Dave, do all Tvs have that matte finish / anti-glare?
Finally! I have been thinking the same about glossy vs anti-glare for years. I was beginning to think I was nuts and it was only me that preferred glossy panels. It made no sense to me that all the devices mobile enough to take outside in the sun had glossy panels but then the giant monitor that you set up indoors in a room that you normally have some level of control over has a frosty layer over it to "protect you from reflections"! 🤦🏻🤷🏻
Personally I think it's good for TVs, because most people don't have very good light isolation inside their house. Normal blinds will leave noticeable glare on a glossy finish. But ultimately having the choice would be best.
@@peaj4812 AFAIK TVs often rely on more advanced techniques than a simple matte coating (like interference-based anti-reflection coating), and IIRC VA panels have some inherent anti-reflective qualities. Also pixels generally being bigger probably reduce the disadvantages significantly
Do you also like glossy over matt?
I used to think i am the only one too, had faced rage from many Indian tech enthusiasts for favoring glossy panels.
I had lenovo ideapad y510p which had glossy display which was amazing.
@@peaj4812 not to mention a phone can be tilted or brightness increased momentarily.
There is a reason all phones and tablets are glossy, it's just better. I have had mat displays on my Thinkpad`s at work and its awful
I just wish companies would finally get over the extreme and quite cringy ''gaming'' designs with RGB's flying everywhere and random thick ugly corners, hexagons and the most bizarre-looking choices in every aspect of trying to look ''cool''. And start to make PC's, laptops, monitor's, keyboards and mouses with minimalist and sleek designs but the same specs as ''gaming'' products.
Especially the color red. Jesus fucking christ start with that please.
Yes. All I can say is yes.
Couldn't agree more
Razer does that. I think that is why people think razer is razer. And for the laptops, they started to change. Asus Zephyrus series Razer Blade series and some more they all look minimalist and thin.
That's exactly what I want but the truth is there are high demand for RGBs powered devices.
I've had glossy monitors, and though it looks incredible at first glance... _it drives you crazy after a while._ You can't open the blinds, you can't have variable lighting in the room, and you'll hate your own reflection after a week. There's good reason most of them are matte.
Congratulations
@@landinobin4835 Lol. Yay!!
Was that the old Apple ones with a huge gap between the glass and the panel itself? If so, yeah those are nuts. This one looked better, actually just like my LG oled TV..... We are not complaining that much for TVs, or are we?
@@cjansson you don't spend 10+ hours before a tv screen every day (probably). It's not the same with monitors. Lighing conditions change throughout the day, you sit close and see your own reflection unless you crank up the brightness. Ofc, you can sit in a room without natural lighting and ventillation but that's not a good thing over long periods of time.
Yeah, he was talking about laptops and phones... like... dude, I wish all those were matte too bc I can't stand the reflections.
I've owned the 1080p Sony 3D Display for the last 10 years and to this day i would tell you that the image quality is superior over many monitors and I'm just now realizing it's because of it's "mirror like" finish. It truly does make the image so much crisper with better colors

@@paulhope3401 my family basically went through 3 LCD/LED TVs in 10 years, all are LG or Samsung. Now we don't have a TV in the house anymore and it's great. Modern consumer goods are built to fail so you keep buying new stuff. I don't know how yours lasted so long.
I need that glossy display, like, right now! It's so cool and refreshing to finally see a modern non-Apple glossy monitor. Say what you will about Eve and their business practices, but at least they're trying to shake up the monitor market with some much needed innovation.

Totally agree @Dave2D! I don’t understand why good, glossy monitors are so hard to find. That gloss indeed makes a huge difference with text and colors! Just imagine an LG OLED with a matte screen.
That’s the problem I’m facing with the new OLED 240hz monitor, it’s Matte finish 😩
The level of time and detail Dave puts into how he shoots his videos is unmatched in his genre of content creation. The way the monitor colors match his shirt is so cool! I LOVE his work!

I feel like I had a glossy screen from HP back in the day (2010-ish), and while it wasn't the best monitor, the colors certainly popped.
Fully agree. My old 27" Apple Cinema display has so much better image quality to my eye, than my Asus ROG 32" ultrawide matte display
Even the oem dell 1080p monitor we have that came in bundle with an Inspiron we bought in 2014 has a glossy screen
It makes colors pop so much. Like a TV vs like a competition IPS panel. I have 3 MSI competition panels and they aren’t greatest on color but I think that gloss could really make them feel a little more vibrant
That's the reason why I bought the 4K Razer 15 Advanced. I turned off touch inputs so now I only enjoy the glossy finish on this great panel!
I have searched so long for a glossy display. It was so harsh to find some, had to settle for a matte display... Thank you so much for shedding light on this topic.
I've been waiting for this to happen for a while, I hope glossy screens pick up steam and become popular on desktop monitors!
I hope same thing happens on laptops as well
But why, don't your eyes get tired? I used a glossy display for 1month and personally it was a bad experience. Colors were great but whites used to make my eyes burn and I would get headache
@@mastroitek probably eyes get tired a little faster, but what's the point of using a display at all if you NEVER see the pristine, natural picture the creator of it intended it to?
@@tabalugadragon3555 I get it, but it is not for me. I think not just gaming models... but for all use types situations, business, home use or gaming with the option of matte you know. I mean when apple were using glossy on their panels it wasn't because of gaming it was because the colors were richer and coupled with an anti-glare coating....they pretty much built a panel for all use types.

