Don’t Dream It’s Over was the first single I bought with my pocket money as a kid. On vinyl, from Woolworths. I still remember that day getting the bus into Lincoln town centre with my mum. Couldn’t wait to get home and play it. I still have it to this day.
A true class act and a talent treasure -- a musical wonder of the world.
Great interview , such a humble man , you can see how much he still misses Paul 😢
Yeah you sure can. I think it's been about 15 years, but it was clearly a huge loss
Such a talent. I've loved him since 7th grade. There is no better songwriter. He is gifted.
Saw him about a dozen years ago at the Electric Factory in Philly. He had just recorded a Conan episode earlier in the day where LL Cool J was also a guest. Before he started the show he told the crowd that he hasn’t been at this hall in 20 years when CH opened up for Squeeze and then said they were all still alive. In the middle of the show he and his band broke into LL Cool J’s “momma said knock you out”. Classic!! Such a talent.
I really can't choose a favourite, not when all the work is flawless, but I do enjoy instinct, I just came across a box of cds and it was like opening a box of wonderful memories, recurring dream was there and I was YES!! Straight into the stereo and I'm back where it took me yrs ago, when IT rises and hits the reset button, I will be good with my vinyl tapes and cds,
As a longtime American fan since 1980, I think Neil hit on something very important when asked why Split Enz’ sound and look were so “weird”, and that’s that being from NZ they weren’t locked into some regimented notion of what pop/rock music was supposed to look and sound like. Especially back in the 70’s. They were able to develop in an almost hermetic way, and like he said the eclectic influences brought out a very unique and quirky style that to me was such a breath of fresh air at the time. Their particular brand of new wave was quite different from so many of their peers.
The Finns are quite amazing and I’m blessed to be alive and witness their careers.
Distant Sun still has the greatest chord change of all time
Beautifully articulated as always Neil. Thanks for the insightful questions Zane.... and yes, Together Alone, also my favourite...and yes, something magically elemental about wandering around Kare Kare Beach and the house the album was recorded at.
A true treasure. Love Neil Finn.
I was lucky to see Split Enz live, in the early 1980s, before they ended their run. I rank Neil Finn with John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
I always have, too.
I remember seeing Crowded House at Massey Hall in Toronto with Sheryl Crow opening up for them. Great concert. Great memories. Favourite song is Private Universe.
Yeah saw that tour in Roseland NYC
I love how he mentions his "restless nature" and how this seems to be one of the things that keeps him moving. Wow, he's given us such an incredible ride through all the moods and emotions of his songwriting and continually continues to impress us with his amazing songs. Can't believe I've followed his career from when he first joined the Split Enz. And it's been so worth it. It's made my life so much fuller. Thanks Mr. Finn!
Crowded House were a magic band , the imagery their songs conjured up in my mind when i listened to them took me to places id never be able to go to physically. Not many bands can do that. They were and are more than everything ❤
Neil mentions that it’s his favourite album, but Together Alone often seems quite passed over in these retrospectives of his career - but it is a uniquely atmospheric album, a real peak.
Dreamers Are Waiting is fantastic. It just gets better and better upon repeat listens.
"When I see red, I put a handgun under my pillow. When I see blue, I put a blanket over my window."
"There were six of us, but somehow, now there’s 17."
"Never my intention, to create a legend."
"The air is alive. There’s a mob set on violence. There must be a way to escape from the follies of men."
Etc.....
A true songwriting genius!!
Saw them last night in with Liam Finn, Elroy Finn and Mitchell Froon added to the band along with Nick... brilliant 👏 . Still can rock, brood and have fun.
So jealous
2020 Glasgow gig has now been postponed again until 2022 😫 cannot wait , but will at least have the new album to look forward to this summer 😀
I was blessed to see the man with Fleetwood Mac two & a half years ago, performed Don’t Dream It’s Over. I had chills. Pure magic. It was a transcendent experience, and I can die happy.
Jealous! He's a musical hero of mine and that song is evergreen. Tim Pierce's guitar fill coming into the third verse still gives me goosebumps!
Neil is a world treasure of course, but also major kudos to the interviewer; those were some of the best questions I've ever heard.
I'm so glad to hear that Together Alone is Neil's favourite too!
Mine too
I love Crowded House. I can’t wait to see them live in 2022, all things being good!
Hope you got to see them and they were amazing, I got to see them a couple of weeks ago and hands down the best live music I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying.
Wow, cool. My favorite Crowded House album is Together Alone as well (Neil says it's his favorite). I just think the writing, the music composition are his very best collective work. I really love all their albums but Together Alone is top TOP. Loved when Tim joined for Woodface. The music was fantastic and the brothers singing together and collaborating on the music is just something really special. Neil's lyric......… Well, there's a small boat made of china
It's going nowhere on the mantlepiece........sums up the depth of the writing. Neil Finn is definitely my favorite songwriter of the last generation.
My thoughts exactly. I got into Split Enz through True Colours and Waiata. I was greatly disappointed by Time and Tide and gave up on them in about ‘81. I didn’t discover Crowded House until 2000!
Time on Earth was a beautiful and much needed album for all of us that were grieving for Paul. ❤️Together Alone is my favorite. Played Private Universe way too many times and still love it.
Message To My Girl is my fave Split Enz song and Better Be Home Soon is my fave Crowded House song, both of them, even after all these years, still grip my heart like few songs do.
