A mid size truck towing a nearly 7K lb box up that mountain is pretty impreasive. Period. It's never going to do it with as much ease as a larger truck. I think the transmission mapping could be much better in tow/haul mode but overall, that truck performed fairly well. From what I remember it worked because all his vehicles had the worst color paint on them.

The goal of the test is to see performance of low end torque and 4wheel abilities under tow.
I'm so glad you made this video because I want a Colorado but I've been looking at bigger trucks that I can't afford because I wasn't sure it could pull my camper. My rig is 4900 lbs dry and 6500 with the tanks full. It's only 23'. If you can pull that monstrosity in the video up and down the rocky mountains then a Colorado will serve me just fine in the middle of Virginia. Thanks!
Did you purchase the Colorado? How did it pull your trailer? I’m currently in the same position and would like to know how the Colorado performed. Thanks
I love a midsize truck but I would probably want a bigger truck with that trailer or get a smaller trailer with that truck. Nevertheless, that was quite impressive. I’m considering trading in my ‘19 Colorado for a ‘23. There’s some nice improvements overall.
You want the first model year of the next generation? Might as well wait for 24's to go on clearance once 25's arrive next year, IMO, or take the plunge now if the itch is that bad.
Great review. Really looking something like this and would possibly see a few mountain trips, but mostly flatter towing. I'd roll less weight though. Lighter toy haulers (small one less than 5K) with 2 dirt bikes or maybe to 2 adv bikes (1000K). I would want to stay under way under 6K. Looking at the temps I'd say maybe put that external trans cooler. Will defiantly be watching for more updates.
I've heard that GM trucks are made to work in conjunction with cruise to use full capability of the towing application. The system is a better manager than your foot. Maybe include some test using the cruise.
Great review as always ,,,love the new Colorado ! That is a good sized trailer and did very good. Tow with a new Silverado Trailboss and find cruise control on the down hill will down shift better . About the same weight on the Ike and holds well . Congrats Andre ! And great color ...
I have put two tanks of 87 octane gas through my 2024 Chevy Colorado work truck with the high output. On the first tank I got 17.817.9 on the second I got 18 miles per gallon exactly. Third tank of gas I’m using high test92 octane and I’m averaging 20.8 miles to gallon. You don’t have to run high octane but it sure does seem to help with the gas mileage.
I don’t understand the fuel economy issues with this engine just literally drove 2700 miles in mixed driving conditions. Both highway, city up and down Smokey mountains and the appellations. I averaged 24.3 mpg and 25.5 on highway driving. My truck is a 2022 Silverado crew cab 4x4. Yes the trip computer is accurate and within .2 mpg from my calculator. I’ve never got below 18 mpg.
A young girl slammed into the back of my Silverado while she was on her phone. My bumper on the driver side faces down now and I can’t use the bumper step now. You don’t realize how much you use it when you don’t have it. Love the bumper step!
Another great video! OEM tow ratings are such B.S. My F150 doesn't have the payload to match half the advertised tow rating. I would have to get out of the truck and run along side it to tow that heavy
@James Turner what I mean is my truck is advertised to have a 12000 lb tow rating. But my Powerboost payload is 1300 pounds for a crew cab. Weight of Two passengers and gear is and dog is 650 pounds. So now I can legally haul an additional 650 pounds, right? Tongue weight should be a minimum of 10 to 12%. So a 6000 pound trailer is max that I can tow and not exceed payload rating for a truck advertised with a 12k tow rating. Half of what is advertised! Sorry I confused you guys but hope you understand that math. It's BS regarding what you can tow because you eat up payload via tongue weight and passengers well before you reach max tow.
