A minor detail I appreciated is that Layla ends up in sidekick class due to her protesting the assessment rather than Coach Boomer somehow not comprehending how powerful plant manipulation is.
She literally calls it fascist. I first saw this movie I was like 25 and I was in AWE by that line. It's really sad how the writers clearly wanted to tell a much deeper tale but they seemingly had to drop it, but some of it still wound up in the final product, and it makes you think "god... What if?"
One of the main points with Layla was that she was super powerful. The movie acknowledges it, Layla just refused to 'show off' during gym so she got placed in sidekick class. Honestly, her refusing to show her powers to the coach was kinda silly but also 100% a hill that a fourteen-year-old girl would die on so it tracks.
She had principles that she stuck to, I don’t agree with how much of a stickler she was about it. But honestly super respectable, and when she threw hands….woooof 😮
What's really funny about the lemon joke where she couldn't make lemons is that limes and oranges make lemons humans crossbreed the different fruits to get them. Meaning she's got control over the natural plants not man-made ones
Fun fact: The actor who played Warren Peace auditioned for the role of Jacob in Twilight, but ultimately lost to Taylor Lautner. I wish I could watch the alternative reality version of the movie where he got the part, tbh.
I love how in the end the principal goes "I'm not Wonder Woman, you know," when she was, quite literally, Wonder Woman (she was played by Lynda carter).
@@hilmilosnowball7740 Will and Layla are actually together though. So, if your opinion is support of a Layla and Warren ship, it's just genuinely false.
As a kid Sky High was actually really good to me. I used to watch it so much thinking it was Disney's version of the Avengers or JLA. What I would give to have such a pure unfiltered outlook on life again.
That phone joke with Will's dad is still great even to this day. Funny to think how something simple as super strength could cause you worry about things like breaking a phone constantly.
I feel this movie wanted to really lean into the boring things we never see about heroes... The creators of Kim Possible were involved, I believe. Could it be they pitched a show and Disney just greenlit a movie?
My mom used to laugh a lot at this part because it reminds her of herself, always snapping her pens in half when she's angry and needing to pull out a new one.
@@ARealPerson21 no they just get angry like any other person.. regular people clench their fist or like to punch a pillow.. super strength heroes are the same just if they had a phone in their hand and got angry it just so happens to break the phone🤷🏻♂️
They made Layla extremely pacifist. That's why she didn't do jacksht with her powers up until near the end. Out of everyone in the cast, her and Warren had the strongest powers.
Plant powers have insane possibilities and on one hand its kind of sad she doesn't tap into their full potential, but on the other hand I think thats the difference between someone whos peaceful and somoene whos harmless and giving her insanely powerful abilities drive home that she chooses not to fight
1. Why is Warren Peace a sidekick? 2. Why are the bullies helping the super villain when they're going to school to be heroes? 3. Will the bullies stand trial for treason against humanity?
1. He was not a sidekick, he just hung around with them. All the heroes were wary of him because of his parents, the sidekicks were like, "yeah, they suck, you can hang with us." 2. The bullies hung around with a bigger bully, and remember, this is her SECOND time attending Sky High and she is STILL a villain. It is implied that the school is more to train the students on how to use their powers, not tell them what to be. Remember, in Save the Citizen, one group plays as the villains letting the citizen die, while the heroes try to save them, and the bullies always played as the villains. 3. Royal Pain might, as she is both of age, and has a previous history of criminal activity she may need to answer for, but that's never clarified. The others haven't really done anything other than some basic assault, kidnapping, and property damage, so they wouldn't be up for any crimes against humanity...yet.

