I'll admit it, after following you for a couple of years, always being in the silent crowd, I must say that you improvement on sword sparring is really inspiring. You've gone a long way, and it truly is satisfying to see your great progress. Keep up the good work Skall.
It's amazing how much your technique improved along the year, Skall. You still can't parry and riposte a car thought; so I hope no one tries to hit you with one again. These sparring sessions with slow-mo and comments are a joy to watch. Keep those coming!
The point digging in I think brings up an interesting issue - if you have a long sword (as in a sword with a long-ish blade) there is a real possibility of striking the ground if you aren't aware of where your point is. I've seen this happen quite a bit with broadsword students. On a nice floor it's slightly disconcerting, but on cobblestones or a grassy field there's a real chance of being disarmed or at least providing an opening for your opponent to exploit, so despite it being a freak accident, if you are training for "real world" combat outside the salle, the presence of the ground in relation to your weapon is worth bearing in mind. Note that in longer weapons like spear and quarterstaff, parrying is such a way as to bury your opponent's tip in the ground to secure an opening is considered a viable tactic.
This is so nice to watch. Unlike many other sword fighting videos out there, it seems that here you are evidently prioritizing not getting hit by the opponent rather than to score a hit. This makes it very nice to watch, longer fights (before a hit) and more thrilling to watch the fighters look for opportunities and react all the while trying to survive the encounter. Bravo! Much nicer than all those double hit videos out there, this looks legit. The experience with the weapons is evident as well.
Skall I've been watching your videos for a long time now and I shall say you really improved a lot in regards of sparring. Love your videos. Keep up the good work!
Tom New A highly trained girl that is and it's for the half of the video. For the other half he's fighting a man. And he's quite better than his sparring videos in the past. Important thing is improvement here.
wow. You grew so big in a small amount of time! impressive. I discovered you randomly when you had way less subscribers this summer. Great vids and I wish you have more subscribers as you diserve. Happy Chrystmas man. You are talented !
Chris seems like an absolute monster. I really hope to get into HEMA more over the new year. Shame my PLC course got in the way of training but I think my club should be able to keep using its second venue over 2017. I've only taken 3 classes so far and sparred once with longsword. My breathing was quite similar to yours here! Didn't help that the jacket I had to wear was drenched with a previous guy's sweat but whatever.
Wow looks so clean and graceful good spar but in a real duel would it end that quickly? Surely one cut to the arm or leg wouldn't incapacitate the opponent?
I have really been wanting to learn professional swordsmanship like this but the nearest school is over 100 miles away T-T. Is there any way I can still learn?
You've found Wikitenaur and have got a few books and a waster right? Pick an approach(so one historical style, one weapon, one schools interpretation etc) and understand the fundamentals, seek professional guidance as well when you can, travel or seek private tuition. Oh and youtube is great just be very careful. Go commence all the hard work. if youve already done all this then my apologies, just trying to offer friendly advice to someone who was in your place a few years ago.
Lianna's legs seem very exposed compared to yours. Wouldn't one want more protection when so many leg strikes are being thrown? Surely this can't be a case of revealing fantasy armor, is it? ;)
The front part is protected, and it's very unlikely any opponent would attack the feet anyway, they're always moving and it would expose you a lot, having the sword down and stuff. It's the old debate of agility vs defense, I think the tradeoff here is worth it
This is everything I love about swordfighting. It's such a beautiful and elegant art, especially when done as expertly as you two are. Thank you for showing us your artistry. :)
Sorry for this likely a begginers question, but i notice the fact that you guys dont usually spin or do something that give the back for the opponent, thats obivously a risk move but there is some situation where spinning would be a good call?
***** Also, i noticed that you usually dont use straight vertical and horizontal swings, is that a reason for it? Also, Merry Christmas and sorry for any english mistakes.
Man, I haven't watched your sparring videos lately, you've progressed like crazy. You and Lianna seem pretty evenly matched, that was really fun to watch.
I'll be honest, I enjoy these sorts of videos ( this and the previous synthetic saber one) far more than the weapon reviews and box openings. I understand that variety is the spice of life, these just happen to be a personal favourite.
The Aussie Boy That's kind of obvious, but what makes the hands more vulnerable? Is it that they can't have more protection because it restricts the hands too much?
Hand-hit is actually totally fine if you have appropriate hand protection. Like the SPES lobster heavy glove that Lianna is weaing, that is totally enough for full speed sparring. Same as the Sparring Glove that Skall is wearing in the video. But if you are using a Red Dragon glove or other weak protection gloves in longsword sparring. Then that will be very dangerious.
English Dogsoldier I think fingers will break regardless of the glove being metal. A specialized plastic and synthetic padding would probably be much better at absorbing blows. Metal gloves are still expensive tho! but padding up you hand with either glove will severely hinder the hand's agility and wouldn't be an accurate portrayal of an unarmed duel.
Seeing this sparring video made me realize just how much you've improved since the earlier ones where you were sparring in that gym. This is really interesting and the slow-motion makes it all the more better.
You need to climb the mountains of Canada. Each mountain has a piece of information on it. If you put all the pieces together you will know where to find our saviour........ the almighty Skallagrim. If Skall trusts you... he will reveal his secret unbeatable move to you. Good luck,Stranger.
Skall, i dont get it why you hate yourself about hitting hands. you say that you need to work on accuracy when it doesent really matter in tournamets, does it?
Depends on the tournament. Plenty out there don't score hand hits for the same reason (exception to "hand parries" where the defender moves their hands in the way of a blow that would otherwise have landed)
A ruleset is necessary to ensure practitioners don't break each other deliberately. HEMA tends to still use a bare minimum ruleset, so while it is a sport, it is still significantly less restrictive than fencing or kendo.
You have to understand that gloves/gauntlets are still the Achilles Heel of HEMA gear. The ones that offer plenty of protection limit the users dexterity a lot, so we have to find some kind of compromise. And hands / fingers are notoriously easy to break.
***** I know that hands cannot be protected, but remember what hema is. As kataki said it is so much less restricted than sport "sword-fighting", it is really strange how such simple thing is avoided. Its not like people will snipe hands and feet on purpose (although ive never been in a tourney but ive seen videos of people doing this mostly in poland). I think it is unfair to not score hand hits based on just safety. Its same as not thrusting in sca or without doing any research i think that you cant thrust legs in olympic fencing. What i meant here is that i agree discouraging people hitting hands on purpose, but i dont understand why is so much realism removed as in real life hands could have been hurt a lot even without trying to do so.
Damn Skall. Your skills surely are getting better. I still remember your sparring videos from 2 years ago. that was basically flailing sword like sticks compering to this. Keep up the good work.
I gotta say Skall, I'm really liking these videos. The commentary and the slow-mo really help me follow along. My only complaint is for some parts, I'd have liked another camera angle, but I understand that might not be feasible right now. I hope you continue making these sparring videos, keep up the great work.

