Not surprising Neil speaks so articulately and has such a way with words knowing the lyrics he writes. What a humble and talented person- Neil and Crowded House are incredible
Always loved Crowded House but hadn't fully appreciated what an amazing musician Neil Finn is, or what a very nice down to earth bloke he is (and others in this). Fascinating and fun video, thanks lads.
This was an all-time great episode - mostly due to the respect and adoration shown to the Finns. It's obvious the level of impact their music has had on Dan, and it was fun to see him be able to experience and share this. Great job, guys!
This 56 year old, who bought a Kramer Ferrington the day after seeing Crowded House on the DDIO tour in San Francisco, is completely curled up in a fanboi puddle on the floor. Bless you guys for this.
Neil is my all time favorite musician. Have seen CH, Neil solo and the 'brothers' tour w/ Tim several times each. As much as I love CH, I think the solo shows were my favorite. Besides being a great songwriter and performing musician, the man is incredibly charming on stage, just really connects w/ the audience.
They say that you should never meet your heroes. What a great endorsement that this statement is nonsense. To this day, the best gig musically that I have ever been to, was a Crowded House gig. Loved the video...cheers guys!
Hello John, Mick here. Just wanted to amplify your comment. The Crowded House crew and family were astoundingly generous and welcoming. So pro it almost hurts! We are deeply grateful for their time and kindness!
Absolutely beautiful. Love Crowded House & seeing those beautiful faces as they ooze passion about music & artistry, we all love. Music is the soul & Crowded House is that of pure soul, magic & an abundance of joy for many people worldwide. Thank you for this glimpse into the Legendary Band Crowded House & for Neil being as awesomely genius & beautiful as always and Liam & Marcus for being fabulous great. Love this🙌
Holy crap, Dan mention knowing Neil Finn in an episode years ago, and I commented, "how about having Neil as a guest?" Thought it would never happen and BAM, here's this amazing video! Neil is one of my all-time heroes too, one of the best pop songwriters since the Beatles, an amazing singer, really solid guitar and keyboard player and all-around really nice guy. I really like Crowded House's latest album too, a few tracks like Start of Something are up there with their best. Thanks guys, loved this one!!
The simplicity of a genius. Neil has a very «singer/songwriter» approach to guitar, something I really can relate to. All gear, sound and guitars are there to serve the song. Liam and his board is much more about indulging oneself and doing wacky «pedal-things». Which, let’s face it, is what TPS is all about too. So funny to see Mitchell Froom in the background, minding his own business and just getting on with it. One of the greatest producers around. Besides producing Crowded House he’s also produced the likes of Richard Thompson. Another hero of all of us, I bet. Great episode. Thanks lads!
There is NO ONE else who can play those Gretsch guitars like Mr. Neil Finn. What a wonderful insight into his and Liam's setups. TPS you knocked it out of the park again.
I am in no way a pedal techy, I just love the sounds and craft they create. This together with one of my all-time favourite bands meant this video was a little slice of heaven!
Seven Worlds Collide still one of my favourite musical memories. So thankful I went to that show. Neil's music is a soundtrack to so many of our lives in NZ & Aus. Thanks for the video! Very interesting.
My favorite song writer ever.....Neil's work has staying power...I'm a huge fan of everything he's done and his brother Tim as well...I always feel Neil writes songs for the right reason and it always speaks to me.
I love each and every episode of TPS (even when I only understand/care about 35% of the things you’re talking about), but there are a few in which your self-effacing fandom and genuine enthusiasm make me feel like I am truly along the ride of your journey. Thank you for allowing for that connection, and for doing such a top notch job of presenting it! Sending love from New York. P.S. Thanks to Marcus, this was the first episode of TPS in which my wife may have been more interested than I was.
That was fantastic, what lovely people. It's clear the source of that beautiful music is Neil's heart and soul. And those pedal boards and guitars were lovely too. Thanks for putting this together and sharing it with us. You captured something really special in this episode, more felt than seen or heard. Bravo!
