This is my favorite Richard Thompson live band. Christine Collister and Clive Gregson are a perfect vocal match for Thompson. The Collister- Gregson-Thompson union lasted about 4 years. For me, Thompson was at the top of his game. And yes, I was fortunate to see them perform at a club in Denver years ago.
I LOVE Richard Thompson form his days with Fairport Convention to his collaborations with his former wife Linda Thompson to his solo career. One of the greatest guitarists ever.
It's almost hard to comprehend how many great songs this guy has written. If he couldn't play guitar at all, he would still be a legend, but the fact that he is an absolutely mind-blowing virtuoso of startling originality and vision who can also sing beautifully makes him seem like something of a miracle.
Heard this on the way home in the dark after hard reminders from the past came up today. Man this is deep got my attention immediately. Funny thing I wanted to just cry but I couldn't then heard that chorus can't cry if you don't know how. Dude.
Melancholic number from a master guitarist. Quite a few tracks from 'Across a Crowded Room' have a similar dark feel to them, but the album is full of excellent songs nonetheless, and remains one of my favourites.
One of very few truly original players. He's getting whang-bar effects without touching it. It's got nothing to do with his tone -- he'd sound like this on Byrdland or a PS3 controller.
A collective prayer to disperse, dispel the works and strategies of corruption, rape, subversion, deception, these crimes against humanity, defamation, subversion, slander. Within the presence of the divine we attune. In compassion we flow, as we inspire others, our spiritual family to know the rules that the creator has set for us to live by. To never compromise the privacy of those humble or "out of place." To always speak the truth. To not steal. These words be sealed to return balance with loving intention.
@lilithwest It is from an albumn called "From Across a Crowded Room." I actually heard this song for the first time coming from an outside beer garden bandstand. I looked it up at a record store later - no net in those days. The albumn is great. I actually think now it was him I heard preforming at Lil 5 Points in Atlanta.
I wonder just how much Knopfler and Lindsey Buckingham knicked from this guy ? I like em all- pretty much equally- but Richard was kicking it around (unappreciated) ,since the late 60's.
Please, will someone put this out on DVD or Blu-ray???? I have this on VHS..Would like to see an uncut version of this concert on either dvd or blu-ray...Great song..

The best compliment I ever got was when somebody told me that my playing reminded them of Richard Thompson's!
Amazing song and album, so underrated! Perfect in all ways
Bob Dylan is great but Thompson is the best what a songwriter and guitarplayer. Awsome
Simply one of Britain's finest.
Copy that!
I can feel the weight of this song deep in the middle of my chest. I believe this song teaches us how to cry if we can't.
This is on the top 10 of my favorite songs, and I like a LOT of stuff. Its sad and dead-on with life's circumstances.
I LOVE Richard Thompson form his days with Fairport Convention to his collaborations with his former wife Linda Thompson to his solo career. One of the greatest guitarists ever.
He's one of the greats......I love all his work
This guy is just amazing, all the great songs he's written. True legend.

"When love has died,
There's none starry-eyed
No kiss, no tears,
No farewell souvenirs
Not even a token, when the spell is broken"
Ouch.
All the joy has gone from her face, welcome back to the human race.......Yeah

This one and also "You Don't Say" for me :)
"master guitarist"
Agree. I would have to name Thompson as one of my top-10 favorite guitarists. His style is unique and sounds like no other.
Eternal great song
I actually saw this played on MTV back after it came out.
This should be rolled out again with new video. It is destined to be a big commercial success in 2020, trust me!
WOW , I been looking for this song for years ~so sad
"Can't cry if you don't know how, can't cry if you don't know how . . ."
Greatest break-up song ever.
I like this group assembly as well, enjoyed the back up vocals.

Up there with Knopfler in terms of finger vibrato right enough
He has written an ass kicking song
Technically true statement - but so is this:
He has written quite a few ass kicking songs
:b
All your lies are gonna tear at your dreams... never a truer word.
"you can't cry if you don't know how".
The live version on the compilation Watching The Dark (1993) is also worth hearing!
Love letters you wrote
Are pushed back down you throat
And leave you choking, when the spell is broken.
Ouch, that is so painful.
The story of my life
OK , now I have to hear some Sandy Denny!!!
Richard and Sandy ; two sides of the same priceless coin. I get it , mate.

Saying the most awful thing in the most precious place during the greatest act of love
One dislike? What is there to dislike? Nothing. Some people have no taste in good music..
Almost makes me want to feel dark in the '80s again. That cathedral reverb though.
Fnnnn best!!!
When you listen to this after a break-up, hide the razorblades!
nice ! です.
This is getting a CD release on Aug 2nd. 2 disc set on the Real Gone label.
And it includes two songs that are not on the video!
Vack when he toured eith his 56 strat.

Richard is God.
First rt I ever heard. Been his bait ever since.......mistress
As Henry Rollins would put it, this guy has been hammered flat by chicks.
How can there be a "dislike" ??????
Love letters you wrotePushed back down your throatAnd leave you choking...Dark.Pity it's not live.
It's definitely live.
@JackStraw65 Have you heard "Just the Motion" which he recorded with his ex-wife Linda? It gives me chills every time I hear it.
I forgot how much I loved this song. Thanks for the reminder.
Was doing it before Mark Knophler
to me it is like getting released from prison no tears
The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls Episode15
and so incisive
Is it just me, or does this feel like The Chain by Fleetwood Mac?
mdev61 same key and almost the same chord progression
sounds a bit Mark Knopfler-ish here.
This Genius was playing this style eg picking with plec and fingers simultaneously long before Mark Knopfler was around!
I believe Mark Knopfler has said he was influenced by Richard Thompson
Blind Boys of Alabama
I adore R.T. If you don't , what the fuck are you? Mistress Bex

Over the top video filters make this unwatchable.
I know people who are not devoted fans, imagine that! I think they need serious medical / psychiatric attention!
