My brother and I were in the audience watching this, my brother worked for STV at the time and got us free tickets. I remember it clearly, we were both mesmerised by this beautiful song. My brother has recently passed away, so finding this small but precious moment really helped me. A fleeting glance of us at 2.24 sitting side by side as he always was in life with me. I’m so glad I found this.
A hauntingly beautiful song by two of the best modern song writers (Thompson and T Finn) further enhanced by this sublime father/son performance. A gem for the ages.
Indeed, and funny as it is, so many of the RT songs really are some of the most beautiful you've ever heard. As June Tabor use to say: the blessed Richard Thompson.
Interesting Russell. Aged 62 I felt the need to learn this song. To have it truly inside of me. It's a gut-wrenchingly gentle capture of regret as you suggest, of a hopeful pessimism. We could make this work but we can't; we won't. It was never really there, truth be told.
My husband and I drove to Glasgow after work and were in the studio audience for this. Richard referred to Ted affectionately as “Slouch” between songs.
This is truly a beautiful song. I don't know much about Mr. Thompson's song catalogue, but this one got airplay in SoCal in the 1990's and I caught it and loved it. So cool that his son sang with him.
I often wonder what Thompson has to do to make the world listen this chap has been writing top class songs for the guts of 40 years now , even given us a son with the same ability, is a top class guitarist be it electric or acoustic, really excellent live be it on his own or with a band yet ask anyone if they have heard of him chances are it's likely they haven't. That being said he was here last week magic as usual
For a musician with such a mind set to be able to write these great tunes, I dont think he cares for a bigger audience. Success doesnt come in numbers I believe. I just feel privileged to find him through my own taste in music.
@@AncntDestructions Nope, Tim definitely co-wrote this with Richard. Mitchell Froom was producing Crowded House & RT albums at the time and introduced them (check the guest guitarist on Sister Madly). RT released Perrsuasion in 1991, Tim in 1993. Not saying Tim didn't play a part but very wrong to give him all the glory.
Me too! I never even heard of RT until earlier this year. I feel like I must have been living under a rock. Going to see him tomorrow night for the first time. Can't wait!!!!
this is so awesome, love the richness of RT's voice, blending with TT's fabulous emotional and innocent voice (and looks). What a blend of experience and sweetness...I can't decide which one I'd cheat on my husband and that is, if I just had to...just made up my mind.Wow, F, Wow.
My special friend, John Swanda, turned me on to Richard Thompson years ago. My first concert was ACL, the only time RT has played that venue. When he performed "Persuasion" I was in tears. One moment for me that I will never forget. Thanks John! Sea
Saw RT open for David Wilcox in Atlanta around 1998. Didn't know who he was but when he played this song it was one of the most beautiful things I had ever heard. Truly haunted me for years but couldn't remember the one-word name. After researching found this. Truly one of the most beautiful, angelic pieces of music ever put forth.
I only just heard of Cropredy Festival this year. I am currently in NZ and have my fingers crossed to see RT as well as FC when the world reopens. May it rain when I see him as well! Be well
one of my favorite Richard songs- he is the best for drawing characters - and great to hear this sung live with his son, who's a top singer too.. I know the words to many of his classics. Thanks so much for posting.
Richard Thomson singer/songwriter extraordinaire has passed his gifts on to his wonderful son, what a perfect team they make... such love between them, I love them both!
This was originally written by Richard Thompson and Tim Finn put the words to it. They performed it live together on Jools, I think. R.T. did some guitar work on Sister Madly and they collaborated on this as a follow up. Tim Finn even released it as a single.
OMG what a duet, such talent. this was such a wonderful experience hearing RT and his son. Thanks for friends sharing or I may not have found this wonderful soul RT. Peace and Love!
@Velocity500,thank's man,it was a special night for sure,he stepped on the little stage and says ":what?? where am I" and everyone just busted out laughin and he just ripped into a song and never really stopped, then for his last he did the "B" song as he called it,it was almost as if he was so sick of singing it,but to me it was pure magik cause the song has big meaning to me and to see him perform it about 3 feet away was simply amazing.
Bill McGaughy Teddy is Richard Thompson's son! They both put on an awesome show. Wonderful singing & guitar playing, and great rapport with the audience & each other. Catch them live if you can!
C'mon.. Linda the mother has a gorgeous voice - there is also a daughter but I haven't heard her but she must sing as she's part of the Thompson Family Album.
RT was featured on Iain Anderson Show (Glasgow) which brought me to watch some of his songs. This beautiful performance, I think I will watch/listen repeatedly.

I don't know what it is about this song but at 60 yrs old it brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it.Truly beautiful tune and performance!
I'm with you on this one.
Addicted to it since first listen.
Can a song be anymore beautiful. Lovely to see teddy
Richard is in my opinion one of Britains' greatest singer/songwriters and if I was king he would definitely be a "Sir".
They are both supperb singers
Sublime. Richard brilliant as always. Teddy's vocal timbre owes a lot to Mum.
He's got great musical genes! What a family!
His son's voice is so beautiful.
I agree. Almost makes me wanna fall in love with him. BTW, is he still single? 🥰

This song knocks me down every time I hear it.
And kudos to the camera man, who gives us glimpses into everything that makes this particular recording so special.
I could listen to this forever.
One of the most beautiful songs ever.
indeed
Just one of the greatest acoustic balladry moments ever captured, that's all.
Easily one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
No argument here.
Agreed

@@no834A song written by Tim Finn.
I cannot get my satisfying fill of the song so I've been listening to it several times a day for the past two weeks.
The Epitome of beauty 🎸🎤💕
I am completely obsessed with this, it is simply perfection
kindred spirit to me. haunting
Yes it is.
I saw them in Boston years ago and they blew me away with this song.. I am always going to remember their sound. Teddy's voice is angelic...
this is just crazy gorgeous.
Father and son: magnificent
Still my favorite song and duet - wonderful!
Oh, my! This is gorgeous! Their voices hit certain notes and I react, physically, with goosebumps on my arms and legs.
At age 62, I hear this as a song of regrets understood and overcome. Once you get there, you'll see how wondrous this song is ....

It's written in my heart. It's written in my soul. It's written in the stars. I still believe it. Beautiful song. Thank you for uploading this video.
Maybe the best love song ever. Really. Richard Thompson is one the the few.
Saw him in concert in 2018 it was one of the best things I'd been to ever in many years of live stuff he did this as an encore how lucky was that!
2 beautiful guitars, 2 beautiful voices, 2 beautiful men.
And he looks so much like her it's startling.
Great blend here between father's and son's very different voices.
Could this be more beautiful?
Just Sublime
*_That's the exact word ..._*
This melts my cold cold heart
My husband and I drove to Glasgow after work and were in the studio audience for this. Richard referred to Ted affectionately as “Slouch” between songs.

You would have to wonder why. Brilliant guitarist and songwriter.
Spot on! Can't believe he (and Teddy)isn't a regular on radio. His ex-wife Linda too.

20 years since I've heard him and I recognised the singing tone of Richard Thompson's acoustic guitar. Last time I saw him play live was maybe 1989
Thank God for the family Thompson. Epic. 👏👏👏

wow, this is wonderful.
Didn't know this was a Thompson co-write. It definitely has the sonic stamp of the Finn brothers. A lovely rendition.
Richard wrote the tune, not intending for it to be a song. Tim Finn added lyrics.
