We recently played through Halo 3 again for a future project, and we were reminded how wonderful Chief and Cortana are when they are together. We searched through all the main titles and tried to find their best moments together, whether they were funny, emotional or dare I say romantic. We let some of the scenes run pretty long, just to give context to the story. We might just make a shorter version that literally just shows the quick moments, but as of right now we like the video better this way. I've personally always considered them a couple, but that's just me. I know a lot of people see that as ridiculous, but if you ever watched the making of Halo 3, even Bungie refers to Cortana as Chief's girlfriend. Some of the moments we chose also show Chief relentless trust of Cortana, even if she's not in the scene. We hope you enjoy, and if you have any favorite moments that we didn't include, lets us know in the comments below!

You give everything for them, never back down when things get tough and hold them through the roughest of times. But sometimes love means letting go of them as well

Fuck, I cried. Most movies/books/etc have a kiss scene, sex scene, whatever. All Cortana ever wanted was to know what it feels like to touch him at all.

Cortana in Halo 4 was my favourite version of Cortana. She seems so human, so much more emotional, and if we put ourselves in her shoes, we can understand the frustration amd helplessness she feels. For example, her impending "death" from rampancy. It makes e just want to hug her and tell her its going to be alright :(

She let him go, granted was forced by Exubie, but hey ho. Butter fingers' are butter fingers.
Yeah but all of halo 4 he tried to honor that promise so hard. He told that commander on the infinity to fuck himself and did everything he could for her.
John Skauge And in a way, he succeeded. Cortana went out on her own terms. She knew she would die anyway, so she took a chance, and saved Chief instead (look, you two partners who tryst each other are working together, it's literally a sworn rule that you take care of each other and die for each other if the opportunity presents itself). Her rampancy would have taken her anyway. I think Cortana at the time never thought Chief failed her at all (its him who's likely thinking he did). It was his job to take care of her...and he DID...he did a damn fine job too.
Unfortunately, the original Cortana is dead. As far as I know, his mission of taking care of her is completed. Now his new mission is "take care" of this new Cortana (or eliminate her....the original Cortana would never want to endanger Chief, or his friends, or anyone else).
Toby Triggerson it is the real Cortana and she isn't hardware she is alive she was made from Halsey's brain matter in halo 5 during her revival she was corrupted by the mantle just like the precursors were before the forerunners

and we can see how Master Chief cares more about humanity in halo five, when the chief meets with cortana.
also we see more of her human side in halo the fall of reach when cortana realizes of what halsey did with the Spartans two, and how they were kidnapped.

@@shyowl3453 so cortana was fractured rogue versions all over place multiple personalities they all cared for Chief but was twisted by rampency and all the other things cortana had been put through. its been confirmed the Cortana you see in Halo 5 isnt the cortana we know its a rogue version that got split off at the end of halo 4. she still has the feelings for master chief but lost everything else that made cortana cortana. master chief at end of 5 is realising this now 6 will be interesting if he decides the only way is to end her to put her out of misery or to maybe find a way to restore the cortana that may be left somewhere inside this rogue cortana's AI

Halo 4 was the first game of the series I ever played, and seeing that final cutscene with Cortana actually made me cry, I thought she was gone for good, and in just one game I’d grown so attached to her that I couldn’t handle her leaving, just the relationship between her and chief was amazing

Wow. The shift from professional soldier to shock was really well done. From that point on, this is the most human Chief has ever acted. This is John speaking and not Master Chief, Spartan 117. This scene just shows how much he has bonded with Cortana and how strong their love is for each other. Hearing his voice break while trying to figure out a way to save her nearly brought me to tears. This scene is a culmination of everything that came before it: their meeting, their relationship building slowly while going through hell and back, their quips and banter that all lead up to this heart breaking moment where you truly see John vulnerable.
Well done 343, now please give them a happy ending in Halo 6.
This brilliant scene showed they can do it.

When I first saw this scene, I couldn't help but think that it symbolized Chief's world falling apart. Like he just lost the other, most important half of himself. Because regardless of what others say, these two *ARE* an item. And without Cortana, Chief doesn't know how to move on, or even how to *live*, really. She was the only individual to treat him with love, and that grew over their time together.

