written format for children than a visual one, so I would understand if that was what influenced their decision, though it'd feel a bit weird if this version of Gabe met the same fate as his book counterpart.
i feel like the kneeling thing doesnt make sense. do they kneel EVERY time a camper is claimed? i doubt it. idk it just felt weird when i read it

Luke seems to be the closest character between him and the books, he’s like a helpful guardian to Percy. And also maybe Mr D
That's an excuse for covering bad actors.
Besides, the kid isn't expressing shock, he's clearly trying to look sad but he's failing cause he is a CHILD and making an entire series full of child actors is fucking stupid which is why nobody does it and in the movies they aged everyone UP. Which don't get me wrong, the movies were crap too, and they didn't do a thorough job of updating the characters and everything after aging them up, and the acting was still kinda shit, but they WERE smart enough to know they didn't wanna deal with a dozen 12 year olds carrying the entire movie.
No, all the acting I've seen so far from the kids is crap, and most of the adults honestly aren't that much better. Luke isn't a kid, and he's at least passable, but the dialogue isn't helping. The writing is honestly the worst part of this show so far, it's 90% exposition, 100% of that is FLAT exposition, and then there's like 10% for jokes that aren't funny.

I agree. I love the show so far but at this point it would make no sense turning him into stone. It wouldn‘t be an act of independence and selfcare since Sally could easily leave Gabe behind.
exactlyy he looks like a loser instead of an abuser. ill die if they dont show how much of an asshole he is bc then theres no reason to kill him with medusa too
The showrunners including Rick and his wife talked about how live-action Gabe was just too upsetting and triggering and changed the tone of every scene he was in too much, so they had to tone it down
@@claytravis2383that’s dumb why would they do that. Gabe is literally meant to be an ab*sive asshole and more of a reason for Percy to want to avenge his mom and in general why he is so protective of her and his loved ones. I haven’t watched the show, I’m kind of not on principle (barring a lot of the casting I’m actually very mad about Percy being blonde and it was enough to make me say “no”). But if you’re gonna do a story about a demigod, most of which canonically have difficult home lives, and not make on of his catalysts the catalyst, don’t freaking do the damn story….
@@claytravis2383 lol that makes no sense
'oh no!! our mean guy is mean... :c....'
I mean, my mother died when i was 7 and my reaction was pretty much the same as percy, other such things happened in my life such as losing my grandmother when i was 16 and my reaction was still the same, shock, internal rage and suffering. It's not unusual to have no expressions when bombarded by info, you just take it and go along couse you cant do much after all.
I'm currently listening to the audiobook, and no, the pacing is honestly very accurate to the book. And Percy's reactions as well. Without the direct access to his inner monologs, it makes him come across as a bit more slow to react, but he's very much the same in the books. He's a very internal screaming character.
My only thing is when I saw Clarisse I was like “she’s suppose to be big and ugly”😂 but the actor plays her personality well
That was a concern for me too, I wasn't sure if the actress would be able to portray just how intimidating book clarisse was supposed to be but holy shit was I ever impressed by the performance, she perfectly incapsulates clarisses viciousness and cruelty. I don't think I've ever seen a more perfect casting choice
Ive told people this before constantly Rick Riordan himelf chose rach and every actor for their ability to play the role@karlhawkins5164
The casting is terrible.
@JeroginoldBlamford it really isn't it's actually really good every single actor has knocked it out of the park
yall really need to get over how the characters are described in the book vs the show. Do you really want them to go look for "ugly" 13 year olds to play this character? that would be so fucked up
Authors are not script writers. JK Rowling was heavily involved in “Crimes of Grindelwald,” and we all know how THAT turned out.
Pacing is definitely off and the spider man like jokes Percy is well known for making/thinking are not present yet. Something is off and for being the clear son of the charismatic Hermes Luke is so so wooden compared to his film version
I think theyre coming in, ex. his sarcasm around Dionysus@rubberduck524
It was better than this shit at least
@@jacobwilson1809 lmao this shit is great, the crimes of grindelwald was trashfire
Yeah, its like when people expect great singers to also be good at writing lyrics or playing an instrument, completely different skillsets, theres a reason why those who are good at 2 or all 3 of those things become generational stars
when you are writing, its all in the usage of words, and descriptions, and trying to portray and express yourself the best you can. Movies are kinda the opposite, general audience usualyl likes "show rather than tell" way more, and its a skill to have the least "tell" while "showing" everything you need
and like someone above said, pacing is also a big one, pacing can definitely make or break a movie, its a bit more forgiving when it comes to episodic shows for obvious reasons, but still present nonetheless
“Luke only exists to explain every single thing of everything.” Little do you know.
I’ve read the books and in my opinion this show sucks.
The acting is horrible especially the adult characters and it was frustrating to watch Sally Jackson’s long monologue in the first episode because she was talking two words at a time and then would start talking again after about 7 seconds of silence had passed.
The writing is bad and cringy and the whole cast has no energy. It feels like everyone in the show are just saying there lines not actually acting. Many characters like Annabeth, Luke, and even Percy don’t feel like they are delivering there lines with a purpose and in my opinion, Disney channel shows like Hannah Montana has better acting than whatever this is.
