Hi Justin! Thanks for making your swim videos. I am 56 and have been afraid of getting water in my face (nose, mouth, eyes) all my life and I swim poorly. A few months ago I went to the Cayman Islands with my boyfriend and he encouraged me to try snorkelling, which I loved. I enjoyed those swimming experiences so much that when I came home I decided to go to the local pool and splash around. I started watching your videos to help me overcome my fears. I bought goggles and a cap and a nose plug. The nose plug really helps because I could never separate my nose breathing from my mouth breathing, and I would panic in the water. By trying out your technique in this video (controlling the water in the mouth), I already have vastly improved my swimming and I'm eager to keep practicing! You give great advice and in such a fun and relaxed way. I really enjoy watching your videos and I thank you for helping me overcome my fear of breathing in the water.
@Catherine Copp very similar here except i also had the fear of my feet and hand not touching anything or anyone in water. And the trip to Caymans was the tipping point where i felt i missed more than half of the fun as i didnt jump in the ocean to snorkel like the rest. Now i have been able to resolve half of my panic but not completely. As in I am ok in shallow waters now but still working on the breathing and as such still not ok in deep water
Justin, I like your analogies, demonstrations, and sense of humor. I've got a goal for my 70th birthday to swim again like I did when I was a kid. I was a little fish. You've given me some good tips to get my rhythm going. Since I bake and cook I totally got the difference in precision. Thanks Justin. I can't wait to try the breathing. I'm a progressing newbie. Today, I actually did a continuous swim and got a rhythm, but went off, but working on it.
Hi justin..I'm from India..this video is very much helpful for my son..my son is a beginner..he had so much fear to swim in water..he saw ur video then he got confident and he tried and as u said he was able to breathe through his mouth..he was very happy..thank u very much justin..
Greeting Justin. I am teaching myself to swim at 50. Your video has helped me tremendously. I am no longer afraid to be in the water. I appreciate the techniques and strategies I've learned. Thanks for your videos.
It happens especially if there are many people in the pool while you're swimming, but you get used to that by time and even notice the wave sometimes and react accordingly. But you shouldn't panick, it's the panick that kills, not a drop or sip of water.
I’ve seen a swimming video that says we have to breath in from the mouth and breath out from the nose and pro swimmers breath out from both but you are doing both just from the mouth. Can u explain what is right here?(I’m a beginner and really do struggle with breathing and the water in my nose and mouth in the water)
No!! Don't brush your teeth. Brushing causes micro tears on your gums, and depending on your dental health, brushing can cause bleeding. Which, if you swim in infected water, could allow bacteria to enter and cause infections. Mouth wash is a better option. But wait a bit before brushing your teeth.
The best and simplest explanation I have ever seen, thank you very much for simplifying the information and clarifying it in such a practical way. I just wish there was more clarification of the appropriate timing to start emptying while swimming as soon as we turn our head to enter the water
My instructor says u shouldn't exhale through mouth In the water and should bubble through nose.. Is it a personal choice and which is a better and more practical way?
I have this same issue! Well I don't have an instructor as of now, but I've always swam for fun here and there since being a kid, and now that I want to do it the "right way" I've read and watched a lot of videos and techniques for breathing while swimming.. Half the vids I watch say to blow out from your nose, and inhale through the mouth, so I'm so confused, and I don't want to learn the incorrect way!! Please reply if you ever got an answer about it being a personal choice, or if it's just an advanced breathing technique?
I’m just saying. I’m a experienced competitive swimmer, when you are swimming, you do not blow bubbles through your mouth 😂. You blow through your nose just enough to get rid of the CO2. The only time that you exhale through your mouth is, just before you take the breath or if you are springing and breathing at high frequency.
Bounce Beat when he was little he said he inhaled water through his mouth so much, that now his body is basically blocking the water out by it self, there fore he can jsut use his mouth 🤷🏼♂️
You're such a cool & funny guy! I wanna learn to swim with you in the pool. I've been struggling ALL MY LIFE having breathing problems while learning swimming, I gave up a lot. Omg, your guidance & tips here are so helpful & gave me all the confidence! God Bless you!
Justin ur videos r awesome...they really help the amateurs..u take the minutest detail to make swim comfortable easy n efficient...keep up the good work
Very impressed. I'm "re-learning" how to swim and appreciate the expert advice you provide. It's always the little things that add up to a big difference. Your videos have me excited to hit the pool.
piyush jaiswal Same! My mother had me in the water at 9 months old, and every instructor I had taught us to exhale through the nose! I'm 43, and I don't know if I can teach myself to exhale through my mouth. It's second nature to exhale through my nose.
