To be fair, trusting Guilty Spark proved very advantageous for humanity. Had Chief refused Spark's request to help, they may have failed to stop Truth.
if you think about it, Fernando is really the closest thing chief has ever had to a normal friend. i mean sure hes had friends like cortana, the arbiter, lasky, etc. but none of them were everyday civilians. Fernando is quite literally the most normal friend chief has had in his life.
At the end, Chief says "Good work soldier" to Esparza. Knowing full well he was just a civilian contractor, chief still showed him the respect due to a brother in arms. And when he almost hugged him, I bet you chief shed a tear or two.

“I failed her, I will NOT fail you” I actually teared up the first time I heard Chief say that. He sounded so determined and so compassionate. Especially when they have nothing or very little options and resources Chief just restores faith and confidence by not sulking about anything and making due with the hands dealt before him. All by only saying “it’s all we need” or anything related to that.
Thing about this is how easily without hesitation John admitted this humanity see's him as there superhero the trailer for Guardians shows this with the boy having a Spartan IV figure he painted green to look like him. So John saying this to the closest person he gets to an everyday civillian is incredible.

After the mess that was Halo 5's campaign, after the untapped potential of Halo 4's, Halo Infinite finally gives us a great story that we can get attached to.
Halo 4 had great potential with the way it was going. Halo 5 threw it all out the window with cortana and the created. Also them trying to replace chief with locke.
@@budroe95 Well in that regard with them "replacing" chief it was more of the marketing/propaganda within the lore that made the fanbase a bit bitter with Halo 5 as they also made Chief out to be this all-around bad guy while Locke was the good guy making people think that they were probably going to end up killing their childhood icon or play as him but as the villain this time around.

Honestly, one of the best things revealed was the banished motivation for plundering the infinity. It wasn't senseless violence, it was as noble as vengence for a homeworld lost. If the Banished glassed earth in that time, cheif would have a Doom Slayer like conviction to destroy. Much like Atriox.
Vengeance is not a good motivation for the Banished. In the books, their leader Atriox, specifically states how petty vengeance is as an emotion. The reason the Banished is a multi-species alliance (including Elites and humans in their forces) is because Atriox doesn't believe in vengeance against an entire species, it offers no reward for the pragmatic mercenaries that they're supposed to be. Atriox would know that not all of humanity is at fault. He would know that it was just the UNSC specifically that was irresponsible with Cortana. That's not something that should be retconned out of the canon.
@@Luxembourgish It wasn't just for vengeance however. It was because an enemy with the power to blow up planets was not a threat he could allow to persist, and there were secrets oh Zeta Halo he wanted to claim for himself. The vengeance part was a bonus.
A lot of people were giving Echo 216 crap in this game, but seriously he survived for 6 months on the pelican trapped in space. How many people would that not mentally shatter. 6 months of at any moment he could be found and killed and essentially trapped with no way to escape and get home. Also 343 you gave us Echo 216 now don't do some stupid off screen death of him just to get him out of the story. We need to get him back to his family.
Also, add to that he isn't Military, so he doesn't have the same mental fortitude of the sailors/soldiers around him. So knowing that, the entire leadup to the reveal is an appropriate response.
I always just took his attitude in the beginning as a simple "the Banished are too powerful, I've been on my own for 6 months trying to survive and I want to go home". Regardless of whether or not he was a soldier I understood it that way and honestly didn't blame him. So the reveal that he wasn't even a soldier, just a civilian engineer in the wrong place at the wrong time made me appreciate him even more.
Also neat detail some people overlook but during the begining cutscene when the pilot gave his pistol with the chief "You have one bullet against an entire army" Being trapped in a metal tomb in the cold dead exposure to space with the scraps of the infinity , never seeing your family again with a gun with one round A round he was saving for himself
I just love how at 16:40 when Fernando is hugging Chief, his arms raise up like he's about to give a hug. You can see him physically resisting. I absolutely love it!
@@billjones642 Maybe the Chief of the past wouldn't, especially in his youth, but now? With all that he's seen and been through (and will continue to see and experience until he finally bites the dust, however much that hurts me to even think about), I'd say Chief will start to act less machine-like and more human to some degree, even if, of course, he'll still maintain his signature stoic, reserved, taciturn, and utterly unflinching/unwavering disposition no matter what. Especially with Cortana musing on who's really the machine between the two of them more than once, something of which still probably replays within the Chief's head. Besides, he does stand there awkwardly after he lowered his arms to his sides (no doubt feeling uncomfortable from being hugged), which is still funny as hell.
The “I failed cortana. I will NOT fail you” hits deep. The fact that a character with as much power and presence as the chief is starting to show his “human” side is good. The thud you hear as he drops to one knee alongside the pilot really emphasizes his presence

