I have a story. Saw Spy Kids 1 in theatres with my family when I was 7. By pure coincidence, my mom was wearing the same dress that day as their mom wears in the movie. For the rest of the night, my mom was insisting she's a spy, "typing" on her makeup pallette, etc. and I didn't know whether to believe her or not lol.

@@blackrex828first getting trapped in a game is not at all a new or original concept. Lots of movies/books have used it and saving damsel in distress is literally such a common trope for video games
Fun fact: Ricardo Montalban (Grandpa) in real life is in a wheelchair, so they had to build special rigs to have his chair move against the green screen as if he was walking.
Elijah Wood turning up for all of two minutes, and then getting quickly booted out, has stayed with me for the last twenty years. It's such a bizarre scene, yet insanely memorable!
He probably had a 30 minute lunch break when filming Lord of the Rings and went to the studio next door to film his two minute cameo for Spy Kids 3D. Plus, Elijah Wood previously worked with director Robert Rodriguez on the movie The Faculty. I guess Rodriguez had contacts with people he previously worked with like him, Steve Buscemi (who was in Desperado), Salma Hayek (who was also in Desperado) and George Clooney (who was in From Dusk Till Dawn) and just said “Hey! Wanna be in this silly, bizarre kids movie for a quick paycheck?”
one of my favorite parts of this movie: when the beta testers are shown in real life and they're like "I'm not smart" "I'm not strong" and "I'm not cool." it always threw me off as a kid because I was like "why is everyone else just themselves but these three got completely different personalities??" lol

Oh man, I always loved how deliberately campy and full of cheese these movies were. :) I could enjoy them, because it was very obvious that they were not taking themselves seriously at all. The big names in Hollywood probably agreed to be in it for some pure, low stakes fun. Like a vacation. :) This movie was fun. It was one of those that you could enjoy, throwing yourself into a cool yet cheesy videogame world without coming away from it with an existential crisis. Seeing kids movies like that now is rare. That's what makes the Spy Kids movies a gem. A weird, fever dream gem.
I unironically love the Spy Kids movies and Sharkboy and Lavagirl, not because they're some high art thinkpieces or masterpieces of cinema. They feel like a group of friends got together and said hey let's make some kids movies, and it's hard to hate that.
I distinctly remember being absolutely blown away by Sharkboy and Lavagirl as a kid. I didn't care about bad cgi at the time, why would I? What did matter to kid-me was that it was the first movie I'd ever scene that felt like someone had taken one of the stories I'd made up in my daydreams/games and turned it into an entire freaking movie! Spy Kids was awesome too, Spy Kids 2 was the best though, hands down.

