DIY Bike Trailer Camping

- My friends and I built a tiny camper that can be pulled by an e-bike and I took it out camping. The total build weighs approximately 160 pounds and I pulled it with an off the shelf 250 watt bike. Many improvements to come but this was a first test camping trip for it.

I laughed out loud when I saw Steve took up 1/4 of his camper for a popcorn machine... Then I laughed even louder when the hotdog maker came out too! 🤣
Doesn’t everyone camp that way 😉
Same, hilarious 😂 love it.
I once hiked 4 hours up a mountain then pulled out a Monopoly game. I think my friends wanted to kill me, but there we sat in a high Alpine area playing Monopoly.
I’m still wheezing. Man has got priorities!
@@campingwithsteve I used to take a window air conditioner for my tent when camping in the desert.
Hey Steve idk if you’ll even read this but I just wanna let you know that you’ve helped me get through bad times. My mother died the same week you lost your wife and seeing you stay so positive and upbeat really gave me the strength and confidence to stay strong. Love all the videos ❤ and keep up the amazing work
I’m sorry for your loss and so glad my videos could help in some way.
Hello Steve, I've enjoyed your videos for a few years I love the build and I would suggest you put a 500 W front wheel kit. Sorry for your losses over the years... keep on hunkering down
"You know what happens when you assume? You reach a logical conclusion based on the information you have on hand. " 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 man, that killed me.

Crazy Neighbor would have loved that camper!
I have a strong feeling that it came up in discussion between them at least once!!!
yes and he would have been the first to help😂🥰😇

I strongly believe, Crazy Neighbour had some kind of soul inspo from the other side. Laughing his a$& off with a few step twos on hand. 😂😂😂😂

The fact that I’ve heard the term “glizzy” come from Steve has made my entire month 😂
Steve, please understand, ALL of your content is 'regular content'. That's what we admire about you. You take 'regular' to new levels. Give yourself a break. You bring a lot of joy to a tremendous amount of people. Most of us would happily watch a video of you just walking around yapping. You are society's medicine. 90% of humans would be better off with a dose of Hunkering Down.

I have no shame in admitting that I have a deep parasocial relationship with Steve. As someone who has also gone through a lot of hard losses, Steve is that sign to keep moving forward.
I love Steve and I don't care who knows it.
Impossible not to love this guy
He's a champ for sure.
Great comment .😊Hunker Down!
Same here, many losses. Steve has helped me change my mindset, to try and still enjoy your days, somehow. Onwards and upwards.

Hey Steve! Before you patch up that hole there in the front, consider mounting a PC fan or something similar in it to get some airflow in there.
Upvote so he can see this!
I only recently stumbled across Steve and his camping adventures.
What a lovely, genuinely heart-warming chap.
The appeal is Steve regardless if you like stealth camping.
I often refer to my wife as "beautiful wife"

Can't imagine what you've been through brother.
Hats off to carrying on and being you.
You're a true inspiration.

Time for a step two ❤
Hot dog cooker and a popcorn machine???
Can’t confuse this adventure with some minimalist bushcraft adventure!!!!
Love it Steve!!!!
You’re a freaking legend Steve. We all missed you.
Amen!❤
All I can think of, is how proud and excited Crazy Neighbour would be to see you doing this 😁😊
You cracked me up when you started pulling out a popcorn popper and a hotdog warmer. Solar panels could fit on the roof. A 12-volt NiCad battery in the overhang space. Foam panels for insulation in the walls and ceiling. A small 12 v fan for air circulation on the ceiling corner.
Nothing on youtube brings me as much joy as you do Steve!
When life throws you some terrible times, you stand back up, brush yourself off, get back on the bike with the Hunker Down trailer attached, and go camping.
Thank you, Steve, for being an inspiration.