0:39 incredible play of light, first, while the spartan suffers the light is red and bright indicating that there is something urgent to do, which is to free him. When he is released and the Spartan stops suffering, the light is neutral reflecting that theres no more urgency and the Master Chief is paying attention to what he has to say, the light on the Spartan's face makes it your center of attention, while the Master Chief remains in the shadow so that he does not distract you, when the spartan stops talking and dies the light turns to a cold blue indicating that Chief is assimilating the death of the spartan, this is reinforced accompanied by music and that he does not speak. And finally, the same red light that previously indicated urgency now serves to illuminate the background, it is important that the background is illuminated and not Chief because that way his anger and determination is better reflected.
When cortana says “we just keep saying goodbye don’t we” you can almost feel the sorrow in Master chief. His heart breaking at those words. At the end of it he was kind of stunned, in shock just like when cortana seemingly died at the end of halo 4.

Pretty cool, but you don't have to call them "clouds" or "star". Those are actual clouds and that's an actual star. This is a ring, not a shield world. It isn't a projection.
5:34 This is one of the best motivational quotes I have heard from Master Chief. He may be one of the deadliest spartans but in the end he is still human and humans will make mistakes and learn from them. Halo Infinite really tells it well while progressing the game through nods from older games and it builds better character development for Master Chief.
I think the moral of Halo infinite is about redemption. Chief’s journey to redeem himself after losing Cortana and being beaten by Atriox. Fernando’s journey to face up to what he did and do what’s best despite his fear. Escharum’s goal to finally die in a respectable way, to a valued enemy. Cortana, with her final act. Once and for all, realizing her mistakes and choosing to save Chief one last time. And finally, perhaps most importantly, 343’s redemption. They tried Halo with different formulas, made mistakes, made strides, but returned to what made them all fall in love with the franchise in the first place. A story of a green man, and blue lady, who fight impossible odds to give us all hope that things can be better.
Moments with the spartans made me feel sad but that ending with Fernando made me cry a bit. Such a good moment, especially with how he blurted out who he was earlier on.
Given how much respect and care Chief shows for his fellow soldiers and the Spartan IVs, I can only imagine how sad it would be if we have to go through Chief losing Blue Team. Like sure the others are Spartans too, but they are more akin to cousins or step-brothers/sisters. Blue Team is the closest thing he has to blood relatives at this point.

Thought he was nothing but a coward too, but then I learned, 1. He's just a CIVILIAN contractor. Just a volunteer, who wanted to help, but everything went to hell. 2. He hints at his family beind dead. That holographic recording most likely being the only thing left he has to remember them by. 3. He spent 6 months alone in that Pelican! No shower and living off of MRE's. Think of how low his morale must have been. And the emotional breakdown he has with those Condors really helps the player in understanding that.

I'm honestly surprised that "enjoying Master Chief's human side" is a seemingly popular opinion. Halo's fans usually gave me the impression that they would cry out of frustration if Master Chief even showed the slightest bit of emotion. Speaking of, does Master Chief respect the Hunters, the Unggoy, the Brutes, the Sanghelei, the Jackals, and the Skirmishers as soldiers, the same way he does with Escharum? This is the first FPS game I remember playing that sheds light on "respect for the enemy" in war.
Look at it like this, in this game it seems more natural, while he has his more human moments, he isnt just spilling his heart out, you can tell that he's still rather closed off, even during his more emotional moments, not like how he acted during the soap opera like performances he gave in halo 4 and 5. so i wouldn't say people hate chiefs human side, they just didn't like how it was portrayed in halo 4 and 5 i certainly didn't.
@@r3ktl3ss20 Even in H4, he was very closed off at times. There were multiple instances where they showed his inability to act like a normal human. In H4, he was helplessly watching his closest friend dying a slow painful death. In Infinite, he was dealing with trust issues after Cortana's betrayal.

