That Ranger is pulling the Jeep up the Ike easier than than the Jeep would under its own power
That’s the only way that Rubicon can go 60 mph up that mountain.
Haha
A Rubicon can do more than 60 up that
@@AverageReviewsYT
Have you ever driven one?
@@scottythebody0811 clearly you haven’t
@@AverageReviewsYT
Wrong, owned one with a 6 speed. Completely gutless. Disappointing considering how over priced they are. Traded it for a f150 5.0, ten speed. Night and day difference. Maybe you should drive something in the 300+ hp club before you comment on how fast a wrangler is.
"Leave the damned hood alone!". 😂😂😂😂
Pleaseeee
I'm impressed by how well that little Ranger performed especially when it towed back the suburban in a previous video, also I agree with Mr Truck I dig the old school sunset throwback decal but should have left the damn hood alone 😂
I agree with the hood decal it's not good looking if they just left the hood alone It would be good but I think they over did it with the graphics adding the hood graphics
I personally like the hood. To each their own. But yes, this Ranger did a great job. Although, my 98’ 4.0 SE probably would have done just as well, even though it wasn’t rated for that much weight. I used to love smoking Civics with intakes and cat-backs (2000-2008) off the line with that truck. By 60, I’d be 2 lengths ahead haha 🤣
So glad to see Mr Truck and the Ike again!!
Thanks
40k miles on my 21 Ranger. No issues with anything. I've taken it off road through the woods of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the mountains of North Carolina. I have towed a fully maxed load multiple times long distance. I get great gas mileage as a grocery getter. Best purchase i ever made
Same. My 21 does everything and anything I ask of it, great.
This is exactly the review I've been looking for. I need something that can handle a bit of snow in the UP. Do you still have the Ranger?
Owned our Ranger for over 3 years now, tows great, rides nice, decent mpg, never had an issue with it! Great video as always!!
Looking forward to watching Andre’s Super Ike with his Colorado. Should be an interesting comparison between the Ford and Chevy.
These trucks are very underrated. They are great trucks
Ranger haters flat out refuse to believe how good these things are. Those of us that have towed and worked with their 19’s know there was nothing embellished in this video.
Love mine, I laugh when I hear the biggest complaint, “it rides like a truck”.
I yank 7200 lbs in my '19 Ranger up and down mountains in Colorado and Utah several times a year, with the Ford installed TBC, and have NEVER had a problem. I LOVE my Ranger.
Some insecure people don't want to be seen in anything smaller than an F-250 Super Duty.
Hell even in the Ranger community the OBS Ranger drivers complain that it’s too big. It’s a couple inches here and there. It still fits into the same tight spaces as it always has. It’s just a far more versatile pickup than what it used to be. Ford built a midsized pickup that can do the same work that halftons did 20+ years ago for a lower price, exactly what the market has asked for, and you have people bellyaching because Ford gave them what they want.
I want to see someone hand their late 90’s early 2000’s half ton over for a Super Ike and see how it compares to the Ranger. It isn’t that hard to find my boss drove a 2013 Silverado with lower max towing than my Ranger.
Ford Part #: VKB3Z2C006A
I love watching videos of turbocharged trucks tackling the Ike. This one was great, too. The little 2.3 was humming along at 3800 rpm, under boost, and had plenty of power in reserve at 60 mph. It could do that continuously and not hurt itself. Watching them flog naturally aspirated trucks up the Ike with the loud pedal floored and the engine screaming over 5000 rpm makes me cringe.
I have to say it's been outstanding watching Andre grow from his first video with the weird Russian thing to the very well-spoken well-educated and experienced Automotive journalist he has blossomed into. it's a one-of-a-kind unique thing that only happens has a result of RUclips
I have a 21 ranger tremor and it’s a beast. Uphill in the mountains, passing is a breeze.
I will hit 2 years of 2021 ranger ownership in november. Just towed 5000lbs from 600 miles. Averaged 15- 16 mpg doing 70 on mostly flat ground. It towed weigh better than expected, will be towing a lot more the next coming year.
I am surprised the Ranger did that well. Impressed as well. Thank you for this unbiased review.
Why? Every video they and other put out with the Ranger towing, has always done well.2.3 is a decent engine.
i love the old and new rangers, awesome little trucks! not so small these days tho
The Ranger snatched that trailer up the hill so easily, it was almost boring. Great job.
