I am finding myself commenting on every tutorial of yours. Seriously. I'm a beginner and have completed learning freestyle in a month and gaining a little bit of stamina. Now, I want to be able to do breaststroke, swim underwater, come to the surface, flip, and tread. I've been consuming a lot of content for these both on reddit and other RUclips channels. I've found your content to be the best. You tell many things others simply don't very systematically and it's VERY EASY to just pick up your entire video and practice it in the pool the next day. So, thanks a lot!
I know the feeling. I've been swimming for 20 years but I can only tread water for a short time. I lack the coordination for the egg beater technique so I use the breaststroke kick which is less efficient.
Love this video! and it explains the steps really well. Whenever i've asked people before how to tread water the usual response is "it's easy! just move your legs" - which isn't very helpful when you're learning. I love floating like shown in step 1 of finding bouyancy and really comfortable with that. Floating on my back I find difficult at the moment as I tend to panic i'll go underwater when I feel myself turning onto my back and my legs lifting towards the surface, which obviously doesn't help, so I think that just needs practice then I can move onto learning to actually tread water.
Hannah Barrick yes, it really comes down to becoming comfortable by establishing your inner buoyancy first (#1 priority). Once you are comfortable to safely float, then the rest follows. 🙌🏼🏊🏼♀️ Enjoy your practice Hannah and thank you for watching! -Coach Mandy
The main problem I’ve experienced with floating on the surface of the water is understanding that what you think of as a straight body is not straight when you are in water. The pelvis needs to be pointed into the air and keeping a semi-tight core helps.
Comfort is important. Your body movement in water is key, and the more comfortable you are the less tense you are, the easier it will be. Remember, its not about fast or hard, its about efficient. Small/Short and Choppy movements wont displace a lot of water and you will expel a lot of energy that way, longer smooth motions will go a longer way to displace more water and you wont be exhausted in a minute or two.
I thought I was treading wrong the whole time because it feels like you’re flailing in the water (which you kinda are but it’s intentional) and this helped me relearn and recall how to tread water! I can swim and float really well but I have to work on treading fs. Good vid!
Hi asheea, lol I definitely understand. It’s really more about allowing yourself to relax and feel supported by the water. Hi, we’re you able to get PADI certified? I’m working towards the same goals of getting scuba certified as well. So far, I can do the swimming portion but can’t properly tread water yet. I tried sculling with my hands and arms while doing the egg beater with my legs but for some reason, I can’t stay afloat above water and I keep sinking. Therefore, am I missing something? It’s weird because I can float above water for over 10 mins on my back but can’t tread water yet.
@@matthewsoohoo6903 Same here. Were you able to get PADI certified? I get exhausted after treading for a couple of minutes, don't understand how others can do it for ten.
I’m currently taking lessons how to tread water and still face challenges to coordinate all steps even though I’m not afraid or panic at all while I’m under the water (I swim well) and that makes me frustrated a bit at myself (why?) There’s a middle-age man in the pool I see that he can tread the water for more than one hour with sculling & flutter kick and still looks effortless. I couldn’t explain myself why it’s still very challenging to me 😵💫
What's hard isn't breathing, it's really just the movements of the legs. For me personally, it's hard to focus on moving my legs correctly while also syncing my hands and arms AND my breathing. Loved the video nonetheless, it made sense, unlike many.
LavaOreSheep yeah, I definitely understand. It’s having the coordination to move the arms and legs at the same time. However, in my latest video on treading, you can still tread with isolation just the legs or just the arms. I have it linked here: ruclips.net/video/jfAo6gCy9SI/видео.html Hope this helps shed more light on this subject. Enjoy your practice! -Coach Mandy
Treading is more about floating than actually treading and being perfectly okay with sinking a little bit until you find your internal buoyancy. Once you’ve established that, you just move your arms and legs to feel the water and gently support yourself a little higher. Moving your legs is not where you get your most of the lift from since you will get very tired and it’s not as efficient 🙌🏽🏊🏼♂️ -Coach M
Not really because I don’t have much tension in my body. The only time it is tiring is having to move your legs and arms fast to lift your body out of the water as they do in water polo. But to just tread to stay in place you feel the water with slight resistance. The harder you work, the more resistance you create. I have another video going through the arm and foot motion for treading here: ruclips.net/video/jfAo6gCy9SI/видео.html Best, Coach Mandy
No need to fear because you know that to prevent drowning just go to a horizontal position and glide (swim) towards the wall. Here what helped me. I would push off on my back from the wall, then, I would reversed my position, like you are doing a sit-up, now I’m swimming on my front, towards the wall. In between this transition, you momentarily do tread water for a brief moment as you roll forward. This is a great exercise/skill to learn. This help you obtain good body control in the water while incorporating treading
Yes, 🙌 it is so beneficial. Priority number 1 is to relax. This will allow the water to fully support you. Enjoy your practice Mark and welcome to the channel! 🏊♂️😄 -Coach Mandy
I've been watching all your videos in the past 6 months. Great tips. I have to laugh about treading water. I have no problem treading water. I don't have to move my legs around, just my arms. I might win a treading contest one day!😂🤣😂🤣 It must be the extra fat I carry!
I always knew how to swim in straight line back and forth, it's just staying afloat was a little tricky. I would be able to do it but not for a long time, an I think that was because bad technique and moving a little too fast. Trying to get my best at swimming and all kinds of techniques.
Haven't been in pool for over a year now because off covid 19 so am going back in tomorrow need trip about warm up without burn out will be in the pool for a full hour .
I scull with my hands but I use a scissor type kick. I'm 67 years old and have hip arthritis. The scissor allows me to tread an hour at a time without needing to flex that bad hip outwardly.
conscience if you kick fast, you’re tense, and not relaxed. This will make you sink further! It’s all about finding your buoyancy and feeling the water to sit up higher. Try this Skills in a shallow pool especially just getting comfortable on your back.👍🏼 You’ve got this! -Coach Mandy 🏊🏼♂️
Do you give other swimming tips? I’m a very inefficient poor swimmer, I can’t tread water or stay afloat well. I’m going to practice what you’ve mentioned in this video though so thanks