I think the part in the beginning where Chief hesitated to take the dead Marine's rifle should be, at least, an honorable mention of Chief's humanity and compassion.
Halo TV Series: "We need Chief to take his armor off so he can connect with the other characters and audience to show his budding humanity despite everything he's going through." Halo the games: "...The armor stays on."
I just loved the character of the pilot. What a way to refresh things up. Masterchief is somehow a middle point between human and AI if you think about it. A soldier. Just works so well, perfectly balanced.
4:37 - "I'm not YOU." Every single dead Marine, Technician, Crewman and Officer that man saw die. Every broken corpse, littered piece of armour, ravaged vehicle and beaten hulks from vessels this man witnessed. If he'd just been like John. A Spartan II. As smart, as fast, as strong and as skilled. Maybe, just maybe... things might have been different. Very simple, yet very well executed character development
This is the best chief has been, he acknowledges he is a machine of the UNSC, but after cortana's death he also shows some of his human side, a somewhat sad but perfect balance of how chief should be imo
7:11 they delivered that scene so damn well. I haven’t played the campaign (idc about spoilers tbh) but maaaan, it does look good. 343 redeemed themselves IMHO.

HEY ITS OZ
Vengeance is not a good motivation for the Banished. In the books, their leader Atriox, specifically states how petty vengeance is as an emotion. The reason the Banished is a multi-species alliance (including Elites and humans in their forces) is because Atriox doesn't believe in vengeance against an entire species, it offers no reward for the pragmatic mercenaries that they're supposed to be.
Atriox would know that not all of humanity is at fault. He would know that it was just the UNSC specifically that was irresponsible with Cortana. That's not something that should be retconned out of the canon.
@@Luxembourgish I mean, he did almost completely destroy the UNSC specifically
@@topsnek1375 Destroying the UNSC is fine, destroying the entire human species however makes no sense for his character.
I think his family is dead, when Weapon is asking him and Chief if they have anyone back home, he says something like "no, not anymore."
Also neat detail some people overlook but during the begining cutscene when the pilot gave his pistol with the chief
"You have one bullet against an entire army"
Being trapped in a metal tomb in the cold dead exposure to space with the scraps of the infinity , never seeing your family again with a gun with one round
A round he was saving for himself
And all he had was a pistol with one bullet… right before he gave it to the chief.
I just love how at 16:40 when Fernando is hugging Chief, his arms raise up like he's about to give a hug. You can see him physically resisting. I absolutely love it!
eh. it would've been better/funnier if he didn't and just stood there awkwardly. chief don't give hugs.

This is one of the best motivational quotes I have heard from Master Chief. He may be one of the deadliest spartans but in the end he is still human and humans will make mistakes and learn from them.
Halo Infinite really tells it well while progressing the game through nods from older games and it builds better character development for Master Chief.
*the deadliest spartan, he has a kill count in the millions

3. He spent 6 months alone in that Pelican! No shower and living off of MRE's. Think of how low his morale must have been.

