      I’ve ran into him a couple times here in SLC. He is an unbelievably strong person. I grew up gay in the LDS church (and that was horrible) so I couldn’t even imagine what it was like for him. Part of the reason I haven’t moved from SLC yet, aside from loving it here, is that I want to continue working with local political and activist groups to take down the Kingston clan through legislation.

      @@ethanahmu6149 good for you Ethan! they gotta go those people are hurting people they’re sick abusive people. Salt Lake City is a Beautiful Pl., Utah is a beautiful place but like many beautiful places you can hear the cries of the spirits of boys and girls in the wind and it’s a very sad place. But really that’s our world; you hear those cries in Australia, you hear it in Canada, and in India and Cambodia other places where people in power enslave and traffic children and do very cruel and horrible things to children. And you may not know about the scandals of those places, and Id encourage you to learn about these shameful atrocities. governments, especially here in the rich and powerful west, is good at concealing their evil, including our own government which has actually done terrible things to its own people let alone people in foreign lands. The Men at the top want to own women and they want to abuse girls and they want to conceal it under supposed religious beliefs. I’m gay as well and I grew up in the Roman catholic church I went to 12 years of Catholic school it was a total mindfuck and it took me the next 40 years to unwind from it but they have absolutely no moral authority when their priest abuse children and they don’t do anything about it it’s been going on probably for at least 1000 years. Yeah so stay in Salt Lake City and be a part of the healing! Violence, genocide, inflicting pain on the innocent and the defenseless, and the stealing of resources, and the starvation of people, all these things have been going on forever and it’s just tiring talking about it, But we never give in!what I get encouraged about is seeing the incredible strength of an individual human spirit in surviving those things and freeing one’s self so just remember that they really can’t destroy us.

It was hard to even keep up my part time job when I was pregnant I can’t imagine being forced to pop out kid after kid. These radical Mormons are living my personal hell everyday. Incest, polygamy, pedophilia, male domination, cultist idealism, worshiping false idols, forced marriage and childbirth, there is nothing that these people will stop at in order to hide behind the guise of religion. Although America is home to religious freedom I am soooo sick of these cult leaders being protected against criminal repercussions under their right to religious freedom. There is a fine line between organized religion and a dangerous money laundering cult and unfortunately that line is crossed way more often then it should be in America.

Married at 16, forced to have one baby every year AND "stay thin", having to go through multiple miscarriages and nearly dying because of it, being attacked by her husband for simply trying to survive... For me, the number one victims of polygamy will always be the women having to fend for themselves and take care of all the children. Some men are sick and use religion as an excuse to control women. 13 siblings is already a barely feasible number for one person, 157 is downright absurd even if the guy has had 14 wives (I had to look it up). How do you even have time to cause 157 pregnancies? Joe's dad, based on the info I could find, is in his 70's now. Even assuming Ortell got him hitched promptly at 18, that's an outrageous number of kids to have in probably less than 50 years (since Joe has said in interviews that his dad may have had more children since he left, so that 157 isn't his lifetime total).

      This video neglected to mention that the father "freed" Joe for the same reason that ALL of these polygamist cults drive out most of their young men: in order to have more young girls for themselves. These young men are called "the lost boys of polygamy" and they are legion around the world. Nature makes half the people male and half the people female. The only way a man can have 13 wives is to deprive 12 men of a wife, more or less. It's baked into polygamy that a large percentage of men go their entire lives without being able to marry and father children.

      There were a couple times when I was watching the "Escaping Polygamy" series recently where I recognized a lot of places. ie, there's a scene where the girls are driving to / from the Davis County Health department. They drove right by my street. It was weird to see. I mean, I knew the Jeffs types were around (I glimpsed a few at WalMart years ago) but didn't know about the Kingstons. I mentioned it to some friends (the series) and found out that one of them used to work at a daycare with some Kingston children.

    I just watched Priscilla's episode of Escaping Polygamy and she said she tried to run away twice. The second time she got caught, her father told the leader and they had her sent to an institution on a lockdown unit. So to see him in this video saying he gave her the choice to leave is turning my stomach. The girl literally had to sneak out in the middle of the night and RUN from her family. And the messed up part about all of this is that they KNOW better. If they didn't they wouldn't go through the trouble of keeping everything a secret, lying and keeping their pregnant wives away from hospitals when they really need professional healthcare. If they truly believed in this crap, why would they feel any shame? I can't even imagine being apart of something so evil. They're nothing but manipulative, wife-beating, incestuous child molesters. All of these men should be rotting in jail somewhere. And they have the nerve to bring God into this. They're delusional if they think that all the sins they've committed are going to land them anywhere but Hell.