I've been a fan of NF's music ever since I saw the video for "I Got You" back in the early 80's. He's my favorite songwriter too, and his personality is so genuine and down to earth. I'd love to meet him someday. So glad to see CH continuing on, I think with the addition of Liam, Elroy and Mitchell, that the band is in good hands for as long as they want to go with it. It's a really good lineup and is possibly the best at playing the songs with every detail as was on the records. Hoping to see them back in the USA this year!
@@ThatPedalShow And very nicely edited too I might add. Between you and Dan you’ve really set the standard for how well these rig/tour artist interviews can be done.
Fantastic episode. I couldn't say I listen to Neil Finn or Crowded House that much, but I can recall that one of my favourite gigs ever was Neil and Tim Finn at the Union Chapel, Islington in 1995. A mate had tickets and I went along. Great venue, great gig and very engaging musicians. Neil comes across well in any interview.
What a treat! I smiled immediately when I saw Neil's vintage Hot Cake - I (along with pretty much every guitarist in NZ in the 70's) had one on the floor. I recently reconnected with Paul and he shot me a Double Hotcake (my old one got lost or 'borrowed' somewhere along the line). Having those 3 different sounds available is really something. I have followed Neil's music since the early days when he opened for the Enz mid-70's in Wellington - his solo vocal and acoustic guitar set was amazing . . . He and Tim have contributed so much to NZ music, certainly an inspiration for us in Schtung when we started out! Thanks to all concerned for such a cool in-depth look at the gear . . . Magnatone for Xmas, then !!! :)
So damn awesome. We all know how great a songwriter Neil is, but I often think his guitar playing is criminally underrated. Thank you so much for this little bit of insight into the gear behind the guitarist.
Check out the solo in “Take A Walk” from the 7 Worlds Collide concert video - played on that ‘64 Gretsch Duo Jet, IIRC. Eddie Vedder singing and Neil cutting loose like I’d never seen before!
Best video I've seen in a while. Neil Finn is a genius. IMHO, it won't be long before he's up for a knighthood. In my experience if you like Crowded House, you like Squeeze and vice versa, so Dan, if you're not familiar with Squeeze, it's about time you were. I've seen Neil play with Johnny Marr and Roddy Frame, about 20-something years back. My dream would be to see him do a collaboration with Difford & Tilbrook. The mention of the Sydney Opera House Farewell gig, brings back memories of Paul Hester...
Amazing, beautiful. Great job guys. Classic down to earth and humble Kiwis. I grew up in NZ listening to Split Enz, Crowded House etc. Part of my life sound track. Love all the Finns music including Tim as well. Roundhead studio is a great place to visit and work in as well. Often Neil has some of his collection of guitars on hand and they are available to use which is pretty awesome! Though when I was there a few years back most of his gear was out wth Fleetwood Mac.
What a truly lovely and brilliant team, not just Crowded House, but Dan and Mick. Inspiring tones, musical understanding and the most bonkers looking 12-string! Fantastic show!
Those old Maton electrics used to be had here in Australia, up to about 30 years ago, for $100 easy. Then they crept up to the crazy prices they are now. I remember seeing three of the Flamingos and Fyrebirds on a rack in a pawnshop here in Brisbane at a $100 each that sat in that shop for years..
As a kiwi guitarist I really enjoyed every minute of those interactions - thanks so much for bringing that to us. You have to love the self depreciating humour!
Oh Dan, just got to the bit when he said about the GR power. Moments like that must make the ‘scary early years or trial and error and are we gonna pull this offness’ melt into nothingness. Absolutely wonderful.
Lads, thanks for this, what a treat. Fresh back from the crowded house show at Glasgow on Friday. After falling out of love with playing recently, the gig followed by this vid has got the juices flowing again!
Neil Finn!! One of my favorite artists - had the pleasure to see him with Crowded House at the Austin City Limits festival back in 2007. His music has always meant so much to me, my wife and even our kids.