In multiple instances in the show like for example, the water fountain scene, the cgi looks like the Black widow cgi and the minotaur scene looks like the Harry Potter troll from the first movie.
Another problem I have IS THE FADING TO BLACK EVERY SECOND. Like it is so anoying, unnecessary, and gets on my last nerve.
I don’t really have problem with them “race swapping” multiple characters but the acting portrayal of many of the characters are so out of left field that it doesn’t even feel like that character anymore.
Also the pacing was nonexistent and it didn’t even feel like a proper tv show/ story it just felt like a bunch of scenes thrown together (basically what I’m trying to say was there was no flow).
The camera angles and cinematography felt so boring a repetitive there were times where I was just thinking to myself please just please give me a cool, creative camera angle that will capture at least some of the books charm.
This show is horrible and feels like empty shell of what the books were. And I know this may seem like an unpopular opinion but I prefer the movies because at least the movies were at least fun to watch the show has just been painful so far.
IT FEELS EMOTIONLESS! FINALLY SOMEONE AGREES- EVERYONE IS SO CAUGHT UP IN THE FACT THAT RICK IS INVOLVED BUT LIKE THE ACTING IS SO MID.
Personally as someone who has all of the books memorized, the only thing I don’t like so far from the first 2 episodes is their portrayal of grover as a snitch because its nothing like how he was in the novels
he’s not actually a snitch. he had to do it so percy didn’t get attacked at the school. he literally explains that.
I mostly meant that I just don’t really like how they are portraying him because they skip the cloven elders scene, and he doesn’t seem to be as scared (or scared at all) of Dionysus
Truth be told the situation was *worse* in the original book, Grover and Chiron are both content to gaslight Percy into thinking he _didn't_ see Ms. Dodds reveal herself as one of the Furies for the whole of the second semester, it's great. 🤣
@@Boss_Isaac I know and they kinda brushed over the fight with alecto
@@spidersmining20
From what I saw in the video, it seems that in the series that Percy only just _saw_ Mrs. Dodds, he didn't kill her?
I’ve was so surprised about how emotional I got watching the first two episodes. The series was a big part of my childhood and helped get me through a particularly rough battle with leukemia. After the disappointing movie adaptation, this was so refreshing to see. And the kid who plays Percy in particular is great!
Yeah, it's being so refreshing to see it in a more book-accurate perspective. The kids' acting is really good, but tbh I knew Walker would do a great job bc I saw some clips of him in The Adam Project and the kid was already acting like Percy there 😂😂 btw congrats on fighting Leukemia! Hope you're doing well by now.
Riordan calling his fans racist if they had a problem with the casting (not the actors themselves) killed any chance of me watching it tbh.😂
Thank you!
It’s still so weird trying to like Annabeths character she isn’t the Annabeth the books made her to be.
yes honesly shes a little more introverted than i wouldve liked annabeth to be.
@@rikka1419 She doesn't act like Annabeth does. She's more stuck up and more attitude. And don't get me started on Gabe.
For Me...
Pros: Walker is AMAZING as Percy. His line delivery is fantastic and he genuinely made me laugh out loud a few times. He has that Percy sarcasm down perfectly. The relationship with him and his mother is great and I actually felt something when she died. I like that she went out of her way to protect him from the minotaur. I know my Mom would do the same thing for me in a moment like that. I think the look of the world and especially Camp Half Blood is fantastic, it looks exactly like how I pictured it while reading. And for the most part the stunts and VFX all look great for a series.
Cons: The pacing is really off. I felt like episode 1 rushed through SO much important establishing moments. The story was moving a mile a minute and I feel like non book readers are gonna get whiplash. The encounter with Dodds was like 30 seconds long, she wasn't established at all prior to that scene, and neither was Mr. Brunner. He gives Percy the pen in such a random way and the action really lacked intensity for me. Gabe isn't nearly enough of an asshole and having Sally stand up to him immediately removes so much development for her going forward. I don't see him abusing her whatsoever. He was mildly annoying but nothing at all like the book. I kinda wish Percy freaked out a little more at all the crazy shit happening around him and how insane this new life is. The capture the flag scene doesn't show Percy getting strength from the water, it just heals him. He's supposed to be a terrible fighter until he gets wet. I wish the Big Three were fleshed out more and why Percy being alive is such a big deal. Also there was a lack of Annabeth. She's supposed to spend more time with Percy prior to capture the flag and for what we got so far, it just didn't impress me. They made her so stoic and boring.
