    When I decided to remove processed sugars from my diet, I replaced them with something healthy for a treat. When I crave something rich and sweet, I will eat some organic banana with some organic peanut butter and I feel content with that. The ingredients on the peanut butter are organic peanuts, and sea salt.

      I just had something really yummy. Unsweetened almond milk with a frozen banana with a scoop or whatever of carob powder. Absolutely delicious thick just like a milkshake......no sugar....

    It's strange that so many videos that give advice on quitting sugar are filled with clips of people eating frosted cakes. I found the same with videos on quitting smoking showing lots of people smoking. Surely imagery of happy, people full of vitality engaging in healthy activities and eating colourful, healthy food would be more motivating.

      It’s Br-roll used to change the shot every now and then. Or to emphasise the point spoken at the time. It’s normal for videos to have these sorts of clips in. Documentaries also do this too

      I can see what you mean, but if you notice there are many unhappy people in this video eating because they're obviously bored /unhappy/unfulfilled and that really got to me. I think Karli used this imagery in an appropriate way, more making it look like garbage instead. Kind of like exposing the lie? Not sure if that makes sense😅

    I used to need chocolate daily. Then I became whole food plant based because of some health issues (so similar to you…celiac, skin etc), and my life changed. SOSFree and I loooooove the freedom from compulsion. I do not crave sugar in the least. I haven’t had chocolate in over a decade and I truly feel no deprecation. Sweet potatoes and fruit and winter squash are super sweet and satisfying time now. I also use them to sweeten my baked goods for my whole family. Been eating this way for fourteen years and am finally starting to share some videos about how we make this work for our family. It can so simple and sustainable.

      How long was it before you didn't crave the chocolate or chips? Also, do you honestly never feel the urge to have just one when at a party or when donuts are brought to the office?

      @@SheilaMiller-n6mI genuinely don’t. Not eating sugar and chocolate at all is the absolute key for me. I’m sure that if I ate even a bit, I would crave it incessantly. I do recall that, I frequently made myself oatmeal cooked with one frozen banana and 1 tbsp of unsweetened cocoa powder, and then cooled with frozen blueberries and it totally satisfied any cravings. There is a recipe on my channel (my channel is keeping it simple. If you search for that and “sweet potato”, you should find me.)
      Another key for me is making absolutely sure I am eating to complete satisfaction with whole, wet starches. I eat a lot of whole fruits, veggies, and starches to keep my hunger satisfied.
      Moderation, for me, never worked. As much as I wish I could be that type of person.

    I’m going on 72 and have had sugar craving most all my life. There have been times when i quit sugar, but why water is different and goes right to hydration vs drinking something with calories that has to go through digestion is something I’ve never heard before. I think this will help me just drink water. 👍

      I had a friend that was obese and was not at all an overeater, but she was addicted to Coke’s and drank at least a six pack a day. She stopped and the weight fell off.

    Thank you very much for all the information, I am a sugar addict like my father, he would have packets of lollies in his bedroom cupboard but he would have terrible rages when he wasn’t able to get his fix which was very scary. My addiction is affecting my health so thank you again for the information

    One of the thought processes I became aware of this holiday season is this, "If I eat it all now, then it won't be here to tempt me later." So irrational especially when I get so high when I eat ALL of it and then crash so hard that I HAVE TO GET MORE NOW! Gee whiz, Lord help me!

    I ❤sugar - been paying way more attention to it. I still have an extreme need for something sweet after dinner but don’t crave it as much on the morning like I use to. Hearing this video really reminds me of this item in my diet being a “problem”, thank you!

      @@Emiliah1996 Maybe you should try sweet breakfast, like oats or semolina/gritz with peanut butter and a lot of sweet fruits on top (banana, strawberry, pears etc.).

      I crave fresh fruit sometimes after meals but it’s not overpowering like sugar cravings get. And no, watching others eat that stuff is aversive to me. Great questions!

    When I wake up in the morning that bad dry taste in my mouth makes me want to eat something cold and sugary or drink something like an ice cold soda 😂

      If you tape your mouth shut when you sleep you won’t breathe through it, and thus, you won’t get that morning breath. I know it sounds crazy but it’s really good for dental health and sleep apnea.

    Step one, we admitted we were powerless over food/ sugar and our lives had became unmanageable.
    Step two, believed a power greater than ourselves could restore us back to sanity.
    Step 3 became willing to turn our lives over to the care of God as we understand him.

    This is exactly me rn. Deep depression, itchy legs/body. I know I’m a sugar addict and have been my entire life. Sugar is ruining my mental health, teeth, and overall well being. I literally feel crazy and it makes me so angry how socially acceptable sugar is.

