I got the Gladiator, runs great, pulls 2 tons and gets me where I need to be. I do not tow all the time but when I need to, It dose it job.
That trailer took the Gladiator to pound town.

Andre was also letting the truck figure out which gear to descend in. Normally without a dedicated tow/haul mode, you would manually lock it in a lower gear for engine braking. The manual transmission would probably have done better downhill, but would've probably smoked the clutch going up.
9:03 "Feels like the trailer it pushing the truck around" "not at all" Proceeds to go a foot over the lane to the right then goes over into the left lane.
Right after that they tap the brakes and you can watch the Gladiator wiggle.
So ROman says it feels like the trailer is pushing the truck around and Andre says it's not while the video clip shows Andre failing to maintain his lane and smoke coming from the brakes...

Agreed. Although I think too much speed and towing at the limit was the cause. I gave this video of thumbs down because I wanted to hear more about these debility the how did the front end feel, was the steering light? Etc. More towing stuff not BS competitions.

Total success! Zero bad. It’s the most versatile Jeep ever made. It’s a Jeep truck leaning more towards Jeep than truck. I have the Gladiator Overland with 3:73.1 and 35’s. It is the best mid sized 4x4 I have ever owned. Far better than the 2020 Toyota TRD I had !!! Could NOT be happier ! My Gladiator is also 2020 with 31000 miles !
Ps. I have a No-Bo 168 off road camper trailer. Perfect setup !!!
Here's my take on the gladiator and why I justify buying one, I do more off-roading then I do towing, although I have a bass boat and other toys that I like to use and a truck would be nice to tow them with, which this truck can do every once in a while and will have no problem doing it. I enjoy the ride of the jeep and am very confident with its 4x4 capabilities, and can tow SOME toys if I need it. This truck is more of an overlanding rig then anything, which is why I got one. I don't mind TFL testing it like a truck, as this is what its advertised as, I just hope everyone understands that you're not gonna out tow a tacoma or colorado, but you will likely out perform the competition with the 4x4 capabilities, with the ability to tow small toys for camping and hunting trips.
Very astute take! I regularly tow at 4,600-6,500 lbs 26’ travel trailer, with my 2019 Colorado Crew Cab 4x4, V6, with more ease than that, of course I’ve never driven over the Ike, yet. But all over the White and Green Mountains of New England and Smokey Mountains of Tennessee, N. Carolina and VA.
I tow 7100pb micro boost xlr just fine on west coast just fine. Had to add redarc brake controller and airlift 1000 bags for springs.
That engine is screamin....Tick Tock.....Kaaaabang...A lot of stress on the engine towing that much weight.
This test turned out exactly as I expected. The Gladiator was being shoved down the hill by the "max load" trailer and struggled trying to drag the weight back up the hill. I don't think this test proved as much as all it demonstrated was a "struggling Jeep" operating on the edge of all safety considerations. A 5000 pound load would have been better as then we could have truly compared the Gladiator Rubicon to the rest of the midsize trucks in Ike Gauntlet testing.

It was pulling back timing to prevent detonation as the cylinder temps probably got quite high.
I think it's supposed to only tow one of those nifty 15,000 dollar "over landing" trailers so people can show off their rooftop tents and arb fridges.

I will put it into perspective for you. A truck that can tow on occasion and can off road better than most, but you wouldn't want to buy it as a regular tow pig.

Yeah, the old Jeeps in Europe got a Merc 2.7 V6 diesel. The new ones is getting a Fiat 2.2 L4 diesel. Both motors with solid reputations for reliability and efficiency.
However they also charge us 60% more than the US for a Wrangler so nobody buys them.

Would be very cool if you guys had a data logger to show the engine/trans temp and oil pressure graphs. If it could map out how many times it shifted that would be awesome also but would love to see those graphs
Who gives a shit! It pulled it up the mountain just fine. They checked the temps a few times and they were fine.
Actually, Andy, it didn't pull it up the mountain just fine. It was all over the road, crossing the lines on both sides, bad enough to get a ticket for failing to maintain lane if a cop had been there to witness it. That's just sad. The downhill braking was fairly impressive though.