I’ve taken deep water swimming lessons but it didn’t help. The threading technique here, can i practice this on shallow water? At least 5 feet of water?
Hi Liv, welcome to the channel! Yes, you can definitely practice treading water in shallow water which is preferred first to get used to the movement. In one of my demos here I’m treading in shallow water. You don’t need much space to work on this skill. Enjoy your practice be sure to stay connected for more! -Coach Mandy 🏊♂️

I have always used the scissor kick. The egg beater is too much wobblying. The scissor kick keeps you in a sleek mode, similar to fish. Sleek. Along with your arms and hands cupped in a constant sideways figure 8 motion.
Lori Jondron yes, that is another great alternative shown in one of the older videos on the channel. It looks more like a vertical flutter kick but can be harder for those learning how to stabilize especially for guys who have lower profiles. Glad the scissor kick works! 👏🏼😄 -Coach Mandy

Boy was I lucky,, I, m glad I learnt how to relax in the water as a kid in the local community baths. never give a thought, just started to tread without thinking copying our pe teacher,, so, that's the key,, Don, t expect major results,, its a natural development,, just flay your limbs to feel your buoyancy begin working, the rest comes with time,,

Nice vid. I'm trying to get my siblings brother and sister to know how to swim, but getting them to know how to tread water would be a better start. When I started learning to tread water i tried a few techniques but I believe I caught on to the frog kick best to stay afloat. Quick question please. I started to learn with some instructors about a month ago. Kicking & the belly up and down exercises seem fine but I still have problems treading as I seem to go down too easily 🥲. I've got a question... The shallowest part of the pool where I go is 1.82 and I'm 1.76... Is this a problem and do you thinki should start with a smaller pool where I can get to stand at any point whilst I learn to tread?. Thanks

