Why wasn't the Silverado in the 28,500 lb tow test? I realize that it's not "rated" to tow 30k but it would have been interesting to see how it would have compared to the "rated" trucks. I mean in the 2017 test the Silverado was at it's max tow capacity and bested the other two, I'm just saying. ✌✌

The GMC is the looker, the RAM best interior a vehicle, big bad sounding HEMI and the Ford just a good all around truck to be basically the same since 2015. General rule of thumb is that a turbo engine loses about .5% per 1000ft in elevation while a naturally aspirated engine loses about 3% for every 1000ft. So based in that, the ecoboost is losing about 20hp while the RAM and GMC are losing over 100hp. I grew up in Pennsylvania, moved to Colorado for 6 years, and moved back. I moved out to Colorado in an 08 V6 f150 and you can literally feel the power being lost. I bought a 14 ram while out there and moved back with it. Again you could feel the power being brought back while dropping in elevation. I lived at about 6800ft in colorado. While I was driving, I could tell a difference in my breathing so I looked at my GPS, snd I was at 4000ft still. It was enough of a difference in the air that I could tell I was breathing easier. I literally could do almost anything without being winded for about a month after I got back to near 400ft in Pennsylvania. My f150 did 0-60 in about 8.5 seconds in PA with a cold air intake and custom tune. In colorado it was about 11-12 seconds. And the ram went from about 7.5 to 5.9 seconds going from Colorado to PA.
Thses videos only apply to about 5% if buyers since it only covers what people in colorado and maybe Alaska might encounter. The lower the elevation, the closer the test results would be. These videos are interesting but really don't apply to most who watch them.

How is the GOLD HITCH AWARD won by interior features and not towing capability? Suggestion: give a conversion factor for price- that way you can compare the trucks and not the bells and whistles. If you have a $30k swing in price for options it should be reflected in the score. Also if you load according to the lowest payload or tow rating of the competitors, factor the percentage of total. If one truck is maxed out at 7k gvw and another at 10k, take the average of the class and reward the manufacturers for building an above average offering.

TFL is the best, grateful to have a channel like this out there providing this type of content to assist folks in picking a new truck. he fatal flaw in this test is that its cold outside which gives the Ford a level play field with its turbo engine. From first hand experience the Ford is a great truck but cannot tow and handle 100+ degree weather. Towing a 4 seater Can am maverick from Phoenix to Flagstaff on a 100 plus degree day and the Ford goes into restricted performance mode. Talking to folks that live here in the Arizona desert they say the same thing. Love the truck, great truck, dont try and tow on a hot day at altitude.

I have had, and currently own, many F150's and loved all them. I hate that the score comes down to subjective. It was obvious that the older guy already had Rams. The F150 from what I saw, was quicker up the hill and seemed to not kick down as much. That's what I would be rating. Wanted an F-150; spent 4 hours negotiating and got nowhere. I didn't just walk away, I walked away feeling like I had been insulted. I'd been a Ford guy for decades, but what they wanted for what was admittedly a really nice, fully loaded truck still didn't make any damn sense when you look at what it really is. We tried a few different dealers, even tried the local Toyota dealers who were really nice folks, but we hit the Ram dealership (knew nothing about the new Rams until the night before) and as soon as we sat it one it was all over. It's not even close, but at the end of the day it is a truck and it costs money and it had to make sense. Not only was the Ram a nicer vehicle, but it was about $15K cheaper than the Ford. I will say that 3.5L ecoboost with that 10 speed is damn impressive, but there is something to be said for just going with a naturally aspirated motor vs something that has boost in it. Gas mileage sucks in both of them, but that Hemi does sound nice. It worked out in the end, but Ford would have had another sale if they didn't let me leave. I swear it seemed like every time the salesperson came back with an offer from the manager that they thought that I was an idiot....it was the same damn numbers every time, just moved around a bit. I buy a lot of cars and they didn't just lose one sale.

Always like these reviews, thank you TFL - still going with my 3.5L Ford vs. the other two though. Re: I tow REGULARLY through the IKE tunnel. And the biggest thing I hate, is a truck that needs to stay at full throttle and push the engine and systems to the max to keep up. This video only substantiated this - 5000+RPM for both Dodge and Chevy to get up that hill. More specifically and probably more "real world" is the constant ebb and flow of the I-70 IKE pass. Almost always your coming to slow downs and having to get back up to speed on a regular weekend. I appreciate you guys doing this and probably scheduling this on a Tuesday at 10am when no one is on the road so you can showcase the trucks. But this is a MAJOR consideration and should be factored in. Having the F150 with that torque with turbos is huge in comparison in this regard. I routinely pass Chevy/Dodges, etc needing to rev WAY High to get their rig going again - meanwhile I am only at 3500 rpm (or less) and leaving them in the dust. This makes you less of a bottleneck to other drivers and in my opinion safer. Great review, but that would be my feedback.

Love your videos. I will say that the only part I don't agree with is the grade brake test. I think you should either use cruise control, or what I recommend, is to use manual shifting. If I am towing a load downhill in Colorado, (which I do every year in camping season), I will manually downshift on steep declines. I rarely use the brakes, unless engine rpms get too high. This would be a more real-world experience of how capable the gas vehicles are at handling the downhill portion of the Ike Gauntlet. If a driver is going to get into trouble, it is more likely to be when going downhill. If someone is traveling through any area like the "Gauntlet", then they should pay close attention to how well that vehicle holds on the downhill grades, and how to properly approach them. Watching Kent demonstrate proper downhill shifting would probably help educate the great following that you have.

