I don't know what is worse: the fact that the sheriff even said this, your support for his saying it, or the fact that you don't see what's wrong with it.
All his statement has done is show a dishonest unwillingness to assess the situation at hand: that sex offenders had served their time, some unfairly so, and should be given the right to properly reintegrate back into society as productive citizens, so that they don't repeat their old criminal ways.
Sweeping an issue under the rug doesn't nullify that the issue is still there
If Lord forbid your own beloved male family member got placed on the registry, deserved or not, and he struggled his after-prison life away trying to maintain even a meager existence, I hope you have the nerve to tell him to "[not] be a sex offender, if [he doesn't] want to be on the sex offender list."

His response is his opinion and he has the right to. However tax payers do not elect sheriffs to be the judge or jury. He doesn't get to decide if someone that committed a sex offense gets a slap on the wrist or not, the legal system decides that. I think police need really have that drilled into their head because, too often they believe they get to hand out a sentence.
You can’t rehabilitate someone who will not admit what they’ve done.

What is concerning is that there is not a “murderer” registry. Someone could be released after killing someone, move next door to your family, and you will NEVER know unless they tell you
Abolish the registry
Because, for instance, there is a difference in being put on a registry for murder when it was a crime of passion than if you were put on a registry for a crime of passion with a minor.

DNA isn't foolproof (though usually "good enough"), and eye-witnesses are _notoriously unreliable_ and that's just when third-parties witness something, let alone actual victims, especially victims of this, which usually make a point of looking away or closing their eyes; they don't normally look the attacker in the face and make eye-contact. Not to mention the race-blindness. Chances are he's guilty, but it's hardly a demonstrable fact.

That includes mental health therapy (sex offender therapy program).
If they pass, allow them to re-establish their life back into society in a positive way.
If they fail the treatment program, toss them back into prison.

Most people don't think like you unfortunately. They don't want to actually try and fix the problem, so abuse doesn't happen again, or even in the first place. I want free school lunches and more after school programs, I want kids to not be forced into vulnerability either through poverty or a latch key kid because their parents work 3 jobs, or both. Focusing on mental health and having the hard and uncomfortable conversations about the real reasons people commit crimes of all kinds, and surprise, the majority of crimes are not committed for the sake of being evil. They are committed because someone didn't get the early intervention, and mental health support they needed.

What the cop said "don't commit sex offences if you don't want to be on the register " is exactly how I feel about them too. If you've done the crime then it's too bad if people stigmatise you, because, you can be sure, your victims will have to live with your actions for life, so why are you wanting special treatment? They are not babies and are not usually mentally ill, they know what they are doing is wrong, so they should just grow up and accept the punishment. I am sure their victims don't want to hear about their housing problems and neither do the majority of the public. If you cannot do the time, don't do the crime! Of course, I am not speaking about people who were convicted for oral sex and digital penetration at age 15, but, as I write this I am thinking how old was the victim, as this is what will define this crime. I think there should be clear distinction between the types of crimes and I get the feeling that she's playing down his crime and the inconsistencies in the register. I really don't think you get on the register accidentally, I think you have to have been proved a danger. I really think she's trying to downplay the importance of these rules and, I wonder, if she would feel the same if she'd been a victim.

There really are people on the registry who were falsely accused and wrongly convicted or something less serious like peeing out in the public.
But why do we have a registry for sex offenders if not for every other kind of offense?
I'm pretty sure there are different levels, or tiers, of the SOR, from low-risk to high-risk in terms of danger to the public.
Unfortunately, being on that list at all is incredibly stigmatized, so yes, someone who's a Tier 1 (the least risk to the public, if I remember correctly) for urinating in a park at night or maybe for sexting with their teenage partner (if both are teens) is looked at with as much disdain and hatred as the Tier 4 (highest risk I think) who raped and killed someone.
I'm not sure what the numbers are in terms of how many people account for which tier levels, but the fact that there's a wide range of offenses on that list can be problematic all around.

There are people like that who are registered sex offenders, too. I know an excellent mother who can’t go to her kids’ school because she was an alcoholic . She peed in the alley more than once, because she had a weak bladder and impaired judgment. I saw her paperwork.

@@seankelly378 Why not try actually looking at your local registry it shows the crimes they were convicted and put on the registry for... I almost guarantee you will be hard pressed to find many if any of those types of cases around you. Most of them have horrible cases with extremely young victims a lot of them multiple victims and convictions.
Maybe 1% of people on the registry are on there for undeserved things like public urination. Within 50 miles of my house I can only find one person who maybe shouldn't be on there because he was 21 and hooked up with a 17 year old. The rest all very much deserve to be on there and many don't deserve freedom or even air for that matter...

