- Non-offending pedophile is a term used to describe an adult who is attracted to children but has never acted on those feelings with a child.
David, a 21-year-old college student in the United States, knows he is attracted to children between the ages of 4 and 11. He’s one of many pedophiles who knows it is wrong, but believes he was born this way, and that with treatment those urges can be controlled.
But to get that help, people like David have to seek it. And in the United States, that comes with huge risk due to mandatory reporting laws that require therapists to report people they deem a risk to children to the police.
Elizabeth Letourneau, director of the Moore Center for the Prevention of Child Sex Abuse, is one of few researchers in the U.S is focusing on preventative measures to help pedophiles.
“Even if you've never offended, if you are sexually interested in children and you reach out to a therapist for help, they may decide that you still represent a threat,” Letourneau said. “And that their concerns meet the threshold for a mandatory report.”
That's not the case at Berlin's "Project Dunkelfeld," one of the only places in the world that offers treatment for pedophiles.

I think it would depend on the person. The risk is the same as a straight man working in an environment with constant interactions with women. To say it's impossible is false... but to ignore the likelihood that at least one of those children will eventually catch a teaching pedophiles attention is also irresponsible on their part. I don't think a pedophile who is self conscious about their sexuality within the context of the society they live in would actively choose to teach minors though. But that's just my opinion.

In that situation you have two grown adults able to take care of themselves and handle themselves through maturity and growth. The other involves a child who is not sophisticated or fully developed yet physically or mentally.
Secondly a male working with females has the liberty of releasing his sexual tensions legally outside of work. A pedophile does not.

@@skeletonjanitor The fact that they are hiding will not put an end to the abuse, indeed most likely the pedophile who does not receive any supervision will be more predisposed to satisfy his desires, leading to more abuses. It is necessary to put the person attracted to children in a position where they cannot harm them and incentivize others who are the same to voluntarily put themselves in that position. In this way, it is possible to effectively decrease abuse and monitor possible predators.
Of course, this does not mean that there won't be several pedophiles who will continue in their disgusting acts. Obviously, they must be harshly punished.
It's really nice and all, however those preventive measures tend to be useless, even quemichal castration somewhow showed to be unefective on pedos, the best way to deal whit them is just giving them a very painful dead, that might disencourage them, I personally think that using pedos to train police dogs would be a solid idea, seems to me a very efficient way to use them, that way your training the police dog's and the taxpayers don't need to spend money on them
As a victim of child SA, I think it’s disgusting how people treat people with these urges who genuinely want help to avoid offending. They need to feel safe to seek help, then fewer of us would become victims
If I went to the dentist and I said I had a toothache and he had to report me because he felt that my other teeth were going to have two things as well that would make no sense if someone is asking for help if someone is saying I feel this way and I need some help and you're going to go ahead and kick them out of the job maybe kick them out of the place they live because you feel that they may be a threat how can I be a threat if they're coming and saying I feel this way I'm not doing anything but I feel this way and I don't want to feel this way anymore so please I need some help and now they get punished for asking for help this does not make any sense to me

Fontana Ceiliosa nope. That’s not what that bill says. It will actually (hopefully) eliminate discrimination against LGBTQ youth, which is a good thing. It’s not a pro-pedophilia bill. With children younger than 14, mandatory sex offender registration is still in place. Before it was passed, an 18 year old that had oral sex with a 17 year old would be forced to register as a sex offender, whereas a 24 year old that had sex with a 15 year old would not automatically have to, as it would be left to the discretion of the judge. The age of consent in California is still 18, meaning that a sex act with someone under that age is still a criminal act.