oh god, that's why I struggle so much, sometimes crossing 25-30 metres holding breath. don't remember who told me & why I thought INHALE by mouth & under water exhale only by nose. But you say, exhale by mouth.. oh god, how long for next pool time today ?
Hi I am a college swimmer and I'm not saying what your teaching is wrong but rather also the cost of the problem. If you blow the air thru your nose and inhale thru the mouth the chances of getting water in your mouth drop drastically. Just a Tip from a fellow swimmer.
And blowing out thru your nose minimize the air you release with lessen the chance of being out of breath, and if you blow out and inhale thru the mouth your not really getting that much air in your blood, inhale oxygen takes travel time to go through your blood, if you inhale and exhale 100% draw your giving maybe at least 30-50% oxygen through your blood which really isn't efficient, breathing thru the mouth it works, I understand your analogy bigger hole alot more air thats also the issue bigger alot more wasted oxygen, that's why majority of swimmers blows out thru the nose and inhale thru the mouth. 😊😊 Just I'm opinion!! Keep it up!
Christian castro That is my thought, too. For 43 years I was taught to exhale through the nose, and inhale through the mouth. It seems a bit dangerous to inhale, and exhale through the mouth.
LOLOL ... you might want to go back to keeping your mouth closed ... just at 7:00 the guy in the pool is rubbing on his junk like smthng is wrong with it. LOL #PUBEALERT! LOLOLOL HAHAHA J/K, that was priceless though! I love your videos, keep them coming !!!!
Till I hold my breath and doing initial leg and floating it was fine once I start breathing technique end up having water in mouth which makes me sick now am afraid of going to pool still my classes left for freestyle 😪
I can swim in deep water. I fear opening my eyes underwater. In the underwater stage the mind starts to play tricks. In my mind, I picture myself being inside an aquarium shark tank. Yes, it sounds silly but it is reality, a real movie in my mind.
Justin, very good subject you raised. What about swimming in the open water, like rivers, lakes, ocean. Half a year ago I started intensively train in the swimming pool. I have no problem of getting a swimming pool water in the mouth, but I'm afraid when I'll swim free style in OceanMan or Dniepr river marathon and other open water swimming events it might be a problem. So lately I started to control my mouthwash but as you've said it's quite uncomfortable to swim long distance and keep my mouth free from water...
Question Justin: Today the coach did a heart rate test to the masters group,(previously we signed a waiver) consisting in 3x 200 yards, 1 easy (test heart rate) and 2,intense (and test heart rate again after 1’ rest) Then he conduct the full sesión of drills consisting of: 3x 150 yard splits, 3 x 100 splits, 1x100 easy, 1x 100 kikck board, 2x200 split, 3x150 split, 1x 100 pull buoy and 2x100 digging stoke hard and finish with 1x100 easy. Everything free style My question is: What do you suggest or recommend for recovery, since we all finished pretty exhausted immediate after the session. Any recovery beverage? Or something. I had to go to the supermarket after the session, and I have to use an electric wheelchair cart because had absolutely no energy Thank you for your kind reply
My problem is inhaling the water on the side during a freestyle. I don't do it on purpose but it happens and then I stop everything cuz I'm dying x.x How do I stop? Just practice?
very helpful video. very few mention this issue i think most swimmers have . not that i care about dirty water. i just want to be able to breather without panicking that water will enter my nose and lungs
I found your comment helpful How to I stop water from getting into my mouth when breathing. Do I need to make a shape with my lips to avoid the water entering into my mouth. Please help.
Just discovered your site! Most descriptive instruction I've seen yet! I'm trying to wean away from using a nose clip while I swim. I don't seem to be getting enough oxygen. However every time I take it off it feels like I'm being waterboarded. LOL do you have any instructions addressing this? This particular instruction was awesome, thank you. I noticed that you do not exhale through the nose. Is that correct? Really appreciate your teaching method.
Thanks for demo.i will try this today,So as per your video i gather that the trick is to breathe while some water is still inside mouth.i was under conception that water should not enter the mouth and so was doing like the way you showed not to do it, but still it was getting swallowed inside too.
I mean yeah, but usually there are other pple swimming around creating waves and splashing, I always end up swallowing lot of the water. I'm gonna give it a try tho next time
So I always have like a huge panic attack when I'm Swimming and I enter into a deeper section after swimming from water where I can touch. Do you have any advice to help me
Thanks for video, ITS really very helpfull to anyone learning How to swim. Learning tictnik as Well , such as breathing problem , and others. Thank you so much.