She did surprisingly well for hauling that big of a trailer and being nearly maxxed out. I'm glad Mr. Truck said it was the color of urine - I finally saw a Nitro Yellow Canyon in person and told my wife it looks like when you take a leak after too many vitamins . . . Oh and . . . Nice hat Andre😜
When I towed my RV over all the mtn chains with my 18’ Colorado V6… I made a simple rule. No rpms above 3,500 (for longevity sake). I was still passing semi trucks like they were standing still. However, at times my truck was only doing 45mph. I just let the truck slow before allowing it to downshift. The shorter downshifts are MUCH easier on the engine and transmission both. That is why diesel trucks last so long!!! Keep the rpms low.
the 3.6 doesn't make power until 6K+. you were just beating up teh bottom end of teh engine by lugging it. WOT is easier than trying to drive around the computer where it is set up for comfort via trans slip.
@@duramaxadventures5832 That engine hits 90% of its max torque by around 3,500 rpms. Thanks to VVT. Engines can generally only be “lugged” when working them hard @ rpms below 1500 or so. Slowing down and dropping gears multiplies that 90% torque. Which in-turn… reduces the load on the engine even further. Which even further Decreases the chances that it is being lugged. Not that it is even possible at 3.5k rpms.
Objectively it was a 4/5 Star run, but I think it failed to pass the eye test. It realistically only deserved 3.5/5 stars. The transmission and gear hunting should have been bigger demerits. The new Ranger with the 2.7 and 10 speed will likely get 4.5/5 when it completes the same run.
That is the single handed best way to break in a turbo engine to haul a load like that on hills like you did. My past Dodge Cummins engines got the same treatment and when you shut down overnight and go stone cold you will find the engine a totally different unit in terms of performance and mileage.

Just a shame they do not offer a long bed. Most people that would buy this truck are not camper trailer haulers but tent/dirtbike/atv campers and these 5 foot beds are just afterthoughts. A 6.5 foot bed is perfect because you can fit most atvs in the bed with the tailgate closed.
@jayhiggins5239 true. I had a king cab Frontier pro 4x then I had my son and a rear facing car seat was a no go. 2500hd crew cab gas solved all my problems.
Dude utility trailers are like 10x better than bed-load. I did a bed load of my dirt bike ONCE - Now I use a light-weight utility trailer with motorcycle front-wheel chock and it's ridiculously better :D Honestly I don't get the hate for the 5ft beds when trailers are almost always better (just make sure you get a trailer with tires rated to interstate speed or change 'em out).
@cputeq007 it is easier to load a utility trailer but the 5 foot beds are strictly a manufacturer convenience and bean counter decision. Not only is it cheaper to produce the truck itself with less steel but they can produce more trucks per hour because more can fit inside the building at any given time. This is why you get the same engine across models. It's cheaper. I went 2500hd crew cab gas 6.0 because I can put my 750 lb atv in the bed, tow a 7000 lb, 33 foot camper (with a 700 lb tongue weight) and still have almost 1500 lbs of payload left for people and other gear. As tfl has said for over a decade now, these small trucks are "lifestyle " trucks. I loved my king cab Frontier but it was not enough truck once kiddos and car seats come along. ( rear doors open backwards and require the main doors open, no go when small kids are involved)
Mr Truck firing in all 8 cylinders today!! 😂😂. “Why’d you buy a urine coloured truck?” Hahaha!! This is about what I expected from the Colorado. Maybe we can see if a truck from the press fleet WITH cruise control could manage differently?? Be an interesting experiment. I’m sure the fuel economy will improve with the cruise control. Always does, but I suspect the grade braking would downshift one more time. The transmission temperatures, I wouldn’t care unless they go too high. Toyota runs em hot as well. Could be an efficiency factor now that they run synthetic oils in them exclusively. Things do change over time. I’m sure we will see the High Output version towing on a hot day to try to cover all the examples. There’s the Canyon as well which GM has chosen to aim at a different demographic than the Colorado. Smart idea to widen the demographics overall for the market. Nice review and I agree with the rating!! Hard to stay objective when it’s your own vehicle, but Andrey did very well indeed! Thanks for using your truck Andrey!! Stay safe, team TFL!!