Have you ever worked in an office environment? Cuz then you'd know what matters for an office display and what doesn't!
@I suck at being bad lmfao, because TVs and monitors are used for the exact same thing at the exact same time of day and therefore what replies to one automatically and exactly applies to the other as well, right?
Go figure!
@I suck at being bad strange, I have 2 LCD and 2 OMOLED TVs in my house, all 4 have a matte finish. and on the other hand, you fix a tv and it never moves, so reflections would not even be an issue
One of the reasons I still LOVE high resolution CRT screens is because of the glass screen. It seems like a small detail but the richness and "wetness" it gives to images is amazing, including the deep blacks and no halos. These are the exact details I want in modern gaming displays. Just give me the option, even if its not the most common unit.
All my CRT's have matte coatings...
I heard CRTs have low refresh rates, which may cause eye strain.
But you do have a point about glass screens. If CRT is the same type of screen used in arcade cabinets, the graphics are buttery AF.

When I saw the two monitors side by side, I thought Eve just figured out to have the best of two worlds: an anti-glare layer that can be switched on and off. You know, like one of those new crazy public bathroom cover glasses that turn into frosted glass when you locked the door. But they kinda just figured out a gaming monitor with more mobile device-like screen? I mean, it's still crazy that industry didn't think of this before but this is realization, not innovation
Woah there
Electrochromic glass.

I too have always preferred glossy finish vs Matt on my monitors but sadly it's rarely an option. What I did to my old screen was apply a layer of ceramic car coating on top and it made a difference. Not completely glossy but better for sure. You can give it a shot and if you are scared of applying a permanent coating try a SiO2 sealant like Reload from Carpro or similar

It makes sense for a portable device. I remember when my original matte laptop screen broke and I had to replace it with some glossy aftermarket one, I had to be much more mindful of the glare. It's kind of a tradeoff, antiglare vs clarity
Image quality is the same, display experience is different. Image quality is what resolution and definition it puts out. Even if it was tapped off or painted black. The display panel still has the same image quality. Small detail :)

I recently purchased a Dell S2721DGF and after a month, I realized how much I love my iMac 5k 27in 2020's untextured screen. Despite having similar sRGB and Adobe RGB coverage, texts and colors simply pop out nicer on my iMac. The matte finish on the Dell mutes the colors a bit, similar to Dave's comparison here between the 2 Eve monitors. Really the only thing it's missing is a high refresh rate, so hopefully someone would come out with a 1440p/4k display with an untextured screen soon.
Thank god a company is finally even entertaining this idea! I'm an artist and designer, I'd fork over a few paychecks for a non-apple, gloss monitor with a good refresh rate and resolution so I could game AND work without compromise.
I hope Eve does make this and follows through on the delivery. This is something I'd buy in a heartbeat.
Totally agree. I remember like 10-15 years ago a friend of mine bought a Dell XPS AIO and it had a glass screen on it, my god the colours looked so much more intense and vivid, particularly in gaming, and in RTS type games it even made the units look like they had a bit of depth to them, even though obviously they didn't as it wasn't a 3D screen.

Hi Dave, I do follow your channel and really like your videos. Personally, I did not like the glossy screens initially. Around 2010, I bought myself a gaming laptop, Dell XPS or something. But when I started to use it I felt that glossy is much better than matte finish. It helps with the contrast ratio and ultimately helps the overall picture/video quality. Now, I would actually prefer glossy over matte.
Finally!! Was asking the same question…I understand the matte displays for laptops which can be used outside but we need glossy monitors for indoor use!
A lot of the older monitors used to have glossy displays. I still have a cheap Korean 1440p 120hz overclockable monitor from back in the day and it still looks great in comparison to some of the mid-range matte 1440p gaming monitors available today.
Do you think they would be a good purchase now? Definitely interested
This has always been a thing. If you compare an old glossy monitor to a newer matt panel it still beats it hands down. Manufactures moved away from glass because it's no doubt cheaper and you had consumers complaining about the glare instead of shutting their curtains or blinds.
@@nathanbrown492No, these monitors have some quirks and I think modern 1440p monitors are a better overall buy.
They used to definitely be worth it back in the day when no manufacturer had a 1440p 120hz monitor or when the 1440p high refresh rate IPS monitors were around $1000 and you could get these for around $300. Nowadays, you can get an ips high refresh rate 1440p monitor in that price range during sales and not have to deal with the headache of getting something shipped from you from Korea, having to overclock, etc.