Always great to see the legendary Mr. Truck going up the Ike with Andre!
Thanks
"I don't like what you did to the damn hood!" Gotta love Mr. Truck. And, he is correct.
Thanks
These little EcoBoost motors are damn impressive. Please keep mr. Truck on regularly, love that guy!
Until it goes Ka Plooey 🤯😂
@@roadglide1142 Ecoboost engines are generally very reliable.

My 19 Ranger was a monster. I tuned it and beat the crap out of it and had zero issues. I'd still have it if we didn't need something bigger.
Saturday morning, coffee, Andrei and Kent rolling up the Ike on a review. Good times. All is right in the universe.
"You shoulda left the damn hood alone Andre!" 😂 I agree Mr truck!!
Yeah
Comparison to the Ike Gauntlet with the 2023 Chevy Colorado (which was towing a 6800 lb travel trailer):
(Ranger / Colorado)
- Brake applications - 9 / 11
- 35-60 MPH - 16 sec / 21 sec
- Squat - 1.0 in / 2.5 in
- Sound - 64 dB / 60 dB
- Time - 8 mins for both
- Uphill RPM - 3200-3800 / 3800-4700
- Uphill MPG - 4.3 / 3.6
- Overall MPG - 10.7 / 9.6
Honestly quite impressed with the old ranger. Performed better than the new Colorado in every category except for sound. Also seemed to have a more robust cooling system. This generation of Ranger tows extremely well for a midsize truck!
Interestingly enough in the most recent Ike gauntlet video the 23 Colorado and newest ranger both did about 14seconds in the acceleration test. I think it's the same Colorado too. Andre's?
@@Intentsriginteresting. Maybe the Colorado wasn't broken in all the way when they did the first test? Still seems like a big difference!
For the record, it seems as though the Colorado was running the stock tune (310 HP / 390 TQ) on the first test and was flashed to the hi output specs for the later one (310 HP / 430 TQ). This (mostly) explains the difference in performance!
The uphill performance was impressive for that little truck
Having Mr. Truck in the truck adds 20 pound feet of torque.
That’s his affect not his ass! 😂
No..just 20lbs! 🤠
Of course thanks, that's why I lost 55 pounds so I could create more torque
Hey TFL!! You haven’t done a maxed out 2.7 Silverado since they upped the parameters and the new max towing capacity. Same with the 3.0 DuraMax since they upgraded it & upped the capacity on it as well. There’s a couple more trucks I’m sure GM has in the press fleet.
The local dealership brought in about a dozen 2.7 Chevy Silverado Customs and advertised them as work trucks. They were basically loaded Custom models (which is still pretty basic by todays standards) and that worked!! I was visiting them the other day and they said they have dozens on order, have already sold around 100 similar trucks (mostly white), and they come in pretty fast from the factory. It was interesting. They have a few Ford guys switching due to the current reliability issues/rumours (even the Chevy guys said the “issues” are overblown), but the biggest reason was the Chevy gets better real world fuel economy apparently and the power delivery is very similar.
I found it interesting. I’m a Ford guy!! 😂😂. The guys at Chevy agreed they they would benefit if something like Pro Power Onboard was available. They get guys coming in, asking when it will arrive, then they go to Ford because it is something they absolutely want. That’s why I am staying with Ford. 2022 F150 Tremor with Pro Power Onboard.
I like the decals! Nice job, Andre!
If that was a Tacoma it’d be revving at 5 grand the whole time! Torque and gearing is everything when it comes to towing.
Well first of all the Taco would NOT be towing 7500lbs.
Tacos aren’t a tow rig. They just aren’t
Eco boost is a beast! for having such a small displacement.
The 2.3L in particular in the Ranger has been on the road since 2015 as well with no apparent major issues. I'd say 8 years of service is pretty dang respectable and should quite anyone that says this powertrain isn't proven.
@@benlzicar7628 The Ecoboost engines have been around for over a decade now, so Ford have been able to improve the design/engineering over time.