Towing heavy with this little truck, I might go up a grade in oil viscosity. And add an transmission oil cooler, or a larger one if it already has one. Personally I'd rather get a base model half ton than this Colorado Trail Boss, I think even with the same engine it would have a higher rating and it would feel more stable towing the same weight.
This isn't a Mid size truck. It Is about the size of a Full size truck from years ago. If this was the 1990's a GMC s10 was under 68 inches wide. A Toyota gen 1 pickup was 67 inches. These New Trucks are not small by any means.

1:45 "I'm not using cruise control today". Really, you mean to say: "I bought a 2023 truck that didn't come with cruise control"...LOL
Chip shortage
@@jasonpitts8395 he forgot to order it. teh trail boss is literally just a 2 inch lifted WT with fender flares. you have to add options.
He was also going over 60 most of the way up. So it wouldn't be fair for the time either 😅
Chip shortage 😂 my 2021ram1500 classic tradesman comes standard with cruise control 😮
something basically standard from the mid 80's come on chevy
A mid size truck towing a nearly 7K lb box up that mountain is pretty impreasive. Period. It's never going to do it with as much ease as a larger truck. I think the transmission mapping could be much better in tow/haul mode but overall, that truck performed fairly well.
I am excited to see the new Ranger and Tacoma in comparison although the Ranger doesnt have a "Trail boss" trim level.
For 75% of the population that needs or wants a truck, the new mid sizers are more than adequate.
Agree 100%. Folks don't realize that 20 years ago a full size truck would've struggled doing the same thing with a V8. Now a turbo 4 makes it look easy.
it will next year. for 2024 tremor is coming back. HOPEFULLY to XLT as well as lariat
I love it. I pull 6500 with my Colorado with a 2.8 duramax and it does quite well. The 2.7 is definitely up to the challenge.
Do you tow in mountains? Or flat land?
I tow on both and I take it easy.
Mr. Trucks noticed the truck has that morning color to it. Nice truck Andre almost a Mountain dew color. They are running transmissions warmer so the temps may have been fine. Great to see Mr. Truck and Andre the videos are great.
Thanks
“Why did you buy a truck the same color as urine?” 😂😂
If your urine looks like that you had better go to the doctor haha. One of my grandpa's friends was cheap although the guy had money. He would go to a Cadillac dealer and pick out the one with the ugliest paint color. Bright pink or Lime Green. He would tell them no one would ever buy it due to the color, and as a favor he would take it off their hands at a reduced price. From what I remember it worked because all his vehicles had the worst color paint on them.
andrew was avoiding the question at all cost
@@jasonpitts8395 that doesn't make much sense. If nobody bought the cars with a specific color, the dealer just wouldn't stock them.
Mr Truck roasting Andres truck to his face 🤣😂 great pair for these reviews!
Thanks
That thumbnail looks incredible! Prob the best on RUclips in my opinion.
Great video. I was surprised that Andre did not use cruise control, as I "thought" that was the norm; but then I remembered that this particular truck does not have it (hope a retro fit is coming soon). I too would love to see the actual transmission and oil temperatures.
It’s concerning that the transmission temp went up that high…and it was probably freezing cold that day.
it was 45°f. if it was 95-100°F outside i’d imagine they’d have to make several stops on the side of the road to let the trans cool down as it was already nearly pegged. that tranny will not live to see 100k.
I don’t know why, but I still think of Andre checking brake temps and speaking in Russian at the bottom of each downhill test 😂
That would be an interesting comparison to bring back though
I was bit surprised that it seemed to be a bit lethargic getting up to speed and seemed pretty loud getting there. I don't exactly recall how much you towed with the Ranger Tremor, but it seemed to do it easier? I thought this 2.7 would/will be great in this truck. The trans temps on a cold day are a bit bothersome unless GM designed it this way for a reason...... Nice truck overall and definitely on my shopping list.
this was also the mid tier 2.7 option. id like to see what the the high output does. that extra torque would help get it up to speed a touch faster.