Can’t wait to see more of the mini Hunker Down trailer. So friggin’ awesome!
Oh, there’ll be more…😉
Welcome back Steve! We're all glad to see you back at it!
Thanks, Andy!
Hey Steve, just a suggestion maybe have the back of the rv be a door that cant open upwards ( with a pole thats attached in the mid, left or right so it can stand and be used as a rain/shade cover. Then the litte hatch can be a emergency exit & have a white sheet cover the storage part so you can still watch movies 👍👍
Just when you think Steve has done it all, he constantly keeps coming up with new ideas 💡 💡 💡 💡 💡 💡
My man is single handedly saving RUclips
Steve - this one is going up there with the roundabout video! Man, you never fail to amaze. Your grief over the last 2 years has been staggering and just one of those losses is enough to put a good man down. Yet you keep on pulling yourself back up and dusting off. And getting back at it. Better and stronger than before. You’re a true inspiration and role model, my Canadian friend. I just know that Crazy Neighbor’s up there teaching Beautiful Wife and Mamma Wallis how to build a treehouse. On a boat. Most of us are lucky if we have one guardian angel. I’m pretty sure you have three. Love ya man ❤
love your comment.
@@rosehatter2 thank you so much - Steve was the inspiration
Steve I've watched your channel for years now. The only other person I've heard say hunker down as much as you was my dad. Watching your videos always reminds me of him. Thanks for doing what you do. Love ya man ✌️
Use plastic corrugated board (plastic cardboard) for the interior. It has rigidity while being lightweight and cleanable.
It is great to see you Steve.
What this guy said.
yes glad he doing great❤
Crazy Neighbor is smiling down from paradise😊
Very cool and very promising. Two thoughts:
(1) The 2x4 lumber that thing is made of adds up to a lot of weight. You're pulling around a trailer load of lumber. I'd try some kind of much lighter supports. Plastic piping might work. Maybe as hoops to reduce weight even more. Lightweight aluminum "girders" might work even better because they'd be light and strong. Larger sheets of foam board that can stand up without so many interior supports will reduce weight even more. You might try making one or more walls purely of fabric you stretch between two supports. That's how tents are made to be so light. Bending a kind of waterproofed foam board roof into a long curved shape front to back from which two lightweight fabric sides hang down aattached (by zippers? snaps?) would be extremely light, almost like pulling a tent. And leave out all the boxes, shelves, and other nonsense you do not need.
(2) Those small wagon wheels are very inefficient and require much more energy to rotate than larger diameter narrower wheels. And they will handle badly. That's why bikes have larger diameter narrow wheels. I'd remove them and find a way to attach two bicycle or similar wheels, the lighter the better. Fixing a pair of them to an axle underneath might be possible if you don't mind the trailer sitting up a foot higher. Or put the wheels only at the back end and let the front end ride on the trailer hitch attached to the bike. Pulling that heavy thing on those small wheels is going to be slow and exhausting.
for number2 it would be nice for mobility issues. Also why dont put motors on the trailer and sync them with the bike. At least i dont think that rules mention about trailer wattage.
with a bigass battery that can be charged at home or campsite he can go pretty far.
Lost my sister to horrible circumstances years ago. Appreciated all the support friends and loved ones sent my way. Gritted my teeth and gave a diplomatic nod to those (albeit well meaning) saying "I know what you're going through". They don't, we're all different, handle and process things in our own ways. So I can't begin to pretend I know how you cope with the amount of tragedy thrown your way recently Steve. Just glad to see your back bud. Your the most genuine dude on RUclips.
I was hoping he'd do a bikepacking trip and he delivered. Once again he is the MAN, and I hope he knows how many folks pray for him, daily.
just needs a solar panel and he's all set for that one actually
100% agreed!
Amen. 🙏🏼
you could just glue some fabric on the walls if you wanted to decorate the inside.
Amen
Steve honors the tradition of not only stopping at lemonade stands but letting them keep the change. His kindness and resilience is inspiring. Hunker down, Steve!
I noticed that and thought it was sweet too 😊
Steve could start a bonfire with a single match but at times has chosen a propane tank . He brings hot dog heaters and pop corn makers in his wee trailer. This is why we love him. Now you’re camping with Steve enjoy a step two cunce. Slainte
Thankful you are back. Hopefully you understand what you mean to the "Hunker Down" masses. The simple, no guile approach uplifts everyone and makes their day better.
"It's not ugly but it could be beautiful!" (Wallis, 2024). Quote of the century!☺
I heard another camper quote the other day 'don't confuse comfort for happiness' that one, is underlined on my quote board! It totally resonated when I heard it.
It was a wonderful quote
I wonder how many people tell that to themselves before getting cosmetic surgery.
the comically small wheels make it look so silly

Steve telling the newbies, "it gets weirder than this!" made me smile. Steve pulling out fair food paraphernalia made me laugh. The whole video made me happy!!
Some people’s heroes wear capes. Mine wears his heart on his sleeve, a step two in his right hand, bear spray in his left…And the courage of a giant in his heart. Hunker down my hero! Let’s kick this next adventure in the ass! I’m right there with you. I’m thinking’ I’m not the only one….Let’s ride
The production quality is chef's kiss. Loved the drone angles. Keep getting better Steve
Just a little advice from someone who has a E bike with a trailer. Thousands of miles on the road. Whatever your mileage max is on your e-bike, cut it in half with a trailer. That way you won't be stranded. Awesome video, keep them coming, buddy. 🎉
Where i live the limit is 250 watts! Much pedal assist...