The suspension may be capable of handling 7000 lb trailers, but not the motor and drivetrain. Needs a diesel or Hemi, programmed trans, and proper towing package...
The diesel will be the only engine anyone will recommend for towing. Its clear the gasoline engine struggled badly. Its an OK engine for a truck that size but not for towing an additional 7000 pounds around!
I don’t see anyone in these comments acknowledging the mountain they are towing over. If they are not lying about how steep it is, the Jeep did great. This is the worst it will ever perform.
@@ge99ne This. Everyone is talking like they did this test on some gentle slope. This is the Ike Gauntlet. It's the steepest stretch of downhill road available. This extra-long Wrangler just handled that with a 7,000 lb trailer behind it. I'm not seeing a big problem here.
Nobody is buying this as a hauling rig when they can get a 3/4-1 ton truck for that. What this proved is that it will _more_ than handle the loads and roads people are _actually_ going to put it up against.

Andre says "it feels pretty stable" video at 9:15 shows the Jeep using three lanes multiple times in a row ... I know the Gladiator is more about a do it all Jeep pickup, but using like this as a replacement for a full size pickup looks scary in this video to me.

The funny thing is that it performed exactly like a 1/2 ton of 20 years ago. Really the gladiator should be hooked to a 25’ camper and not much more.

Its not a full size truck.. its not going to perform like a fullsize truck. I still like it. I still want it. But i want a diesel and manual. And a WAYYYYYYYY LOWER price

I have watched several of your videos and think you guys do a great job. I have a Gladiator, purchased my Rubicon in September , trading in my 16 unlimited 75 th anniversary . This is my 13 th new jeep product and other than my 08 Commander Overland, I think it does a decent job towing. I haven't towed more than 5500 lbs but compared to the 5 speed slushbox in the 16 , the 8 speed is a great improvement. In upstate NY we don't encounter the elevation as in the video, but if you're not in a rush it will get the job done. Its a Jeep thing !
Tow this same setup with the 2019 Ranger, I'd love to see it. (Upvote this if you would also love to see it)

jd5179 well if we’re being honest the main purpose of this vehicle is not to be towing constantly, especially much over 5000lbs. Its a Jeep with more cargo room.
Its not built to use as a tow truck,an off road truck that can tow if needed ! What I find is laughable is the 12 year old new Ranger that is more than a 1/2 ton truck lol..

@@scottleggejr nope, since certain states don't seem to understand that properly installing a high quality brake controller and frame mounted hitch bumper is just as good or in some cases better than buying a "tow package" consisting of a marginal at best receiver and a china-tier electric brake controller

The Hemi from the Ram would have been the ultimate engine for power, efficiency and torque in this vehicle. They should offer 3 engine options, the 3.6 seen here, the 5.7 hemi from the Ram, and the top dog new diesel coming out.

Basically it proved what everyone should already know is that it shouldn’t be towing 7000 lbs just like any other midsize shouldn’t be. Especially if you live in a hilly or mountainous region. Maybe 5000 lbs. for the cost of these vehicles it should come with a brake controller and a tow haul mode. I have a hard time believing the trans is reading load. If that’s the case why do any trucks have tow haul mode

Alan Bowers I’m guessing you are a truck guy. It proves that manufacturers rate their vehicles higher than they should. I actually believe if you don’t have the rubicon a properly equipped gladiator says up to 7600. You watched it screaming up the Ike with 7000 so you think another 600 is ok. No but they say you can. We have an 18 wrangler rubicon same motor and trans, obviously different frame but it produces same power and there is no chance it has enough torque and power to be towing that weight. Maybe one time to help someone. Again I’m not beating up the gladiator I think it’s a wonderful truck. Im just being a realist

You bring up a good point. It is two different worlds towing out west at elevation with strong winds. Manufacturers should maybe give two different specs on their trucks. One for east of the Mississippi and another for west of the Mississippi.