Neil and Tim Finn and Split Enz are/were huge influences and we got to meet and hang out w/ both of them while touring Australia...Neil invited us to come see him in NZ and I have always regretted not taking him up on it! An absolutely lovely guy when we met him at the ARIA awards and afterparty...sometimes meeting your heroes is a real letdown, sometimes it exceeds all possible expectations, as was the case w/ Neil.
Still a favourite band of mine and just saw them at their recent show in Toronto. Well done run down of the boards and guitars and amps! Such a cool video and so special to have Neil and Liam take some time to talk about their gear!
Wow memories of standing next to the desk at the Hordern pavilion circa 1988? The consciousness Neil has about the connection the audience has to parts of songs was incredibly inciteful I thought. Awesome. So happy for you Dan.
Phenomenal job with this guys! It felt like we were all gathered 'round the pedalboard with you. When I saw the Stonehenge teaser this morning, I knew it would be great.
I don't care what business you are in, you want to try to find as MANY guys like that Tech as you possibly can. Find people with passion, even if perhaps there are others with more experience, but less passion, and then feed their passions. They will become MONSTEROUS contributors to your success. Don't ever forget how valuable they are, and find everry way possible to compensate them and take care of them. Every business is about PEOPLE. Neil hired a home run of a guy right there. Really awesome first third of this episode. I'll be watching that a few more times. There was a ton of great stuff and tech, but that ownership and commitment displayed is re-invigorating in terms of getting ready to go back to work this Monday.
Yes - Marcus is clearly a terrific tech. Super-smart and full of enthusiasm. Worth his weight in gold to any touring band. No surprise his services are sought after. Interesting to hear he’s also now tech for Jon Herrington in Steely Dan’s touring band - an awesome guitar player.
I still like Crowded House. I grew up listening to Crowded House ever since 1986 when I was 7 years young when MTV aired music videos. I Love You Crowded House! Crowded House rules!🎉
That was Lovely to see Dan on the edge of fan meltdown meeting his musical hero. You can feel the reverence! Lovely to see such detailed rig rundowns as well, in a professional touring context. Very enjoyable show!
I've been introduced to the great music of Split Enz and then Crowded House, thanks to one of my dearest friends, a dj and bass player in Venice (Italy) area, sadly passed away last year.
One of my favorite bands of the 1980s and 1990s... my favorite memory is them coming on stage at the Torhout (Belgium) festival in 1992 after it had been raining almost all day, playing 'Weather with You' and the sun coming out almost as if they had summoned it. Happy days! Massive thanks for this episode!
Excellent work Dan & Mick! Marcus seems like a great guy who is knowledgeable and open to learning; tools to be the ultimate tech and it’s no surprise he’s getting the best gigs. So great to see a fellow kiwi getting to show his rig, Neil’s a legend here in NZ, as you know. 🇳🇿love the sonic exploration that Liam’s into too. Cool stuff
Ordinarily, words come easily to me. Not today. Today, all I've got is: ERMAGERRRRD!!!!!! Literally losing my mind, hanging on every single word my hero Mr. Neil Finn had to say. Dan, dear friend-not-yet-met: you were a champion of composure. I don't know how you did it. But thank all that is good and right in the world that you boys were there. "Legend" falls so short of the mark, D&M. And Mr. McKean to boot?!?!? WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW?!?!?!?!?!
Hello from Seattle. OMG! I love the intro! I know that road! A co-worker and I stayed in Salisbury on our way home (back to the US) from a work trip. We rented bikes and pedaled through the countryside, at one point popping up on the backside of Stonehenge on a path through the edge of the surrounding farmlands. It was an amazing bike ride and made me absolutely fall in love with the English countryside. And the Real Ale. Everything. Ahh that brought back such wonderful memories. What a wonderful country you guys are in.