You are the best, Steve. If I were 30 years younger... LOL But really, you are smart, kind, and have a great sense of humor. What more could a woman want?
Does anyone else want a e-bike and a camper for it after watching this? Or just me? Great video as always Steve!
I do! Just rode one for the first time in the mountains in TN while camping. They are awesome. I am getting an E-Bike and a little camper on the back would be so cool!!

I want to build a trailer a little longer. I've riding a RadRover ebike since 2018. I see weigh as the biggest hurdle. Plus thieves...
Prefer gas power but yes.
Favorite line, " so there's a very happy looking crow flying around that is likely full of buns." I love it. 😅❤
That was my third out loud belly laugh. Hahaha
"I think we're supposed to call them glizzys"

@@orreongman lighten up man. no need to be bigoted. its just a funny term kids these days like to use :)
How about we not take our cues from children. It's one thing if a kid says it, but a grown man should be articulate and not dumb down his speech. @@carnigob42069
Steve use 1 1/2" rigid foam for the inside walls. That should flush up with the framing and then staple cloth onto the walls for a finish. Clean finish for the inside and very well insulated to boot.
Edit:
Put a small towel bar above your screen window and drape a towel as a blind. Towels have a myriad of uses in a camper. Also remember to distribute the load in the trailer equally, important in a lightweight trailer configuration
I'd even leave some/most of the framing "studs" bare, for future hanging/storage...
Great to see you again. Enjoy this beautiful Spring weather.
Thanks.
Look forward to doing this myself one day. Gonna miss wondering when Crazy Neighbour will pop up again, RIP Glen. Petition: call this little contraption 'the crazy camper'!
I love it!
What a lovely idea 😊
Yes!!
Welcome back Steve Crazy neighbor is behind you with arms in the air.
This little trailer just has Crazy Neighbor written all over it.
Paint the framing a light colour, get a windshield sun shade, cut it to fit your windows, fasten it top frame (stapled)? roll when not using. Small led lights stringed would work well. That hole in the top section , the failed 5th wheel thing, put some plexiglass to cover taking advantage of the light coming from it. Any cabinets etc built inside use pocket jig for screwing together, it’s strong but can be used with lighter wood. Enjoy. Glad to see you having fun.
Shopping for beer with a bicycle helmet on. Classic Steve.
We missed you Steve!
I had to pause the video to show my husband that you brought a popcorn maker and a hotdog cooker in your bike trailer! You are an absolute legend! So great to see you this week!

I am in a similar spot, Steve. Your perseverance is truly inspirational to me. Thank you for everything you do. I would watch you cook beans on your stove at home. You mean so much to so many. Sorry for your losses, but thank you for your courage.
I think maybe if the back opens up as a whole it could work better? Also some reflective tape or hazard tape on the back for traffic approaching from the rear. Love the build.
You could install a recessed LED light in the hole of the overhang. It’ll seal the hole and provide outdoor lighting for more “activities”! Keep up the great work!

Yall don't understand just how unique and versatile a E-Bike camper is! Steve you could trade mark one of these and mass produce them. I bet this would be a game changer for homeless people
Get yourself a ceiling storage net Steve that hangs from the ceiling inside the camper. Plenty of space to store stuff without adding hardly any weight.
Maybe some foamcore for the interior walls (light weight and "some" insulation.)
Good to see Steve brought only the necessities to keep the load light. Foam mattress, camp chair, stripped down interior, commercial hot dog machine and pop corn popper. You know, it makes total sense. That was totally AWESOME!!! Thanks , Steve!

Flip down bed from the side wall so it's the full length of the space you have, and it you wanna get really creative put a wall mounted PC monitor in the back corner for those rainy days, as for a kitchen.........keep the cooking outside, don't want to be cooking where ya sleep .