I totally agree. Plus i felt that walker was the most Percy , when he was bored waiting in the woods during capture the flag. I love both actors for
Annabeth and Percy, but they made them both so stoic and I always imagened them like they were bursting with energy. But I hope we will see them livelier in the next episodes
All the moments of him being snarky, sarcastic, or just giving a weird look were amazing. "you fell in love.. with God?... like Jesus?" lmao. Him peeing in the woods and looking around making sure nobody was coming was hilarious. I'm hoping for more chemistry as well because it's a little bit off between all the young actors @@blumehh
@@Luke101 yes exactly
Completely agree. I loved walker as percy but they made annabeth kinda boring plus they totally skipped the time they spent while she was showing him around the camp (instead of luke). I feel like other than those who have read the books most people would prolly not like the show that much. The plot progresses way too fast and the audience has no time to process everything that has happened and this basically loses all the emotional weight of the scenes. Hopefully it gets better
luke makes more sense. it is really going to build up the betrayal we feel by the end of the season, and we will get lots of annabeth in the next episodes
Saw the tittle and I’m nervous, Percy Jackson is literally my childhood. Idk if I’m over correcting because of how bad the movies were, but I really liked the show.
No the show was really good!
I’m a huge fan of the books and I love the show so far!
Im a fan of the books but so far the show is subpar
The show has it's pains that comes with being an adaptation (some things feel way more rushed in a show than when you just read them in the books), but so far it's pretty great. As a fan of the books, it's very clear that Rick and the people that made the show actually cared about it.
@@awsomerobyn2603 I am not trying to disagree with you, but with the Poseidon cabin, I think it was meant to seem dark and uninviting on purpose? Like, to represent how Percy feels alone because he’s the “only” child of the big three. (Spoiler alert, but lol, nope). I think that it was an artistic choice, and I hope that at the end of the show there is a mirroring shot, where it’s him with all
His freinds hanging out in a brightly lit cozy cabin.
Just came back to this video and thinking about how Alex mentions that all of the mortal parents of demigods don’t mean anything to the Olympian gods, as they have procreated with so many mortals. But, episode 7 showed that Sally IS different and Poseidon does cherish her and care for her. She didn’t even have time to say an actual prayer before he came running when she made an offering.
the mouse cursor joke really got me, because i did indeed spend what felt like hours to download a mouse cursor only for it to not always work
Saying I was terrified of you going to make this video is an understatement.
I watched the other two videos at midnight, woke up and rolled my eyes at this. Knew bro was gonna nitpick 😭
@@anon0r758 Not his fault you like a shityy book and show
@@jamesconlin5099 respectfully, i dont agree, but you are allowed to have ur own opinion.
@@jamesconlin5099 It's not even whether or not you think the books are bad. Like I can agree, it's fast paced even though its meant to be that way for kids. But. He's so negative about all his reviews, it was just annoying to see another review that I knew as for sure gonna get the same nitpicks as the previous Percy things
especially when he purposefully omits things to hammer a point about the previous movies made. Percy had a reaction to his mom dying, but bro left it out
I think a couple of reasons the episodes feel so jam packed is cause they have eight episodes to show everything (cause the movies straight up cutout Waterland and a bunch of other stuff) and they state the show is basically “for the fans” so there’s a caveat that more people who read the books and knows what’s going on/coming up will be watching so they can more afford to just speed through stuff, if that makes Any sense at all
(Also the books, or at least this book happens within a short time period as well so there really isn’t a lot of time for a character to fully process what happened before going on)
I wish they had more episodes to flesh the story out. Honestly pjo deserves like 15 to let the emotional moments breath and make the exposition more digestable.
Like i still love it, dont get me wrong, but the pacing really stuck out to me when i watched it
@@j_fenrir I think that’s more Disney’s fault than anything else cause almost every Disney+ original project is like this in forms of how many episodes there are per season cause if there’s a common complaint with the Marvel shows that have come out, it’s the pacing
So make more episodes tho?
The characterisations of everyone except Percy and Clarise is just off.
Luke is supposed to be bitter at the gods.
Annabeth is SMART but she is also patient enough to explain to us dummies / the audience the plan afterwards.
Grover has no confidence and should have been terrified of standing up to Mr D.
Chiron is far more bumbling and kinda pathetic
Mr D is fun crazy not vengeful and crazy.
Gabe is nowhere near as awful as he is in the books.
And Sally? I'm not seeing what it is about her that made Posiedon break his vow to create Percy. There's supposed to be a quiet dignity and strength about her. That she can endure the hardships of life because she can see the bright side and is perceptive and a little rebellious.
Honestly more than anything I do hope they keep making the show, I'm scared it might get cancelled. I think it would heal the inner child in me if titan's curse was in the series, I spent forever hoping they would come out with another. I know a lot of the movies didn't do the books much justice but seeing the magic come to life was the best part. The series is a big step up from that

Annabeths actor didn’t really work, her line delivery was just always…poor.
The book is super fast paced too, so it didn’t really bother me. I’m enjoying it so far.
books and tv are different mediums. I hate that argument that the book was fast paced so i's okay that the show is rushing through everything. The pacing hasn't been good so far.
@@TheRealMallard the book was fast paced, the show is too fast paced.
@@cowardly_wizardthe book was fast paced because books can be fast paced. Movies and tv shows are visual and auditory. Not simple reading information. It isn’t supposed to be rushed.

And about the lack of the expressions on the death .... at least now he cryed 😅
low key, the new series is so good. at least so far. Books are way easier to make a TV series out of than just one movie. It's far harder to squeeze an entire book into 1 movie, while a tv series gives writers the most freedom to fit in what they feel is necessary to best replicate the book.