I felt so bad for his victim when she cried because he still hasn't excepted responsibility for his assault on her even though there was DNA! If anything his story proves that most sex offenders can't be rehabilitated!

My daughter was raped when she was 14 years old. I was not informed about the prediters fate. No registry at that time and he was shielded from me and the public at large. She is still negatively affected as an adult . A life sentance for her. Life sentance for affenders is appreciate for sure.

im normally on the side of VICE, but as someone who lived through sexual violence, I have very little pitty for these people. It's been nearly 12 years and i still go to therapy. My life has never been the same. I live with PTSD, Depression, and perpetual anxiety, which are medicated. I struggled to stay afloat financially because of my inability to keep a job for a prolonged period of time. I even attempted suicide twice.
I've forgiven the actions of the man who wronged me, but I don't think he should be allowed to live a normal life after that, and I know there are some who are wrongly charged and put on that list and i feel for them, but if you commit the crime, you must be willing to accept the consequences. I had no choice, why should you?
I 100 percent agree with you if they cant afford the 100 dollars to register i think its alright for them to stay in prison honestly but for people who were just accused i think it could be overwhelming i honestly think we should just send them to an island and let them battle it out

Because murder can be justified or accidental in some cases, self defense and manslaughter for example. Sex crimes can’t. Even among other criminals, They will house sex offenders in the same area and put them in protective custody In prisons because the risk of them being attacked or killed by the other inmates is extremely high.
It may sound draconian, but once someone has committed these kinds of crimes, you really can't trust them anymore. False convictions are another issue. What I am addressing here is that it probably would be better in everyone's interest if they were just executed, once enough evidence of their crime has been obtained. Very few want these people in society. I think people are just afraid to pull the trigger.

I was not prepared for the interviewer to tell the victim that her abuser said she is lying….who said this was a good idea? This is so damaging to a victim’s mental health and THEN you’re trying to help him? That was a low blow to me. It hurt my feelings when she started cry. She seemed okay until she told her that piece of information.

I don't condone this behavior, an ex psycho colleague of mine just got caught with child pornography and I knew something was deeply wrong with him, he was a psycho with me too when he was department head.
So I have direct experience of people like these. But it is scary to think people that did something wrong and want to get back to society and redeem themselves basically almost cannot given all these restrictions. Also, consider that a lot of these safety measures are really "safety theater". We have a lot of supposed safety measures in society that do almost nothing besides giving the illusion of safety and politicians use them to get support. If a predator wants to do something bad he will not care about these restrictions and do it anyway.
But if somebody wants to change his life after having been in prison for years and years basically he cannot given he cannot find a job, a place where to live, and so on. This actually could make society much less safe. There are several studies showing that rehabilitation helps much more than punishment and crazy restrictions like these.

As the cop noted one is the child pornography laws which means a lot of people simply by sitting alone in their home can commit a sex crime and even be labeled a predator. I've worked with teens who were offenders and the number one problem is what we called "thinking errors" like denial or gaslighting. This dude was never wrong. All his problems were from the system and his lying victim. He feels entitled and aggrieved; there's no awareness of the sexual assault as problematic. These are red flags in all caps.

People like this should not be placed on the same list as someone who sexually abuses ten year olds. People aren't going to ask him why he is on the registry, they just see him in the registry and assume that he is a child molester. My roommate was sexually assaulted by her step-father from 6 years old to 13. He only got 6 years in prison. She's 53 now and still has nightmares, anxiety, and has been going to therapy all these years. It doesn't help.
@patricia Manroe - please tell your roommate to look into EMDR therapy (assuming she hasn't already). My situation was very similar to hers - I was molested by my step-father from as young as I can remember (2 or 3 maybe?) until about 12 - when I told my mother what happened. He was never arrested (my mom didn't call the police) and never convicted, spent a single day in prison. I, like her, was in therapy for my entire adult life. Age 47, I started doing EMDR therapy and it changed my life. All the best to her - and you!

We need more willingness among parents and teachers to discuss sexual violence with students, not only seeing them as potential victims, but as potential offenders. We need to spell out for them the LONG term consequences of commiting an offense, as well as the LONG term harm to the victims.