Most of my towing is done during hotter months. Down south with high humidity. I'd like to see trans and engine temperatures on the mountain past durning summer time. I have a few 6% grades for two miles on my towing trips.
Reserve judgement for the Sport S Max Tow Package. Rubicon is Off Road Set up. also TFL should send all the mid-size trucks up the gauntlet with 6000 LBS and create an even comparison!

I'm towing a 22' boat about 5200 bs all loaded up with my Mojave with 2" lift on 35s. I live in mass where it's pretty flat and I'm real comfortable towing. I think my bigger tires and stiffer rear coils have greatly helped my towing ability. Overall very happy with towing but I wouldn't go much more than this. Cheers

Alan Bowers I see your point,what I am afraid of is people towing more than 3500 lbs without a trailer brake, which in a lot of states is illegal. If Jeep says that can tow 7000 lbs and doesn’t include a built in brake controller, frankly I think that is careless and unsafe, in my opinion.
Mike MacNeil it’s only recently though that any vehicle came equipped from the factory with a trailer brake controller. I’ve been towing for years and always bought my own controller.

Not apples to apples but Auto trader has 2010 3500hd trucks listed for between 20-30k, not work trucks. 2010 wrangler 4 door under or at 20k.

Tekonsha's pigtail listed for the 2014 Cherokee plugs into a connector on the left side of the steering wheel and operates my P3 controller perfectly, in my 2018 JLU Rubicon.
Wish FCA would bring back a midsize work truck that can tow and haul like the Dakota with a modernized 4.7 V8 Magnum with the 8 spd transmission.
7k rating but no tow haul mode or brake controller; not sure how they got away with that tow rating...I don’t care what size engine these midsized trucks have they shouldn’t be allowed to tow more the 5k....At some point the trailer is driving the truck not the other way around

And people have done it for years in what would today be considered mid size trucks with no "tow mode", no trailer brakes, and in many cases *gasp* no weight distribution hitch with minimal issues, its called operator skill, something that seems to be on the decline these days.
Except it every midsize truck from the last 30 years of had a tow haul mode button on the end of the shifter or on the dash somewhere including the four-cylinder automatic transmission Rangers
Not that this is a great selling point but, these 1/4 ton trucks are doing the same work or more then the 1/2 ton of 20 years ago.

Hello again Nathan&Andre’, once again great job. But I do have a couple pieces of advice. When you setup the WDH, that’s very similar to mine, that’s a Fastway E2, you are supposed to hook up to the trailer, then before drilling any mounting holes for the bar perch, that is when you need to crank both up as far as you can, then place the bars in the hitch mount, bring the bars over to the trailers chassis to locate the bar perch, then mark an drill the holes, still high enough to need the pry bar the WDH should come with. That’s how you get the most available weight distribution! I mention this due to the fact the truck/trailer still has sag at the hitch! Even though there are only two of you and the bed is empty! If mounted like I advised the combined truck/trailer profile would be totally level at the highest weight combination! The other bit of advice, you should have the 4 way flashers on when going under the speed limits, especially when under 45.

What was that Water/oil and Trans temp gauge at? That motor sounded like it was going to blow up!
I had some after thoughts. It appears to me the trailer was loaded WAAAAY too tongue heavy. The water tote appeared to be all the way in the front of the trailer which if true would severely overload the tongue weight even with the weight distribution gizmo (I have never used one) and cause overloading of the Jeep suspension-leading to some rear end sway. It also appears to have been loaded to one side and not in the middle causing more instability issues. I wonder what the tongue weighed? They talk about the gross weight of the trailer but don't mention the tongue weight? Or did I miss that part? Since the tote was not completely full it would also cause sway due the the liquid sloshing around fore. aft and side to side. I'm not saying the Jeep is a leaf spring truck when it comes to towing but there may be some other things to consider when you see the movement of the Jeep they failed to mention verbally. Either way not bad for such a small displacement motor and rear coil suspension.