Imagine being attracted to people that you didn’t want to be attracted to and wanted to seek help but couldn’t because of persecution. Man, we need to make treatment more accessible for these people

I agree, that said I would not consider pedophilia as a normal sexual orientation nor do I think orientation is 100% what you are born with (just about everything is nature AND nurture i.e. genetics AND environment). I think the significant association between being abused and becoming an abuser supports this fact.
It's a fine line between creating an environment/system where people can seek help before they commit these acts without normalizing or excusing them. Personally, I think the US should do a better job on giving people an avenue for help without ruining their life, but I wholly reject the acceptance of pedophilia as part of someone's identity. If someone with clinical depression sees themselves as worthless, we do not accept that as an intrinsic part of their identity, we use CBT to change those thought patterns/perceptions and we need to do the same with pedophilia (among other things).

What a lot of people don't seem to realise is that there is no legitimate way to criminalise sexual attraction, because that would be like criminalising thought itself. As long as there is no act, there is no crime, and a person remains innocent.

Let's say a minor somehow gives consent to an adult, is ready to start their sexual life and that adult is already known by the child's relatives and are convinced that adult is not gonna force that kid if it's too harsh for him or doesn't want to as well as in adult relationships, where no party would ever force the other one into an unwanted intercourse or anything else. I only care about safety, I care less about how that relationship's partners look or sth like that. There’s a difference between “normalize” and “de-stigmatize”. They are not trying to normalize pedophilia. It is a mental disorder, it is not normal. But society needs to be more sympathetic towards a human being asking for help with a problem they have.

When he said _how you feel about women is how I feel about kids_ - that struck him deep. Thank god he hasn't acted on those feelings and I pray he never does. It's just sick. A child can't give you what a consenting peer can.
I feel the reporter was kind unprofessional. Seems like he got assigned this story and didn't really want to do it. He invlude a bunch of his responses that weren't really necessary like lots of gasp and sarcastic laughs ....its like yeah was determined to show the viewes he thinks those he is interviewing are out there or far fetched.
I think he looked quite calm.
The idea is simple: every person who has ever sexually abused a child was first a person who was THINKING about abusing a child. If you recognize that a person does not become a pedophile upon abusing, but long before, then you can reach out and prevent tragedy. The compassionate thing for all parties - both perpetrators and victims - is to recognize the reality of this condition and reach out to the adults experiencing it for help.

These people have the right to receive mental help, but bra, there isn't a chance in hell it should be okay for you to work around children. That's like a person with a history of drug abuse asking to be in control of the Methodone in a drug treatment program. Yeah, no. It's just not reasonable. Therapists are not legally obligated to tell the police anymore for their protection and so they can continue to seek treatment.
This law that was put in place did nothing to stop child sex abuse because I’m Germany child sex abuse is still high.

Probably they just secretly wants the non offending pedo to continue develop the mental illness instead of seeking help. Joke aside, letting them seeking treatment imo is the better option. It might cure them or at the very least help control that urge. If it fails then I'm sure it's not any worse than literally stopping them from getting the treatment that might've help them no matter how small of a chance. But go ahead and threaten them, I'm sure that will totally magically reduce the amount of pedophile.

It's subjects like the one in this video that really show how stupid people are. They don't want to try and help these pedophiles who admit they are pedophiles and want help. People are so damn stupid.
I was sexually assaulted throughout my entire childhood by a family member. The same thing was done to him and his family, society, everything around him shamed him into silence. Silence for his own abuse, silence when having urges to continue the cycle. If mental health was accepted and treatment embraced, would I have suffered? Would he have been able to get help and not offended? The fact that I don’t know the answer to that question will always make me stand up for the right basic of mental healthcare. Someday, the stigma change I fight for will help someone else never have that question.

Well here is the thing, not all who are abused become abusers. They do have a choice and he chose to hurt you. It is sad that he had no one to help him when he needed it. But that does not mean he had so little self control not to hurt you. In fact, because he was abused, that should have completely pushed him in the other direction. He knew what it was like to be vulnerable. He knew what it was like to be powerless. He knew. But he hurt you anyway. We cannot control the people who trespass against us. But we do have control of what kind of person we are. We do have control over our decisions. And you know this because you won't do what he did. That makes you far more stronger than him.

