Let me know if you have tried any of the method discussed above. Which method is easiest for you to pick up? Do you have any other way to keep yourself afloat? Cheers....
the easiest is the bicycle kick but it's not good. the one i do when I'm in a relatively shallow pool is I simply go down and jump off the floor and take a breath on the surface, it's not tiring and also fun to do.
I've been learning as a new swimmer off and on during the various lockdowns and I can tread water for 3 minutes now! So proud of myself, especially as I've almost drowned multiple times in my life and had a fear of being out of my depth. I figure of 8 with my hands and vertical breast stroke with my feet. Could never coordinate with that last foot action, but I'll give it a try now that I'm better at it. I've also realised that when I go slow and don't panic, just feel the water supporting you, you use a lot less energy and can breathe almost normally, even as an asthmatic. Thanks for the tips.
Hi Average Joe. Are you on Facebook and Instagram? I would like to follow you. I really could use to ask for support in becoming a better swimmer. I would like to participate more in triathlons. Thank you in advance. How can I find you? Under what names please?
I never properly learned how to swim, nor did i get taught how to water tread. I almost drowned when i was 6 and have been scared of deep waters ever since. I'm 5'7" and sometimes the 5 ft end of the pool scares me because my head is just barely above the water. This video was very helpful, thank you! :)
One important point is to also learn how to float on your back, something you can and should always resort to help relax if anxious or tired from treading or swimming.
Thanks for this. I only just learned to swim in my 40s as I had a very close drowning episode in my life when I was 7. I had fear of the water. My partner pushed me to learn and I can now swim but I can't tread for some reason. This helps a lot. I will give this a go 👍🏾
I almost died in a hotel pool deep end when I was 10, causing fear of drowning thus unable to relax in water. I have been learning how to swim since last year, now able to do breaststroke and free style. However, threading water in deep end is still difficult for me. I am going to add this drill to my daily pool time. Thank you coach Joe!
Same happened with me in childhood when my friend saved me from drowning in his pool. But that was because of my stupidity to dive into a pool with open mouth underwater and then panicking, drinking water. Now I'm 40, went to a lake's beach end, relaxed and floated suddenly, pushed myself forward and viola....learnt swimming on my own. Swam underwater in shallow waters for a good distance. All through I just stayed very calm and relaxed. Treading in deep water is something that excites me more but I will take it one step at a time. Make sure to have at least 1-2 swimmers with you and take all necessary safety precautions in advance.
@@naniidoodles you can do it! I did it at almost 60. Since my comment I managed to practice almost everyday, improving both styles and can tread water in deep end now. I’ve also lost fat and gained muscle.
Dense same. Well I may not be 38 but I can't swim. I've been trying to learn how to swim for years I even had taken a swimming class but no luck. I hope this year we both will learn how to swim
Just learned how to tread yesterday. It was hard to do when it isnt deep enough. But a lot more easy when when your in the deep end. Just stay close to the side of the pools and dont panic
My son is a child with special needs. We tried to learn basic swimming techniques but he started water treading. We don't know about this technique even it's name. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
Thank you for the tutorial. I only see egg beater legs, and figure 8 hands. Thank you for showing us other techniques. You have true compassion, that is the sharing of love (knowledge/skills) with others, especially with us strangers.
If you can explain how to +show the movement slowly (for a longer period of time) the figure 8 arm movement (sculling) and the "egg beater" movement of the legs, instead of just saying it and briefly do it in the water.; then it would help more. Because with a longer slow visual of the movement, the learner can better immitate and replicate what you are teaching. Thank you.🙏
My coach taught me this by swimming me to the deep end of the pool, and leaving me there. First couple times i followed him, but then i got what he was trying to have me do. Float on my own.
I am back here to say thank you. The tip is to differentiate the sculling and breast stroke movement. Sculling is the best way but my shoulders were sore
You are doing god’s work by this video. It could literally save lives! Thankyou so much for this very informative and detailed video. Will definitely try treading now!
This is such a wonderful and easy to understand tutorial. Great job! One thing, Synchronized Swimmers and Water Polo players do Eggbeater kick in the opposite direction from what is shown here. Both legs should be making circles inward, not outward. Otherwise, beautifully done, Dad! ❤
This is an excellent step by step guide to a critical self-assist technique. The combination of careful explanation with an underwater demonstrations appeals to a range of learning styles. Thank you!
I had never learnt swimming. Couple months ago my kayak flipped over in a deep lake. While I had a life-vest, it was not tied properly. As such I was floating sideways and had much trouble with breathing. Luckily I had a few friends around who helped me out and dragged me to the shore. Since then I had developed a strong fear towards water. However, I wish to overcome this fear by finally learning how to swim, in order to survive and possibly enjoy the waters. Thank you for this video!
This is most useful video... Thank you... I have benefitted a lot from you.... My dream has come true when I proudly flaunt that I can stay afloat in deep waters
I find it really interesting how something that is second nature to me had never been taught to others. Treading water is very useful, but I am a lifeguard and it is one of the skills I see the least of. It is actually on the lifeguard exam, you have to tread water without your arms for two minutes.
Now this is useful as well, because i watch a video of how to swim. Now this make learn how to float. Thanks for this video tutorial! This will help me a lot!

I have been learning swimming for roughly 1.5 months now (through coach, in a batch of 20-25 people) and the coach is trying to teach us to stay at one place in water in between swimming from one end to the other. This is specifically tough for me and I am stuck at this point, as I am 5 ft and the most shallow end of the pool is 5.5 ft, so I get scared when I try to stop moving forward in water and then I eventually start going down and drown a bit, although slowly. I'll try implementing this method when I am in the pool tomorrow.
Thank you. That's really helpful!👏👏👏You made it look simple and easy enough for me to follow. I'm quite sure this will help me conquer my fear of drowning. I've subscribed.🙏😊

Very true. Make a star shape with your arms and legs outstretched to float on back.