So I'm currently taking swimming lessons and my instructor wants me blowing air out of my nose. I feel like I have better control if I exhale through my mouth and it's not so frantic. I'm more used to taking big breaths and exhaling through my mouth after 4 years of marching band in high school. I played the tuba. So lots of air and control needed. When I mentioned this she said she wanted me to exhale through my nose so no water would go up there. Does water actually go up if using your mouth? I haven't practiced this on my own yet. So, I'm curious.
Are we not suppose to release air inside the water through nose ?? My problem is .. water goes inside my nose while I try to inhale some air through mouth
such a cute guy you are..😅 i am a poor swimmer...i think all the air ends up in my stomach instead of lungs when i take breath..i dont know wot the real problem is...am i just panicking or wot😩
Hi Justin, You said the trick is not to suck in the pocket of water which is there in the mouth but can you plz explain how to control that water and taking in only air.
What to do when you loose balance while swimming in deep water and How to get back in control and set your balance back , Is there any challenges we have to face like hold breath or is there any simpler way to get out of this.
Hi ! Ik im late but i juss subscribed to ur channel I’m 14 nd I have been watchin a few of ur videos bc I’m in the process of teachin my self how to swim I alr knew how to float on my back nd dive nd come bacc to the top of the water but ur videos have helped me learn ways to keep the water out of my throat nd the bacc of my nose nd also helped me with my fear of goin to deep in the pool all I’m waitin for now is to test out the stuff yhu have taught me tysm !!
Now I’m thinking Justin that the people teaching me how to swim don’t know what they are doing they aren’t telling me these things at all in fact someone told me I can blow bubbles out my nose and not my mouth now I went back to blowing bubbles out my mouth but they didn’t tell us that we need to keep our mouth open and have our lip in the water and they didn’t tell us to keep our mouth open in the water and blow bubbles either
Your videos are so helpful. I do have a question. I have decided to make swimming my main activity for fitness. I am contemplating joining the Master's program as they do you give you a good workout in the pool from trained coaches. They watch you in the water and tailor exercises for you. I know all of the strokes and do them pretty well, most of the time I breathe well. Some of my old fears are coming back a little and I know to relax and say reassuring things to myself. The issue around the breathing. I sometimes get a small drop of water when I take a breath that flies back in my mouth and I choke a little. It's very annoying as I do have to stop because of it sometimes. What doesn't help is that many years ago I had a bad scare while doing my lap swimming. As I rolled my head to take a big breath a guy in the other lane executed his stroke at that moment.( I had noticed this guy never got his arms fully out of the water (freestyle) and made huge splashes. Well, one of the splashes got me just as inhaled-deeply). That water went right into my lungs, hurt like hell and produced immediate choking that made me sink like a rock. (He found this hilarious and laughed). At the last minute, I grabbed the lane divider and yanked myself back up to the surface, all the while terrified. I was coughing so hard I could not swim the few feet to the wall in front of me. The lifeguard was reading and never noticed. I could not talk so I couldn't call out for help. By using my arms mostly, I pulled myself along the lap divider thing to get to the wall. I managed to get myself part way out of the pool. The upper half of my body was lying on the deck on my stomach while coughing my lungs off. It really hurt. The lower half of my body still in the pool. It seemed to take forever until I could roll the rest of my body out of the pool and get on my side, eventually pushing myself up and then getting up to leave. I was slightly sick to my stomach by then, and still coughing. I had a burning sensation in my throat, chest, and in my nasal passages. I still could not talk. The lifeguard still did not notice anything. I was scared and pissed off. It didn't stop me from swimming but I no longer trust lifeguards to pay any attention. Okay, so back to now. During my swim on Friday when I felt that bit of water going back there I was able to stop my breath and just swallow. It worked in so far as I didn't get choked and continue swimming my freestyle but by the end of the hour-long session I had swallowed more than I wanted too but happy I didn't choke. I wasn't very much water but you know, I don't really want to swallow that! LOL I know as I progress, I'll get better and not be having this happen but I am wondering what I can do to prevent this from happening. Can you help?
Hi Justin, I have been watching quite a few other videos that introduced how to breathe. I have to say ur one was much more practical for me and taught me how to block the windpipe and allow water to be in my mouth by lowering my jaw. Could you pls also share how to breathe when doing a flip turn while swimming freestyle? When doing a flip turn, the water enters my nose and I panic. Thanks, Emily
I am 42 and finally learned how to swim (self-taught). I can't wait to try this later. Breathing is not very intuitive. Thanks for the video.
I have been breathing incorrectly my whole life!!! never took official swim lessons. But thanks to you, i am learning on my own.

