This song is pure soul and emotion, and this version with Rich's fret work and string bending is sublime. But I still love the studio duet version with his son Teddy. ;)
I love the purity of Thompsons playing. Doesn’t always pay off (1:33) but within seconds it’s glorious (1:37) and the solo is incredible. We must appreciate him while we can
During this lockdown, I have been listening to even more music: my whole library is on shuffle for most waking hours. What popped up? Maria McKee's "Breathe": but it was the sound of the guitar I heard from another room that made me tear to the machine and hit REPLAY. I think Maria is/was wonderful, but the sound of Richard Thompson is the standout element of the recorded song. He is not only a genius, but has that ability to make 6 strings and a hunk of wood produce a sound that is uniquely HIS. Does anyone have the Maria McKee / Richard Thompson performance on the Jools Holland show, which I remember from so many years ago? Please?!
Thats because he sings it much slower and takes his time to savor the words. Tim is playing Kiwi style where we change it as we feel it. It's not wrong or forgetting. Also singing harmonies when you usually lead is harder to do.
@@carlhamilton8531 dude go listen to Tim singing it on his own and then how Richard sings it with his son who he obviously has more experience of singing with. He didn't forget the lyrics he wasn't sure where Tim was going with his adlib
@@jaymieindigo-blue4203 So, they hadn't rehearsed the song or he didn't know what verse Tim was going to sing or he wasn't sure where Tim was going with his adlib? Dude, you must be insane. You are so wrong and talking a load of crap. Get real. He forgot the words.
As much as I love Tim Finn and Richard Thompson (and knowing full well who wrote the song) I find the combination of Tim’s acoustic Guitar and singing and Richards Nashville bends and licks, somehow don’t complement each other.
One of my very fave songs of all time.
Two of the world's greatest songwriters in the world. As Tim reflects back on his romance with Greta.
Love Richard Thompson!

Me too, the duet with Teddy is better. Usually I give the original artist the nod, but not in this case.
Their father-son live version together is great too. Teddy's voice is so strong and beautiful. I love Neil Finn, but this isn't nearly as good.
Father snd son. Streets ahead version.
@@angela8608this is Tim Finn
Fabulous playing from RT as always.
Great duo.
Thank you !
One of the best songs ever written, and there are many songs out there! :)
#OdedFriedGaon #OdedMusic #Audioded
great performance, soulful vocals from Tim Finn and lovely guitar accompaniment from Richard Thompson
Beautiful. The combination of Kiwi and Scottish accents is so complimentary.
Like that Māori strum so much.
RT has 50% Scottish ancestry bit his accent is 100% North London

I appreciate that Tim Finn wrote this song, but Richard Thompson (and Teddy T) just nail it. This pales beside their interpretation.
So who wrote what? Richard T wrote the music and Tim Finn the words was it?
Correct.
Teddy and Richard's live performance of this makes of it a much better song. This version does not have the charm of theirs.
I love Richard Thompson but this was not a great performance as he almost forgot the words in the chorus
