Can't wait to try this! I followed other peoples advice which was typically 'exhale through nose, inhale through mouth' - but what you are saying makes perfect sense from an exercise / oxygen point of view. Thanks! And what a backdrop to the video - the Petronas Towers are my favourite building in the world!
Thank you so much Justin for your videos. Most elaborate, and easy to understand instructions. I know you did think much when you were making this video, but you have improved my breathing in ways you can not even imagine. Keep up the good job.
My friends breathe through their noses while swimming, I thought I was weird breathing through my mouth because I thought it was easier. One tip I have for people is that, breathe big in with your mouth, hold it in, dont breathe out with your mouth bc you will instantly lose all that air and get tired/exhausted. I usually breathe in with my mouth, and breathe out little pockets of air with my nose.
My experience is breathe in through mouth and breath out through both mouth and nose. in fact , for breath in, once you open mouth after release all air, we will inhale air automatically. Breath out use mouth and nose will exhale more air quickly for next breath.
@@dreamcast19Yes. I build up with c02 quickly. I find with exhaling out of mouth and nose much more comfortable especially turning my head to get air.
I Love your tips and also the advise in swimming ,very encouraging, helpfull so to speak. Thank you , my breathing I learn from your video. I do iT as my werkout. So Thanks .
I'm so glad that I found this. I had been breathing out through my nose and I was finding that I just wasn't getting enough oxygen and I was getting so winded doing front crawl. There are times when I couldn't breathe. A little panicky even. I was frustrated because I couldn't figure out if it was just that I'm so out of shape or I'm just a fairly beginning swimmer . So today when I go swim I'm going to try this in an anxious to see how much it improves my breathing.
Why my head doesn’t come up enough too breath in when I turn my head up in freestyle kicking?(btw I’m just kicking and no hand because it’s just learning)
Hi Justin, I've been watching your videos for many months and got over the fear of water, after 30 years! I can put my head in the water quite easily blow out all my air but I've got to use a float. When it comes to taking air, I seem to get a bit uncoordinated and end up standing up. How can I take a breath sideways with a float, kicking at the same same and get air and put my head back under water? I can't get this at all! I seem to be too busy concentrating on my legs I get mixed up with the breathing?! Thanks, your videos are fantastic and have certainly helped me out!
Hi Justin, first of all great videos around swimming. Very helpful. Recently I have been experiencing pain in my teeth once I have started swimming. Is it the real cause? If so, can you help out how to work on that?
Hai justin. I tried to breath through the mouth. Every time come up for breath and i start to burp. What am i doing wrong. Plus i am afraid of water and i trying to learn slowly. Hope to hear from you. Tq
When I started swimming in the sea i was terrified of the thought that water will enter my nose so I used a clothing peg to block my nose 😂 I put a folded piece of paper inside it to make it press softer on my nose and it helped train me not to get water in my nose when I don’t have the peg on
Good stuff! Now if there was a video on how to do the following -Proper paddling of the feet (I tend to splash too much) - Breathing while in swimming motion. - Arm movement (locomotion?) STuff like that, even if it sounds as "self-explanatory" doesn't always work for everyone. Some people learn through doing and thats a lot easier to do than learning through sheer theory. I myself can't learn just from theory, I have to apply it somehow. So this is why I ask if you can cover more stuff. Thanks!
Hey Justin Thanks for your swimming videos. I am learning to swim after watching your videos . But can you please tell how to exhale air underwater in feestyle through nose or mouth cos I am bit confused in that. Thanks man in advance.
Hi..I am 43 yr old female learning swimming since past 10 days..what i understand from the video is that we have to exhale through our mouth when in water and inhale through our mouth when out of water..is that right?also please tell me how to prevent water from entering the mouth accidentally while inhaling when head is out of the water...coz that's when I start to panic n lose confidence..pls help
Hi Justin, I'm so happy to see ur video. I have taken swimming course for a month and I am still struggling with take a breath when I am swimming. Why u don't pull out ur breath by nose? Thanks
same here, doing a swimming class right now, breathe out via nose, breathe in via mouth, according to my instructor. Can't say, do what works for you because what is the lesson for if you don't follow it. I'm confused too hehe
Thank you Justin for your in Water under! Tips I will begin to put these into practice, as all I have been doing in recent swims! Is swallowing Loads of Water. What country is that pool in? It's massive! we only have small swimming pools In the UK!
hi Justin i prefer to use my nose to breathe out as it gets too much of work for my mouth especially when doing a 5 to 10k swim.Additionally it feels more natural when i breathe out from my nose. Also you should breathe slowly from the nose if you are doing a slow gliding swim or back underwaters
Nice video! At the beginning of the video, freestyle, you have a bit of a crossover though (arms). Might be a coincidence, but try to keep them in front of you, not crossing each other when entering the water. You're using Futura Biofuse goggles (looks similar)? How are they? I was doubting between those and MP Xceed, went with the xceed ones and wasn't disappointed :).
Wow it's crazy how they look so much like Futura Biofuses though lol => www.wigglestatic.com/product-media/5360071155/Speedo-Women-s-Futura-Biofuse-Swimming-Goggles-Swimming-Goggles-Clear-Purple-2015-8-080358180-0.jpg?w=1000&h=1000&a=7
Totally agree with taking in the air fast via the mouth, but why not slowly exhale it out of your nose? It takes about 5 laps of exhales for my nose ways to become fully clear, and I consider this an added benefit. Nose breathing produces more nitric oxide which improves exercise performance. Studies have found that humming also increases nitric oxide production in the nose. While exhaling I find a low-pitched hum is relaxing. You mentioned low-pitched sound in some of your other swim videos, and it works for me. Although the mouth is taking in the air, having the nose involved allows for possible venturi of NO from the nose via mouth breaths - just a theory.
Hey Justin! I know I'm beyond late (cause this video was uploaded in May), but breathing with your mouth; do you exhale fast, slow, or does the pase not matter??
How do you stop water from entering your nose while exhaling through your mouth under water? I was always taught to breath in through the mouth and out through the nose to prevent this from happening. Whenever I try to exhale through my mouth underwater the water instantly shoots up my nose!
i was taught the same long ago, for some people that's the way to go but let me give you a different perspective: go on a treadmill, set it to level 10 or higher, start running and try inhaling with your mouth and out the nose.. what do you notice? :)
I can't get past the first breathing in in front crawl, as I was so focused on to take in air that my body almost stopped. Will you post old swimming videos to this channel, or just new ones in this channel?
ill be posting new swimming videos, just let me know what you wanna learn and ill make a video, also you check out more swimming lessons here: 7dayswim.co
Thanks Justin, I will definitely check that. I think breathing has been my biggest problem and fear, so it would be great if you could talk more in the future
i don’t like to cover entire ears while putting head cap..hence when I exhale, the water bubble tends to fill in ears which makes it disturbing..what to do for that? just practice until you don’t feel it uneasy?