I actually have a soft spot for this movie. Granted, it’s crazy, pointless, and totally unnecessary even as these movies go, but I can’t act like I wasn’t entertained. Maybe it’s because of the fact that I already didn’t take the Spy Kids movies that seriously. And seeing how they went all the way with this movie, I wasn’t that disappointed with the movie as everyone else was.
You should really watch some of the behind the scenes, because it turns out that hardly any of the actors were there at the same time. There was so many scheduling conflicts, that Antonio filmed everything by himself and others were paired off for the same reason. And the reason Grandpa looks janky, was because the actor is in a wheelchair irl, so they made a rig to fit the chair and lift him up and down so the actors could pretend he was standing and have an eye line. Wild stuff
@@JJ-tn4mp I know it isnt what you meant, but that comment was so funny to me. Like "WOW! A real life disabled person". Stupid as fuck but hilarious to sleep deprived me at 5am
I love how he keeps wondering about where the budget went, but then is also confused about how they have some of the craziest actors from Hollywood at the time by clearly, the budget went straight to the actors to promote the film, and almost none of it went into the CG, and somehow it still was popular so
There was this one scene in the movie where you meet the beta testers in the real world where they are revealed to be different than they were in the game. Like the cool kid was a nerd. I always thought that was a pretty cool touch for a kid’s film.
Yeah I'm surprised he didn't touch on that, thats totally the kinda scene he would joke about a ton. Same with him not mentioning Selena Gomez in the beginning!! I fr think he just didn't know it was her, bc there's no way he wouldn't give that at least a lil shoutout
Saw this in theaters and I thought it was really cool that it prompts you to put on the 3D glasses when Junie goes into the game, take them off when he gets out, and then out them back on when the game invades the real world.
it is very obvious the toy maker is conflicted, the multiple personalities are part of the game he made to help himself cope, (they aren't in his head) and him helping his enemies again and again when he literally has full control of the game is proof that he wants to be defeated and wants forgiveness
Grandpa's delivery on "Juni, this way, this is the way out!" is so Tommy Wiseau. It's like he heard that line and was like "this is how I want every line in my movie to sound!"
I think Ricardo Montalban recorded all of his scenes in front of a green screen having none of the other actors performances for reference, did one take of everything, and did it all sitting in a chair.
Spy kids is that nostalgia 'cool kids' vibe where I don't care how awful some of the composition is or how awful it looks in retrospective. It just puts a smile on my face for clearly being a kid/family movie😂 Also, Alex commenting adds to the fun 😁
Just wait till Alex realizes there already is a spy kids reboot: Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World with JESSICA ALBA and it CAME OUT IN 4D! Weirdest thing to see in theaters lol
They might look bad now being older, but the spy kids trilogy, and "Sharkboy and Lavagirl" will always have a special place in my heart bc they are my childhood.
Spy Kids 2 was even pretty weird to me as a kid, not that the effects looked bad but it was just a weird movie. Also, the trilogy was my childhood too and no matter how famous several of the actors are I can't help but think of them as being from Spy Kids lol.
It could just be calling in a favour or Rodriguez saying he may consider them for an adult project. It could be one of their friend's kids is in the film and so is just doing it for them,.
As far as the cgi I think it just made sense to us that the game world would look like that as kids. In other words its not that we thought the graphics looked "better" back then, its that our imaginations are just not as malleable as they used to be 😭
I can’t tell what’s funnier. The Elijah Wood cameo where he is hyped up only to die immediately, Sylvester Stallone having the time of his life with half a dozen zany characters, or the dark implication that Ricardo Montalban imprisoned the Toymaker in a computer back in the sixties.
My favorite part of this movie is during the race and the cool guy turns backwards and says “We’ll try to help you out as much as we can” as if he’s talking to Juni but Juni is so clearly in front of him. I actually can’t fathom what the intention was.
It's been years since I watched Spy Kids 3. I forgot how star-packed cast the Spy Kids films especially with Sylvester Stallone and Salma Hayek and even Elijah Wood. How did Robert Rodriguez get these actors?!?!? Also, this movie is only 80 minutes 😅 it felt like 90 minutes as a kid.