      Karen Jackson
      I know several Jehova's Witnesses in my country, and they have religious reasons for not doing some common healthcare-related actions.
      For example, they don't agree to blood transfusions because they believe the soul resides in the blood. Mixing souls is a pretty straightforward issue if you have a belief like that.
      I'm not familiar with Mormons, but I assume the primary reason for avoiding modern healthcare is for similar reasons.

    • @Infinite_Jester
      @Infinite_Jester 6 лет назад +2

      The religious reason for not getting vaccinations or blood transfusions etc. for Jehova's Witnesses is that they believe the soul exists in the blood, not that God will heal them. Belief in religious healing within Christian-derived sects isn't uncommon, but it's quite rarely used as a complete substitute for medicine.
      The communities are generally small and tight-knit, so the pressure from the private sphere is immense on the victims, and the victims often believe the consequences for involving the public sphere is worse than the alternative. This is presuming the victims even feel like, or are in actuality, victims in the first place, which isn't always the case.

      @Pancakes0o 6 лет назад +7

      Tripticket you can still go to the hospital if you need a transfusion. We use alternatives to blood transfusion for our patients who are Jehova’s Witness. It’s a longer and harder recovery but we essentially support the body’s recovery with medications and supplement so that the patient speeds up their own’s body’s production of red blood cells. Like i said, its a longer recovery since we’re not immediately replacing blood. But it’s still safer since your being monitored 24/7 rather than being cared for at home. There’s limits to how much care a handful of people can give versus 20-30 people workinf around the clock to make sure you get back home safely.
      There have even been Jehova’s Witness patients who reserve their own blood for later use in their upcoming surgery.
      But yeah, let your Jehova’s Witness friends know that they dont have to receive blood in order to bolster the red blood cell and hemoglobin supply in their body

      Shayna Richardson I believe the non-religious ones prefer the term polyamorous, as a means of distancing themselves from these kinds of relationships. The dynamic in polygamous relationships is VERY different from polyamorous ones. Polyamorous relationships don’t tend to produce lots of kids like this, and the partners are on an equal footing - both women and men are allowed to have multiple relationships. Also, there’s usually a main couple (man and woman), and they both have sort of side girlfriends or boyfriends (or share one)!

    This is the first documentary I've seen that accurately confronts the whole lack of a comfort zone the second you get out. You have /nothing/ familiar apart from maybe music, TV shows, books. Meals. Stuff like that. You're immediately thrown into trying to be a "normal person" and it's incredibly scary. And every time you screw it up and fail at passing as a "normal person" (I'm talking something as minor as being judged for mixing two actors up) you immediately have that urge to just go back because you feel like "normal life" just isn't for you and you're not good enough for it and that your failure is somehow proof that you don't belong in the normal world.
    A lot of times, too, you've lived a double life. You've played a different character, a persona you were TOLD by these people to have (so you wouldn't get anyone in shit) for so long, that you're not even sure who you are and that's how mental illness kicks you in the ass. You're told to say, you're just sick a lot and that's why you miss school so much, when really, you weren't allowed to go until you didn't have any bruises. You're told to tell teachers the extended family contacts on your file are just really hard to reach and they'll back that claim up to hell and back if a teacher comes calling. You're told to play up that you're a klutz, you're not that smart, you don't give a crap about school, so people don't question your shitty grades or how you always seem to have one bruise that won't go away. I started to believe that I /wasn't/ smart, that I /wasn't/ coordinated, that I /didn't/ care about school, when the opposite was true during childhood.
    I started to believe that I wasn't worth a damn. You don't ever fully leave that mindset. You never fully disbelieve what you were raised to "know" about yourself. To this day other people know me better than I do because I don't really know how to read myself, only other people. Because I had to anticipate their reaction, the slightest change in their eyes or tensing of their posture. I was running on autopilot just from the mental resources needed for constant hypervigilance.
    My story didn't involve polygamy (that I knew of, not that there was anything explicitly against it - it just was never really talked about outside of others in other far-away places) or incest at all, but it was so fucking similar that I'm just - I'm having chest pains from how much of a stress and anxiety response my body is having to this documentary. Just out of fear. Out of truth, really. It wasn't Mormonism, it was sort of an off-label version of Free Evangelism, the "free" meaning they felt they didn't answer to the government and that the government had no jurisdiction over anything that they did or believed. They convert you around four or five and by twelve to fourteen you're "ready". It also has its claws deep in my region of the world. Teachers, businesses, doctors - every place you go has someone who is a part of this (not that they'd let just anybody know that, professionally). I couldn't even leave the house for a very long time. I try to talk about it in my writing and films, fictionally, just because I can't talk about it out loud yet without feeling like I'm going to implode.
    There is too much truth in this documentary for me not to be scared, because I'd be fucking terrified to talk about anything like that on camera knowing how many people could possibly see it.

