- Richard Thompson: BBC Four Session - ...Goodbye Television Centre. Part of Goodbye to Television Centre. Guitarist, singer and songwriter Richard Thompson plays a concert filmed in BBC TV Centre.
This was broadcast on BBC Four on 22 March 2013.
Considering everything Swarb had been through by this point it's unbeleivable that he could still play at all, let alone make the violin almost burst into flames. This is a great testament to him and also the great musicianship of RT. It's hard to imagine the likes of these guys happening again. I was lucky enough to see Swarb quite a number of times with Martin Carthy, Fairports and Whippersnapper. Going back and listening to his early work with Ian Campbell shows that like the young RT, in early Fairports days - these guys were just brilliant from the outset.
Also a great testament to modern medicine !
I totally agree!
Can't get that "medicine" today RIP JEFF BECK!

Dave Swarbrick was a legend, I grew up listening to his music and luckily got to see him on his last tour! 😊 R.I.P my all time folk hero! x
Unbelievable!
I still find it hard to listen to Mr Swarbrick without getting all chocked up and tearful
Yeah, like right now!
that is how i feel about my old friends jim croce and maury muelheisen. i got to spend a few years spending time with jim and basically all his best friends. almost 50 years ago
Getting very choked up... a beautiful soul has left this world.
I get ya!
Two of the finest musicians and song writers ever.
Don't leave out Kami!
I count myself incredibly lucky to have seen and talked with Swarb many times since 1973 - in concert, at Cropredy and even in the back room of his house in Coventry while Jill was cooking his sausages... I shall always remember that day😆
An utterly incomparable singer, songwriter and fiddle player who shall never be forgotten.
Very kind of you - I wish I'd been there. It is thanks to 'Swarb' that I turned from the usual 6-string guitar,
that all of my friends seemed to play, to a 8-string mandoline & a conventional violin. Well, my levels were never
perfect, but the sheer pleasure to practice modestly in a dark shadow far below Swarb did me good. When
the album 'Rosie' appeared in the early 70s people around me yelled : ' Swarbrick has taken over the
Fairport'. Well, in some way he did, but as most of you know Sandy & Richard had left the Covention &
I suppose for a reason quite clear to them. By the way, the Fairport Convention could never be considered
as a solid, stable convention. So what. (Remember to all that happened within The Byrds...) Let us listen
once again 'Sloth'.

R.I.P. Dave Swarbrick ... :(
Dave was in poor health and hearing shot at this time. What a talent! Thanks R.T.
I'm glad I had the chance to work with you, Swarb
- They can't take that away from me mate!
God Bless you! - R.I.P.
Dave Swarbrick is a man who truly loves his instrument and don't even get me started on Richard!
I am a hard unsentimental bastard but this has killed me stone dead. Thank God he was here.
Omg you are so right!!!! 😊
Todays music has no joy of life, unlike this....this is the essence of the human soul. I pity those whove never discovered Fairport 😢
An interesting tid bit about the last tune in the medley... The Gravel Walk - time for a long, drawn out thing I discovered, then I'll shut up... I had ordered the Dave Swarbrick Fiddle Tunes the day he had passed, about a few hours before I heard about his passing. Anyway, after a nice email from Maartin Allcock when I desperately needed to make an address change, I received the book a week later (international mail, you see). The last portion of the book has small snippets about the many tunes Swarb has performed on his many, many albums - mostly to point out whether they were traditional pieces (what types) or originals from Swarb (Wishing is an original in this medley) and some have some historical notes about the tunes, which there are a few sentences on the last piece of the above last tune in the medley, The Gravel Walk. Although Swarb jokingly says "The Gravel Path to Granny!", there's some legitimacy to the title, or a reason for the title he gives. Quoted from the fiddle tune book, bottom of page 230: "A favorite reel in County Donnegal, which has a tradition of adapting Scottish tunes. In this case, the root melody is the Scottish reel The Highland Man Who Kissed His Grannie. Granny is a remote, uninhabited glen in southwest County Donnegal, where locals used to summer their sheep. When they went to gather them in Autumn, they would access Granny by climbing up the gravel paths, thus the name." I thought that was pretty kewl.
This was the last time I ever saw Dave Swarbrick perform, albeit on TV. What a wonderful memory! May God Bless You!