      What really drives me crazy is how people can't wait for their innocent child to hit their first birthday and put a big cake in front of them. Yes, I'm sure they've had junk food before, but it's a little more depressing to see that first birthday celebrated with just about the most addictive/deadly substance of all!! Makes me sad. :(

    I used to have ferocious sugar cravings and found it nearly impossible to go w/o sugar, if I passed sugary sweets in the break room they stayed on my mind , always chose the most frosted piece of cake, etc. Over a year ago I started taking berberine (500mg w/ each meal) and it changed my taste preferences. I even found it hard to eat such sugary foods, the taste was no longer appealing, a bit revolting. It took about a week but it happened.

    I relate sooooo much to being addicted to sugar as a kid. As a child I had emotional pain and I think sugar was my dopamine hit. It soothed me.

    I stopped eating sugar and processed foods 4 months ago now. It’s incredible what’s happened to my body. At the age of 49 my body has been transformed. Was 96kg and now am 72kg. Eating home made food, and nature’s natural sugar. So eating a lot of apples especially. Once to begin the journey, you truly have no desire to put any sugar, processed factory made foods. Along with the sugar they add a lot of Trans vegetables oils!!! Both Poison!!!! 🙌🙌🌗💜 x

    ❤I am 7 days sugar free ( junk food free!). I am using Xs on my calendar. This really is inspirational. I gave up Diet Coke last year at this time. I only drink water. So, I am adding another layer!

    Great video! The first step I took when I quit sugar was to empty my home, office and car of all sugared and sugary foods and wrappers. It’s hard to do this because you spent a lot of money on them. But take heart in the fact that you won’t be spending any money on them again. I quit in 2012. It has brought me joy!

    I’ve struggled with chronic pain & neuropathy for 14 years. I’m 46 now! Used to take Oxy for the pain! Was fit, trim & managing pain. When I detoxed off of Oxy 5 years ago, I traded it for Sugar addiction! A Secondary Addiction! Gained 80 lbs, clinical depression & in the worst shape of my life! Was even told by my pain doctor to file for disability! I can’t accept that! I’m too young! I feel like giving up sugar will help me get fit & less depression! I’m desperate to get fit & pain free. I’ve heard sugar is making pain & depression worse! Giving sugar up will help me immensely! I just know it! Trying to learn how to do it! 🤓 Thanks for your video! I will implement these 5 steps and keep you up to date on my progress!

      It’s so hard. I’m 50. I would not say I’m addicted to sugar. I can talk myself out of it sometimes. But can I say “I’m never going to have cake again for the rest of my life? Or a bag of M&Ms?” I just can’t see it happening.

    I dumped out my sugar, threw away anything that I could possibly get a sweet high off of, and quit diet soda all at once... am on day 3 of this and want to die. I feel so bad. Headaches, sluggish, can't sleep at night, depressed... it's so fun. Hope in a day or two I feel better.

    Talking about being an addict in the beginning. It's actually true. Sugar is just as addictive as opioids on the brain. There is a 12-step program called overeaters anonymous which helps address that part. Sometimes we have to find out the why behind it.... It could be physical. Could be mental, could be trauma. I believe it's all. I'm currently being treated for candida overgrowth. Glad I found this video.

    Updating Your Reward System. Great point! I used to eat a sugary food to make me feel better whenever agitated. It led to worse behaviors. Now I exercise daily and am fighting to repair all the horrible impairments that I caused, including cognitive impairments.

    For decades I was hooked on sugar but also salt (ready salted crisps/chips, family size, 3 bags a day) and refined flour (pastries, 3 pizzas a day). I had no idea about how extreme your food addiction was too, Karli, so I'm even more impressed with what you've achieved, your discipline in sticking to a WFPB way of eating and the positive, effective way in which you help people (also very impressed with the healthy way you raise your gorgeous daughter). It's so important to find something you love about yourself (creativity, kindness, love of nature and animals) and believe that you deserve better, you deserve to be healthy and free from addiction. I too became addicted to junk food in childhood and I alternated between bingeing and extreme dieting from age 12 to age 54, I was suicidal and depressed, agoraphobic, out of work. What actually saved me was being in lockdown because I could only order food online and I simply stopped ordering junk and only bought salads, fruits and veggies, falafel and hummus, there was simply no more junk in the house so I gradually weaned myself off junk food and lost weight immediately. For some reason a RUclips video about WFPB eating popped into my recommended videos and this time I listened and acted on it. I've now been WFPB oil & sugar-free for 3 years, slim and maintaining my slim weight for the first time in my life. Still working on reducing salt but I've just done all my blood tests and everything's fine, I'm no longer pre-diabetic and I make sure I always tell my doctor and my dentist that the reason why I'm so well now is that I'm WFPB.       Do you ever drink red wine? Through the years I have given up most alcoholic beverages; however, I do like a beer with the rare occasion I have pizza and I enjoy a glass of red wine sometimes with dinner.

