At 15 my guitar teacher said, we are not going to play today. I want you to listen to this album. It was "Shoot out the lights". I realized the possibilities. I also realized, anyone that turns you on to RT is a real friend. Thank you Greg Rosenberg!
I'm proud to say I own a copy of every album Richard Thompson has recorded , including his Fairport Convention days . Am I alone in thinking he has got even better with age . I find it sad that a great many people have never heard of this remarkably talented musician .
ThefightingCelt No, you’re not alone. My husband and I have loved him since the Fairport days and his albums with Linda. It’s odd that he is still relatively unknown, but now plays huge venues where ticket prices are hard for many of his long-time fans to afford. And they sell “meet-and-greet” premium ticket packages with a chance for a photo with RT. We always enjoyed a few brief words with him as we bought CDs during intermission at his shows at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. I really miss those old, more intimate concerts. Now it’s thank God for You Tube!
You are not alone... though great in the early days, he's a living legend among us today. I cannot think of an acoustic player on the planet I like more! His songwriting is so solid and deep too. Beeswing is an everlasting folk song!
I first saw him at the Ark (of course) in Ann Arbor in 1986. It was a cold winter night and we were late. Walking into the Ark, the rocking beat of Wall of Death came out. That was the first time I ever saw RT live. This year on 2/13 we saw him at the Boulder Theatre, front row seats, one of a small handful of artists I'd pay that kind of money for. This electric trio is very good. RT is, if possible, better than ever. I just can't find the words to say how great he is. He's really operating on a whole other level. Who plays guitar like that? And writes so many great songs. And sings with such soul. And such a humble person. I feel like he's channeling 500 years of British Isles minstrel tradition. like he's letting us into a very special, private place. Just astonishingly good.
I just saw him for the first time. Amazing. He is a force of nature with an acoustic guitar. I don't think he can be adequately described; you have to see him to understand. He impressed me in every way: vocally, songwriting, and, of course, instrumentally. His guitar work is like nothing else.
George McElroy - so glad you enjoyed seeing Mr T - I am off to see him solo acoustic in a couple of weeks at Brighton and cannot wait. Third time for me. Make sure you also get to see his electric guitar work - in my opinion it is even more original than his acoustic playing - not everyone will agree I'm sure!
To listen to Richard is a pleasure. To see him perform is a revelation. The Beauty of his lyrics, combined with his incredible guitar playing and vocals, you wonder if he signed away his soul to be THAT good!
Saw him in the Hundred Club in London........wonderful....I know he's done masses since but I still absolutely adore his Amnesia album....l feel sorry for folk who haven't discovered him........
Had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Richard after a show in Brisbane a few years ago... He's a fabulous musician and a charming man...Loved this version of Uninhabited Man.
I tried once to put together a "Best Of" mix from my extensive Richard Thompson recordings collection - trouble was every song, every take, every variation was the best!
nigelbourne23 - yes a good sound engineer is worth their weight in Platinum! These unsung heroes are too often overlooked and only noticed when they do a bad job!
He started out in Fairport Convention doing, among other things,Bob Dylan covers. These days Mr. Dylan should be honored to be mentioned in the same sentence with Richard. One of the most talented and least appreciated artists of my generation certainly. And that is probably understatement.
You don't really hear it on these two songs, but Mr Thompson can sound like a complete band all by himself, such is his prowess on the guitar. His three - man - band must be absolutely stupefying to see.
12 seconds in, look at all the bald spots! I'd be one of them if I was there, but I thought it was funny and cute that all these men of a certain age came to see Richard.
I've never been in the front row for any of his many shows that I have attended, but I've been in one of the first five several times. Just amazing to watch and hear. Going to see him again in January, only 10th row this time.
Dan Sneyd - I have heard people say this before - especially about Richard's voice not being as good as Teddy's, but I disagree. I think they both have equally beautiful voices just very different - they compliment each other perfectly too: Persuasion is twice as beautiful and heart rending when sung by father and son together!
I have a tune very simple . Waltz of a drunken sailor. They would prefer to rob and abuse me to death than let me record or give me air play. Such is the world today.

Decades of brilliance as a songwriter/guitarist. The great Richard Thompson.
Never seen him doing a bad performance. He has so much respect for his fans ❤❤❤❤
You are not alone thinking he has become better getting older. He keeps getting better year after year. The greatest.

Agree
It drives me crazy when people in my age group (I'm 73) don't know who I am talking about when I mention Richard.

@@kevinb3812 I absolutely adore the song , Beeswing ; imo one of the finest folk songs ever written .

Simply the best! Thank you for this post, great sound and image quality! Richard is the most outstanding musician one could ever hope to encounter!
I am devoted. You can never go back once you've seen him.
RT makes magic every time he touches his instruments.
Un des plus grands folksinger guitariste d'exception Richard Thompson un des grands méconnus ; à écouter d'urgence
Man and guitar in perfect synchronicity. It really doesn't get any better than this!
What a humble genius this man is!
Not just ONE of the best...
THE BEST; and he's been doing it for nearly 50 years!! GO RT!!!!
Amen
I always revert to this performance when I find someone that has not found richard Thompson . Never fails .

That's what I've been telling people for 30 years! Glad you got your feet wet....see you at a show!
What's amazing is that he plays w/two hands (5 fingers), but sounds like he's playing w/ three hands of six fingers.
You said it - he really has to be seen and heard live. He's like a mighty oak with roots in the stage.
To listen to Richard is a pleasure. To see him perform is a revelation. The Beauty of his lyrics, combined with his incredible guitar playing and vocals, you wonder if he signed away his soul to be THAT good!