I think Robert Rodriguez has a lot of respect in the industry. One big reason that apparently he’s a really nice guy, and is really passionate about movie making. Apparently he was offered a bigger budget for spy kids 2 but actually chose to go with a smaller budget as he felt he was more creative with less money because it meant he was limited with ways in which he could make the process easier. It helps him think outside the box. It’s a big reason that the first Saw movie did so well, as James wan (and Leigh whanell) had such a small budget that they had to come up with creative ideas to make the movie work.
the OG spykids triolgy is the GOAT. on a budget, yes. still letting a kid imagine and dream, also yes. better then most the junk being shat out now days. also, remember this movie was made for 3d and let me tell you, as a kid who saw in the theaters at the time. it was and is the best 3d effects to EVER come out in a movie. the action literally came off the screen and floated in space. it was AMAZING and trumped every later 3d movie in the effects alone, sadly though, this only translated to the big screen with the high end equipment of the time.
I remember realizing how major the actors in these movies are and being so shocked they were in these kid movies, but then I got into the Rodriguez movies made before 2001 and realized he's just using actors from his past films. Selma makes sense when you see From Dusk Til Dawn. Steve makes sense when you watch Desperado. Elijah makes sense when you get into The Faculty, especially when you find out his cast mates encouraged him to audition for Frodo.
it may also be worth noting that the guy who plays the grandfather was also Khan Noonien-Singh in the original Star Trek series as well as The Wrath of Khan
There is actually a Spy Kids 4, which centers around new characters but brings back the old cast as adults. I’m just assuming at this point that I don’t remember much from that film, but it may be worth adding to your little list.
The only frustrating part is them NEVER explaining HOW the toy maker got grandpa in his wheelchair 😅 was it a brutal fight or something else? I have QUESTIONS !😣
Even as a kid I wanted to know what on earth happened but it’s so surface level it’s so frustrating this is never elaborated on and to be fair that would have probably made the ending less abrupt 😅
I think they alluded to them being spy partners back in the day and some kind of betrayal by the Toymaker led to grandpa accidentally being hurt by it in a sort of domino effect/collateral damage thing, and the Toymaker always regretted it I'm sorry I played that movie so many damn times back in the day, English, Spanish, captions on....most scratched disc in the house 😂😂 Oh also I believe the betrayal was motivated by the Toymaker being angry with the OSS, hence his line at the end of the movie saying he wanted to right the wrongs and get revenge for them "using" him on top of imprisoning him (likely for the event that cost grandpa his legs)
Fun fact i remember on the special features they "showed off" all of the green screen effects right down to the family lining up before gramps goes to face the Toymaker. That line up shot was 3 separate takes. At no point in the movie is anyone on screen in the same room at the same time. Most of the movie is single actors in a room, talking to no one, all stitched together in post. And let me tell you as a child it was freaking awesome.
This was the first Spy Kids movie I saw as a kid, so the references to the other movies and returning characters etc flew over my head, but I thought it was the COOLEST thing ever. This movie, along with Kim Possible, M.I.High and G-Force of all things, created a spy/secret agent obsessed monster. I would have this movie on loop while acting out my own stories dressed up in all my designated spy clothes. I still have the movie, but haven't watched it in years, so this was a very welcomed and fun reminder/throwback of those years. I also had the biggest crush on Carmen, though I was too young to fully understand what that meant/I had yet to realize I was queer, and so she was one of many female characters I thought was "really, really cool."
All of his kids' movies are passion projects because they are based on storylines Robert Rodriguez came up with his kids when they were young. They work because they capture themes like the magic of childhood and the unstoppable power of redemption. Like, have you noticed in all of his kids films that few, if any of his villains actually stay villains?
That's true. Floop was conflicted and went too far for his TV show, but realised he was wrong to kidnap agents purely for entertaining people on TV, so he worked with Carmen and Juni to undo the damage he had helped cause. He reprogrammed all the robots and sent them out to consistently work for good. The Toymaker realized he would rather let Grandpa Cortez come to meet him and face punishment despite his mental instability and emotional conflicts, and helped the players reach him in the end. Demetra was able to break free from her programming and help Juni and his team...well because she liked him I guess, I dunno Minus realized Max was right about destroying others' dreams being a poor choice to deal with his own crushed hopes, and helped undo the damage he'd caused by marking over the dream journal / control panel thingy.