That 8 speed is really nice if you pair it with the right engine. Our EcoDiesel loves it and it tows great. Boat is about 5000 lbs.
Do a 5600 lb test with the 3 horse trailer for comparison between the Gladiator, Tacoma, and Colorado.

@@mikemissouri5152 Nope, Ranger would put it in the ground. Colorado is either underpowered, or too low on torque, depending on engine choice.
t4thfavor1212 Nope you’re wrong. they already tested the Ranger and it was two seconds slower than the Colorado with the V6. The Colorado also had slightly better mpg’s. That was the ZR2 which isn’t really set up for towing. The numbers would’ve even been better with the Z71 because it’s lighter and gets way better gas mileage then the ZR2.

Hey guys! Love ulls videos! I have a Gladiator, and I need to buy an RV for work. Considering I work in the oil and gas industry, I would love to see an off road, or over landing tow test. I’ve seen a few videos of midsize trucks with bent frames on adventure trips, with tear drop trailers . I’m a little worried about that and trying to find more info.
Why would you do this test with a Rubicon instead of the Sport/Sport S which are the only two models that support the MAX TOW rating of 7650lbs??

Would like to see them do it with 5000 pounds to compare with the ZR2 and Taco. The ZR2 did it in 8 min flat and made it look easy.
I agree an apples to apples comparison would have shown better resaults. I like testing it to the limit but now the test cant be used to chart against the other brands.

with 35's and 3.73 gears my JK 2 door has issues holding overdrive at 75, no shit this thing is wound out trying to tow 7,000 pounds, how this truck earned this tow rating is beyond me.

@@ALMX5DP no that jeep was begging for them to stop pulling that weight. It should not be pulling that weight. And free reving would be fine. But actually working that engine with that weight is pushing its LIMITS.
@@bluerocky1902 How so? You see videos of sports cars screaming for their lives on track and call it glorious. Just because this isnt a good sounding engine doesnt mean anything. Since we dont know oil, coolant or trans temps we have no idea how stressed that engine really was.
Love your videos! Wondering if any of you ever asked the Ram folks if there was any thought to giving the 3.6L an eco-boost-like treatment with twin turbos? Also, if they ever do, they need to get an assist from the FCA family relatives over at Alfa for an exhaust system. Those alfa's have the best note on the planet from a hi-perf v-6! Thank you fellas!

Andre. Please check your numbers. 2019 TRD Pro payload is 1560, not 1000. Shows Gladiator is not great for towing. Would rather go with Tundra TRD Pro of Ram Powerwagon.
On the Toyota website for the taco, its 1200 for payload
Guys, Tundra has two engine size options I believe, hence the two different towing capacities and payloads.

Depends on your cab and bed configuration and your package and engine. All the frames and axles / suspensions they make are rated for the same thing, anything they add on takes away from payload.
A Conneely -Huh? Not what I said... The tundra comes w/ either a 4.6 or 5.7L engine. The original question was about tow ratings. There are TWO different tow ratings for the two different engine options. Edit, the 5.7L engine is rated at 10,200 lbs.

Now is there a break controller plug under the dash around the sifter nob? My Ram did not come with a built in break controller, but it had the pug.

@@jonsmith919 Andre went out of his way to not beat up on this truck, but it's clear that you shouldn't try to tow that much weight with it. At least not with that engine.
Now lets do a test to see how long it lasts taking it uphill wide open throttle and with a load for ten minutes at a time. My guess is not long at all.

I know this was a year ago, but I just purchased a Gladiator Rubicon and a Camper Trailer. The camper in Dry weight is 4782 lbs. What would you consider safe for adding cargo. I will never fill any of the tanks as where we go is full hook up. They say 80% of you pulling, but I want to know what you guys think.