@@benlzicar7628 Was a disaster in the Focus RS, but I think that was a supplier issue or something vs design. What was delivered was not what was designed.
is if the same 2.3 found in the mustang

I have a 2011 Ram Dakota that I used to you various trailers from a camper to flatbed with a load. I've towed thr😮 the Rockies with a trailer that was about 7200 lbs . It did fantastic and kept up with the speed limit easily. You guys should find a Dakota and test it on the gauntlet. Did 12 mpg! Dakota was the 1st mid size truck.
Seriously TFL lets see a late 90s diesel Ike challenge between a ford 7.3L, dodge 5.9L 24 valve, and a chevy 6.5L. The trucks need to be as stock as stock can be, even better if it was viewers’ trucks. I’d offer the services of my 1999 F-350 single rear wheel with the 7.3L for this test.
Love my 21 FX4 XLT Ford Ranger. A year and half in of ownership with 21000 miles, no issues or concerns this far.
Love the towing videos, but I liked the old scoring system better, it actually gave numbers to compare and spread the scoring wider so you could have a list of trucks and see how many points separated each one.
My 2020 Ranger has really impressed me. I’m excited to see what the new Colorado’s can do.
The ranger continues to impress me
Thanks guys for another great start to my weekend!
Im super happy with my 2022 tremor lariat. Look forward to getting a trailer camper to tow for road trips.
I own a 19 ranger xlt fx4. Mild mods but ford tune, bilstein 5100 set at 1.8” front with 265/70r17 toyo r/t w/ 1” spacers and other small non performance add ons. The truck has been great. Only thing I do not like is torque converter lockup schedule in 3rd gear. It’s just not to my liking. Other than that it has been a great truck!plenty of power for the size. Sometimes the trans at low speeds is meh, but it moves when needed. As long as it lasts I’ll be happy lol😂
This just sold me on the ranger.
Well done video! I like the colabs with Mr. Truck.
Thanks
I loved the 2020 ranger we had as a family. The only down side was the room inside was a little small once you put 3 people in it. But other then that an awesome truck with a lot of performance

Wow! That Ford ranger did very well thanks guys, Mr. Truck.😊
Great job guys. Always good to see Mr. Truck doing the Ike. ‘Ikeing’ s cool.
Thanks
Andre: since you are going to do this each week, which is awesome, consider adding in measurements and weights for Trailer Hitch weight and Pin weight for 5th wheel trucks.
Most don’t know that they are over loaded or at the limits for the vehicle Gross Vehicle Weight or the GVCW not so much the towing capacity.
While I agree that towing is going to be the most important to me and most others too but there are other factors to proficient at, I know you guys talk about that when discussing trucks with a bunch of options that take away from the towing capacity.
Since you are the de facto, certified, expert these are educational things to expand on. BTW, you are my favorite truck performance show/personality by FAR! I have been watch since you were measuring the brake temps.
The nice thing about the ranger is the payload is just under 1500 lbs. You can safely add the tongue weight to the truck and not have leave your family and stuff at home. The biggest downside to this truck is the 18 gal fuel tank. You really can only go about 170 miles between fill ups at max tow weight.
Less of an issue in Europe (assuming the tank isnt smaller than US spec ones) as they dont make PETROL ones for the European market, to my knowledge. certainly not available in Petrol for the UK, theyre DIESEL ONLY
@@petelattimer6808 I believe same size tank which is an issue for US spec trucks not an issue for any of the diesel options available everywhere else
I owned a 19 ranger and towed big with it, loved the truck to death, but the fuel tank was a major reason I ended up selling it. Also as good as the truck pulls I just didn't feel comfortable running it at high RPMs for that long. Ended up selling it and getting a 2013 F250 6.2L, just better suits my use case, bigger displacement means much lower RPMs, simpler engine I can work on, and a much larger fuel tank. The no factory break controller is real big bummer, IMHO any vehicle rated at over 5,000lb towing should come with the option for one with a factory, since it's required by law in basically ever state. Seems pretty silly we mandate backup cameras from the factory but not break controllers : P
I’m glad Mr. Truck pointed out the hood; I wasn’t sure about it at first, but after giving it some time I agree that it looked better without the hood stripes.
Thanks
If you look for any 2.3 EcoBoost Ranger motor teardowns on RUclips you will not find any because nobody has had to tear it down yet
I was only paying half attention, so it took me way too long to realize the Jeep wasn't someone riding your ass, and just something you were towing :D
Wow. I have a ranger and tow a lot but even I’m impressed with this run. I’ve never maxed mine out. I do have the Ford tune but it’s also leveled and on 32’s. It still hauls. I’d love to know what the coolant and trans temp were at the end.