The only care or treatment for sex offenders tends to be *after* they've already offended. Something needs to change so that people can come forward to seek help *before* offending without being turned away or locked up or something.
Of course not all of them see a problem with their behavior, but that's another reason for more accessible therapy, especially for children and young adults.
As someone who works with S.O.s and have my degree in criminology (and also a victim) YES 10000% this. Early intervention is HUGE. And yes, it would mean work in somewhat normalizing getting S.O. treatment.

My biological father has been trying to reconnect with our family over the years. He raped and molested me for years as a kid, and although I'm in my 30s and have been living my life (also thanks to lots and lots of therapy) I don't care if adult family members chat with him or reconnect, but if I went somewhere and he was there then I'd leave and only cause an issue if there were any of my nieces or nephews there. But from what I've heard from my siblings, he's been trying to reconnect with them for almost 20 years and the only thing I had to say to my sister was that she better not ever leave him around her kids and if she ever does choose to introduce them then someone needs to be watching every single interaction like their life depends on it because in my opinion no one's guard should ever be down around him, especially when there's kids around.
He's been complaining about how he's not able to ever see or get to know his grandkids, he's been isolated from his family...etc. If someone wants to have contact with him then that's on them and they're living their life their way. I'd still likely have contact with that family member but I'm not going to have contact with him.

A friend of mine since jr high is labeled a "sex offender" for having sex with his girlfriend when he was 18 and she was 17. He's not a predator, he's not creepy. They thought they were in love. But he's on the registry as a "sex offender".

I used to have a really harsh view of sex offenders. After watching this documentary however, I have an even harsher view of them.
Serious sex offenders who are convicted with strong evidence should be locked up for life.
Most pedophiles have molested not just one but multiple times with many victims who are left with a life sentence of coping with many emotional and mental issues. There are so many perpetrators out there who never get reported and repeatedly offend. I have no sympathy for them if they are caught and don’t believe they can be rehabilitated.

I don’t completely disagree. My only issue though is why let them out of jail if they can’t get a job and a house? Either let them out and have their freedoms back, or leave them in there longer.
A LOT of people can't get a job or a stable living situation right now, these individuals aren't special in that regard. And there's no moral law that says people who commit egregious crimes against their fellow man, particularly crimes that weren't driven by poverty and necessity (such as sex crimes) are somehow entitled to an easy route to making a life for themselves after prison. Things are hard for EVERYONE right now. Things are probably hard for their victims as well. Truth be told, many of the things these offenders are whining about, victims of SA go through routinely throughout their lives due to extreme trauma and the mental disabilities it causes. Go into any homeless shelter, and you'll likely meet people, especially women, who've been victims of SA in childhood as well as throughout multiple periods in their adult lives and it's greatly affected their ability to hold down a job and keep stable housing. Then throw drug addiction into the mix, and things get even more difficult. These people also struggle with getting the services they need to have a stable life for themselves, and they're often thrown in jail for non violent crimes which only makes their ability to reintegrate into society even harder. These are the people I, and most of American society should care about as far as this broken system is concerned. The people who were dealt a horrible hand in life and were abused beyond mention, but have never hurt anyone other than themselves as a result. People who deliberately harm others through nothing other than their defective sexual deviancy really shouldn't be high up on anyone's list of priorities regarding their lack of ability to make a life for themselves.

I knew it, the landlord knew it, but proving it in a court of law would be another thing. I think the presentation of this is skewed, the section about Geoff for example casually mentioned that he was convicted of not just a sexual offence but also 'soliciting her murder' - I'm sorry but, that's not a small thing? Are we supposed to be feeling sorry for him? Let's not use the word 'stigma' about sex offences and murder - we are not in the wrong for feeling wary of these people, they are not the victims of an undeserving stigma here.
I was like, wait what? with that, too. (The murder thing.) I am aware that there are people who are against the registry and think it's unfair, awful, inhumane, etc. So, I guess that's the stance this documentary was attempting to take. Ironically though it only seemed to confirm that the registry is needed. There was nothing compelling in here to show me that that the registry is exceedingly unfair. And I'm even on the open-minded side of having sympathy for what perpetrators probably went through in their own childhoods. etc. Maybe I can see that more services could be put in place to help find housing immediately after prison, or to help with the transition from prison to out-of-prison (like bus tickets to rural areas or something). Buuuut other than that, this doc did the opposite of convincing me the registry is wrong.

But, I think people don't realize that you could be put on a sex offender registry by for example, peeing in public, being 18 and having a girlfriend that is 17, flashing your tits at a concert, car sex, etc.