Hats off for testing your own truck like that, I dont think i could load my brand new barely if at all broke in engine like that
Agree, but it is a business write off in his line of work.
@@larryj8924 Personal purchases are not write offs. Unless he has a channel or home business he is using this for that I don't know about. TFL did not buy it. Whether or not he gets paid $ from Roman behind the scenes for this content is also another discussion. As many have used their personal vehicles for filler content.
He will flip it in less than 3 years, so I whole heartedly hope he abuses the shit out of this thing between now and then. Give a true impression of how the GM can stand up to short term owners that work their vehicles hard. Still waiting for the payload tests that they never seem to do. (hauling gravel, bricks, lumber, etc.) Few press loaners at Davids Ranch got a work out. But that should be included in everything they test. IMO.
Really interested what the transmission temps would look like on a very hot day. I hate that GM didn't add a trans cooler from the factory.
Yep. Temps were dang near pegged. Come back when it’s 95 degrees.
@@sinister184 they won’t be able to as it’ll be in the shop getting a new tranny..
In warmer weather, it will overheat.

Urine! Ha! 🤣That's what my daughter said when I was looking at the new colors. Love the video, learned so much. Thank you guys! 🛻
Thanks
Great result. Really impressive for a mid-size. This is 1/2 ton truck performance from just a few years ago.
This truck has a 3/4 ton payload capacity so it should have at least 1/2 ton performance…
"I'm not using cruise control today..." Hmm why is that Andre? 😉🤣
I appreciate the Ike Gauntlet videos. As far as off-road trailering goes, I’d like to see an off-road test, pulling the Roamer1 (and next size down) on an uphill/downhill two track road and on a section of road that requires an articulating hitch. The goal of the test is to see performance of low end torque and 4wheel abilities under tow.
I think the color is badass Andre!
Thank you.
pee yellow and sounds like a lawn mower hahahaha! mr truck killing me this morning!
Thanks
@@kylepighini8292 No, I bought an F150.
@@KyletotheRescue thanks!
A lot have said already. Those temps would be a little concerning to me. Great test. It wouldn't be a super Ike without snow in May!
What a duo!
I'm loving that color. I think I might use it for my 81 Toyota starlet project. It too is yellow, but ugly early 80's yellow.
It may help to turn the AC on when going down hill. That will suck a few horsepower away from the engine when you are using the engine to to slow down
Great review.
Loved this video, thanks gents.
Thanks
You guys make awesome videos! Keep up the great work.
Love the video and the truck but those temps are a little bit of a let down
I wonder if the HO calibration has more effective cooling strategy that might solve this issue?
A young girl slammed into the back of my Silverado while she was on her phone. My bumper on the driver side faces down now and I can’t use the bumper step now. You don’t realize how much you use it when you don’t have it. Love the bumper step!
Pretty common situation in Australia a midsizer towing a near 7000lb Caravan( travel trailer). As well they are diesels
Had a diesel and 3.6 Colorado. Both are Definitely better downhill than the new truck.
The eight-speed didn't like that at all. It got hot because it couldn't pick a gear and stay in it
There isn’t a transmission in this entire segment that *would like* this test AT ALL.
That was a great test. I have this engine and 8 speed in my 2022 full size trail boss.
Another great video! OEM tow ratings are such B.S. My F150 doesn't have the payload to match half the advertised tow rating. I would have to get out of the truck and run along side it to tow that heavy
I can't think of a single truck with the Payload being half of the towing capacity. Seems like an odd observation.
@@slmjake US Pickups are downrated in Australia for the reasons you give
She did surprisingly well for hauling that big of a trailer and being nearly maxxed out. I'm glad Mr. Truck said it was the color of urine - I finally saw a Nitro Yellow Canyon in person and told my wife it looks like when you take a leak after too many vitamins . . . Oh and . . . Nice hat Andre😜
Thanks
I would love to know why GM didn't use the 10 speed, like the ranger?
