He didn't we this song, but puts it right in the middle of all his shows to open everyone's heart...Tim Flynn, who did the original vesrion that influenced this, didn't write t either, but it's a too-little-known classic...I imagine uilleann pipes and ney/duduk playing the guitar lines...
@@Beshara1111 Richard Tmopson did write this song. He wrote the melody as part of the soundtrack for an Australian film. The film didn’t do well but Tim Finn heard the music and wrote the words to suit part of it. Richard got wind of it and they collaborated on a live performance for Jools Holland on TV. Their combination has proven a well loved success
Ha! I wish I was the artist! I love this performance by the father & son ( Richard & Teddy Thompson) and put this video(corny as it is) together back in 07 in the hopes of getting others to listen to this great song and appreciate their tremendous musical talent. Still one of my favorite performances..
I still cannot understand how this song is not a standard, it has to be one of the most emotionally honest songs I know of. Plus it's also just a real great song with a great melody line.
A song to drive by. Time and anxiety fly away and you float along. Such exquisite lyrics and a gorgeous rendition by a Father and his Son. Such a blessing to sing with your child. Thank you for sharing.
I have listened to this countless times and every time I'm intent on listening to every lyric but before I know it I'm in a blissful world of my own and this is the soundtrack.
Thanks. I came to Richard via Teddy, who has to be one of the most underrated singer-songwriters around. Great songwriter and his voice is spectacular. Also, really good, fun performer. The NY TImes did a piece on him a few years back and I thought it was sign he on his way but he's still slow burn. Maybe he's for discerning tastes only.
My favorite version of this is the live take with RT & Teddy on Celtschmerz (possibly the finest RT live album, available only from his web site); but this comes pretty close. I saw them do this live at the Buskirk in Bloomington, IN and it was mesmerizing. If RT comes to your town, go see him!
brilliant thanks for uploading, i love your video! i've seen them both loads of times but never together, this really is a double act of a song, richard brings all the character and story, but no doubt, teddy is the voice, when he opens his mouth to sing it's a perfect countrified tenor, amazing to listen to
I enjoy Teddy's voice more each time I hear it! I very recently "found" this song -- I hadn't realized he sung on it too (and I don't know Richard's music at all.) Somehow I listened to it -- it was auto-generated by RUclips for me and playing in the background -- then I recognized Teddy's voice the moment he began to sing verse two. Beautiful. I first learned of Teddy Thompson in the Transatlantic Sessions, where he's playing music with several other musician favorites of mine. I don't think it's just me, I think there's something special about Teddy's voice. I can hear his command over how he releases the air from his lungs as he sings and I love it when he lets it all go, in a perfectly relaxed but controlled way. Some singers sound best when they're relaxed and I bet it was great for him to sing a duet with his dad. Wouldn't surprise me to find recordings of him performing with his mom, too. TT played guitar and sang in Rufus Wainwright's band. An American, also with musician parents; who happened to do better in Europe than here. I bet Teddy and Rufus knew of each other for ages before joining forces.
@@EchosLens They were childhood friends, Rufus wrote a song about Teddy called Nobody's Off The Hook. The close connections between the three families, the Thompsons Wainwrights and McGarrigles are very interesting, especially when it's the 'children' telling the stories. No matter which one of them is telling the story the thread is always that the 'elders' are far more childish and immature and neurotic than their kids and are really competitive with them. Rufus explains how he never heard Joni Mitchell growing up and only discovered her as an adult because 'Mom wouldn't allow Joni's music to be played in the house because she was jealous of her and bitter about her success'. Teddy recounts Richard being difficult to work with even though all he was asking him to do was play some guitar on his album. I must check out the Transatlantic Sessions, thank you for the tip-off.
@@speakertreatz Interesting -- thank you for filling in the picture some more! I've heard the McGarrigles I think -- I'm not a hundred percent sure, but if I have it would probably be from the Transatlantic Sessions. I'll check out the McGarrigles and see if I can spot the neurotic ones. It cracks me up that it's the parents. I'm sure it wasn't an easy life.
To have a gift, as Richard surely does, must be deeply satisfying: to then share it with others as he does whenever he plays, even more so. Then to know you have passed that same gift on, to see and hear it in your own son, and finally, to be side by side with him, sharing that gift...can there be a greater reward???
When they were together Linda and Richard Thompson sang beautifully together. Their son carries on the tradition and the harmonies. Such a lovely version of this emotional song
Thanks to Spotify I got to listen to this marvelous song by Jake Field, Sandi Thom, and Duncan Thompson. Richard here is masterful in reviewing life with another, both involved in a "blind romance" and then the struggle that each of them have in having separate visions. We hear from the older voice (Richard Thompson) and not his other half. Recasting the past, a younger voice (Teddy Thompson) brings back the youthful strength and energy that persists, never ending the singer's voice, still "believing it" ... leaving us the mystery of whether "it" was the mutual bond or the voices' hoping for persuasion to resolve their separate visions. In two months, I've listened to this song a hundred times. From the comments below I see that I'm not alone. Sad that there was no video.
@@arkgunslinger Not to worry. I found a fuzzy tape from Pinterest with Richard and Teddy ... which I could have done without, but it was special to watch Teddy. I genuinely appreciate your contribution. Thanks for your reply. We're in the same world. Thanks.

Your video is far from lame. It's so sweet, without distracting from listening to the song. First time I heard this song, years ago, I sobbed when Teddy started singing on verse 2. Ever since, I've come to love him as much as I do his dad. Such incredibly high quality music! Every song! I love the honesty in their lyrics and how they both make the guitar sing, really sing. So many others don't.
Glad you find it "amusing"! A friend asked me to post the song a few years back and I just had a bit of fun with the video. So I ended up with a very goofy video for a very beautiful song. Hopefully one or the other makes people smile.

I love this tune. I believe it first appeared as an instrumental on Sweet Talker. This is a great version but as long as you're on youtube, click on the scottish TV 99 version. Astounding.
Great song. When I heard the song first on Spotify I assumed it was Tim O'Brien joining in (anyone else go there?). Glad to be introduced to Teddy whose voice I now like as much as Tim O'Brien's!

Richard wrote the main body of the song as an instrumental for a movie soundtrack (Sweet Talker)- Tim Finn, if I recall correctly, wrote the words and the 'middle eight'. Not a 'Finn Bros' song when only one's involved. :)

Seek the Scottish Television broadcast of their performance. Its on RUclips somewhere. There's a glorious moment when Richard looks at Teddy with a "that's my boy that is" look of sheer wonder on his face.
I am not one for "father-son" kind of things, especially in music, but I have to say that Teddy is a talent in his own right. Wow, what music has come from this family. Teddy reminds me of Lyle Levitt, but maybe better even.