i'm really glad for the slow-mo, because it looks alot like flailing, then they slow it down and you see all the technique and the actuall intent of the move
I really enjoy these sparring videos, it would be great to see a lot more attention made to them (extra angles or a second camera for close ups). Some really impressive weapons work from you and your fellow students.
This looks like a very fun, knowledgeable, and practical hobby. I mean this really looks like something I could get into. I am gonna research this more, and really liked the video!
Do more of these. It's awesome!
ill second that.
oh & add a first person camera as well :)
I third that.
I fourth that.
5th that!
Looks thrilling, I would love to give this a try.
me too
It looks like a lot of fun.
Yes it does
www.hemaalliance.com/ on this website you can find the closest HEMA school to you. you might find one relatively close to you.
Kerris L Ravenhill
I did mixed martial arts for a few years,
Unarmed sparring was so damn fun
Goddamn these need to be longer.
And uploaded daily. Scratch that, uploaded hourly.
The slow mo exchanges are just way to amazing to watch
Perhaps several continuous live streams so that we can observe him constantly from all angles?
+Azax glad I'm not the only one

Next lvl up put some points in Endurance!
Other than that, you've improve so much these last 2 years man, congratulations!
But never place a point on dex
What are you, casul?
renkov isn’t that important in regards to the longsword?
66 ENDURANCE
I misread the title as 'Skall vs Llama' and got confused.
Man i bet that would be a great video though.
He tried to end it rightly, and it didnt work.
_Metagalactic Llamas: Battle at the Edge of Time_
skalla vs a llamma
Conan punching a Llama? :)
Very nice commentary. Great work!
Wow. When the hell you did so much progress Skall? Impressive.
yep still cooler than the movie stuf
Skall should make a short film with legit sword fighting (unlike how they do it in hollywood)
The thought has crossed my mind occasionally.
do a remake of highlander, do it right and end it rightly

Love this stuff. It's so interesting to watch actual swordplay.