Together alone is not just my favourite album of theirs but also in my top 2 of all time👌
watched them live a couple of nights ago and am pleased to reoprt in 2022, Neil and the current members of CH are still a phenomenol touring band
For me its the Finn Brothers ALbums, some of the best music you will ever hear. Great to hear two kiwis speaking to eachother.
Love this man so deeply.
This is a musical family dynasty that is almost unnoticeably creeping up on the world. A great bunch of very talented family members!!
Just saw them in Toronto. So glad they made it and it felt so warm like we were hanging out listing to a friend play their guitar in front of a camp fire. Hard to describe really. A special night as it was Neil's birthday. Please keep touring!
Brilliant . Loved him in Annie hall....
Neil Finn. In my top 2 GOAT list.
Who's the other?
Neil Finn belongs on the "Mount Rushmore" of melody writers. For me it's Neil Finn, Neal Morse, Paul McCartney and Matthew Sweet.
This interviewer is really fantastic. Great conversation.
I'm Australian and love the place dearly, but if I ever had to choose another homeland, it would be New Zealand.
same
Cheers Frank n Tim, plenty room over here.. Pop over for a cuppa or a grown ups lemonade.
Sir Neil Finn
Yes , would b about time! Plenty less talented been knighted!...
I wish I had seen Spilt Enz!! I was lucky to see Crowded House a few times, but I always missed seeing Split Enz! Neil is a songwriting genius in my book.
Love these guys and all they done. So glad i got to see them live. This is a brilliant idea interviewing and recording info about classics...
Have you checked out the Fangradio podcasts where each album is played and discussed ?
@@christinefitzpatrick7092 not yet no... I will thanks
Cool to see Zane Lowe a kiwi interview a fellow kiwi, Zane would be the best guy to do it as he grew up listening to it on the radio :)
One very unique aspect of Neil's writing is that he can make pop songs with minor chords. There's a delightful spooky quality to it, quite moody,
May 13th 2023. Just saw CW for the 5th time. I so appreciate you taking the time to speak with this ICON. My dad is from Suva City. And when you mentioned on of your podcast how important he is, is said Shaka (Carmel, CA boy). He music is important. And yes, together alone is my fav. Bula!
The tracks out so far for the new record are incredible. Can’t wait for the release .
Neil Finn a genius songwriter
great interview
What a superb music career and body of work!
I just love Crowded House. So glad to see Neil and the boys back making music
'don't dream it's over' is perfect.
What an amazing man. Together alone is my favorite album but some time on earth has just some amazing lyrics and lines. English trees is incredible. Defo my biggest musical influence
Great to see two Kiwis at the top of the music game!
Wait, Zane Lowe is a Kiwi?
@@cosmicgoddess5085 Yep he is!
Most people know Liam’s solo work & his 00’s band Betchadupa .. and Elroy was the drummer for the incredible Neil Finn & Paul Kelly tour & live album, Goin’ Your Way.
Such a great musican/songwriter and a great interviewer.
Pure Gold...
i literally cant stop crying
Time on earth is amazingly sad and reminds me of my sister. Woodface was the happiest time of my fife at school
Just Wonderful, Sir Neil of Finn, and Together Alone is my favourite CH album, maybe....
Six months in a leaky boat video cracks me up to this day, & you ????
You're so cool...very humble man.
Together Alone is on my top 5 lists of albums I"d take with me on a deserted island.
its 2024 and I'm hearing Neil Finn reference Boyz II Men. wow
FANGRADIO!
Snap! Together Alone is my favourite CH album too.
He needs a movie about him
Jason Bateman could play him?
@@bbeacom74 Kane Williamson???
@@bbeacom74 ol Bateman is deffo a likeable chap, but can he do an actual kiwi accent?. Have you considered Martin Henderson?.
Wow, skipped right over Temple of Low Men - my all time favorite CH album. If Something So Strong is a sweet 50’s innocent high school sweet heart love song. Then I Feel Possessed is it’s mature and wiser older brother.
Together Alone is my second favorite CH album.
Wait-what? Did they not talk about Better Be Home Soon?!
Genius
Love the hair Neil lol 😆 👍
Neil’s eyes, are like please don’t ask me about why Matt and Mark are not in the band anymore or any Mark Hart questions 😂
Saw them twice in 87.
Zane knows his stuff
I'm Australian. He is one of the great kiwis and there are lots of them.
🙏🏻🙏🏻
Whoever disliked this needs to do better in life..
What about Boyz II Men? :)
New Zealand national treasure
"What about beethoven? What about boyz II men?"
what’s the song at like 1:08?
Dirty creature... Best split enz song
@@mixmastermootree thanks!!!
Wow man, you totally ignored the Intriguer album, which is arguably the best modern Crowded House album and maybe one of, if not the best ever.
I love all his stuff but for me Woodface was a high point
I’d have chosen “Catherine Wheels” from Together Alone.
Have there been better songs than "She will have her way"?
Not many, if any (Kiwi joke).
That's my daughter's special song! 🤗
Behoven?
Paul Hester's death was tragic.
Love Crowded House and Neil Finn’s music but don’t really like “Don’t Dream”..maybe coz it’s been overplayed on the radio. For me Distant Sun and Fall at your feet take the cake (chocolate cake)…😊
"Where does that come from?" I love Crowded House. I love Don't Dream It's Over. But it's not MAGIC. It's....mostly......luck. Obviously it has to be a good song. But you need access, radio play, some people at radio or today Tik Tok and social media who likes it. Then hard work. But you need ALL this perfectly together. Beatles, Stones, Who. Anyone. It's.....luck. Not magic.
Reuben only good song he wrote rest pap..just saying
Who r you?
