As a swim instructor and a lifeguard I can tell you the most important thing is to remain calm. Most people are buoyant and will float so long as you relax. If you don't, your muscles will tense up and that is what causes you to sink. If you have no confidence in your skills, remain calm and do not move. Wait for someone to come get you. Deep, slow breaths and please relax.
I do 5 km lake crossings alone each day during the summer in Switzerland and although I know that it is dangerous at age 61 I can't not keep swimming. In Thailand I did a 6 miles swim with a partner but without any preparation in terms of checking the currents...this was very unwise. I sometimes feel scared in the middle of the lake but then re-compose myself. I think that it is a form of acting out and playing Russian roulette with fate. I do have a Bay Watch float trailing me on a string behind me and I cheat using fins. I was pushed into a pool when I was young and also saw three people drown in the sea in France and was very scared of swimming. I think that there is a transcending element in my behavior.
I learned when I was maybe 13 years old because I wouldn’t go swimming often and had my own drowning experience. I think the way I learned was by practicing the same movements in the shallow end as a kid. Then moving on to the sides of the pool. Always have someone who can swim with you and try your best to not freak out because you’ll only lose energy and possibly make it harder for someone to save you. Im 19 now and pretty confident in my swimming ability but I would never underestimate any body of water.

Tips from me 1 - When your lungs are full of air your body will float on its own. 2 - When you are doing the legs make sure the legs are bend only 10% and you have to also point your toes. 3 - If you took a dive in deep water and your body isnt going up or down and your stuck in middle, start moving your legs and push the water down wards so you can come up. ( Your coach will tell you how to do it). 4 - If you are scared of diving, tell your coach when it's your turn to push you or tell your friend, and if your diving like in 6ft make sure before jumping put your hands up then jump, this is because then people will know that you can't can up. Thats it :)
if you are diving and are in a really deep water its important to watch were is up and where is down, in the water it is complicated to notice the direction where you are going
@@ivanbernat3288 We are able to find any direction by making bubble out of air from our mouth, the direction of the bubbles will be the direction of surface of water. I have been using this technique since years and this technique literally saved my life several times.