I like to scull and alternate between scissor kick and frog kick, drawing me knees up close to my body after each kick. Relaxed, and slow/low energy kicks keep me afloat all day
Hi Vanessa. I totally understand where you’re coming from lol. It’s actually more about floating than actually treading. Once you find your buoyancy and are comfortable knowing your body will sink and bob up and down the rest is easy to understand. I would advise to spend your time in the cannonball formation demonstrated at the beginning of the video and just be suspended on the water so you feel your natural buoyancy. From there, spend time getting really comfortable floating in all positions - especially on your back. That is the first step before going into full tread mode. Hope this helps and definitely keep me posted! -Coach Mandy 🙌🏽🙏🏽🏊🏼♀️
Very interesting, this breathing technique I do naturally and wanted to see if it was actually a thing I can just float without moving but I am overweight so that probably helps lol
So do you drive the heal and foot DOWN and cc ( For right foot for example) into the water to "push up" or more like a propeller where you only need to move in a rotational motion -not down
Yes, great question. If you are really trying to lift your whole body out of the water with power then it is driving the heal down but it is not sustainable for long. However, to be as efficient as possible, the heal does move down but it is not a drive same motion just not so much effort there. Yes, it does create a sort of propeller motion. I have a more detailed version of this point here: ruclips.net/video/edA6roXqQSs/видео.html Enjoy your practice! -Coach Mandy 🏊♂️
Nice work! You’ve got this. Keep moving forward and remember, it’s more about staying relaxed to help you stay higher on the surface. 🙌 Enjoy your practice! -Coach Mandy
many swimming experts say the egg beater kick is not for beginners bcz is too complicated, there're other simplier kicking methods that beginners can use and still comfortably stay afloat for a long time and even move around in the water too
You bring up a valid point. The egg beater kick can indeed be more intricate, and it's true that there are simpler kicking techniques suitable for beginners. It's crucial to assess each individual's background, comfort level, and specific goals when choosing a kicking method. I've taught beginners successfully using this approach, but I do recognize that there are various angles to consider. What's important is finding the technique that best suits the individual's needs and helps them feel confident in the water. It's a real case-by-case basis. I also have a video showcasing three different treading water techniques, which might be helpful in exploring various options. You can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/yZsetei57oQ/видео.htmlfeature=shared. Additionally, inside the SWIMVICE program, I've created a comprehensive treading water series that goes through the entire detailed progression. This provides a structured approach to mastering this important skill. You can find more information about the program at linktr.ee/swimvice. Thanks for highlighting this important aspect of swimming instruction! Best, Coach Mandy
i do vertical kick via both legs bent, both legs straight...I do bob up and down some also toes pointed and kick from the hip...breathe when you can more difficult to do after swimming laps, much more difficult...
I would not try this if you are already fatigued physically. That’s probably why it was hard to do. Pick a time when you are in a relaxed state and want to try it out. Enjoy! 🏊🏼♂️🙌🏽 -Coach Mandy

I'm so afraid of the deep water...I really want to learn to swim in 2020. I feel like I could do many other things if I conquer this fear. I get anxious just thinking about getting in the deep water.
It's hard for me to keep my head above the water I take swimming classes and everyone knows how to tread in water for at least 30 seconds and I have to hold the wall when were in the deep end (11 feet water)
Yes 🙌 you have to really relax your arms and legs and your breathing. Avoid moving too quickly as this burns up more energy while treading water. Also, keep your arms under the surface of the water. The higher you tread, the more energy you exert. I will have more on this soon! Enjoy your practice Maddie. 🙌✅🏊♀️ -Coach Mandy
im going to try this after being inspired by a great pool day with my grandkids who can now swim like fishes after a solid year of private lessons. I love the pool, but I use a pool noodle to support my kicking and arms. I have had lessons in the past, but I have never been really comfortable in the water. I grew up far out on the Mojave desert, there was never any water to swim in. Town was a long way away. When ever I got to a lake or something as a kid water was for playing in not really learning anything and it was pretty short lived anyway as we wouldn't stay long.
Here I am after failing my tread & float test several times at NACCS (naval aircrew candidate school) for the US navy it’s not a normal tread and float it’s with flight suit flight vest steel toe boots gloves and a helmet... I have the 2 minute tread down but as soon as I float I panic since my heart rate is so high I don’t think I’ve ever drank so much water so fast in my life and have to get pulled in by a rescue swimmer wish me luck I test again tomorrow and I’m hoping these tips help 😌
I hope you are doing well @bonez ! Do not worry, others have experience this same panic it just triggers your fight or flight response and your body locks up immediately. Give yourself more time and patience through this process and it is much more of a priority to get comfortable floating. This will help reduce the panic and gives you more time to feel the water truly supporting you! 🙌🏊♂️🙏 Best, Coach Mandy