In Australia a sexual predator was active, He abducted and murdered a young girl (Karmein Chan) The police and media called on the public to nominate a suspect and remain anonymous. 27,000 men were named. (Including myself) 73 of these were charged with an offence (not connected to the abduction and murder) 73 in 27,000 is about 1/4 of 1% so that suggests how easy it is to be falsely accused. Police came to my house to question me. Then one policeman walked straight past me, said "what's in here" then started searching my house" He looked through cupboards and boxes it seems trying to find dirt on me. Then they kept asking where I got things in my house, motorbike parts, cans of food etc. Then they asked about a typewriter. I said I bought it from the school where I worked. The police said they suspected it was stolen and they would contact my work. They contacted my work about the typewriter then asked questions relating to the abduction and murder. Police say an anonymous person wrote to them saying I should be investigated. I was not allowed to know what was said about me so it is hard to defend myself. To even be investigated can turn people against you. As a MAP myself, it's important to discuss the subject, warts and all (and there are many). Programs like Project Dunkelfeld are a beacon of hope for many, many people, and I hope one day they can become the norm. To other MAPs or questioners lurking in this comment section: it'll be okay. You have full control over your actions and the kind of person you want to be.

I was sexually abused as a child. The abuse lasted for years. I support mental health care for people who recognise they have a desire to molest but know it's wrong. Saying paedophiles should be killed is stupid, selfish and overly simplistic. It's obviously not going to happen and shouldn't happen to those who want help to prevent themselves causing pain. Most people would rather be angry and self-righteous than actually do anything to help reduce the number of kids who are victims. In order to actually reduce molestations, you have to treat people before they act. Saying you want to kill them only makes them go underground where they cannot get help. You're keeping the cycle of abuse going if you oppose therapy for people with these urges. It's a difficult subject but one everyone needs to be informed about. If people with these urges could get treatment without fear of violence or discrimination, we would see sex crimes against children drop. Obviously no one with those feelings should be around children, and I agree with proposals to ban them from certain types of employment where they would supervise kids.

I agree that pedos should not work with children. just as we ban offenders from doing so, it probably makes sense to preemptively ban nonoffenders - the problem would be determining the thresholds for that. Because i'm not sure it makes sense to discourage these nonoffending people from speaking up for fear of losing their jobs or no longer being able to go to the park or something. they'll just keep it to themselves then when they really should be erring on the side of seeking treatment. and how are they being diagnosed? does a single random thought qualify? aren't we relying on them to self-report? jumping to automatic bans can be just as problematic as jumping to "kill them all"

The sentiment shared among people in my country (the U.S.) is generally that pedophiles should be immediately murdered. The stigma is so strong, people I personally know continue their addictions in silence because they would rather that than be branded an addict. I must admit that I do feel sorry for people like this. They have done nothing wrong but are forced to live with these sexual urges towards children, which they have no control over. There are probably a lot of people like this, attracted to children but never committed any actual crimes, but are too scared to get help due to the risk of being reported to the police, being found out and disowned by their friends and family and being made an outcast in society.

I think a good comparison is how we treat murder. I have had patients call 911 when they they are having homicidal urges, and we treat them as patients rather than murderers. I think offerinf preventitve treatment might be worthwhile to prevent future incidents of child abuse.
That said, i don't think i agree with the doctor's notion that pedophile should be considered as a sexual orientation rather than a disease to be corrected.

Andrew M I wasn’t familiar with that particular study before looking it up just now, but from what I’ve read, it seems that that particular study was conducted based on 52 participants who were prior sexual offenders. If this is not the study you are referring to, or if I am mistaken, please refer me to what you are referencing. As someone with a degree in abnormal psychology, and also a victim of child sexual abuse, this is a subject that has always been of particular interest to me. However, I have never come across any literature that has suggested that the rate of attraction to children among males is anywhere near that high.