Lol dude I didn’t even have those thoughts of buggers or pubic hair getting into my mouth. Thanks for that. Awesome video though!
just about to comment that!
It's boogers not buggers ( not trying to hate)
Ew.
This is why I swim in my own pool and control the chemistry myself : )
Right! I said the same.

What if an unexpected wave of water comes in contact with you mouth as you are breathing in?
Yeah, it happens for me too.
I start coughing and panicking

It happens especially if there are many people in the pool while you're swimming, but you get used to that by time and even notice the wave sometimes and react accordingly. But you shouldn't panick, it's the panick that kills, not a drop or sip of water.

Can u explain what is right here?(I’m a beginner and really do struggle with breathing and the water in my nose and mouth in the water)
swimming is all about controlling your breath in water
You cover good topics which are often overseen by other tutor channels
No!! Don't brush your teeth. Brushing causes micro tears on your gums, and depending on your dental health, brushing can cause bleeding. Which, if you swim in infected water, could allow bacteria to enter and cause infections. Mouth wash is a better option. But wait a bit before brushing your teeth.
I get water in my mouth when I go to breathe during front crawl.. how do I avoid that?
The best and simplest explanation I have ever seen, thank you very much for simplifying the information and clarifying it in such a practical way. I just wish there was more clarification of the appropriate timing to start emptying while swimming as soon as we turn our head to enter the water

I got nasal congested issue while in water so i prefer his style.
Ahhhh!! YEARS of swimming lessons as a kid but I never knew how to breathe efficiently. Thank you!
Love your style of teaching , really instructive and makes me laugh as you point out all the things I am doing wrong !
I swim in the sea and it is really hard for me to get used to the salty water in my mouth...🤔

Yes even I exhale through my nose
I exhale on both....

I drink a lot of the swimming pool water lmao 😂 kinda drown a little
So I'm currently taking swimming lessons and my instructor wants me blowing air out of my nose.
Should be fine using ur mouth. Just try and u will find out
Are we not suppose to release air inside the water through nose ?? My problem is .. water goes inside my nose while I try to inhale some air through mouth
such a cute guy you are..😅 i am a poor swimmer...i think all the air ends up in my stomach instead of lungs when i take breath..i dont know wot the real problem is...am i just panicking or wot😩
I never thought of the hairs or bugars now I’m going to be grossed out of opening my mouth in the watter
Hi Justin,. Your videos help me a lot and your swimming techniques are awesome.
You everytime ,every video you swim in different pools 😋😉☺☺☺
Hi Justin, You said the trick is not to suck in the pocket of water which is there in the mouth but can you plz explain how to control that water and taking in only air.
What to do when you loose balance while swimming in deep water and How to get back in control and set your balance back , Is there any challenges we have to face like hold breath or is there any simpler way to get out of this.

And btw you are cute!!
Can you help?
film your swimming an post it in the group for us to give you feedback: facebook.com/groups/442458012814220/
Did you see it? I posted it up there in the FB group.
I have troubles breathing in freestyle, I miss exhaling before inhaling, so I never get enough with fresh air. After 10 meters Im totally exhausted.
Thanks you helped me a lot
I am leaning to swim rite now, aren’t we suppose to breathe out from nose when under water?
Hi what we should do with the tongue while taking a breath? To stop water coming into the mouth?
Very good video..very helpful
hey, should i hold my breath while diving
Can you teach me How To Not suck up the water with my nose cause I have that problem and My Mouth I just need Some Thing for my eyes
This episode is really helpful.
Super super as a beginner I was closing my mouth will practice
You ara a good teacher.Thank you so much .
Good analogy, helpful tips
So you inhale when you're about to go down and you exhale when you're in the water?
correct :)
So you exhale every giving point that your in the water and once you've done exhaling you come up for more air?
Hi Justin, I have been watching quite a few other videos that introduced how to breathe. I have to say ur one was much more practical for me and taught me how to block the windpipe and allow water to be in my mouth by lowering my jaw.
Could you pls also share how to breathe when doing a flip turn while swimming freestyle? When doing a flip turn, the water enters my nose and I panic.
Thanks, Emily
just have to practice exhaling constantly while turning upside down (doing two things at once)