Is there any hope for someone that can't float? When I do that buoyancy test my whole body is about 3 inches under water? Does that mean I just need to generate more power from moving my hands and feet? Is that practical?
If you are three inches a under the water you are still holding onto tension and you did not fill your lungs up fully with air. You have to relax your entire body and wait for your body to slowly rise up to the surface. There is no power generated from your hands and feet. If you attempt to power yourself to the surface you will resist the water and sink further. You can float. You are that close! Keep working through it and relax more each time. 🙌🏊♂️ Coach Mandy
My body composition is very densed which makes it very hard for me to tread. It doesn't help that I have a fear of deep water as well. I'm able to float when breathing calmly, but as soon as I start the eggbeater or sculling I sink. Any Suggestions?
Hello Jonathan, Great question - The fact that you are able to float when breathing calmly is what you want to build off of. I would advise to practice floating in a vertical or seated position by the wall and become comfortable even if your head is under the water. When you need a break, simply grab onto the wall. When you are sculling or treading at this time, your body is tensing up and most likely you are decreasing your surface area simultaneously. Practicing repeats of relaxation in a more seated or vertical position (with your arms and legs out to increase surface area) is the first step to being able to tread water. Since our bodies are composed of 60-70% water and with relaxed breathing your lungs are the other part of your buoyancy. This practice will help you tap into the relaxation component. This is what helps you sit higher on the surface of the water. For example, there are very lean and dense individuals who play water polo and tread for hours. They have learned over time how to establish their true buoyancy first so it is very possible to achieve. If you are looking for a step by step process through a series of floats and skills. I have a SWIMVICE Treading Water Program to help you establish this step and learn how to slowly build the coordination in once you have achieved full relaxation. Feel free to check it out here at: community.swimvice.com Enjoy your practice and keep me posted on your progress! Best, Coach Mandy 🏊🏻♂️

💯!
Thanks a lot for this tip ❤️

Excellent video! I can swim but I can’t tread water. My goal is to get PADI certified. I’ll be working on these techniques.
I think the biggest part is to keep air in your lungs which I've never done while treading water but instinctively done while floating on my back.
I’m currently taking lessons how to tread water and still face challenges to coordinate all steps even though I’m not afraid or panic at all while I’m under the water (I swim well) and that makes me frustrated a bit at myself (why?)
There’s a middle-age man in the pool I see that he can tread the water for more than one hour with sculling & flutter kick and still looks effortless. I couldn’t explain myself why it’s still very challenging to me 😵💫
I feel comfortable on my back. Thanks for the tip about buoyancy and my knees being close to my body.
I have it linked here:
ruclips.net/video/jfAo6gCy9SI/видео.html
Hope this helps shed more light on this subject.
SWIMVICE I cannot tread for long. Always sinking
@@SWIMVICE Do you not get tired waving your arm/legs so fast?
Not really because I don’t have much tension in my body. The only time it is tiring is having to move your legs and arms fast to lift your body out of the water as they do in water polo. But to just tread to stay in place you feel the water with slight resistance. The harder you work, the more resistance you create. I have another video going through the arm and foot motion for treading here: ruclips.net/video/jfAo6gCy9SI/видео.html
Best, Coach Mandy
Been trying it and had some progress, just need to control the fear of drowning so I can be more relaxed when in deep parts.
The breath control was great advice. I'm going to work on that. Thank you.

I like to scull and alternate between scissor kick and frog kick, drawing me knees up close to my body after each kick. Relaxed, and slow/low energy kicks keep me afloat all day
Does the force you apply on your feet and arms when threading matter?
I die when I’m away from the wall because I can’t tread for the LIFE OF ME

You’ve got this! 🙌
Yes, it does create a sort of propeller motion. many swimming experts say the egg beater kick is not for beginners bcz is too complicated, there're other simplier kicking methods that beginners can use and still comfortably stay afloat for a long time and even move around in the water too
You bring up a valid point.

I appreciate that your thinking about others safety
Feel free to check it out here at: community.swimvice.com

Hi Alice, sitting is the easiest position. Having your knees high towards the surface of the water and out wider as if you are sitting in a folded chair. Check out my RUclips Stories. 👍 -Coach M
@@SWIMVICE thank you ☺️ this is great
I'm very comfortable on my back in the water but I have a hard time treading coz I keep air in my lungs too much that I get tired easily. I was hoping to learn proper breathing while treading
Do I have to be in water deeper than my height in order to practise treading water? I have long legs and need space to practise but I'm afraid of entering water deeper than my height.
No, not at all. I highly advise to practice this skill in a shallow pool first. I have a recent video going through this skill and how to practice in a shallow pool. This way you are able to practice the movement before progressing to a deep environment. Your buoyancy is the same regardless. Here is the most recent video I have on treading water: ruclips.net/video/yZsetei57oQ/видео.html
Enjoy your practice Baxiz - Coach Mandy