The fact that Wonder Woman herself is the principal of a superhero high school makes me really happy. Also Sky High walked so Boku No Hero Academia could fly. Oh and RIP to Kelly Preston who played Mrs. Stronghold in this.
Nope. I disagree, I think the X-men franchise was a much bigger and more likely influence, I don’t think Sky High ever had that reach outside of the 2000s generation.
@@theperson8539 What's wrong with just saying "second-to last line"? We ain't writing essays. And. You do realize that Almight's costume LITERALLY looks like the dad's suit, right? And more specifically, they're both parodying X-Men specifically, so while sure, X-Men contributed, Sky High came before MHA with the same premise.
One thing I did appreciate about this movie is that, while it becomes a moot point, once Will’s parents know that he doesn’t have powers the two of them talk to each other over it. Will’s Dad realizes that, although disappointed, he doesn’t love his son any less. And as for the family business “He can always go into real-estate!”
The hilarious thing is that this movie came out in 2005 and the real estate bubble would have burst around the time he graduated meaning that he probably wouldn’t have been able to go into real estate either 😂.
Of course, he Did muse about his son falling into a vat of radioactive waste on the one in a million chance it might give him superpowers. (Or kill him.)
@@stickman019 actually. a real estate market crash is an ideal time to buy real estate. Buy low sell high. A lot of people are very wealthy now because they bought houses on the cheap during the financial crisis. But if they started buying before the dip then well yeah... that would have sucked
@@MelvinJoseFilmsSkyhigh was filmed at California State University. California was one of the states hit the hardest by the 2008 housing crash seeing a 50% decline in property values. This was good for new buyers but not for someone who holds a lot of real estate already. When the housing bubble burst home values plummeted and the agencies that were hit the hardest were the one that held vast amount of real estate as the amount of foreclosures made it difficult to capitalize on those investments. It is said in the movie that his parents are the most successful real estate agents in Maxville so, we can assume they hold a large amount of these properties which would sharply eat into their profits. Finally, the tumbling price of real estate would also mean lower barriers to entry would also increase competition as less capital would be required to enter the market. I was oversimplifying my first comment as it was meant to be taken as a joke but, there is a possibility that they were able to capitalize on the collapse. Since he would have graduated when the the initial shock happened, they might not know how widespread the effects would be and he could have been disillusioned from entering such a volatile market. It's just interesting that an off-handed comment in the movie was so impacted by a future event that shook the basis of our economy. It would be akin to someone in a late 90s movie saying “We’ll meet back here in the world trade center in 10 years.”
Sky High is genuinely one of the most fun DCOMS and deserves so much more love (and a sequel, if not two!) Fun fact: Two of the writers from Kim Possible worked on it, which probably explains why it holds up as well as it does today. Plus if I remember correctly, not only were they planning for a sequel, but they also were thinking about getting Layla and Warren together at the end (as we deserved!) I'm very much blanking on where this is from, but I know there was a lot buzz about it a few years ago. I just wish we got to learn more about this world and these kids - there were rumors of a sequel back in 2016, but obviously that didn't happen. Maybe one day...
It's not a DCOM. But there *was* a DCOM made in the early 2000s that had a similar premise about a teen with no powers and a superhero family. It was called Up, Up and Away.
An aspect I always love about this film is that, despite the fact it's live action, I feel this film is a great example/lesson in character design and how you should design them. all the character's outfits and designs reflect themselves and also hint at what their abilities are (I personally think great character design can tells you about the character/hint at what they can do). The glow kid wears mostly white, yellow and neon green which all reflect the idea of glowing/light (plus his fashion is meant to be flashy, key word "flashy) the melting kid wears all orange throughout the film which makes him look like a giant dreamsicle/popsicle which hints at his melting powers, the goth shapeshifter has a tie-die look to her clothes which style has a morphing quality to it, and will is dressed in red, white, and blue which makes him come off as the "all-american boy"/make him look similar to superman which he kind of is in terms of powers and role. Additionally, I love the humor when it comes to superheroes/tropes. the film's humor doesn't come off as just mocking the idea of superheros, it doesn't feel like them going "hah hah aren't these comic tropes just stupid and ridiculous" It honestly feel like the creators have a massive love of superheros and were just asking "hey what would daily life for a superhero be". The film really does explore that concept really well, aswell as the concept of a superhero school greatly & in cool ways. Like how will's dad just has dozens of phones in case he breaks one, how they made changing into their gym uniforms into an actual test (superheroes would need to learn to quickly change into their outfits) or how the gym class just has a car to drop on anyone with superstrength because one of the most famous comic cover's of all time is superman (one of the first superheroes) lifting a car.
No one ever talks about the camera angles/ frames all being sideways to give this film a darker tone. This film was nothing like anything I have ever seem and am so thankful it exists. This was Disney at their best!
10:38 The kid who plays Warren Peace in this movie later in life plays a lead in the movie The Covenant. It's a movie set on these four young adolescent males that are all the most recent generations of their families, and the people in each of their families possess innate magical abilities. These abilities grow in strength as they age, and their "True potential" is awakened on the eve of their eighteenth birthday. It's honestly a great watch, I think you should do a vid on it if it interests you.
I love the way Will and his friends redefine the meaning of "hero". It's not only about strength, powers and abilities, but also courage, kindness and wisdom.
After watching Scott Pilgrim for the first time a couple years ago and growing up with sky high when I first saw Ramona in sky high I was like what the hell is she doing here?
I will remember the “My girlfriend became my worst enemy, my worst enemy became my best friend, and my best friend became my girlfriend-but hey, that’s high school” line from the end of the movie till the day I die. 😝
@@Bingiisyaboi29 that's my thought, as much as I'd like sequels the original had a perfect ending and I'm worried the sequels wouldn't live up to expectations
I like to imagine after dating Will she realizes how emotionally immature he is for the kind of relationship she wants and calls it quits while still remaining friends cause they do have a close bond but not a romantic one. And as the years go by Waren and Layla have a slow burn but ultimately end up together!
Layla having nature powers in this movie, and then seeing Danielle Panabaker in the last season of The Flash having nature powers brought back precious childhood memories of mine.
I distinctly remember being really scared of the scene where people were being turned into babies, when I was a little kid. But other than that, watching it then and watching it now, it’s still such a great superhero movie. It’s really underrated if you ask me.
I never actually forgot about this movie. It's one of the few that stuck out to me because of how enjoyable it was and the characters didn't suck. The bus driver is legit the best character ever but... Lol so weird why the hell did he just wanna give his contact info to a kid?!?!
He gave his contact info to a kid because he was trying to get connections to heroes. And that kid is basically Superman's son. So it's like "hey uh...give my business card to your dad? You know, if he ever needs any help or anything." That's why. Or, considering the premise is that the kids will get powers, he was maybe banking on the kid becoming a hero later.
@11:35 if I’m not mistaken wills dad hugs him here and if you think about it it’s the first time wills dad could hug his son without restraint which is pretty touching
The way I got mad that you skipped over the scene with Warren and Plant girl at the restaurant. Yup. I still love this movie after all these many years. Thanks for another fun video, Alex.
Definitely not a b class film. And it was better than 80% off the stuff back then too. Or do u forget catwoman. Ben affleck daredevil. Electra. Judge dress etc