Good to see Mr Truck in the chanel again
Could you guys test out a 90's Chevrolet C1500 like this? I got myself a 97 Stepside and kinda curious how it performs. I dont have any terrain like this in The Netherlands Im afraid.....
great to see Kent
Oh yea!
The 2.3 tows really well. The new Ranger with the 2.7 is gonna be a little beast towing.
This post didn’t age well.
2.7 is a dog!
6800lbs and losses on all aspects. Accept for in cab sound
Actually
Maybe you were referring to the ford 2.7 v6. If so you’re absolutely right.
@John Earley Not sure what your talking about. I tow weekly with the 2.7 ecoboost in the bronco. It has no problems towing. If 415 ft lbs of torque is a dog to you then the 5.0 coyote must be an absolute slug towing anything to you.

I have a 2022 Ranger Tremor.
It’s a great puller. Only major downfall is no factory brake controller
Are you guys going to cover the other bent truck frame that recently happened? Colorado zr2 Bent itself pretty good at mint 400.
Loving these Super Ike videos. Although this truck did a great job, it definitely lacked in the "towing features" department.
13:27 typo, MPH instead of MPG, but I guess most people will understand.
I had a 2019 Ranger XLT with the FX4 and tow packages, and I was always *very* impressed with its tow/haul capabilities. It definitely had a very firm ride when you weren't towing or hauling anything, but it is a truck after all -- it's not a Lincoln Town Car,. I traded it for my 2022 Bronco -- had the Bronco not come out, I'd still be driving it.
Firm? Its like riding wooden chair if youre sitting in the back, absolutely terrible ride, ford need to work on their suspension, even with fox shocks! Front is fine, but feel bad for whoever is sitting in the rear seat
I had 89 with the 4.0 and I pulled a 22 foot camper all the time.
Nice to see Mr truck in Tfl new episode 🎉

Not sure how far off from 7500 during my tow but I did have a little more weight on my hitch and I did experience a little sway that the truck quickly acted on to gain control before I had a chance to respond. 2019 Ford Ranger STX FX4.
Pretty impressive for the Blue Oval!
Damm straight, the team is back

You guys should install the ford redarc brake controller. It's a fun little project that will have you spewing expletives and cursing at ford engineers. It works very well once its installed though!
Still driving a 1995 with a manual. I bought it new and it keeps on going. I don't think these new ones will last as long.
A lot of folks who complained about the turbo Fords are not buying turbo trucks!😂. Including my brother who just got the new Tundra. He’s in love with turbos now!

Excellent. Proff you don’t “need” a full size truck to tow ocasionally.
the ranger now has more power, and the same weight of a early 2000s 1/2 ton pick up. with better tow rating
I'm waiting for the redesign see what changes are made before I buy
Don’t know what is about the Ike challenge, but Mr Truck and Andre bring the best from each other
Thanks
The star system needs work. I'd suggest doing points per category instead of partial stars.
Would be nice to have a side-by-side comparison of the manufacturer numbers vs weight slip numbers. I see so many trucks with max tow numbers that just seem unrealistic when you add up everything. Like 9k max towing becomes 7k after passengers, hitch etc.
rangers are rated 7500 with NO weight distribution either...lol
Wow! That was impressive. Mid size truck with full size capability. Reminds me of the the dodge Dakota with v8 engines. True work horse trucks.
Is there a comparison somewhere for the scores? Like how did the current Ranger do vs. the current Tacoma, etc.
Hi there I’m a fan of the show I’ve been watching since you guys had the 1 gen Raptor. I have a interesting test that you guys can do with the ranger. Ford sells a tuning kit for the ranger that offers 45 hp and 60 lb-ft I do know that 5 star tuning offers more power. I would like to see your ranger turned by ford and then go up against a stock new gen f150 with the 2.7 with a 3.73 rear because I believe the ranger has a 3.73 rear as well. Just let me know what you guys think.
Yessssss more Ike’s! Idk if it’s the same car just get creative lMao
I like how your last few videos have said “MPH” instead of “MPG” at the end. “4.7 MPH” 😅 just a slow cruise up the hill lol
Thinking of buying the 2024 Ford Ranger and doing a 48 state road trip with a travel trailer. What length and weight trailer would anyone recommend?