These doesn't happen when am bubbling..kindly give me some suggestions..
thanks sir,for the video ,sir I am getting the same problem while breathing that while inhaling and exhaling water enters into my nose and feels panic ...pls suggest
I just started swimming less than a month ago. I can swim about 20 laps, but I can't do more than 1 length at a time because I'm so tired at the end of each 25 meters I have to stop for 20-30 seconds. Is this normal? Does it mean I'm not breathing correctly?
doing 20 consistent laps is like running a full marathon, sometimes people sprint/use too much force and burn out fast, sometimes people don't have enough stamina to complete a marathon... my suggestion is to build up your stamina in baby steps... 1 lap.. 2 consistent laps... 3 consistent laps... this is what i had to do :)
i feel comfortable in breathing through mouth but my swim instructor says that i seem like having breathe problem because i breathe through mouth..is it true or i should just keep breathing through my mouth?
You can do flip turns blowing bubbles out of the nose to avoid getting chlorine water up your nose. Or you can use a nose plug. Personally I prefer swimming the front crawl while breathing air into my mouth and blowing bubbles out of my nose. That makes it easier to control rate of exhale. And it makes it easy for the flip turn.
Mahendra doshi Just give a good rubb with your tongue on the inside of your googles before you enter the water. They wont get foggy anymore. Professional trick. :)
You can make a homemade version of anti fog spray (and save yourself some money by not having to buy fake spit). You dont have to use real spit either. Recipe: go to a dollar store and buy a small plastic spray bottle (find where travel kits are sold). Fill bottle almost to top with water (distilled or tap). Add 2-3 drops of baby shampoo. Add top, then shake it up. Just spray some of the solution onto the inside of goggles, let it stay there about 20 secs to make a thin film onto the glass. Then turn goggles over so the excess spray goes off the goggle. Now you should be good to go for a swim session.
Great tips, man. Love the videos. Keep them coming... And, as other hormone-infused males have pointed out, thanks for the view at a minute five and at three forty-two.