@@duramaxadventures5832
That engine hits 90% of its max torque by around 3,500 rpms.
Another great morning with Mr. truck and Andre. Mr. truck, striking at the core with his critiques of the color of the truck though.😅
Thanks
For the record, I really like the color of Andre’s truck a lot! It looks special
Did I miss it what is the tongue weight/hitch weight? I can’t find that number anywhere for some reason.
"Why did you buy a truck the color of urine" 😂😂😂
That is the single handed best way to break in a turbo engine to haul a load like that on hills like you did. My past Dodge Cummins engines got the same treatment and when you shut down overnight and go stone cold you will find the engine a totally different unit in terms of performance and mileage.
How about demonstrating the theft alert feature
With how expensive trucks are, you'd think they could throw a transmission cooler on there.
You'd think cruise control would be standard too...
Or add a physical light switch
@@WSmith-ne5ks light switch is absolutely unnecessary. I have an entire fleet of trucks for my business. They go on auto once and never get touched again, ever.
@@WSmith-ne5ks add a physical light switch *for what?* There’s already a digital switch and the lights are literally automatic.
This channel is always full of bandwagon comments whenever it’s a GM. They have the most haters always nagging, crying, complaining, and making the biggest deal out of no big deal.
@@robertk1049 lol how do you generalize all trucks and options in the way that you just did as if options and trim levels aren’t a thing? Just because you think trucks generally are “expensive” doesn’t mean they all include a long list of *standard features.* That’s not how this works.
Andre should've kept his F-150 Powerboost
Howdy fellars. I know what it's like to drive I-70 in the mountains is bad weather like that.
Truck looks nice and modern, but from my previous experiences with gm, electrical gremlins and transmission issues I’m not ready for the nightmares again.
through teh radiator is very good. IF its on the cool side, but i agree ANY truck that tows need teh additional air to liquid cooler. (liquid to liquid has WAYYY more heat transfer hence why air is AFTER teh radiator ones)
I think I heard on one of the gm engineer videos that that transmission has cooled section cooled with the engine coolant. A tyranny fluid cooler would be nice too. However, I think the proper amount of heat is a good thing.
@@toddwright7349 i know the 10 speed does. the 2.7 doesnt have a thermostat it has a coolant control valve liek the 3.o Duramax. it DOES have a 600W electric water pump. Could just be GM dash is completely wrong.
or they display higher in teh bar graph to keep warranty claims down by making it look worse than it is.need OBD2 data to figure that one out.
I used to do that. Then I bought a utility trailer. It's just better that way.
@jayhiggins5239 true. I had a king cab Frontier pro 4x then I had my son and a rear facing car seat was a no go. 2500hd crew cab gas solved all my problems.
Dude utility trailers are like 10x better than bed-load. I did a bed load of my dirt bike ONCE - Now I use a light-weight utility trailer with motorcycle front-wheel chock and it's ridiculously better :D
Honestly I don't get the hate for the 5ft beds when trailers are almost always better (just make sure you get a trailer with tires rated to interstate speed or change 'em out).
I agree with Mr. Truck the engine is not really mad to tow all the time. For a daily driver it should be good.

They ditched the v6 ??? 🤔 dang epa working overtime .
I sure love the v6 in our Camaro.
I had a hummer h3 . I towed a trailer with camper and atv up Durango . It ran 5000 rpm and passed everything but a gas station. I thought the rpm’s it was gonna blow .
Glad I got a v8 in 17’. Ok with my 5.3 Silverado.
Yeah engine braking is a concern with the small epa engine .
🤠✊🏻👌👍
Those temps are concerning considering it’s snowing when you tested this!
These New Trucks are not small by any means.
i would never give up my 2018 V6 colorado for the new one i have real leather and both front seats are powered with lumbar and my gps WORKS WITH OUT A SUBSCRIPTION
