    Very cool video and illustrates how people often don't understand the mechanics of what they're trying to do. I do have a quick question - I've always been told not to parry edge to edge, but flat against the edge. Is that really not the issue that it's supposed to have been in the past?

    Another thing with the tippy taps is they're not super likely to end a fight or result in a kill without follow through. And against armor of any kind they would do literally nothing. Even with follow through.

    at 1:40 Pretty much summing up the issue I have with almost every Chinese sword fighting demonstration I've seen in person and online and many Japanese sword fighting. This idea you can outmaneuver a blade...what's worse is in demonstration they usually don't attempt to duck out of the way but rather step to close in distance...without also trying to parry. 2:45 as well.

      Definitely a technique. Meyer does say to be careful while using them though.

    • @user-js8jh6qq4l
      @user-js8jh6qq4l 7 лет назад +1

      As long as you can safely get away with it if your opponent was wary of it, it's a technique. But if you turn feint into a massive twirl, it gets really dangerous.

    Who's the editor?
    Also what type of combat approach do you recommend? I'm joining a HEMA club soon and I want to develop an explosive assault style like Lee Smith but at the same time a quick executioner when defending but I'm not sure if it's the best approach.

    • @HEMASimian
      @HEMASimian 7 лет назад +1

      That would be me.
      What does your HEMA club do? I'd recommend avoiding general concepts and find what works best for you via practice. A particular style you might fancy might not be the one you are best at applying.

      Academy of Historical Fencing teaches Leichtenauer longsword but accepts other styles like Fiore's (which I'm far more familiar with, understand better, and practice frequently) and from video research I found AHF do mixed style fencing, same style fencing and team activities to keep people on their toes.

    In soft-combat you'll see a lot of Tricks since the head is not a valid target (to my desmay since I follow Meyer's Dussack), points are given when the weapon just touches you and weapons don't follow any real reference. Tricks are often used by the inexperienced fighters trying to gain advantage and rulings are tight. Besides there's no grappling.

    So is rolling a trick or a technique?
    It has an option since I may have rolled off a cliff doing so.
    Either way 1:54 should have rolled. With that gear you're almost guaranteed a fastroll.

      At a tournament I once saw someone who was down a whole ton of points with a few seconds left decide: "f*** it, I've already lost, I'll end it with a rolling attack to be funny." As he went to tuck his chin for the roll his neck protector jammed, causing his head to hit the floor and give him a concussion, pulling him out of the rest of the tournaments. So I guess that's also an option?

    • @korstmahler
      @korstmahler 7 лет назад

      That surely makes it a technique, we have options of 'cliff', 'mis-aimed follow-up', 'being struck/stabbed in motion', ''hitboxes taking the piss' and 'concuss self'.
      I've seen people in Parkour break collarbones doing similar in plain athletic clothing. Now I think on it rolling properly in armour must require a lot of trust in your fitting.

    Though according to HEMA(and most practitioners), spinning is ludicrous... is it seen as a technique in any setting, or is it just a flashy trick? Just want to put the question out there since you guys didn't mention flashy spins :P

    • @user-js8jh6qq4l
      @user-js8jh6qq4l 7 лет назад

      Spinning is a trick rather than technique. The benefits that spinning gives you don't give you that much with swords. They require a pretty moderate minmum of strength, so you don't have to go full spinning. Proper structure is enough.
