Absolutely awesome to see some self covering sword fighting. This makes duels last longer than 20 seconds... I just wish this would be done on tournaments...
ikr during tournaments they stare at each other for a minute straight then charge and it ends immediately
Great form and technique by these fighters. can't wait for more.
Holy cow, great techniques pulled off during this video. I'd suggest labelling all fighters each round, to help viewers, and actually naming mastercuts and other techniques when available.

+Julian Schuetze Somthing like red or blue belt would make it easyer to tell them apart and the name would not have to follow the fighter.

Don't worry about it mate, while of course we would like a little extra information, we do appreciate your hard work, the slo-mo replays and hit markers are a huge improvement over regular sparring videos.
+TheFilthyCasual Oh I'd absolutely love to stuff in more information and work on these more! Unfortunately I'm a full time Kinesiology student, plus all Blood and Iron activity so sometimes I'd be able to spend the time to add more details, but sometimes I would not. Consistency is one of the big things we're aiming for, so that's not possible at this time.
Fighter names aren't a big deal though so I can figure out a better way of doing it.

+René Jiménez To my eye it seems like she could have blocked that strike too but must have assumed that the opponent would go for an upwards slash and just put her sword in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A duel with longswords is such a delight to watch.
It is very good that you explain each fight separately. As a viewer who doesn't really know where to look, that's a great help for me.
Seeing Hema sparring in action makes me think unarmored civilian duels back then were relatively short affairs. It takes seconds at most for either combatant to draw first blood to end the duel
Decapitations and limbs getting torn off is probably like wednesday for them
If you look closely, most of the strikes that stop these bouts are kinda little more than love taps. They're maybe drawing blood, but a lot of them won't kill, or even severely injure. That last one that was ended by a draw-cut to the face would've just cut the piss out of your cheek and ear--it was nowhere near the neck, and nowhere near someplace vital. The same thing goes for most of the places where arms and legs are hit-- not much force delivered in the strike, therefor little more than cuts and nicks are delivered. A lot of people don't seem to realize that it's pretty damn hard to cut through bone, and all the test-cut footage people put out usually shows them cutting at 75-100% power. You can't always make followup attacks as powerful as you'd like.

if you have something like an epee (or a smallsword in a historical context) why would you attack from more than one direction?
@@frogman4700 Consider spanish Destreza. One could argue rapier is a better smallsword. Destreza is attacking from a ton of angles/directions.
@@runakovacs4759 a destreza is fundamentally different from a smallsword because its not exclusively for thrusting.

Even considering destreza, most rapier systems are linear. Smallsword is almost exclusively linear, so destreza doesn’t even apply.
I wish I had a HEMA club near me, I can settle for olympic style fencing in the meantime though (by which i mean foils and the like rather than longsword)

This looks like so much fun, sucks to have *the c00f* so it's not super safe to take lesson, especially for someone like me who doesn't have there own gear😭. But at least I get to watch some awesome longsword sparing!

Actually, this is not showy enough for film. Real fighting is hard to show in a crowd pleasing way
It can be made and very well .I believe that you do not have to sacrifice drama or any sort of things to make it realistic and faithful .
In the case of Game of Thrones , the lack of intelligence and skill of the characters is a complete downgrade from A Song of Ice and Fire , where they are far superior than their TV counterparts .
I disagree, Look at the Adorea Longsword duel! That was done using historical techniques and it looks amazing!
It's difficult to say the ASOIAF characters are superior to their live action counterparts because the novels simply don't go into sufficient detail of fights to make a blow-by-blow analysis of the fights. It's mostly informed ability. There are numerous unrealistic things in the books, too, regarding military subjects.

wicked Technics great fencing, i also saw lots of possibilties to use other guards to start and end a cut more cleanly
such as ox low and middle guards and even ending acceding cuts with einhorn