Waves, wind and currents make swimming more difficult. 8. Do not attempt to swim further than you have before in isolated conditions. 9. If you are in trouble call for help, wave an arm but remember to breathe at regular intervals. 10. The temperature of the water affects how long you can safely swim, as the colder the water the less time you can swim for. 11. Clothing makes it harder to swim, but you might loose less body heat with tight fitting clothing. 12. The larger your surface area the more heat you loose.
Yeah I don't think that's how you swim. What my big sister taught me was to put your hands on like a board or on the side of a pool and kick you legs. You're legs can be bent a little bit and you always need to point your feet. Then when you are okay, make sure to use a board they use at indoor water parks or pools and bring your arm under and then over the water and then put your hand back on the board and then keep repeating that until you feel ready to swim. You're whole entire body should be flat in the water.
As someone who got caught in one of those tides at the beach--I wish I had known that little fact before. I used up *all* of my strength trying to get back to shore. I had to be saved by the lifeguard and a friend.
After years of not actually swimming, my school puts up swimming as our focus in PE for one semester last year and I attended only 2/10 or more classes because I was that afraid. This year tho, I skipped the first 2 classes then I finally got the motivation to do it because people believed in me overcoming my fear so I joined and in just maybe 3 or 4 classes I'm surprised I actually am kinda doing freestyle nicely already :D
I love the how to survive and what to do and not do series. I was surprised that along with new things, I actually knew a lot of things that I had forgotten. It's like a refresher course. Thank You. I've been subscribed to your channel for a long time and have loved the content.
Easy for you to say. I was spooked when I was little. I have dyspraxia a coordination problem. My lovely father threw me into mother's beach (beach water comes in but no waves) at Marina Del Rey in Los Angeles when I was about 5 years old not knowing THEN that I indeed had and still have dyspraxia. Next thing I knew, someone rescued me-from this day til now-I trust nobody to teach me how to swim and float. However I do like getting into a pool and take a deep breath and dive underwater even opening my eyes for a short minute while having my feet planted on the floor of the pool. Huge pools scare me-I get panicky-cause I fear someone trying to drag me into the deep end. If someone could cure my dyspraxia, maybe it may change me. With this condition I don't know how to ride a bike as well as this too requires coordination.
When I was working in my dad's subsidary company in RAICHUR district (A place in KARNATAKA state) in INDIA (country) as a SOLAR Engineer Trainee, I went to a nearby fresh water lake along with my colleagues. I remember that I was literally drowning at one point in the lake where my colleague quickly noticed and saved me. I'm very much thankful to him for this. From that day the fear of water increased for me and it took me almost 2 years to get rid of that fear when I went again for swimming along with my MBA friends to a resort. But seriously, I agree that we should get rid of the fear of water and should get trained properly on swimming. I'm planning for this in next month.
I have overcome my fear of water. 🏊♀️ I joined a triathlon team and could not swim. Now guess who swims in the lake 18 “ feet deep. It’s about comfort levels. At first I learned how to float then I bought fins. I could go back and forth in the pool on my back only. Then one day I turned over and discovered the water supported me . On my back or stomach. Thanks to Derrick Milligan my swim Coach for his consistency and dedication.Learned at 45 now I’m 61 .
When I was little I would just jump into the deep end because I wanted to swim so badly. My mom notice before I did it and saved me. I did this multiple times, you’d think I’d learn my lesson. I was too short for the shallow end so I learned how to swim on the stairs of the pool. Edit: I thought this video would be about life of death situations when your stranded in the middle of the ocean.
Today my father saved me from drowning,i had gone to learn swimming in the canal and suddenly my stamina hesitated and got into 12ft deep my body was filling with water and had lost the hope but at end my dad came saved my life
I'm a brown kid. I was taught swimming by my dad. I learnt swimming by swimming and drowning and drinking water through nose (not dangerous though. My dad was looked after me carefully)😂😂 Anyone with me? Just me? Okay.😂
Nayel NYL meh, but not by dad , by coach but Similar condition tho! 😂..It's my 15th day im done with it but just breathing prob somewhat u must know! 😅
It took me forever to learn how to swim. But i can barely do it. But if i had to jump or was thrown in deep water i can get out. I just want to learn how to tread water, swim underwater and not tire out quickly. But i dont have a pool and i dont want to go to a public one
last year i went to the beach with family and i have already watched this video before hand and i dont know how to swim in deep water but to save myself i had to remember the things from this video and it went well, i was quire nervous because i was drowning but then i remembered this video and it saved my life
I'm having so much anxiety trying to watch this and to better myself or to overcome my fear but i just cant - ill come back again, mark this date 5/19/19
I've never been inside a swimming pool ever. I do remember as a teenager I got into our domestic water tank - about 500 liters because I so desperately wanted to know how to swim). Fast forward several decades and I now live and work in a coastal city. Today was my very first day in a swimming pool (for swimming lessons). Session lasted only one hour. It's over 8 hours ago and I'm still asking myself, "Why on earth didn't I do this earlier????????!!!". Oh, by the way, I'm a little over 50 years old. 🙂
Carol Harris now THAT is some great info. I hope I never have to use it, but rest assured i'm filing it away for safe keeping. I don't swim well and went snorkeling for the first time, I'd never even been in the ocean before. I utilized something I saw on a 'cave diving/disaster movie'- where the explorers reminded each other to never stop breathing while under water. even though I was snorkling and not deep sea diving, the fact that I remembered to keep breathing in and out helped curtail being overwhelmed with anxiety of feeling VULNERABLE and insignificant in the ocean. I was able to enjoy the ref life. we didn't get any instructions prior to going out. I think the guides assumed we wouldn't be going in if we couldn't swim. and I initially underestimated the ocean. dog paddling in a 12 foot deep pool has NOTHING to do with ocean swimming.
I feel like in the video, some information wasn’t too clear with tip #2. As a lifeguard, it’s actually not good to hold your breath underwater or do multiple laps underwater. When doing so, you might hyperventilate before going underwater, which can be very harmful and many deaths have occured in military trainings and even well-trained swimmers. You can still do one lap underwater if you’re well trained but don’t hyperventilate before, just take a big breath before going underwater. If you force yourself to stay underwater you can faint and then drown... please be careful

Clothing makes it harder to swim, but you might loose less body heat with tight fitting clothing. 12. The larger your surface area the more heat you loose.