I'm having to focus to much on blowing water out of my nose.. when i was breathing out of my mouth and my nose was blocked, i could swim longer. so, i'm going back to scuba goggles.. oh well.. also, legendary thumbnail and views 1:042:40
Whenever in the freestyle I try to breath by tilting head on one arm the water goes into ear every time. What to do to stop letting water into the ear? please help
water will always enter your ear, it's a matter of how far down it will enter while swimming, the best thing to prepare yourself is to dunk your head underwater before doing laps, if water clogs your ear (happens to me all the time) it will clear up in a few hours :)
I have problem with my nose wen I come out for taking a big breath my nose is blocked and I have to keep on sniffing it and some water keeps coming out and I don't like the feeling of it
But why do you open your mouth underwater? I mean if we must breathe in from our mouth we need to open it outside the water and in the water we can exhale from our nose. Why do we need to open our mouth under water and let in the chloric water?
I m learning swiming about 2 weeks now, but my body sinks all the time. I m using kickboard and whenever I keep my face beneath water it floats. I really wanna fly in water plz help me.
LOKI the best way to learn how to float is to lay on your back in the water. It requires zero energy and you can keep your nose above the water to breath. After you learn how to float and your back it will be easier to float on your front.
freeze frame at 1:05, that is the thumbnail picture for the preview when seen from other videos. The orange-y bikini bottom blends into the skin tone of that woman exiting the pool, so in the small preview thumbnail she looks like she aint got no bottom : )

I breathe through a 'pffft' way.. anyone know that?

Wow, what are you not good at? Great video Justin.
sitting still haha thanks :)
i'm new to swimming and i find it very hard to exhale underwater idk it just feels weird in my opinion but i got to get use to it quick. Any tips?

doing 20 consistent laps is like running a full marathon, sometimes people sprint/use too much force and burn out fast, sometimes people don't have enough stamina to complete a marathon... my suggestion is to build up your stamina in baby steps... 1 lap.. 2 consistent laps... 3 consistent laps... this is what i had to do :)

Jimisha Chodvadiya I breath through my mouth too
Great video. My question for you is " how do you pretend to have a cold while in the water?"
begin with just submerging your face in the water as demonstrated here: ruclips.net/video/WkCsQOCl66s/видео.html
Hi Justin, I'm beginner, age 41, my trainer says breathe in by mouth and breathout from nose (under water)... Confused...?
breathe in and out using your mouth only, then when you master that move toward nostril exhaling
Thanks for the reply
You can control your bubbles better through your nose..
Do you suggest using snorkel for improving breathing
no, just do the hard work
Thanks

But why do you open your mouth underwater? I mean if we must breathe in from our mouth we need to open it outside the water and in the water we can exhale from our nose. Why do we need to open our mouth under water and let in the chloric water?
You’re not letting in water if it’s being blown out correct? So it’s not getting in if you’re blowing out
I have problem..
When I swim, I can't put my face out of the water! So I have to hold my breath for as long as possible.

1:03 Holy FUCK. When you see it, you'll shit bricks.
Well I learned it with my nose.
After watching this I feel like I wanna swim all day
I like turtles XD bro what is that profile pic my dad has that as his iPhone lock screen
Have you ever been competitive!
no but my students are :)
not going to be mean but i would rather use my nose cause you can let the water bubbles out
true
I’m here because of the still shot
freeze frame at 1:05, that is the thumbnail picture for the preview when seen from other videos. The orange-y bikini bottom blends into the skin tone of that woman exiting the pool, so in the small preview thumbnail she looks like she aint got no bottom : )
haha :)
I would prefer put my head up without googles while swimming
Googles