Just started the video, but man, takes me back to when Time and Tide came out. There was also a filmed concert of that tour. They did I Got You and I decided he was the coolest guy in the band. I still have the crazy laser etched vinyl of that one and my 12 year old self was quite thrilled to discover Neil and I share a birthday
Love how Marcus keeps referring to TPS videos. It’s refreshing that someone that you or others interview does their own research on the interviewers. At first I was thinking, especially with the gig rig power supply thing, that he was a closer TPS fan. 😂 Then as the interview went on you realize he’s just like all other viewers learning from your videos too and very much comfortable with himself to say it… He’s just like us… except for the good looks and insane amount of gear at his disposal and the access to one of the bests artists around. So yeah. Just like us.
Thank you , thank you , thank you. Terrific interview, great camera work. Really liked the chat with Marcus(the tech). Deluxe Memory Man sales are about to BOOM!!
MEGA: Loved this what a treat, Neil Finn what can you say totally agree with Dan if you play and love music and don’t like Crowded House you need to put your coat on and go home and get your head examined, forget about it , he is up there with Anyone, King Songsmith, and what a great singer ,an all time GREAT, you Lucky Fellas , This was great cos I could really see how much you both enjoyed this ,Dan especially was made up 😎❤️⭐️🌞👍🏻 .
Mick & Dan, this is'nt about today's video, it's actually the first youtube comment I've ever made as I have always said that only the kind of people who comment on youtube videos, comment on youtube videos and I'm certainly not one of those. I just don't want to encourage the algorithms any more than I do, so I don't subscribe to any channels at all. No smartphone either. But here I am moved to tell you that these TPS vids have helped my tone no end. I messed with a little solid state practice amp for a while during lockdown, and I almost went as far as setting things up to ask you both a question through the superchat, though this old mac was fighting me about that. In the end it turned out my wife was able to answer the question for me. "Well obviously, they would say you should get it fixed". So my old faulty mid 70's Roost SR100 is now back from the repair shop and it's sounding fantastic. Now, with the knowledge I have picked up from having you two burble away in the background as I play, I'm linking the channels, twiddling the knobs on my old Antoria Jazzstar and I'm getting a simultaneous bottom end growl and chiming top end, just like I always wanted. Anyways, rest assured there are many like me who just want to watch and enjoy what you do, we just don't want to get involved in things like youtube comments sections. The comments section will always be skewed towards the kind of people who leave comments in comment sections. And now because of you I'm one of them....curses. Very much obliged for the tips.
Welcome to the party! I’m somewhat like yourself in that I fairly rarely comment. It always feels a bit like it is a whisper in a thunderstorm. I love this particular channel though for being able to have actual conversations and feeling part of something. I do wonder at the engagement stats on all RUclips videos though; I notice most seem to have about 1/10th the number of likes as views, and 1/10th again the number of comments as likes. Makes you wonder what the other 99% are thinking to themselves whilst watching (well perhaps we know that as we’re more often than not in that 99%!)
Roost for the win! Taff, thanks so much for this. A very dear person to me recently said, ‘remember that I’m the one who never comments’ after I was going through a tough time with the comments. (Mick here btw). We’ve learned to live with it, and it’s not about us ultimately… I guess what I’m trying to say is that feedback like this is just THE BEST. That you’re out there, finding it useful and being inspired to play. That’s a massive win for us! Thank you for committing to the keyboard!
Thank you Euan. Mick here. It’s really easy for us to get caught up in all the engagement stuff as It’s basically the only thing RUclips cares about. But thanks to comments like this and the one from Taff, we are reminded that this channel is not about an algorithm or numbers. It’s about humans playing the guitar and being inspired. Thank you!
Kudos fellas - enjoy every show - this one is a high mark. I would add that in addition to the beautiful guitar work on Crowded House records - anyone interested should check out Split Enz 20th Anniversary Live recordings circa 1992-1993 release. It features Neil's guitar prominently in the mix with stellar performances and great tone. He's generally so busy on every aspect other than guitar it is very rare to find a discussion of such an important part of his music. I think we missed the Mud Honey I could be wrong will go back and check - superb job and cheers.