It's glossed over really well so no one thinks about it but a pistol with one bullet is considered symbolic since it's how many would commit suicide. So not only did he stand by this whole time but he held out hope that someone would come for 6 months with only one bullet by himself with only a recording of his dead family after the greatest ship in his force got destroyed and his entire species greatest hero got demolished. That's REALLY brave, like Johnson would even respect that I feel.
Seeing chief take a moment to grieve the fallen Spartans is just so moving I can’t explain it.
The shear emotion Chief conveys with nothing but body language, he's at once more relatable and expressive than most other characters in any other game I've played and without even a glimpse of his face, and he's still a man of few words even if he is beginning to say more when he feels he should, I've always liked Chief since the old games, and I'm glad to see him start to grow and open up now
*Steve Downes is such an absolutely incredible voice actor…every time Chief speaks you’re on the edge of your seat. Had the amazing pleasure of meeting him in real life and he truly is a genuinely kind human being; and a moment I will cherish forever. Whoever said, “Never meet your heroes”…has never met Steve Downes.🙏🏼*
343 may not be perfect, but their Humanization of John has consistently been top notch and heart wrenching
You can see hope on Griffin's face, he was happy that the chief was alive and when he dies we can feel sadness and anger in the chief...
I swear to god I almost cried when I saw griffins situation. He seemed like such a good leader. Such a good character, it really stung. I think it was a perfect scene, I just wish there was more time. It was very clear chief was hurting from the loss.
through the audio logs he seemed like a great friend to talk too, someone thatll have your back
It's okay, he's hanging out with Noble 6 in his cave
Listening to the audio logs broke me
@@jonathantanner7083 Spartans don't die. They just go missing in Noble 6's cave.
It's actually a big reason why him and the Arbitrator Thel 'Vadam where able to bond so well.
They're just soldiers
Just like him.
Look at it like this, in this game it seems more natural, while he has his more human moments, he isnt just spilling his heart out, you can tell that he's still rather closed off, even during his more emotional moments, not like how he acted during the soap opera like performances he gave in halo 4 and 5.
so i wouldn't say people hate chiefs human side, they just didn't like how it was portrayed in halo 4 and 5
i certainly didn't.
@@r3ktl3ss20 Even in H4, he was very closed off at times. There were multiple instances where they showed his inability to act like a normal human.
Like when Cortana was talking about feeling the warmth of a sun and during the aftermath of the Composer scene.
Plus there's a lot of differences between the situation in both cases.
In H4, he was helplessly watching his closest friend dying a slow painful death.
In Infinite, he was dealing with trust issues after Cortana's betrayal.
@@r3ktl3ss20 which is a fair criticism against Halo 4 tbh. I personally like that game but it relies too much on dialogue to convey a message rather than showing it to us.
Infinite shows us that Chief is hurt and is actually struggling emotionally. How killing Cortana isn't easy for him. I like that about Infinite. Show don't tell, as I always say.
You can tell at 9:05 the weapon started to cry a bit as you can just barley see blue tears form for a second
Okay. I never was big on Halo, but the line delivery on "I will not fail you." ACTUALLY gave me chills.
1:55 is pretty heart breaking man. The way Chief just looks at his fellow Spartan after he passes..
You can tell he's fighting tears behind that visor
@@TheDoomMaster It’s crazy how all we see is his helmet and visor but we can definitely tell the emotions that are running through the chief
Chief was a machine so long as he had a mission, but the one thing that pulled him out, however briefly, was the death of a Spartan (and also Halsey existing)
3:33 Legitimately made me choke up, almost cry, I never seen the Master chief be so sympathetic before, I've gotten so used to him being an unstoppable killing machine that seeing him act like a father made me happy is a way.
"We all fail. We all make mistakes. It's what makes us human." Absolute favorite line in this game.
Too cliche in my opinion
@@moonquartzs i get that but its unique for chief so i think it works
@@HAYJ04 gtfo with that elementary level quote. Chief has said better stuff than this.
@@moonquartzs i meant as in its unique for him to show this much humanity im not Saying he hasn't had better lines
@@moonquartzsMy brother in christ you don't have to get so damn offended over a simple opinion.
Infinite Chief is by far my favorite iteration of the Chief. Big and burly, older, wiser, more human but still the stoic and dutiful solider he needs to be for humanity.
343 has had their gaffes but they nailed Chief in Infinite.
5:35 Best moment in all of Halo. The conviction in Chief's voice plus the gentleness he says it with both brought me to tears and invigorated me
10:14 I was in absolute TEARS with this, its so well done and quite a nice touch on a rollercoaster of prior emotions
I think the part in the beginning where Chief hesitated to take the dead Marine's rifle should be, at least, an honorable mention of Chief's humanity and compassion.