The 3 main girls of the show are also John Daniel Kington's by 2 different wives and I know he beat 1 of them so bad, CPS got involved and the courts. She was actually adopted by a non polygamist family and is now trying to save other girls from the clan.

      A father dislocating his daughters jaw is criminal, and should be dealt with by the law no matter where you came from.
      I came from a much less violent polygamist group. We were taught that a man that acted this way to his family was practicing unrighteous dominion. It's just horrible.
      This dad's day of reckoning will come, and he will feel very small and ashamed. You reap what you sow.

    The woman with glasses said something kind of interesting that I agree with, but also unwittingly shines light on an issue we are grappling with today, seven years after this film was made. In response to the man who said that polygamists should have the right to, as adults, to form their own families (and, if you believe gay marriage should be legal then you should agree that this guy is 100% correct about polygamy), the woman pointed out, correctly, that kids under 18 should be protected from having to enter into a polygamous marriage. But what if they want to? What if a girl aged 15, 14, 13, is all about her clan wants to continue in the polygamy life decided SHE is okay with it? If you say, “absolutely not” then why not? And if that is your stance on underage kids willingly participating in polygamy, do those same reasons apply to an underage kid choosing to have “gender-affirming care”?

    If you marry a bunch of women then at least take care of them financially, especially if you expect them to pop out a baby annually. Sounds to me like these women get all the negatives of being a single parent e.g. hardships, loneliness and absent father, without the positives e.g. freedom to do what you want with yourself and freedom to raise your kids how you want.

      you just wrote "to stupid" .... Its "too". You understand how stupid you look for doing that right? Its like irony in its purest form. Also, these women are brainwashed, they aren't stupid. Their beliefs are like a religion in the sense that you cant tell someone their stupid for believing in something you were raised into. Say you are a Christian, and someone from a different religion says youre stupid for being that. Its what you were raised into. What someone thinks is stupid, is normal for others. I think polygamy is wrong btw. But don't say these women are stupid when they are struggling so hard, im mean, YOURE A WOMAN. You should feel for them and how these men take advantage of them. If youre going to be mad at someone, at least be angry at the men... smh

    • @aviationcompilation455
      @aviationcompilation455 8 лет назад +15

      Tazia Jones Its funny because you have this tone like im disagreeing with you, when we obviously feel the same way about everything but you want tell them they are stupid.
      Telling someone they are stupid for what they believe is just the wrong way to go about it. You are immediately putting them down and making them feel like shit about themselves.
      Obviously they know that something is wrong because literally everyone is telling them that who isn't in their own circle. This is why I say they are brainwashed. When you know something isn't right but you do it anyways because a part of you thinks it is what you should be doing (because so many people told you so), that is called being brainwashed.
      If you had a child, and they were positive that polygamy was right, would you just call her stupid?
      My point is, I agree with you on how believe what you truly believe and be your own person, don't let people choose your path, but treat these people with compassion just like your own family.
      Just like drug addicts, they aren't dumb for having an addiction. It isn't always black and white like that, there are sooo many factors involved. Back in the day, they treated people with addictions like sick people, not criminals. We should treat these people the same way, not call them stupid for their beliefs.
      What if someone said youre an idiot for believing reincarnation? Chances are, that person doesn't understand the idea of reincarnation but they come at you like they are sure of it. Then who is the idiot?

      That’s what happens when you’re in a “cult” or an otherwise isolating religion. I was raised primarily Jehovah’s Witness my entire life and it wasn’t until I started talking to people outside the church that I realized everything I had been taught and all the rules were strange. It’s a reality for a lot of people and they really don’t know until it’s too late.

      Not saying it is right because it is not, but they get away with it because they “court” girls until they are 18 and then they are married. But the men are only legally married to the first wives. They’re not even on the birth certificates of kids who aren’t from their first wives. This way they can be counted as single moms and get more welfare 🙄