I don't like how they perceive mandatory reporting as a problem. A therapist cannot protect children in danger if they are not allowed to report their clients. Mandatory reporting has 100% saved many many children who would've been victims.
You didn't think hard enough before posting this. While mandatory reporting laws alone are not the problem and can save people from harm, what IS a problem and creates harm is that these standards are not clear and concise as to what constitutes a need for a mandated report. Unfortunately there are no detailed established standards to this. The only thing therapists are told is to report clients whom they feel are at imminent risk of hurting themselves or others and they have a victim and plan. Other than that they leave it entirely up to the therapist to set their own mental thresholds as to what constitutes this criteria. This can mean that even if a person has never hurt a child in their life and vows right to this therapist not to ever, just this therapist hearing a client admit to thoughts of attraction to children alone could mean he/she decides to go off the popular stigma and/or fears about the condition and deems this person as an automatic threat to children and thus reports this person, breaching confidentiality, for their thoughts alone. This can basically lead to the rest of their life being utterly destroyed for not even doing anything wrong. Ironically this is the very reason that for basically every other situation, confidentiality is so important in the field of therapy. Yet for this extremely stigmatized group of people, they may need it most. (Unless of course they have a specific plan to hurt a child or have acted on it)
Honestly I feel sorry for these people. Clearly they want help to get better and instead of ostracizing them we as a society should help them get the treatment they need just like any other mental illness before they become actual offenders.

I would not say that it would ever be OK to have them work around children but you cannot ignore that they are seeking help instead of acting on these urges. I will say, relying on the patients for their statistics is insanity according to me.

It’s a sick sad situation all around. I was watching a segment where a teenager said told his parents that he was attracted to little children and wanted to seek help because he knew it was not “normal” The medical system as it is now is not set up to handle this. Many psychs refused to help.
Very common story unfortunately. I know of one 18-year-old who asked his parents to find a counsellor for him, without saying why. After he told the counsellor that he was a non-offending pedophile, she immediately left the room and broke doctor-patient confidentiality to tell his parents.
Some counsellors and psychologists have phoned the police, under the mistaken impression that they were required to by law.
It's no wonder these individuals are scared and reluctant to get help and support. Fortunately things are starting to improve, with organisations who can refer pedophiles to therapists who specialise in this, and some counsellors running online sessions.
But if you are a professional, there are dangers for you too. You could be attacked by vigilantes. One counsellor I used to know was targetted by online trolls who called CPS on her. It's a terrible situation and I thank Vice for dealing with this topic sensibly.

I love these slippery slope fallacies in the comments saying that this is normalizing or saying it’s okay. The difference between this and let’s say homosexuality is when two consenting adults of the same gender have sex, no one is harmed (unless std’s etc). But if an adult does so with a kid, it causes severe harm and irreparable damage to the kid physically and mentally. So no it will never be normalized the way homosexuality is. The best way to stop it is to recognize it at its roots and make these people seek help. Otherwise they’ll stay silent and be far more likely to offend.

As soon as I hear someone’s sob story I just feel so bad even if they’ve done things that should make me despise them, and that makes me easily manipulated. it's really hard to offer help when many pedophiles are secretly offending. I read a study on no contact offenders saying they've never touched a child, but after building trust with a therapist for months, they've admitted to traumatizing many kids. I felt sympathy for pedos before due to how taboo it is to properly discuss their issues but, I haven't been the same since finding out about this. It's truly sad.

I don't get downvoting this video. This is educational and informative + could potentially prevent someone from committing a crime if they can get the help they need. If you care about protecting children, you have to support getting help for the people born with this orientation.

No one is blaming people who are uncomfortable to have their kids around pedos. What OP is saying is that it's counterproductive to lock these people up when they seek help because then potential offenders are gonna see getting help as a one way ticket to an early death or being locked up. We need these people to open up about their illness and seek help so their desires won't win them over. There isn't a "treatment" for disorders that occur developmentally.