I don't see why this can't be recreated in a fight scene in movies. It looks more awesome than any other duels.

Thanks! And Happy Christmas to you as well.
***** thank you too very much! Especially for your answer and for your videos from which I have learned alot for I did not know anyting!
I really like your commentaries on these, it makes it easier to take notes and use as a reference for writing!
Looks like reach and endurance are quite useful in these bouts.

Skall I'm loving these sparring videos with the commentary. I could watch this all day. So cool!
I noticed Lianna isn't wearing shoes. Don't hurt your feet!
Do you think she gets any benefit from not using shoes?.
Mr. Ford seems like a good way to lose toes
Other than that, some people balance better bare foot. Feeling the ground under your feet and all that
The head instructor at Blood and Iron has been training barefoot for basically all his HEMA career, as far as I’m aware.
I love using barefeet it's way more responsive then shoes, rapid changes in direction is way easier.
watching your movements with you explaining really helps me to understand SWORD FIGHTING
Maybe at least one guy should be a in a different colour so it is easier to see the interactions.
But but all the cool kids wear black!
MobiusCoin LOL do you know how expensive the gear is?
^ I agree, and they don't spar for his videos. But perhaps skall could wear a some sort of identifier in the way of a colored accessory.
A simple arm band would do the trick
kidlikerizzle Or they can just wear crazy patterned socks
I really like these breakdowns of what happens! I often can't tell by just watching.

PJ McDaid lol, hilarious because he isn't even an adult yet :P amazing kid
yeah he has really aggressive style and seems to be very talented
So says The Great Cornholio!
Love watching the sparring videos with your commentary! More Please!
Wow looks so clean and graceful good spar but in a real duel would it end that quickly? Surely one cut to the arm or leg wouldn't incapacitate the opponent?
Maybe yes, maybe not...but it would usually decide who wins. Unless they would wear heavy armor, but im not sure how common would that be in duels.
you ever cut your finger with a knife? did it hurt? you think you can get your arm almost cut off and still fight as good as before?
Highly depends on the force and the angle of entry. A slice to an arm can be superficial or it can touch bone.
Simon G If I got a cut to the arm whilst dueling and it wasn't serious I think I would be fine and keep going.
Andoion Malvon Well, i dont think so. But i've never gotten a cut to my arm with a sword, sooooo, no idea
I absolutely love watching your sparring matches i learn so much
i like that he is posting more of this shit yesssss. I hope his arm has fully recovered though,
Love watching the sparring videos. Especially when you are using the steel longswords.
You should have thrown your pommel at your opponent.
I can see such a difference between this and your earlier videos! Keep getting better man!
pls more of chris, he is good :)
I really am enjoying the fact that you're uploading more of these sparring videos.
This actually looks pretty difficult, between the foot work and parrying and counters it looks very hard to master.
Great video. I enjoyed hearing the documentary while watching the spar. VERY educational!
I just realized how effective warfare could be if everyone threw away their guns and just started throwing pommels instead
you don't have a good username either so shut up I just realised that you are a moron.
you don't have a good username either so shut up nuclear pommels?
Really enjoyed this skall! Your sparring becomes increasingly entertaining as you progress
I have really been wanting to learn professional swordsmanship like this but the nearest school is over 100 miles away T-T. Is there any way I can still learn?

Love these sparring matches! The replays are extremely helpful. More videos like this plz!
Lianna's legs seem very exposed compared to yours. Wouldn't one want more protection when so many leg strikes are being thrown?
Surely this can't be a case of revealing fantasy armor, is it? ;)
TechSeven maybr more mobility??
It feels like it's much more easier to move barefoot and don't have to worry about as much limited(?) movement compared to moving around with boots.
The front part is protected, and it's very unlikely any opponent would attack the feet anyway, they're always moving and it would expose you a lot, having the sword down and stuff.