      Special occasion drinks and treats enhance our experience for some. If you enjoy them, great! Personally- with my autoimmune complications and my obvious predisposition to being a sugar addict, I just prefer to refrain from drinking and sweets. But who knows, maybe things will change for me some day.

    I use a trick from a friend of mine. I put a sweet in my mouth, taste it then decide it’s not worth swallowing it and spit it out to save myself from the sugar repercussions.

      I used to do that. Alot of movie stars do that, Dolly Parton is one. She chews the food, spits it out. It's how she stays slim

    I never heard about water being absorbed without digestion! Makes sense why many in the Keto Vloggers Cmmty (especially carnivores) will say to drink your water like an hour after you eat your meat so your stomach acid can be effective in digesting process.

    I threw out a half box of biscuits after Christmas so I couldn't eat them. If the sweet thing is not in the house I can't eat it. My family were not very happy initially.

    I have done very well with changing my food to natural, whole foods low carb, doing various fasting routines and avoiding most seed oils.
    But the sugar addiction! I still crave it almost every day, and certainly end up taking too many, "oops," days. My brother doesnt have a his problem and he made the same changes as me (by the way we both reversed prediabetes, lost 40+ pounds, almost never get sick, inflammation doesn't destroy our lives, etc). My son can have a bag of candy and still have it 6 months later, when it is dry snd ild and then he throws it away. He's twelve!!! He's my hero 😂

    I would add, find replacements for your sugary favourites. Greek yogurt and berries, protein chips, Dark chocolate dipped in natural pb

    47 year old sugar junkie here. Chronic pain, headaches and heavier than I’ve ever been. Does quitting sugar mean not eating fruits, condiments and breads etc? Can someone “quit” sugar and still eat fruit etc. or does quitting sugar mean going full keto? Any help or advice is appreciated.

    You need to be honest about fruit sugar . Its still sugar. In the past fruit was seasonal where as now its available all year . Sweeter varieties have been developed in comparison to what our ancestors ate .

      In my practice, fruit sugar has only been an issue for clients when the sugar has been extracted from the fruit. But eating the fruit whole hasn't led to craving, distress, etc. And on the flip side- whole fruit is very health-promoting. But if fruit is triggering for you- by all means, do what you feel is best for your body. Thanks for commenting

    As a pre-diabetic and surrounded by it at work daily, for me, the only items that worked are: Metformin (curbed appetite and needed it for my blood sugar issues), light daily exercise, and an SSRI. For some reason the SSRI helped me to curb food cravings in general.

      It's literally impossible to NOT think about it when part of your life involves eating.... therefore, shopping. I go to the store and there it is in practically ALL the aisles.....chips, cakes, cookies, pop, candy, ice cream, etc., etc. UGH...

    Thanks for the video. As a person who tried a vegan diet for a while l can say that the scariest thing about quitting sugar is that these things are actually lifestyle changes. We need to realize that major dietary changes may mean that we can no longer eat at most restaurants, eat most food served at events or parties, cafeterias, etc. This makes it especially hard for children who are exposed to these foods when they're away from you. So the real question becomes, "Are you willing to change your lifestyle?"

    Hi Naturally Karli so I have a question about my story so two week I have gotten my blood test and some of my result were really high better than others so the apart of that your story similar than mine so I can I stay away from sugar cravings at work and at home because I work at a restaurant called Chick-Fil-A and so I only have three dessert left should I only eat one of them on weekends or should I just keep them and order for me to eat something healthy sugar like fruits and vegetables until then? My doctor said that exact same thing as well. Please let me know if you want to talk to me about it and I am open up to anything that you might throw out there for me?

      Are you eating more bread or pasta after giving up the sweets? I went through tgat when I gave up sweets. I only lost 3 pounds when I quit sweets but I ate cranberry great & or pumpkin bread ir banana bread

    Get sugar out of the house. I have stopped baking. I cut carbs way back, only use Evoo, Coconut oil and Avocado oil. Eat more fiber to feel full.

    Since childhood I've suffered from chronic hives/angioedema. I quit alcohol almost 2 years ago and was flare free for one year. However, I'm flaring again and I feel sugar is the issue because I go through periods where I binge on sugar :(

    Thank you for this video. I am a sugar addict and I don't want to continue to live this way. I've been improving my diet over the last couple of years, but still have a long way to go. I was diagnosed with celiac a couple of years ago, and being forced to read labels has helped me face the reality of highly processed foods. But sugar --- ah sugar! (Gluten-free Oreos.) I am listening to you and thinking about motivations, rewards and non-rewards. I just got out a physical calendar to start marking days off. Thank you.