I don't know what it is about this romance. So very moving. Literally star-crossed lovers...neither never meant for love, but finding it with each other...a love that was never meant to be by any "normal" standards, but it is real and it is theirs. Sacred and beautiful.
It has a weird innocence to it...that draws me in more than anything else. The perfect soldier, the peak of AIs...they shouldn't have this kind of affection. It's not part of the plan.
And yet...there it is.
It's new to them. They don't seem to sure how to handle it. Especially the Chief seems a bit...off about it.
And yet...there it is.
I don't know what it is either, maybe this familiar innocent "first love" feeling in the utterly hopeless Halo universe...this spark of something pure in their grim reality...but I can't escape wanting to see how this ends.

I think it's about true love. We've gotten so messed up as a society that we can only relate the word love between 2 non-related people with romantic love. A love that is born of friendship is as deep and meaningful and I think Chief+Cortana perfectly encapsulates that. Makes her killing off-screen that much worse.

Halo 3's art style, in particular, is simply timeless. Halo 4 and Halo 5 look soulless and generic by comparison.

I mean yeah, we were seeing halo one and two anniversary. It’s insane. I like Halo 3’s art style more, but halo four and five had to adapt to a new generation who only want good graphics, not a good story line.

yes, a love story. but more specifically, a platonic love story, in my opinion. people can greatly love each other without it being romantic. they are two products of science who’ve been through hell and back together and genuinely enjoy the other’s company. the duo of a lifetime.
If you think this wasn't romantic, you're completely deluded.
If you don’t get the romantic chemistry they shared, you are really missing the plot. They were only plutonic physically, due to the limits of their construction (and reconstruction). They shared an intimacy that even fully human lovers cannot. She literally lived inside his head. I don’t care how much you think you know another human, how much you love them, how inseparable you are, how committed: No pair of human lovers can truly see behind the eyes of their partner as completely as they did. This is the ultimate star-crossed lovers story. There was nothing plutonic about it. Master Chief and The Weapon? That’s another story.

When you spend so much time with another person it's almost inevitable
Those electrical curves of hers definitely makes the questing better. My favorite is Cortana from Halo 4. The game developers definitely went after the definition on her body LOL
It's still a beautiful story. Wish they'll find a human body for Cortana's conscience and bring them together and finish their story and start a fresh story with new characters.
I do believe Cortana did have small romantic feelings for chief. Halo 4 and all the conent released after a halo 3 kinda confirmed it. But halo 4 is a better example, during her rampancy. Her feelings for chief would shift, she showed the small romantic interest in him to down right hating him. In the halo legends movie in one of the arks, cortana would try to talk to chief despite him being a cyro sleep and at one point try to touch him with her avatar, but he was in the pod. This feeling shift thing is the same with hasley. Cortana saw her 'mother' as a great woman and had loyalty to her, but in halo 4. We saw how she really saw halsey... a monster for doing those things to kids.
If you read the book: The Fall of Reach she actually criticized Halsey for kidnapping those kids and wanted to protect 117 from a fate like that ever happening again.
Small romantic feelings?
Cortana was straight up in love with John. It's evident to me in three particular moments, first when she's acknowledges her impending doom and the fact that John may well be paired with another Cortana model and it won't be her, second when she stops the Didact saying she's not doing it for Humanity (hinting that the only one she really cared about was John) and third when at the end of Halo 5 she screams in anguish after John is "taken" from her.

The choir music was one reason why I bought Halo 1 lol :D It was so awesome and epic like the game was. I first heard it in a trailer of Halo 1 (after a while when the first xbox came out). At the same time a voice said "You are mankinds final hope".

I played one halo game and ended up watching 48 mins of heartache.
That "goodbye John" in Halo 5 was so good. You could actually see the moment she turned, as if she just shut off her love

Never played any halo but this chemistry is just perfection. Cortana who was clinging to life so badly still gave it up for him. And that one line "I am not leaving you here" from Chief rings so full of emotion its just incredible. That actor did a wonderful job. You hear all the pain in his voice which is normally a brave soldiers voice but in this line he just sounds so vulnerable...
Cortana is the closest thing he ever had as a relationship of any kind since birth. He was kidnapped at 6 and bred to be a soldier with no one to confide but an AI.