I've always wanted a sky high sequel where the sidekicks learn how to focus and super charge their powers. Maybe the glowing boy learns how to shine blindingly bright and focus light into hot lasers. The melting kid could trick a villain into drinking him then the melting boy controls the villains body from the inside.
The drinking one sounds like Aqua Necklace from Jojo's Bizzare Adventure; it almost kills the protagonist and his really overpowered friend before the adventure even started.
Unironically one of my favourite movies. Desperately needed a sequel. The guy that played Zach was hilarious and he and Warren needed to do a lot more in my opinion (I've seen the other things they've been in). The entire cast really was fire.
I really liked Sky High when it came out and I watched it enough to remember parts of it now. I specifically remember something about a class where they learned to quick change into their super outfits. Love it! I also remember immediately thinking "oh so this girl is poison ivy, she even has the hair for it - in a natural and not animated way." She refused to take the test and be ranked so at the end fight no one evil knew what her power was and as a kid I thought that was cool and wished she had a bigger part in it. After watching Alex talk about how Will didn't have to learn to accept himself at all it would have cool if Will had gotten a power that seemed hero level but was actually pretty useless in the end fight. Instead have poison ivy take the lead even though she was in the sidekick class the entire time - shock! - bc leading is something you can do without having an outwardly showing strength. Or it could have been one of the other sidekick kids that she had befriended and knew her power - that'd probably be better for the point but idk if Sky High had a character that would make sense in the roll. I don't remember, of the sidekick friends I remember the one dude glowed in the dark and that's about it. Anyway enjoyed as always. Did Warren and the girl who froze those guys at the beginning sort of get together at the end?
If I remember the movie correctly, Layla does end up being the driving force as she is the planner and tells everyone what to do. But yes they should have given such a better ending for Layla. Yes Warren and Ice Girl end up together at the end.
@@carn9507 They are still there to this day. 18 years later, they are still used as an example as to why you do not assault another classmate without knowing their powers.
I have to wonder, how did Will’s parents not know that he didn’t have super powers? Considering he was 14 years old, you’d think that by the time he became a teenager, they’d realize it.
@@StevenCenname Might be misremembering, but I think he also unscrewed the hinges of a door to make it look like he ripped it off. So basically, the kid was setting up stunts to trick the parents into thinking he had powers. And the parent's just never questioned or got suspicious because of COURSE their son was super, duh.
I know you say the plot could be better if the MC accepted himself for being a powerless sidekick, but I think the route they went also works. Someone goes from being an outsider to an insider and they're forced to accept that they're no better than those they left behind on the outside. Will left his old friends for a while (this was mostly because his classes changed), and needed to realize that they were there for him when back before he was socially accepted while his new friends only like him because he changed..
I agree with ninja here, this movie is good enough by itself. Everyone wants a sequel until it isn’t as good as the original then everyone can’t stop complaining.
I just realized something about Gwen/Susan, she became a villain because of how mistreated she was in high school, and becoming a baby she gets a second chance and seemingly just by getting contacts she’s able to become the most popular person in school. Do you really need to turn everyone into babies?
It has been forever since I have seen it but didn't they also say that being a technopath is now seen much more favorably while it was the thing of loser sidekicks in the past (I assume this is probably because there is a lot more tech stuff now than in the past).
@@mavortius8768 IIRC, she actually said that _they didn't even know what technopathy was,_ which would have labeled her as a no-power sidekick. Which is especially weird since the type of technopathy shown in the movie isn't the "telepathically connect to and control computers" kind that you can't see, it's the very visible "telekinetically assemble superscience gadgets" kind that should be very obvious in both when it's actively being used and the applications of its use.