    I found this video very helpful. I was also raised on sugar. The difference is that I'm now 62 and and in the last few years, this sugar based lifestyle has caught up to me. I have a lot of the issues you've mentioned, mostly just feeling like garbage all the time. Five days ago, I decided to try to give up sugar, and experienced a lot of withdrawal symptoms, dizziness, irritability and depression. Yesterday, I gave in and ate a fair amount of sugar, but I am not giving up. I do need to remind myself of the reasons I'm doing this. To be able to feel better, have better looking skin, to not feel like garbage at the end of the day, to be able to have some long lasting energy would be great! Do you have ay tips for helping the withdrawal symptoms ? Is it better to quit cold turkey or wean off of sugar? I'm trying to think of sugar as poison, so I think I just answered my now question! Would I wean myself off of poison? No.
    But thank you for this video, it's nice to know there are others out there working on this too!

    I’ve been eating healthy for two months and I feel like I’ve finally kicked the sugar habit. I still have dark chocolate once or twice a week, and milk chocolate maybe once every other week. Ten years ago, if I had a small bowl of ice cream, my irrational part of the brain would think that I’ve thrown all my hard work down the drain. I’m so happy that isn’t the case for me anymore. I just recently discovered that I had orthorexia at the time

    If your goal is to stay hydrated, plain water is an excellent choice. But if you find it more enjoyable to drink flavored water or infused water, you can do so while still reaping the hydrating benefits

      I encourage people who are tormented by sweets to refrain from any concentrated sweetener. Stevia is not going to improve your health or nourish you, but if you’re already healthy- it’s not a deal breaker. Hope that helps

      I have used stevia for decades. Yet, it's from a natural plant and the powder was green. Now it's white because it's bleached! I don't want bleach in my body! I usually use liquid stevia, which comes in various flavors as well..

    And what did sugar do for me. I have type 2 diabetes and neurological neuropathy. I have to be careful what I consume. I used to be 350 pounds 5 foot 8 inches but now now weigh 229 thanks to keto carnivore lifestyle. I have one bad habit that Saturday donut for breakfast. I need to give this up!

    I didn’t mind the backstory, and the tips seem really good. My question is this: I see so many of these types of videos, and the person telling us they had this severe sugar addiction is slim and trim. Most of us with a severe sugar addiction also have extra weight. so then I start questioning the veracity of the backstory. But it certainly could be somebody’s backstory… And maybe not everybody gains weight while eating that much sugar. But wow, I would say that’s an unusual metabolism.

      Great question! Keep in mind it has been nearly 9 years since I was a sugar fiend. Secondly, if you watch some of my other videos you will see I also have a tendency to over exercise. When I was eating loads of candy and other sweets, it was difficult to maintain a healthy weight.

    I have been to three dietitians. Asking pledging for their help with this. Seems with pcos and Hashimoto I can’t get over the cravings. Than come to find out I have Sibo .     How do I avoid sugar if I have no willpower and my husband constantly brings sugary snacks and junk food home? He claims that is the only way he won’t lose too much weight. I ask him to help me by eating healthier food, but the bad foods keep coming into the house and he eats them in front of me all the time.

    I find once you get past the first couple of weeks, not gonna lie if you’re a sugar addict the withdrawal is going to be rough. Once you’re past that though you are laughing, you feel fantastic and you stop having any interest in the sweet stuff. That’s how it was for me anyway.

      The length of time varies for everyone but the symptoms usually subside after the first week. Try a 10-13 minute meditation. Those are really effective for eliminating headaches

Without that, you’d just be another neutral talking head trying to get us to buy, click, subscribe. So thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your challenges. I start my quitting sugar tomorrow, cold turkey. I have fasting and ketones from fasting to get me through to day 3 and no more cravings. Have to do this for my health. Skin especially. I have plaque psoriasis.

    It is a reward thing, a transition thing.
    But it can cause me to be spacy, and I have dental problems.

    Great video. Thank you. I used the calendar system before and I was thinking of using it again, so this has encouraged me. It worked pretty well for me . However, I must admit I abandoned it when first my mother died and then my Dad. Whenever I am stressed I do reach out for chocolate and my anxiety and feelings of sadness understandably was pretty extreme during that period.

      @@NaturallyKarli Thank you. I usually get the cravings when I am at work, or just when I get back from it. Drinking tea helps when I am at work and drawing seems to help when I get back from work. I find drawing very helpful and from what I hear has a similar effect as meditation.