I love how in Halo 4 and in the books Chief and Cortana have this "man vs machine" battle. Cortana wants to be able to "feel" being alive even though she's technically a machine while Chief is a human trained to act like a machine. Because of this Chief often struggles to understand what it truly means to have emotions (because Cortana is emotional and intelligent) so she tries to help Chief rediscover *who* he is rather *what* he is. A shame this was never expanded upon in Halo 5 and decided to rush everything including the "hunt" and Cortana's return.

Then, in July of 2557, Master Chief wakes up from cryo sleep and Cortana sacrifices herself on the Mantle’s Approach days later.

Halo is about a human superweapon and an A.I. They're ordered around and forced to fight in this war that spreads across the galaxy. They're the two strongest threats. But they just do what they're told. Their hearts aren't in the war. Only their efforts are. Deep down, the only thing that matters to them is the love they have for each other.
Master Chief is a soldier. He survives by doing what he's told, and his actions end up saving humanity. We do the same. We do as we're told and our actions keep society together. Eventually Chief abandons his post, just as we must do one day. In a way, we are all the Master Chief.

Watching Cortana walk away from Chief at the end of Halo 4 was like watching your high school sweetheart who started out as your best friend walk away from you after several years of love together. Then Halo 5 was the story about letting go after all the pain.
Dont get me wrong, Cortana in every Halo looks good, but I gotta say the Halo 2 rendition of Cortana looks the hottest and most youthful.. i guess would be the word. Her voice in Halo 2 was better imo too.
I personally think she looks the best in Halo 4, with Halo 2 Cortana as a close second
Another person with the same feeling, Halo 2 and 4 versions of cortana are superior, i know the 4 version is another design but come on, i can't stand the version of 3... until i saw this version... Literally killed the most beautiful AI i ever seen, and her previous voice actress is a real beauty.
The new version of halo 2 cortana is also very beautiful, but i'm stick at the GENUINE Xbox cortana version for Halo 2.

I love Halo. The games, the novels. the Accessories made from them (stickers, figures ect). I've always loved the relationship between Cortana and The Chief. The way it started tentatively and evolved over time into a deep reliance and dependence on each other. Being a Spartan, John didn't have a deep relationship with any human like he did with Cortana. They genuinely cared for each other in a way that no humans ever could have. This is a beautiful tribute. Thank you.
I love how in combat evolved it didnt start out very emotionally, but over the years due to the fun times we grew very emotional ABOUT the story and our times playing halo and bungie epitomized on it perfectly and played on our nostalgia in halo 3 by bringing in whirlpools of emotion
And then along came a little Halo 5.

Never in the games does master chief open doors. They either open automatically or if they're stuck cortana has to "access the covenant battle net" to hack it open. And the covenant are religious about lighting the rings therefore they're Christians...
I'm a Christian and no where in the bible does it say to light rings. You must mean Hebrews, Muslims, HIndus etc

In Halo 4 Dr Halsey says “I supplied the Spartans with the tools they needed” and it shows her handing Cortana over to chief, she wasn’t just an AI to help aid him in battle I think she was made to help keep him stable and make him feel like he has purpose, he obviously develops feelings for her and that motivates him to push himself and not feel as alone. That man interviewing Halsey says “do you think the chief succeeded because he was broken at his core?” And that’s probably true but he needed something else to keep him going and to not feel alone and that was Cortana’s true purpose in my opinion, to keep him company and help him not just strategically but to have that emotional bond develop
Halo 4 showed us the true relationship between these two, and so when cortana 'died' master chief was almost too upset to go on, and after halo 5, he realizes that he must fight the very thing that kept him going while he fought, the one who kept him company, cortana and chief became friends, then fell in love and now, they're fired to be mortal enemies.....I might cry
Halo infinite needs to change that. I'll be SO mad if it doesn't.