From what I remember layla didnt want to fight crime in the traditional sense either. She wanted to give food away and stuff

Still, it's a problem often seen though. The OP characters are hella nerfed for the plot 😅
Perfuma, from She-Ra 😂
1. Why is Warren Peace a sidekick?
2. Why are the bullies helping the super villain when they're going to school to be heroes?
3. Will the bullies stand trial for treason against humanity?
1. He was not a sidekick, he just hung around with them. All the heroes were wary of him because of his parents, the sidekicks were like, "yeah, they suck, you can hang with us."
@@tmac8396 They were accomplices to a major crime. They definitely did much. Doesn't matter what part they played. A get away driver for a bank heist is just as guilty
@@TraceguyRune Please note that I did NOT say they did NOTHING, I said they didn't do much compared to Royal Pain and her Jester.

@@sunspotmill1291 up up and away was a much better story.
This movie had some good actors in it. Plus i liked this movie back then.

That song was actually a cover of an older song with the same name
15:12 I know right? I can’t count how many times a girl started dating me only to steal one of my gadgets from my secret lair.
Damn gadgetdiggers!
"This movie has no business being this good." The truest statement ever.😂
I really liked the last line in the movie "in the end my girlfriend became my enemy and my best friend became my girlfriend and my enemy became my best friend " I still laugh when I remember that
I was in college when this movie came out and my dad rented it to watch when I came home. I remember being like “Dad this is a teen movie!” Then I watched it and laughed more than my sister who was still in high school. Glad you liked it.
i actually love this movie, wasn't even long time since i've seen it. It's pretty enjoyable overal for what it is. And SURPRISINGLY spoilers ahead: the bully having this character development was such a treat, ugh that was well done. It didn't even go down the cheesy way, just a one on one convo like human beings would
It was handled maturely and realistically. Not that Disney would try to do this nowadays intentionally lol.
The barbell at 2:20 is 135 pounds....but also - he is trying to push it up over his FOREHEAD??? Not too smart
Pfffffff......had this on DVD as a father at 18, me and my son would sit in my recliner and watch sky high EVERY DAY. he loved it and it's all I had. 😂 good memories.
Bruh
Can't imagine being a parent at that age but it sounds like you tried and that's what really counts! I hope you and your kid have led a blessed life
I also love that the bullies are also opposite tropes, the fat one is fast and the skinny one has the rubber powers. I think it's neat.
I still wonder how their powers work with clothes. The stretchy guy's clothes grow with him, the cheerleader clones not just herself but her outfits as well, the guy who melts, also melts his clothes, and the shapeshifters can shapeshift their clothes as well 😆
Same explanation meta wise. You can’t be showing them naked, it’s not rated *sky high* enough to get away with that……….also you need to be an anime
Uhm
Magic ✨
But mostly bc the world of Sky High runs on comic book, road runner style logic and physics
Naruto is able to clone his clothes as well
I interpret it like Animorphs does. If you wear skintight clothing, it changes with you

ANIMORPHS WHOOO
I will throw hands. Sky High was on repeat in my house growing up. Still quote it to this day
I just rewatched Sky High and I loved it not just for nostalgia but the quality of the movie! You can tell they had a good time filming and the effects are actually thought out and confident