People who commit sex offenses have done a TERRIBLE thing, but the idea that people have to pay their time and then move on is impossible when even after they leave jail it is impossible for them to get a job, find housing, or be seen by the community as anything other than disgusting. Human beings deserve life, the chance to live and thrive even after doing terrible things. If you deny someone their humanity, you don’t help their victims, you simply destroy the perpetrator. I'm in my 20s now but was sodomized by my grandpa for two years when I was growing up. It's not only affected my life (hours of therapy, the need for many specialized services, etc) it's affected my family even more. My dad has tried to commit suicide two times due to his depression and guilt, my mom has had a difficult time holding down a job, etc. It's been a huge challenge for my family to deal with everything. Its really shocking to hear that the interviewer seems to feel that sex offenders are being treated poorly.

It’s an every day struggle. The pain of knowing that someone hurt me so much as a child and is now all coming back to me in flashbacks. The fact that I didn’t know I was living with OCPD in response to childhood trauma and I never know what can trigger a flashback memory and send me back into panic mode. I don’t trust anyone. I’m overprotective with my kids. I have such a huge effect on everyone around me. It’s just consuming and exhausting. I live in a mental jail because of what someone like one of these monsters did to me.

There was a news story about an 18 year old dating a 17 year old which is legal but sending nude photos of each other back and forth was illegal. The 18 year old was convicted of a sex crime against a minor and had to be on the registry.
I’m assuming cases like that is what she was referencing.

I think there should be varying levels of punishment for different sexual offenses. Anything regarding children should be life in prison but there are men who are 20 or 21 on the list who messed up with their 17 year old girlfriend and now have their entire life ruined. for me there is a bit of nuance- when i was 17 i had an 18 year old boyfriend and we sexted one time (i was the one who initatied the conversation) everything was totally consensual. i dont think he should go to jail since there was no pressure from either person. technically i would also get arrested for the production and sharing of underage photos

You guys need to fire this sex offender apologist journalist. The way she really tried to defend them every step of they way is absolutely disturbing and disgusting. Are the laws flawed in some ways? Yes I’m sure they are. Are people falsely accused? I’m sure that happens. As far as every other offender who has been accused with irrefutable evidence; like that officer said, if you don’t want to be on the registry than don’t commit a sex offense.
While I agree with part of that, I don't agree with the forever punishment and making them nearly impossible to stay free and rehabilitate. I only see the USA with these problems.
She's obviously never experienced assault. Their rights are being infringed upon? SFW? They almost always go on to re offend. Her mewing and overly sympathizing is OBNOXIOUS
Obviously she has never been affected by a sexual crime. People need to understand this crime affects victims for life and even causes more offenders. She may be should also talk to the victims and find out why these laws are important.

I have zero compassion for anyone who is a sex offender. I think they should be out in prison or a community completely monitored .
Prison should be a haven for these offenders, because it would be filled with characters wanting to be a target of the very conduct.

Why is this therapist and the interviewer so concerned about the sex offenders and their depression? Go interview someone who is on drugs, a prostitute or someone with severe anxiety/depression. 9x out of 10 they are trying to nimb the pain from a sexual assault. So idgaf about these chomos and their depression. I care about the people whose life they destroyed.
I always find it strange that the sex convict has commited a crime against children but it cited that they have behaved well in prison, of course they have there is no kids in prison
I am kind of shocked by this interviewer's disposition. I was assaulted continuously throughout my childhood. I was raped as a teenager and adult. I have never had a close relationship with a woman who did not express she had been abused or assaulted sexually at one point in her life. Most never reported. I'm still open to discussions on how to effectively deal with them, because I know my first abuser was also a victim. That being said, I will never forgive him.
There is reporting with an angle and then there is this bizarrely biased pieces. From the words she says to her intonation in the first half, she frames this almost as if sex offenses are not serious. A majority of sex offenses that are ACTUALLY prosecuted are egregious. There is significant evidence that sex offenders are very likely to re-offend. Other countries have tested that 're-integration' thing, even allowing child predators to interact with children regularly to 'desensitize' themselves. They deserve the stigma. I was abused and I did not continue that cycle. It is a god damn choice.
Now if this was a piece about how black men are disproportionately accused and convicted of sex offenses without the evidence required to convict white men, that is worth a story. But this? I strongly disagree with this. It is careless towards victims, who are the most likely audience. Poorly done.