A great really fantastically informative episode, I really hope every guitarist and many musicians actually watch this and pay attention to what the guitar tech says can be the biggest challenges, myself as a sound engineer, guitar tech and musician for many years knows only to well about how much tone loss is a challenge and happens everywhere in any rig used, length of cables, what one piece of gears output then goes into another piece of gears input, order, power, connectors, different amps, pedals, guitars so many things contribute and change the overall tone. So for so many to think or say why does my pedal or whatever not sound like it did in a demo/review they watched?? Everything changes from one guys rig to another so you have vomit your time to building, working, developing, creating and fault finding to build and customise your own personal rig to create your own personal, individual and desired sound. Be yourself and don’t try and completely emulate another musician from the past like SRV, Hendrix, Page, to name a few. Thanks again a great episode and insight.
Gents, really, really great video. As someone who has never played on stage, and probably never will, this was a great insight into what goes into making the tones we all adore.
Loved this! I was so lucky to get called up on stage to play / sing weather with you with Neil some years ago in Portsmouth. What an amazing man, and a great video. Thank you
Late 1980, I had just turned eleven years old, in rural Alabama, USA. We installed a (massive) satellite dish in our back yard and "One Step Ahead" was the first thing I saw on MTV and I knew then and there I wanted to be Neil Finn. My only disappointment was that wasn't playing guitar, like Lindsey Buckingham, and like I had from the age of 5. He was "just a singer," I thought. But that was okay. I would just have get up my courage to join Lindsey and Neil in the singing department. Then Split Enz Split Up. BUT!!! On my BIRTHDAY in 1986, my world slammed face-first into "Don't Dream It's Over." And of course -- all respect to Tim Pierce's Wilsey-esque contributions -- Neil's guitar changed my life. I already knew by then just what an astonishing player he was. But that sealed it. Top of my list ever since.
What a treat! One of my first vinyl albums was Enz of an Era, bought in the early 80s in Queensland. Loved the Crowded House songs too. So good of these guys to do such a relaxed and candid interview/demo.
Great interviews, totally pro. I could feel a great connection between all of you guys. Thanks for introducing me to some more great music and music history.
Neils lyrics cut straight to the heart in the most unique ways. CH songs are plain beautiful and are timeless. Having a Kiwi mother has helped introduce to them and split enz. Great bands!
I had really no idea Neil had gotten into Gretsches that bad and that 12-string Maton wow. Loved the pedal setups, that htt my GAS badly, I need a Earthquaker pedal. What a generous tour by Marcus, he has a dream job there.
Even with using a 12” cab, it’s even more critical than I could ever know by picking the right speaker. I chased a speaker for a good match for 65’ Reverberocket. I heard something with the first chord but it would fatigue my ears for years and then through suffering/sleuthing, found a large alnico higher wattage from the 50’s and it was special as it allowed the EQ of treble and bass to have a more drastic effect. Weird. Though not unique as I bought another 12” from a close batch from the same year and it kills in a Gibson Falcon. Who knew….I didn’t till I chased my tail. Now chasing the right 10”pairing. Couldn’t have ever knew but time, patience, experience and exploring the equipment and your ear will tell you. The love of my life, my Kiwi wife, will be chaffed with hearing the Finns are still at it. Great show.
IMO, Neil, is the best songwriter working today, so many don't appreciate his guitar work. I liken him to George Harrison, never flashy but always melodic and the guitar always complements the song.
What a pleasant surprise. Still one of my all time favorite bands. I remember being in a band in high school busting into "Something So Strong" off of that iconic album. The kids went nuts. It was, at the time, one of the top videos in rotation on MTV. Nice seeing Neil and the band still making it happen. Thanks for doing this.
Great interview! The rig rundown brought the "gear geek" out of Neil... mostly Liam!!! I'm a massive gear geek and watching this makes me even more proud to be one!
I was kinda hoping Neil was gonna say (just for a Laugh) No bugger off, the Gold Top is in it’s case Dan and not coming back out till the Gig 😆🤣 . and then say nah only joking Dan of course I’ll play it for ya ,and you can have a go on it as well ,there you go Dan, have a play of it yourself 😆🤣.🤣😆👍🏻🌞⭐️❤️😎😆🤣
During the rig rundown I kept expecting John Bohlinger to pop up and say “Hey! Cool Man!”