The fact that not only Robert Rodriguez's Machete movies are set in the same universe as Spy Kids, but Danny Trejo plays the SAME character in both franchises is so weird to me.
16:26 oh hey it’s my favorite 60 seconds of my childhood! Frodo fucking strolls up, declares himself a badass, and immediately gets annihilated like a chump. I love it so much
That trilogy was a comfort thing for me and my little sister for so long. We used to watch it from beginning to end when we were sad or just for fun. The effects look dumb nowadays but back then it definitely was a thing xD
Seeing this is 3D theaters as an eight-year-old was such a ride, it felt equivalent to a trip to Disneyland 😅 I was so excited and looking back it’s hilarious
Okay but I vividly remember going to see this for my cousin's birthday back in '03... like we hyped it up all summer and walked away loving it!! Then going to Mcdonalds for our spy kids happy meals made it the perfect kid experience hahaha simpler times
Oh yea we look back at these 3d movies and they look awful but lord was spy kids 3 and sharkboy and lavagirl so fire when I first watched it. The graphics like someone else said were meant to look like the graphics of a video game and it did. Of course nowadays the graphics of games are supreme in comparison but back then it looked amazing.
I'm still 100% sure all of that budget was used on the actors... I mean, having george clooney, antonio banderas, sylvester stallone, elijah wood and selma hayek all in the same movie? iconic.
My favorite "2 truths and a lie" truth is that the first Sylvester Stalone movie I saw was Spy Kids 3. The number of people who go "What? No.... wait really?" Is hysterical
This was the first 3D movie I saw in the theaters, and it's nice that it was kind of what brought 3D films back. I even had a dvd of this that came with glasses lol.
Man, I had that DVD and I remember feeling so cool putting the glasses on at the end when all the rest of the cast put theirs on 😂 I swear that disc got so many scratches lol, very well used DVD
This movie has amazing actors because it was stacked with a bunch of Hispanic!/Latino actors. It was being a kids/family series of movies that also had minorities as the leads. Something Disney just shoehorns in to their movies, but spy kids did it way before them and made it feel natural. The small budget is also why a lot of it was filmed in green screens, the behind the scenes of how they did the shots is really interesting.
i mean it's also just Robert Rodriguez asking for his friends to be part of a passion project meaning it's way more chill and for fun than serious buisness. a lot of these stars are taking home smaller paycheck than they usually would even for just a cameo. i don't get why people look so down on these movies. yes they are stupid they are intentioally stupid for the jokes. and it's jokes that work for kids who as it happens are the audience.
LMAOOO. I love this breakdown of this movie that I used to just think was the COOLEST thing ever. Now as an adult, I'm just like, "Wow, this is the CHEESIEST/Campiest stuff I've seen in a hot minute... And I love it."
Honestly when I watched it, I loved the family aspect that anyone could be your family . It was so inspirational for me and helped me get along with those around me. Even after all these years it makes me happy to watch this again.
Elijah Wood in this, Brad Pitt in Deadpool 2, etc I love the comepletely random and completely pointless cameos in these films 🤣 Edit : Also, love how Alex completely glosses over the whole *"we have to drown several children",* to focus on how the OSS can control the game 🤣
15:55 Probably just used as an excuse, but do keep in mind that Juni and Carmen were put into anti gravity chambers, so them physically running like that makes at least some logical sense.
Fun fact: Robert Rodriguez is good friends with Quentin Tarantino and worked with him on other films. Probably why he has access to so many big name actors.
The Elijah Woods cameo is the only part of this movie that I still find funny as an adult. Also, fun fact: There's a channel called DinksterDaily that uploads the same clip of Bill Paxton saying "Did somebody ring the Dinkster?" every single day, without fail. They've been at it for *seven years.* They're currently up to 2,758 uploads.
Kids movies are expensive to produce, they normally take twice the time to shoot because Kids can only legally work an 8 hour day including Lunch and schooling during that time as well. Your typical camera day is 12-14 hours but with kids it becomes much smaller meaning more of the budget has to go to crew costs as the production time is stretched out, adding more days to the shooting schedule
The fact that the actor that plays Junie married Megan trainer and the actress that played Carmen married Carlos from Big Time Rush is the best thing ever
Conspiracy theory: Each year someone downgrades the CGI of all of these movies. No way when I was small the CGI looked this bad, surely there's some mischief going on. Ps: the in game CGI makes sense tho, taking into consideration it was actually a videogame (so having photorealistic CGI doesn't quite make sense) on its beta.