This is everything I love about swordfighting. It's such a beautiful and elegant art, especially when done as expertly as you two are. Thank you for showing us your artistry. :)
Skal you should put more points in stamina, as a pure warrior build it's your primary stat. Even before strengh and dexterity.
One of my favorite videos yet. I appreciate the detailed explanations for us. Keep it up out there! Looks like you're doing great
Sorry for this likely a begginers question, but i notice the fact that you guys dont usually spin or do something that give the back for the opponent, thats obivously a risk move but there is some situation where spinning would be a good call?
In my opinion, no. Unless you're dealing with multiple opponents perhaps.
***** Also, i noticed that you usually dont use straight vertical and horizontal swings, is that a reason for it? Also, Merry Christmas and sorry for any english mistakes.
Markus Brendon Lima
There were in fact horizontal cuts in the video. Vertical cuts are too easy to defend or evade in most situations.
Man, I haven't watched your sparring videos lately, you've progressed like crazy. You and Lianna seem pretty evenly matched, that was really fun to watch.
awesome more sparring matches pls with saber if You can
I'll be honest, I enjoy these sorts of videos ( this and the previous synthetic saber one) far more than the weapon reviews and box openings. I understand that variety is the spice of life, these just happen to be a personal favourite.
Why are hand-hits too dangerous even with protection? Or is it simply too easy to hit?
BBJ Music because there is a limit to the kinetic force they cant stop.
The Aussie Boy That's kind of obvious, but what makes the hands more vulnerable? Is it that they can't have more protection because it restricts the hands too much?
Yes.

Longsword sparring with commentary is super fun to watch! Do more, please and thank you!
love these short videos of sparring they are superb.
Sparring with commentary is REALLY a step forward. really enjoyable to watch :)
This is much more entertaining than the Sabre sparring. Looks much less chaotic and I really like your commentary.
This is SO MUCH FUN to watch. I'm fired up by the sound of clanging steel, what can I say?
Loving these sparring breakdowns Skall, keep em coming!
Damn Skall. Your skills surely are getting better. I still remember your sparring videos from 2 years ago. that was basically flailing sword like sticks compering to this. Keep up the good work.
Yeah, those old sparring videos were terrible. :)
I gotta say Skall, I'm really liking these videos. The commentary and the slow-mo really help me follow along. My only complaint is for some parts, I'd have liked another camera angle, but I understand that might not be feasible right now. I hope you continue making these sparring videos, keep up the great work.

These steel sword duels were excellent. I might have to travel down Island and check out this place!
Come by for a free intro lesson!
I love the slow motion blade clashing sound, it's so cool to listen to.
I can definitely tell you've progressed a lot over the years, love these sparring videos
This looks like something that you would find in a movie. I love that you can pull it off. Love this channel and this video. Hope to see more soon.
Glad to see you've made a recovery and you're sparring again. I'd love to see more videos like this.
You've come a long way Skal! Deffo see the improvements!
sparing is great exercise in any sport, keep it up. I look forward to seeing your progress 6 months from now.
Man you have gotten so much better congrats! No surprise since you're at an excellent school. I met Lee and Sean at Longpoint South. Awesome guys and amazing fencers.
Awesome! This is my favourite kind of sparring. Great video Skall, hope you have a great holiday.
i'm really glad for the slow-mo, because it looks alot like flailing, then they slow it down and you see all the technique and the actuall intent of the move
these videos are really good, they're really educational for seeing some tricks
Hey Skall, I gotta say it's videos like this that inspired me to look up historical fencing in my area and to go for it! thanks for the inspiration!
Seeing the sparring with the steel practice swords is even cooler!
Loved seeing the metal swords out. You're definitely getting better skall
I have been following your channel for years and your movements seem night and day from those old sparring videos in that old gym
These videos and your commentary are great for my research on realistic sword fighting. Keep up the educational and super entertaining content!
I really enjoy these sparring videos, it would be great to see a lot more attention made to them (extra angles or a second camera for close ups). Some really impressive weapons work from you and your fellow students.
that was great!! I last remembered your arm was injured. Glad to see ur back in training!
Looking forward to see more training videos!!
This looks like a very fun, knowledgeable, and practical hobby. I mean this really looks like something I could get into. I am gonna research this more, and really liked the video!
I found this super relaxing for dealing with insomnia, don't know why
thanks for the great vid!
1:24 is great. This is functional mind and body exercise. Looking for different types of workouts and this is really cool!
Thanks Skallagrim! You look to be improving immensely. That guy you fought in the yellow was quite beastly!
Really enjoy these commentated sparring videos.
Awesome sparring and commentator. Do more of this Skal.
Damn you have improved so much. Really it's so cool to watch you spar!
out off all videos you make i enjoy sparring vids most becuase they get me excited to test this kinda stuff
I found this extremely interesting. I don't know how I ended up here, but I like the commentary explaining what's actually going up. Thumbs up!
the sound of the blades makes this more awesome
It's refreshing to see a more aggressive stance! And to see you trying to adapt to it. Really interesting.
Man actual sword fighting is beautiful to watch.
Nice to see you actually putting all that training to use.