And what guage strings are those?

I was just in Nashville and had a Bollinger sighting. He was playing in a cover band at one of the bars on the strip.

What an unbelievably edifying rundown...thank you: Marcus Catanzaro and That Pedal Show!
As a kiwi guitarist I really enjoyed every minute of those interactions - thanks so much for bringing that to us. You have to love the self depreciating humour!
Thank you so much for doing this, guys! Neil is one of my all-time favorites!
Yes! That’s a result Peter! So nice to hear proper guitars and amps innit!?
Thoroughly enjoyed this time! Thank you Paul!
I love it that the guitar tech is quoting you guys from the show
Huge Finn fan here and this interview of the gear and with the man himself has me spellbound.
One of my musical heroes for 35 years!
100% agree. Just watching and listening to him made me think about my own setup, how to approach certain challenges.
Thank you so much for this. Amazing gear. Neil Finn, to my ears, is soft of the Beethoven of pop music. Greetings from Montréal, Canada. Merci!
Nice work guys- so good. Neil Finn is a legend 👍👍
I still like Crowded House. I grew up listening to Crowded House ever since 1986 when I was 7 years young when MTV aired music videos. I Love You Crowded House! Crowded House rules!🎉
Private Universe still hits me hard. I’ve been a fan since “Don’t Dream it’s Over” and for a long time Neil has been a touchstone.🎸🇺🇸
thanks guys. he's a hero !glad you got to meet him
Without a doubt, the most informative and enjoyable rig rundown I've ever seen, on any channel. Good on you, boys!
Cheers Dave 👍
This was magic lads! Also nice to see the Finn boys and all the crew you interviewed seem like great human beings!
Thank you for sharing this with us
Just started the video, but man, takes me back to when Time and Tide came out.
Having JUST seen Crowdies last week, I can tell you that I appreciate this episode of PS. Thank you!
Thank you!
And thank you! Great tech chat with Marcus and backed with player run downs by Neil and Liam… glad I woke early and watched this all the way through!
ok, I cried. this is beautiful. Seen Neil Finn a couple of times now but next week will be my first ever Crowded House show
Kudos fellas - enjoy every show - this one is a high mark.
Thank you
Fabulous episode.
What a lovely story. Thank you Kurtis. Nice Tim nod too!
Thank you guys & the incredible Marcus!
@That Pedal Show - Saw Neil and his son after covid with pearl jam. And it is still, Into Temptation.
What a treat! One of my first vinyl albums was Enz of an Era, bought in the early 80s in Queensland. Loved the Crowded House songs too. So good of these guys to do such a relaxed and candid interview/demo.
I"m just reeling! We get to see them this Fall in Nashville @ the Ryman. I just can't wait!! Thank you so much for this show!
Saw them last night at The Fox in Oakland. They sounded great and appeared to really be having fun. Fantastic vocals and harmonies.
Commenting before even watching - this gong to be epic - my favourite band of all time - my favourite song writer of all time - can’t wait for this 👍
I had really no idea Neil had gotten into Gretsches that bad and that 12-string Maton wow.
That was absolutely perfect. Gents, thank you.
Thanks a lot that was amazing , thanks for all that you are doing to bring this wonderful content to us!
Super interesting. Thanks for the video. Excellent
Great interview! The rig rundown brought the "gear geek" out of Neil... mostly Liam!!! I'm a massive gear geek and watching this makes me even more proud to be one!
The trepidation, adulation and boyish glee in the simple sentence 'Could we have a listen to the Goldtop?' was amazing - congratulations Dan!
I felt every inch of Dans boyish glee oozing off the screen as soon as Neil showed up. I have to say..I was right there with him!
I saw crowded house ( the original line up ) on the NSW central coast in the mid 90’s . Still , the best concert I ever saw .
Rewatching this one, it's just so good. I love me some Neil!
Me too⚡⚡