You did number 5 twice.

I CAN SWIM YAAAY!

I'm planning for this in next month.
swimming is really nice and calming, i've been swimming since 4 years and now im 16
Nice animations to make people realized swimming was not that hard thank you for uploding such a videos it is actually helped me alot😂
Very cool 😘😍😄😁
Imma kid and I'm learning to swim in school. This video helped me a lot!
One can always take swimming lessons and its never too late to learn any new skills.
Thank you for sharing this👊

Should have done that before Summer. Imagine how many people could have prevented drowning this Summer ! ! ! ! ! !
steve b dude you think they got time to watch youtube videos ? Are you kidding ?
When I was little I would just jump into the deep end because I wanted to swim so badly. My mom notice before I did it and saved me. I did this multiple times, you’d think I’d learn my lesson. I was too short for the shallow end so I learned how to swim on the stairs of the pool. Edit: I thought this video would be about life of death situations when your stranded in the middle of the ocean.

Laughing while drowning in water...water is a very good friend remember to laugh
first swimming style i did was just paddling and trying to stay above the water but ive progressed so much now and im learning the dolphin kick.
"feel the water support yo-" wave crashes ontop of me, *I go tumbling down and get knocked out by some rock and drown*
how'd you expect me to stay calm when I drown. i will freak out so I will never float 😨😨
Just hold your breath while on your back and wait to go above water then exhale quick and take another deep breath and after a few seconds repeat.

It took me forever to learn how to swim. But i can barely do it. But if i had to jump or was thrown in deep water i can get out. I just want to learn how to tread water, swim underwater and not tire out quickly. But i dont have a pool and i dont want to go to a public one
Adam Benton just relax and you will float to the top, once there get in a horizontal position and swim to safety.
jogmas12 im not afraid of water or swimming just not good at it. I swim like maybe 2 times a year total if that.

I'm having so much anxiety trying to watch this and to better myself or to overcome my fear but i just cant - ill come back again, mark this date 5/19/19
Hey
Hii
I've never been inside a swimming pool ever.
I do remember as a teenager I got into our domestic water tank - about 500 liters because I so desperately wanted to know how to swim). Fast forward several decades and I now live and work in a coastal city. Today was my very first day in a swimming pool (for swimming lessons). Session lasted only one hour. It's over 8 hours ago and I'm still asking myself, "Why on earth didn't I do this earlier????????!!!".
Oh, by the way, I'm a little over 50 years old. 🙂
I'm a professional swimmer, why tf I'm watching it
Warey you just want likes

Ive go swimming in my new school and i cant swim and people might laugh when they found out i can swim :^(
Its my first year in middle school
I’m a slow swimmer and idk how to float in deep deep water😂
I know how to swim but I just wanna know how to float in deep water
What you have to do in order how to float is you have to go on your back and shape yourself as a star.
Mario Torres I’m a slow swimmer and can’t swim at all
Same
Floating in deep water is the same as floating in not deep water
I literally watched ur video i jumped into 10feet nearly dying but my friend saved me
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐very helpful 😉👍
I feel like in the video, some information wasn’t too clear with tip #2. As a lifeguard, it’s actually not good to hold your breath underwater or do multiple laps underwater. When doing so, you might hyperventilate before going underwater, which can be very harmful and many deaths have occured in military trainings and even well-trained swimmers. You can still do one lap underwater if you’re well trained but don’t hyperventilate before, just take a big breath before going underwater. If you force yourself to stay underwater you can faint and then drown... please be careful
Thanks for teaching me how to swim
I learned to swim myself. And I learned to swim underwater before learning to tread water. 😂
Same
Queen Kay I learned to swim underwater before learning how to swim on the surface lol
Well I could swim since 5 I took lessons then...and my mom isn't a good swimmer.
