Neil as songwriter and CH -- every iteration since they started -- are a gift from god. Every song the guy writes is truly wonderful, and the band delivers the songs with gorgeous power. A friend gave me their first record, and I think I own everything they have released. I particularly like the bonus tracks on the CD singles and other oddball recordings because they show the intelligence, spontaneity, and love for the audience that don't appear on studio tracks. The concerts are magical.
I heard that some journalist asked Paul Mc Cartney how it felt to be the best songwriter of all times. He allegedly replied: "Well, I don´t know. You better ask Neil Finn." or something along these lines... :-P
This man i love so much !!!!Split Enz RULES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! then Crowded house The guy is a genius !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when i here them i want to tear up ! my teen years and young Adult, at 56 i am so blessed to have the music from them !! 😊
Rick - This video is one of my dreams. To just listen to Neil tell the story of how he wrote these amazing songs. Thanks so much for bringing this to us!
I was front row for Crowded House at Mississippi Nights in St Louis 30ish years ago and one thing that struck me about Nick was how ultra smooth he was on that bass---his fingers gliding note to note like magic. Also I remember a bottle of vodka being thrown, yes, thrown back and forth amongst the band members that night. Possibly it was someones birthday though I dont recall for sure. The boys were quite funny that night, and especially Mr Hester, who is still sorely missed by many. Some lucky fan standing next to me got to get up and sing the entirety of Better Be Home Soon and I was so jealous it hadnt been me. He did a fantastic job though. Crowded House in a smaller venue is like going to a party at Neils house.....everyone feels intimately involved.....it's like a drunken family reunion. God bless Crowded House.
Saw them in Manchester (UK) a few weeks ago. By far the best gig I have been to in my life - and I'm nearer 60 than 50. Amazingly well-crafted songs, played by brilliant musicians, incorporating beautiful harmonies... all played with a smile on their faces.
Both Finns are incredible harmonisers. The best harmonies I heard in my life were at one of Tim's album launches, upstairs pub on Dominion Rd, Neil jumped up with him for a couple of songs. Just the two of them, each with a Maton, and the harmonies... out of this world. Can be easy to forget that one of the things that set Crowded House apart were how incredibly well Nick and Hessie matched that: as a trio, CH were as good as the two brothers who'd been doing it from childhood. Have a glorious memory from the second CH tour: end of the song they held "Better be home..." and then paused. All of Founders sang back "SOOOOON" with a delicious cacophony, notes all over the place, and then when everyone was done: Neil, Nick, and Hessie bring it back in, just the one word to finish with, where it should have been, exactly on pitch, achingly beautiful, magically pure. So very very good. (one hell of a night, that: Paul Ubana Jones, Schnell Fenster, Crowded House, and then an unbilled Split Enz reunion. damn, that was a good one.)
@@butting23 that would have been amazing! I saw one of the Enz reuninon tours in Brisbane - would have been early 2000s I think.. Not sure of the exact date. Definitely a life-affirming moment! I discovered Split Enz in 1987 as a very awkward teenager and became OBSESSED right through till my early 20s. I still love the music today, but that period I was totally in love with the whole Split Enz vibe. Every piece of art, every school project, every story and poem was based on the Enz output! Some day I'd love to meet Neil and Tim and tell them 'thank you' for saving my life in that difficult stage. I'd also love to do the same to Peter who ran the fan club back then. I was a subscriber and it was like Christmas whenever a package or letter arrived from Friends of the Enz.
Neil Finn is one of my guitar heroes...most of my guitar influences are strong melodic rhythm players...I discovered after years of playing, that all the time I was using up learning solos, I could be playing a song. Once I got over the ego element of trying to play solo parts of songs, I felt liberated. I realised I have always been drawn to the percussiveness of rhythm guitar parts.
Such a talent! Crowded House live in concert one of the great experiences. Neil Finn is such a gracious performer who connects effortlessly with his audience, not to mention his amazing musicianship and stunning vocals.
I remember, many or even too many years ago i found a video of Neil Finn, performing "Don't dream it's over" all alone on a stage big enough for 3 headliners... all alone with 1 acoustic guitar and a realky great song. Over the years i lost the link, but the memory of this will never go away!
Indeed crowded house one of the best bands ever neil always experimental firstly with split enz and crowded house taking tunes and lyrics in directions you couldn't imagine they could go to
Loved seeing this. Every few years I get on a Crowded House kick again (I'm on one of 'em now, in fact!) These songs seem timeless to me. Just love 'em...
The first time I ever heart Crowded house and still today I knew they were the most sophisticated songwriters ever. What I am saying is that if music and melody was a cup of water then they are an overflowing cup of water compared to about anyone else.
I watched the Glastonbury set last night......best thing I've seen in a long time. I first saw Crowded House at the Hammersmith Odeon in London around 1990. Great songs, great production, great band.
Some people were surprised when Mick Fleetwood brought Neil Finn into Fleetwood Mac, but to me it was just such an inspired move. I think whereas everybody and his/her dog is a fan of The Beatles (to the point where I actually play down my fandom), Crowded House offer a place where real music fans can revel. They have a rich history going back to their roots of Split Enz and the evolution through The Mullanes.
And they were absolutely bloody brilliant last night in Manchester. But, like you say, music people can appreciate their work. The cross section of society that was in the 8000 crowd last night was surreal.
Loved how they talked about that bass riff that Nick does on Don't Dream it's Over. Always liked that to start the song. I was hoping they would talk about the bass line on the last chorus when Nick plays an F to G instead of the regular G# to A# (Bflat) on the Hey now, hey now. It just hits the spot there. Very ingenious.
I'm so glad I discovered that interview, they continue to be themselves and the fine memory of a meeting in 1996 in Ghent, Belgium remains. They can't take it off my mind anymore.
It was real tough being a Crowded House fan in the US after 1987…and being pre-internet…I only knew of Woodface because a Rolling Stone Mag Review (Three stars my ass) I used to buy Goldmine Magazine so I could order boots and ordered the Import of Together Alone a few months prior to the IS release…I was a fanatic and would push the Woodface cassette to anyone wanting to listen….made a lot of fans….The funny part of it all was going to their shows and they were sold out…

Bearsville's 8088 Neve there,, its origin was the Who's Ramport Studios. Nice that it found a caring home. Unusual console, inline design as opposed to split, which was customary for Neve at the time.
Lovely insight from the Band ! My old Neighbour in London, Jim, said to me one day 'Do you know that Song 'Always take the weather with you' ? 'Stupid', he said, 'How can you take the weather with you ?' ' They don't stop playing it on the Dukebox in the Pub'. ' Do you mean this song Jim ?' I said and I put the record on... 'Yeah, that's the one' he said laughing 😆 I always think of Jim, R.I.P when I hear it now. Makes me smile.
I think as a long time fan of CH and having invested my hard earned earnings upon their every release , that this should at least , entitle me that Gibson !
We just saw these guys in Vancouver at the Orpheum and they were fantastic! REALLY enjoyed the show. AND I see they're using ATC SMC25 speakers just like like i have in my studio so I love them even more now!!
Absolutely love this!! ..and great to meet you when you played at the Adelaide Grand Prix in the 80s. I was one of two young production guys working on stage. Fabulous day!

He has one of the best voices in all of music.

That is the cherry on top of an already amazing song, and the fact that it only happens that way once makes it even cooler.