Amazing what a 4 banger can do i dreamed of what 4 cylinder and six could do against a v8 back in the mid 90s
TFL I want you guys to compare a 2.7L full sized GM truck vs a 2.7L gm midsized truck on the IKE with max towing to see the MPG difference. Then 5Kibs towing on both for apples to apples on if you have a trailer which is better on MPGs.
Sound is a log scale, so 70 is ten times louder than 60. Ranger needs an optional larger fuel tank to make towing realistic.
I’m always watching when Mr. truck is involved
Thanks
Surprised by the temp gauge being almost at "C" in the beginning. Is it an actual gauge and not a "dummy" switch? Most modern day ones quickly get to dead center shortly after starting the vehicle and stay there unless something catastrophic happens.
I cant speak to this specifically, but I do remember once in my old Ford Focus the needle dropping down. It was 15 degrees outside and I was coasting down a highway stretch. The needle never got to full cold, but I didnt have a sustained decent like here. Could just be a very narrow temperature range that the gauge displays, making small variations more obvious (which can be useful if starting to get too hot).
The one in my Fusion seems to be a real gauge. It stays down in the cold until the car heats up all the way. Once it hits the operating temp or slightly below if the oil is warmed up enough it'll turn off the motor at intersections and then turn it back on once you let off the brake or it cools down too much. But if you sit long enough without it cooling down the temp gauge does go down and then go back up when the engine turns on and warms back up.
@@ALMX5DP As long as you watch that gauge frequently. My brother’s first car was a Mustang it wasn’t anything special… it had a six-cylinder in it but he let the engine overheat and ruined it. Pretty sure it had a temperature gauge in the dash too. I learned that lesson early on,luckily it wasn’t my fault. I just remember being pretty young and my brother, well he was really good in school doing mathematics at a high level in college but he didn’t look so bright that day.🤦🏻♂️😂!
@@champinsoccer9 you don't floor it while it's cold right? That's really bad for your engine it can cause the block to morph, when the turbo isn't at operating temp it can hurt the impeller or cause morphing, and same with the transmission too.
I don't know why folks hate 4 cylinders so much. The 2.3T Ford engine and the 2.7 engine GM has both do great in the trucks they come in. The 2.7 equipped Silverados have a higher tow rating than the 4.3 V6 equipped models. Lol just don't put exhaust on it and there's nothing to be ashamed of. 😂 All about efficiency and reliability. If it works, run it!
I was surprised that little engine did so well pulling that trailer up the mountain. Seems like a really good towing vehicle. Thanks guys. Great video
Ever since Ford release the Ecoboost motor they have been a really good competitor when it comes with towing. Usually they have the highest towing capacity per vehicle group. Like crossover SUVs, full size SUVs, and compact SUVs. And even their sedans can tow a little my Fusion with the 1.5 Ecoboost is good for 1,000 pounds so basically small utility trailer to move a couch that don't fit. But Ford has gone crazy with towing with Ecoboost engines and the 10 speed. And it's not that big of a deal that my Fusion can tow a tiny bit of weight and if I had the 2.0 turbo it does better at 2,000 pounds. But everyone else is trying to do cvts and they can't tow for crap like the Corolla used to be able to tow 1500 pounds all day long but then they threw in the cvts and Toyota immediately said do not tow with the cvt. Beforehand they said it was cool towing 1500 with the 4 speeds or 5 speeds. I think it's cool Ford made it so you could tow with just about any of their vehicle options.
@@lidolf8168 very interesting and I agree that is cool
It was so stupid of Ford to stop producing these in 2010. They were still selling 75,000 a year. Who does that? That was also the last year for the Crown Victoria, which all of us still see on the road. I loved both these vehicles as a youngster (later teens/early 20’s) and still do. It broke my heart to see them go. Why doesn’t this come with trailer brake controls? I still long for my 98’ 4.0L. That was a solid engine! No 2.3 for me...
The old frame wouldn't pass crash standards and ford was almost bankrupt because of Nasar blowing all the money on luxury car brands.
I had three rangers and loved them all.
What gear were you in going up and down the mountain at those rpm's? Thanks!