RIP Dave Swarbrick - Pioneer of Electric/Rock Folk Music
I never had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Swarbrick perform, but I cherish his recordings. I'm grateful he left us so much great music.
Oooh. He was pretty good. Never without a cigarette in his mouth sadly.
Beautiful! Thanks for posting. Going to see Richard in Feb. for the first time in 15 years. It will be the 10th time I have seen him live and this time I will be taking my teenage son. TIme to spread the faith!
The SWARB ... still feel very privileged to say I saw the great man & musician on many wonderful occasions & it was always a pleasure to be in the company of one of the greats of the Folk Tradition ... still & will always be sadly missed ... R.I.P , Dave Swarbrick .
Such a great loss to music - Dave was a brilliant musician.
I’m 73 now and grew up my Dad’s collection of Jimmy Shand and his Band.
This music has never left me… just the right side of melancholy melody and beauty with gaps and spaces for you to fill in your own understanding.
Certainly not painting by numbers!
Many thanks. RIP, Dave. You've left us a treasure.
It's time the BBC released this BBC4 gig on DVD and Blu-ray, as it is an amazing performance from all members.
RIP Swarb, the Stephan Grapelli of folk music. My dad used to know you back in the Ian Campbell days.
A true genius has left us but will never be forgotten. Getting really emotional writing this.
When Swarb left, Fairport lost it's soul! Rick and Chris do not manage to fill in the gap... This incredible lightness and feeling make him a giant. The true sound of Fairport came from him.
I will always love you, Dear Swarb.
I will never forget that sunday morning dancing in front of Fairport Convention at Roskilde Festival start of the 70`s
Two incredible musicians at the top of their form. A pure joy to listen to.
Thanks to Dave and The Fairport Convention.
I`ve been with you for - all the time.
From Danmark. Preben
I believe it was late 68" or into 69' I saw Fairport Convention at the Fillmore in NYC. Never saw them before and they blew me away. These two fellas were onstage. I believe it was the "Full House" tour. So, good. Memorable. Little Swarbuck was tapping his feet and jumping around.
Say hi to Sandy for us
Happy Birthday Swarb. The Fairport family are all downing a drink or two or three in your honour. A pleasure to have seen you play.
The whole show is brilliant, I love Swarb, he's still got it, what an absolute legend?.... Ladies and Gentlemen....Sir David Swarbrick... Folk Salute!!!!! (watch his fingers!!!!)
Two of the all time greats !
This is beyond beautiful.
Back in the 70s as a teen, my girlfriend (now my wife) played me a copy of Fairport Chronicles and my perception of music was never quite the same. It still blows my mind that a group so grounded in tradition could be so innovative.
This is delightful! Swarb was a FB friend for many years since I contacted him about being awakened by Fairport playing the Lark while in Oman in 1972!,
Pure, unadulterated magic.
Thank you for the music, Mr. Swarbrick.
It doesn't get much better than this.
R.I.P Swarb. Go gentle.Go with love. xXx
I echo that. Goddess rest his merry soul.
It doesn't get any better than this .
In the presence of greatness. Enough said!
R.I.P. Dave , you where the greatest, say hello from me to the other Dave up there that made me come to know you and your music, in my heart forever
I love old men with young hands. Beautiful.
Dave Swarbrick ...The Legacy That will Last Forever .
Two superb artists well matched.RIP Swarbs
Looking back at the wonder we lost on this Earthly Veil to the glories of Heaven's Band .
Oh those wonderful memories came flooding back.....🥲
Thank you Swarbs. RIP
LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fairports never actually die. Do they, Sandy?
He got me obsessed with Dirty Linen (Lat Night's Fun etc.) and seeing this finishing with another obsession The Gravel Walk - I'm still inspired 50 years on and realise I'll never get a fiddle to sound as stunning!! Farewell to a genius and inspiration to tens of thousands.
Once, just once, some one came ro me while I was busking and said " you're influenced by Dave Swarbrick, I can hear it in your playing." I had to stop for a bit ro recover.
Saw Dave Swarbrick twice in a folk club in London. Brilliant. Was with Martin Carthy. Also have seen Richard Thompson in London, Edinburgh and Newcastle. Very special talent and a nice man.
Seen Richard countless times. Saw Fairport with Swarb twice. This clip is remarkable.