are there any manuals or depictions of kicks used as part of a HEMA combat system? I can see several openings where a Muai Thai style cut kick or leg kick could be executed swiftly and safely during some of these sparing moments and would give a great advantage in unarmored combat.
Yep. Can't remember the German ones but Fiore of the Italian school shows some kicks. Also both schools had plenty of grappling too.
Tophat Mike Probably, but even if there aren't any kicks depicted in manuals, you can be sure they were used anyways.
Wouldn't use them in friendly sparring though, kicking the legs out from under someone while both wield swords, even mock training swords, is a really bad idea
Mike Percival a greater one in armoured combat. Think about it armour needs to move around at the joints. If you have a guy in nice gambeson, and with some good chain mail overtop you won't get through that. The entire body is covered in tough chainmail. The best things to do are 1: half sword 2: wrestle. There are two types of wrestling. Sport, and to the death. If you are going o the death you can break joints, and smash bone. And you can do that as long as they aren't in some types of plays armour
During most of these rapid exchanges your cerebellum is so occupied that I doubt there would be room for kicks to come into action.
Golden Maximo . I disagree the glutus maximus will over power the cerebellum and produce a kick in reaction to the fight.
The victor of the 1:40 engage is so controlled during the whole thing. I actually screamed. Wow.
this scoring system makes sense for unarmored combat, which was of course done with longswords, but is there any way to spar simulating armored combat? it seems like armored longsword combat was one of the most difficult forms of swordfighting, but I can't think of a way to simulate that without stabbing each other in the eye or beating each other over the head
Well that's exactly the thing mate, the HEMA protection worn by practitioners today is nothing compared to the amount of protection that full-plate would give you. GIven that armored combat revolved around techniques that would hurt the enemy despite the armour, the HEMA gear would be nowere near enough to simulate armored combat. Murder strokes are right out - way too dangerous for a hema mask in my opinion, mask can cave in just from a normal longsword strike, a mordhau will deffinitely bent it and potentially break it if its a faulty one, Half-swording could be done but again youd be aiming for spots where there wouldnt be armor, and thrusts can be very dangerous against someone with just a HEMA jacket.
TL;DR : For the time being, no.
You can do most Harnischfechten techniques in regular HEMA gear; Ikotof is wrong about half-swording being too dangerous but right about Mordhau and Mordschlag being a no-no. That said, most Feders respons poorly to being used as crowbars to lever and throw your opponent around, which is how you use swords in armoured combat. You need a stiffer sword.
There is also one absolutely valid way to simulate a fight in armour... wear armour ;)

Ok, maybe I was wrong on the half-swording bit, but at the very least you need to be careful with thrusts in general, especially if the point goes towards the neck, even if your partner has a neck protector under the mask. Not that you shouldn't thrust, just that it should be done carefully :)
Yes, you do have to be careful. I find it better to use synthetic swords than steel in this context, both because they're safer in the thrust and because they're less likely to take a permanent set. And because they're cheap, so if you do ruin your sword you won't lose your best tournament feder :P

Not really, it was an afterblow. ( A strike you wouldn't have been able to throw if you were fighting with sharp weapons)

It was more a superficial cut than anything. Would leave a nice big scar but wouldn't be immediately lethal.

More or less. They're fighting based on techniques recorded in fencing manuals written in the past, such as Joachim Meyer's Art of Combat, a go-to longsword treatise for many HEMA fencers. Of course the swords are blunt and the equipment is modern, but the fighting is very much based on historical swordsmanship
Kinda of, because this techniques are on books and no everyone in middle ages know how to read.
Mario Guerrero Rodríguez a knight would’ve known how to read, and those books were meant for nobles and knights, and they often knew their own native language and Latin. Latin used to be the formal way to speak and write so anyone of higher class birth so everyone needed to know it.

Despite the use of armor, is there still a factor of pain in involved during these sparring sessions? And, if so, is it enough to deter otherwise aggressive or "natural" response to the opponent?

Yes, even with the jackets and protective gauntlets, you definitely still feel the strike. We put a high emphasis on respecting the weapon when we fight, so we don't just go in blindly throwing attacks.

Of course we use thrusts in sparring! Though on the whole we tend to be a much more cutty school.

Too difficult with spes heavies. I love to grapple with my left hand, and still find it hard to do it in full contact with these gloves. I hope we might see more when Konning gets more popular :)

Huh , didnt expect that it would be this similar to kenjutsu, i've seen a lot of moves that you do while practicing kenjutsu.
The mechanics behind swinging a sharp iron bar has alot of overlap. there's some difference in philosophy here and there but for the most part I've seen Kenjitsu or european longsword enthusiast able to pick up each others art form fairly quickly.
The only big difference is the techniques involving using the second edge and most of the thrusting techniques. Because while katana can thrust its primarily a slashing weapon.

Wrestling shoes would probably work real well on the mat you are using. Wouldn't offer much protection, but it's a shoe about as flexible as bare feet. Less chance of spreading ringworm and the like

Good match. Remember your footwork when you strike and parry. Your sword is your shield. Steeping in your strikes in a circular pattern to keep your sword in position and maintain threatening strikes. Every undefended strike should be a kill.

Does your scoring assume they would not be wearing armor? Most of those hits/slashes would have done little more than bruise a properly armored person.