Richard Thompson. The absolute best ❤❤❤❤❤
He is so good and especially unique. Saw him twice in the 80’s in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Electric both times - really loud and rather great.
If this is your hero, you are an intuitive human being. Dude throws away riffs that surpass the efforts of many a "master".
Thanks for posting this..😉
I love this man, his humour and his music. Respect Mr T.
Had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Richard after a show in Brisbane a few years ago... He's a fabulous musician and a charming man...Loved this version of Uninhabited Man.
I love the snaring sound of this Lowden Guitar!
Richard Thompson-the greatest ☯️🕉🙀
i have been listening to him for years. i never got to see him. incredibly versatile
I discovered him late but he is a remarkable talent. Can't get enough of him.
Same here - it wasn't until 1972/3 l began to see him as a great talent in his own right and separate from Fairport Convention.
I’ve only recently discovered him & im liking his voice, lyrics & wow his effortless guitar playing is great !
hey kids, performed one week ago in me town; remarkable energy still full force. Stunning really...
Phenomenal! This man is indeed a force of nature, as George noted.
There's not many artists like Richard Thompson an outstanding triple threat of
Talent fabulous voice, greatness of guitar and incredible songs
I tried once to put together a "Best Of" mix from my extensive Richard Thompson recordings collection - trouble was every song, every take, every variation was the best!
Oh, I enjoyed every second of his performance.
That, ladies and gentlemen ... is how it is DONE! Incredible.
So glad I was there again. Quality sound, excellent performance. Yep, we've got the chorus :)
This guy is fantastic.
Just 1 word. ..Beautifull ...this music and his beautifull voice...give me a peacefull feeling.... love him whit this guitar☯️💃🔥💖🦋☯️👍👍
He's such a great artist, great guitarist and on stage he's always so modest en simply, no airs, just he and his guitar.
Not forgetting his remarkable FOH Engineer, Simon Tassano, whose contribution is massive.
nigelbourne23 - yes a good sound engineer is worth their weight in Platinum! These unsung heroes are too often overlooked and only noticed when they do a bad job!
A legend tight there...when will we see his likes again
How wonderful, thank you for sharing

He started out in Fairport Convention doing, among other things,Bob Dylan covers. These days Mr. Dylan should be honored to be mentioned in the same sentence with Richard. One of the most talented and least appreciated artists of my generation certainly. And that is probably understatement.
Dylan has performed '52 Vincent live - it's on the Tube.. masters honouring each other!!!
@@richardmitchell8482 However, Dylan's cover is probably the worst cover I've heard of Vincent 1952
Omg wow the 1st song I was sceptical the second song play me away I’m a fan now
this is "Uninhabited Man" from "Mock Tudor"...
Insanely good
two beauties...
brilliant thanks for uploading
I love you RT
I saw a guy with a thumb pic also using his fingers in Oxford last week. Some of these street musicians in England know their stuff.
excellent video!
I have only recently discovered this amazing talent
Can anyone recommend his top songs pls
PLEASE
You don't really hear it on these two songs, but Mr Thompson can sound like a complete band all by himself, such is his prowess on the guitar. His three - man - band must be absolutely stupefying to see.
Graham Exton ii
Yes
With his electric band, he will blow you right out of the arena. The guitar solos are not to be believed.
@@johnparo5800 I have seen Richard do electric solos. Wonderful stuff.
He's also a great guitar player...
fh horn one of the best ever!
Songs are The Uninhabited Man, and Johnny Far Away. I'm not so fond of the second song, but Uninhabited Man is a real gem.
I'm the opposite, but I'm sure we can all agree he's one of the best!
Thank you
Brilliance!
Muy buena música.agradable
Together with Tom Waits and Garry Rafferty 3 of the most underrated geniuses of their time
Gerry..
RT probably wouldn't agree with your assessment of Rafferty, at least as a producer
As a producer, you're right, but RT never denied his abilities as a songwriter or singer.
@@mikelasater2016, yep, but those recordings are hella interesting to listen to, now, forty+ years later!
Looking forward to seeing rt in Canterbury in July
Genius!
I wish this acoustic version of Uninhabited Man was on Apple Music.
A kind of genius.
Ive been lucky enough at age if of 36 going to Cropedy festival but this song hits a nerve .. whats its called.. child memories x
Sweet Warrior.
Ur so good Richard.
Ashame u dont get more air play.
oop's you did it again!
Love his version, when he goes into 3/4 British folk waltz time!
Any questions…? Ride on RT.
12 seconds in, look at all the bald spots! I'd be one of them if I was there, but I thought it was funny and cute that all these men of a certain age came to see Richard.
I don’t really know how but I got front row seats for his Toronto Dec 15/18 show
You're asking if anyone wants to go with you,- am I right?
If you have 200 bucks per seat lol
I've never been in the front row for any of his many shows that I have attended, but I've been in one of the first five several times. Just amazing to watch and hear. Going to see him again in January, only 10th row this time.
Mine too, Betty!
I'm waiting for Mr. Thompson to get a Knighthood from Q.E.2 ...long overdue!
He got a CBE
followed by Johnny's Far Away from Sweet Warrior
And one of mine
March 2020 update: no more cruise- ship performances for Mr Thompson, I hope and presume; we need him alive and healthy!
they are both amazing, but if teddy had Richards guitar skills, and Richard had teddy's voice I think they'd reach perfection
What album is that sea shanty on??
What's the name of the second song?
Johnny's Far Away.
Thanks a bunch!
Trying to watch what both of his hands are doing at the same time, LOL!
Did I really hear only one man and an acoustic guitar?
I sing honkey tonk women to it.
I have a tune very simple .
Waltz of a drunken sailor.
They would prefer to rob and abuse me to death than let me record or give me air play.
Such is the world today.
Try another "unknown" guitaist like Derek Trucks....
Only from a general public point of view. Musicians & other music lovers are well aware of that man's skills.