I've owned two Ford F150 and really liked them, but after I got injured in the Navy I had to have a truck that would lower to help get in... I saw the Ram on commercial and decided to check it out and MAN was I surprised! I got the 2019 Limited and to tell everyone that will listen, this truck is Unbelievable! The ride is incredible. With my Ford Eco boost I had a lag getting off the line or trying to get out in traffic. This truck does not lag. The Ram gets about .5 MPG less than the Eco Boost. We have always been Ford people, but now I'm sold on THIS Ram. Will it be my last truck? I hope so, because these rides are very expensive.

I can’t speak for the other trucks, but the Ford is supposed to have a weight distribution hitch for anything over 5,000 pounds. It’s written in the towing guide and owners manual.
Edit: I looked at the other manufacturers and Ram recommends weight distribution over 5,000. Chevy recommends weight distribution over 7,000. I couldn’t find anything on the Nissan and the Toyota doesn’t require weight distribution for max towing.

      @Kramer63 5 лет назад +2

I don’t know if you were ship at the Chevrolet well. The rusting on the big three for pick up trucks are all equally in the toilet. I’ve seen 10 and 12-year-old Chevy Ford and Dawn trucks that have less rust than some that are only 4 1/2 to 5 years old. I think it’s a crying shame whether it’s the Chinese firm General Motors or Ford motor company or dodge they all have the ability to build them not to rust. Back in 1982 dodge had all of their trucks with galvanized undercarriage I had by 82 Dodge truck for almost 16 approaching 17 years that I drove that truck and it was rust free not even a blister on the bottom of the door sills. And I live in a state that uses 2 inches of salt for every quarter inch of snow. Just remember the auto manufacturers want these vehicles to totally rust out
So before you worship General Motors or worship Ford or those of you that worship Chrysler just remember every one of them has taken measures not to protect the steel. Even one of the best automobiles built that had a 15 year track record of being the best four-door sedan the Toyota Camry. Even the quality control this car in the last 3 to 5 years has dropped drastically. Maybe we need some company that has not been formed yet To build a product the same price with maybe a few less gimmicks but one that will last. There’s absolutely no reason why an automobile cannot last 30 years. Mercedes-Benz did it with her 200 series diesel four-door sedan’s mini of them untouched had pushed 300 to 500,000 miles original engine and transmission’s. Even Mercedes Stop making cars of that extreme quality. It would be nice if someone would get back to building cars the best they could possibly be

Pulled my 29' #8400 5th wheel toyhauler camper across the country to the South rim of the Grand Canyon and back this June.
The Demco 18K Auto Slide hitch performed flawlessly .
It was about 3400 miles round trip.
    Pulls like a dream.
If the road gets a bit too rough , add more air.

You guys should find out if RAM fixed the cold weather issues with their air ride. I would never recommend their air ride to anyone in cold weather climates.

Great job! But why not the 2018 F150 5.0 10 speed combo????

Thanks for the comparison, TFLTruck! Competition and choice is a good thing for everyone with a wallet to open. Keeps the auto makers innovating and giving us more bang for the buck as they try and out-do each other with every design generation. Ram wins this round, GM is showing vast improvements since the 08-13 era, and Ford will likely come out with another home run when they cycle over to their upcoming new design (all you insecure and upset Ford fans can relax). They're all great trucks and the margin of difference today is literally tiny compared to the differences between the brands ten-plus years ago, and tiny differences are exactly where we need all of them to be so we, as consumers, win.

Difficult to understand why the big V8s did not provide better engine braking than the little V6. Given the 10 downhill braking score for all, I wonder if they were in Tow/Haul mode. And, a horse trailer without equalization/anti-sway hitch? The subjective scores overruled the objective measures in this episode so far as we viewers can tell without the scores being clearly revealed.

Surprised me too. They ran a 2016 F150 5.0 (six speed trans) through the "gauntlet" and it required only three brake applications.

That dang 10 speed. I drive a ford with a 10 speed and my older 6 speed had WAY more pressure to hold it back. But I thought it was the v8 till now... great review!

It's all in the tuning. The tow/haul shifting and engine braking never works perfectly on any of them. If it did there would be no reason to have manually selectable gears. When you get to the hills put it in manual mode before you go up or down. Use D for the flats.😉

The Subjective scores did increase the margin a little in favor of the Ram but where the the Ford and GMC really lost was fuel mileage, at 1 point per 0.2 MPG, the almost 1 MPG better than the GMC and almost 1.5 better than the Ford is 5 and 7 points respectively. That more than anything else is why the Ram scored so much higher than the others, take that away and the score would be almost dead even as they all had the same number of brake applications and all were within the 5 second margin or error in the timed test.

If the trailer has electric brakes, did each truck have the exact same voltage output and at the exact same time relative to the truck brakes?

Love how the Ford whopped their arses up and down the hill but still came in last. The tests need to be more scientific. I want the data to tell the story, not opinions, as they can be bought(not saying they were in this case though).

OMG - when Mr. Truck said, "I place this class of half-ton trucks..." I knew IMMEDIATELY what he was referring to! Too many years of 4-H animal judging. Thanks for shared memory.