😂😂 that's such a cool mom you have!! It would have been hilarious if she was like "Ya know, ginger_nspice sweetie, this movie is actually based off my time with the OSS before transferring to the CIA. I also killed so many people...but our secret, kay?" 😅

Your mom sounds awesome omg!! 😂
20 years?? Holy shit!! Boy, did they push the 3-D, didn't they? The spy kids' movies were fun, though. I will say that the ending of the movie was great. Everyone, including the villains, came to get together to defeat the robot. It was so ridiculous! But good at the same time.

Fun fact: Ricardo Montalban (Grandpa) in real life is in a wheelchair, so they had to build special rigs to have his chair move against the green screen as if he was walking.
sadly died in '09 at the age of 88
Elijah Wood turning up for all of two minutes, and then getting quickly booted out, has stayed with me for the last twenty years. It's such a bizarre scene, yet insanely memorable!
Mordor really changed Frodo 💀
Reminds me of Brad Pitt's cameo as Vanisher in the first Deadpool movie. He's on screen for like all of five frames.
And there’s the fact that they foreshadow the whole ‘saying oops takes you back to 0’ thing 😂
He was the guy
one of my favorite parts of this movie: when the beta testers are shown in real life and they're like "I'm not smart" "I'm not strong" and "I'm not cool." it always threw me off as a kid because I was like "why is everyone else just themselves but these three got completely different personalities??" lol
I always assumed it was that they used their virtual selves to be the people they wished they were, rather than what they were actually like. It's wish fulfillment
"I'm not smart"

Oh man, I always loved how deliberately campy and full of cheese these movies were. :) I could enjoy them, because it was very obvious that they were not taking themselves seriously at all. The big names in Hollywood probably agreed to be in it for some pure, low stakes fun. Like a vacation. :)
This movie was fun.

Wild stuff
Having a real disabled actor is pretty cool though.

I love this movie because it feels like it was written by kids, it’s completely incoherent and it’s great
Saw this in theaters and I thought it was really cool that it prompts you to put on the 3D glasses when Junie goes into the game, take them off when he gets out, and then out them back on when the game invades the real world.
it is very obvious the toy maker is conflicted, the multiple personalities are part of the game he made to help himself cope, (they aren't in his head) and him helping his enemies again and again when he literally has full control of the game is proof that he wants to be defeated and wants forgiveness

18:02. Okay. That awkward like delivery is literally the funniest thing in this movie
I remember watching this as a kid and being so traumatized by Dimitra's "death" that I couldn't finish the movie

My headcanon is that they were in an accident and he left him there without medical attention (maybe to save himself?)
Even as a kid I wanted to know what on earth happened but it’s so surface level it’s so frustrating this is never elaborated on and to be fair that would have probably made the ending less abrupt 😅
@@smnbrgssnot likely to address it because the guy who played the grandpa died a few years ago (probably after this 3rd movie)
I think they alluded to them being spy partners back in the day and some kind of betrayal by the Toymaker led to grandpa accidentally being hurt by it in a sort of domino effect/collateral damage thing, and the Toymaker always regretted it
I'm sorry I played that movie so many damn times back in the day, English, Spanish, captions on....most scratched disc in the house 😂😂
Oh also I believe the betrayal was motivated by the Toymaker being angry with the OSS, hence his line at the end of the movie saying he wanted to right the wrongs and get revenge for them "using" him on top of imprisoning him (likely for the event that cost grandpa his legs)
There's too many dead actors in that family montage. I kinda teared up a little bit. And thank you for not ruining it with an obvious Vin Diesel clip.

That line up shot was 3 separate takes. At no point in the movie is anyone on screen in the same room at the same time. Most of the movie is single actors in a room, talking to no one, all stitched together in post. And let me tell you as a child it was freaking awesome.

14:20 Come on Alex! That introduction is incredible! Since that moment I had a crush on Carmen
Demetra was able to break free from her programming and help Juni and his team...well because she liked him I guess, I dunno
Minus realized Max was right about destroying others' dreams being a poor choice to deal with his own crushed hopes, and helped undo the damage he'd caused by marking over the dream journal / control panel thingy.
The fact that not only Robert Rodriguez's Machete movies are set in the same universe as Spy Kids, but Danny Trejo plays the SAME character in both franchises is so weird to me.

I saw this in the theaters at age 8 and it changed my life.
That's part of why I loved it as a kid, I was like hey they're Latino, so are we!! I could be a spy clearly 😂
i mean it's also just Robert Rodriguez asking for his friends to be part of a passion project meaning it's way more chill and for fun than serious buisness. a lot of these stars are taking home smaller paycheck than they usually would even for just a cameo.
i don't get why people look so down on these movies. yes they are stupid they are intentioally stupid for the jokes. and it's jokes that work for kids who as it happens are the audience.
the budget definitely all went to the cast and it is amazing

15:55 Probably just used as an excuse, but do keep in mind that Juni and Carmen were put into anti gravity chambers, so them physically running like that makes at least some logical sense.
Damn, never realised how stacked the casting was in these films.
I remember watching this in the theaters as a kid & being genuinely excited because the 3-D & how colorful everything was 😅
Fun fact: Robert Rodriguez is good friends with Quentin Tarantino and worked with him on other films.
Bro that is so funny. How did you even find that channel? Lmao