Funny how chief pulled a kratos when he got hugged. He was gonna hug him back, but he became stoic and was paid him no mind
Echo 216: *hugs chief*
Chief: (hug back? No, will crush.)
I like to think it’s more like he had no idea what to do or how to hug him back
“Can’t show emotion wearing a helmet” my ass
Halo TV Series: "We need Chief to take his armor off so he can connect with the other characters and audience to show his budding humanity despite everything he's going through."
Halo the games: "...The armor stays on."
I can't believe she died after spending 15 dollars on that helmet. So sad.
"worth"
Who?
@@Bingus1507 The dead spartan....
I think most of us can agree that the way 343i has been humanizing Master Chief has been fantastic.
16:40 he was gonna hug him back but hesitated at the end
I think he stopped cause he might crush him if he did
@@uncheckedfoundry6701 Nope, Spartans can controll their Mjolnir Armor perfectly. Stated in the books.
I just loved the character of the pilot. What a way to refresh things up. Masterchief is somehow a middle point between human and AI if you think about it. A soldier. Just works so well, perfectly balanced.
7:24
this line is just so good. it really solidified how great this campaign actually is.
Theodore really didn't go down quietly. Had a screwdriver in a death grip. Helleva last stand.
The scene with Griffen always hurts, it confused me when the control was pulsing during the scene till I realized what it was
What's your avatar?
Yeah, his heartbeat
The way he says “I will not fail you” really hits… finally we get the proper humanization of Chief in one of the greatest ways possible
16:51 master chief gently takes the gun, halo 3 snatches the weapon out of Johnson's hand
He was pissed at the thought of working with the arbiter
4:37 - "I'm not YOU."
Every single dead Marine, Technician, Crewman and Officer that man saw die.
Seeing chief taking the blame for the brutes losing their planet shows that the chief isnt some mindless killing machine. It would be a nice to see brutes or other species talking to chief respectfully. Like how Escharum at the end.
Infinite def has flaws but honestly, this is my top 3 Halo games. 343i has done a great job. Hope they address the issues though.
1) Halo 2
2) Halo 3
3) Halo Infinite.
@@unhandydaddy5117 Wait... the rushed product that's Halo 2 is your number 1? Are you high or something?
@@cursedhawkins1305 the amount of story Halo 2 contributed is why it’s probably number 1. We got to get introduced to the covenant in a different light and the arbiter is a really good character and awesome counterpart to the chief.
@@cursedhawkins1305 Halo 2 is my favorite, on par with Halo 3 ODST, in second place is Infinite, third place is Halo 3
man escharums death hit me hard. I love chiefs explanation of why he showed him remorse at the end. I really wish there was a way where we could have saved him and convinced him to help us. but ill take what we got.
Some people are just too far gone
All he wanted was a warriors death, he didnt want to die an old man I think thats what got me
Losing your home planet is very difficult to process for anyone to be honest. Imagine seeing your city or town getting erased out of existence.
That was no remorse. That was respect. You never show any remorse or sympathy to the people who make up there mind. It is against their pride.
He died fighting for what he believed in doing what he thought was right, it's all he could have hoped for, Chief and He were monsters to eachother, that understood eachother, Chief's respect for a dieing warrior regardless of sides is one of the more powerful moments I've seen in anything for a while.
And Echo 216, just a civilian engineer in way over his head, thrust into what should have been a no win situation, he wasn't ready for any of this, got crushed by the pressure a few times, but he did a darn good job picking himself up each time, even with Chief there to help it's nothing to laugh at
17:42 "Then I will be called.... Cortana 2"
And everyone cherished!
when the camera shakes a little bit when he kneels down next to him crying, its just a nice little touch that makes me appreciate these cut scenes.
I love how chief starts this trilogy with lasky telling him not to view Spartans and humans as different
Now chief: 5:42
Good catch
Anyone notice during the last Cortana scene that Chief's hand shaking just a little bit?
"I failed her, I Will not fail you." goddamn I got goosebumps when I heard that in my playthrough
7:39
"Was it? I don't know anymore..."
You can tell that Master Chief was really hurt by Cortana's betrayal.
For those of you who done care or don't have an Xbox/ don't have infinite, in this scene 1:00 if you turn on rumble, you can feel this Spartans heartbeat slowing more and more through the controller until it stops.
off topic: but this game has some of the best face models and animations I've seen in a game imo
I think that Sam would be a really nice name for the weapon. A nice little homage to Samuel 034.
I would prefer that she picked "Hope"
It would be a nice name for her, also related to the marketing "Discover Hope"
343i MAKE IT HAPPEN!
This is some excellent writting and dialogue......Absolutely fantastic.
6:00 that moment he realised the single most badass dude in the galaxy has a singular goal of NOT failing him
These moments are why I love the campaign, ESPECIALLY how they handled Chief
at 5:25, when chief kneels, the camera shakes.
nice little detail showing how dense he is