I was searching for this one last year but couldn’t find single monitor that had glossy panel and high refresh rate. At one point I was planning to buy Apple Max monitor with glossy panel one.
I returned a monitor with a matte finish the first day I bought it because I legitimately could not see details when looking at the screen. I prefer glossy displays any day although light reflection is still an issue. I think there should be a choice because of improved performance as well as accessibility.
Agree! Matte looks bad to my eyes
@ I suck at being bad
Matte screens just absolutely destroy the image quality. And they don't really handle reflections any better, imo. I just don't understand how people think that having reflections smeared across your screen looks any better than having a more defined reflection in a smaller area of your screen. I mean, either way is not ideal to me. The only solution is to control the lighting in your room. And for an entertainment device, like a gaming monitor, in your own home this should not be an issue.
Honestly having a glossy a display on a gaming laptop would make the gaming experience SO MUCH BETTER!! I have a gaming laptop and it has a matte display, while my brother has an HP Envy ultrabook. I noticed him one day playing Assassin's Creed 2 on it and I immediately noticed that the picture quality of the game looked so much better on his laptop then my gaming laptop which has a big fat discreet GPU powering everything. Yet still the same game didn't look as good on my laptop just because mine has a matte display and his ultrabook has a glossy one
As a software developer can't tolerate looking at the gloss screen monitor in cubicles with randomly placed over head lights but for home setup where we control the light position it can be good .
Yep. Fighting glare to see code is literally the worst.
Most people are likely consuming content, making gloss acceptable. Ideally, there would be an option (eg. a user-removable layer or panel).
same issue, tried glossy laptop screens in the past and couldn't handle all the reflections. Really only useful in pitch black rooms for consuming content and at that point you might as well buy a TV.
My experience with glossy laptop screens is, at low NITs of brightness, the glare is really noticeable. It’s then into the territory of having to trade off battery life for a brighter display. Less of an issue admittedly on gaming laptops where it’ll probably be plugged into the wall anyway.
MacBooks have super bright displays and they’re glossy
Most laptops that have a glossy screen (years old now) barely go over 250 nits and are worse than mirrors
I remember to use the Dell S23 Monitor with a Glossy screen. I really liked it but as a Gamer and a Graphic Designer. I badly want the faster refresh and better response time so I gave up on my old monitor. I hope brands would think about this soon. We have glossy screens on all the devices we take with us and use outdoors and in varying lights throughout the day but not on the screens we exclusively use indoors in a fixed place where we can control the light sources. Makes perfect sense lol
Honestly kind of surprised by the difference on camera. I use a glossy 4kTV as a primary monitor next to a matte high refresh gaming monitor daily, and it's honestly never been this apparent. Now I'm not sure I can unsee it.

I have wood shutters and blackout curtains, just because I hate screen glare while gaming. So reflections would be a non-issue for me with this glossy screen. Definitely would like to see more monitors like this in the future.
We used to have glossy options around the change from CRT to TFT and they fell out of fashion. I had one on my lenovo laptop with a 860m a while back and before that a toughbook with an ATI 1650ish
YES!!!! I remember my first LCD monitor. A Sony 4:3 LCD from 2005, it had a glossy screen, it was the best! But sadly was never able to find a modern replacement. This is one of the reasons why my old iMac has super bright colors... glossy goodness!
Great, just yesterday I installed the third identical Display and now you made me want to have three new ones.
The thing that can help deal with reflections (to an extent) is just a panel of plastic on each side of the monitor. They can be foldable/removable. There are some monitors which have these shields.
Holy crap I feel this shock every time I go from my MacBook to my desktop monitor. I’ve been wondering if anyone makes a huge panel 34”+ that has a glossy anti glare like my MacBook
LOL, It's mat for a reason. It's less fatiguing if you're a professional. Function over form instead of form over function.
Image clarity is so important, so I've been frustrated at anti-glare coatings for years. Especially etched glass on screens for creative work, like Cintiqs for example. It absolutely ruins the image quality, and it feels like people don't care..? It's wild to me.
I had a glossy display from LG years ago. Same with a Dell display I had and right now Im using a display with a semi gloss and I am really liking it. Gigabyte makes surprisingly good monitors.
So this has been an option if you look deep enough. The funny part is look at cell phones and tablets they are glossy as hell and used in direct sunlight. And that is where HDR comes into play I think now that monitors can get bright enough to outshine reflections that is also playing a big role in the comeback of glossy displays.
What monitor are you using now?
I just put a glossy lamination sheet on my gaming laptop Matt display panel about 1.5 years ago and it did the same thing for me. My display looked fabulous ever since I did that.
When's that STUDIO TOUR coming?
I used to have an 1080p glossy monitor from Acer as my first monitor on my then gaming PC
I now have a UWQHD 34" Monitor and I am constantly thinking: "It should be better looking now, but it's not" and the whole time I thought I was crazy
I agree, reflections are a non issue when gaming. I try to keep the room as dim as possible anyway, it wouldn't bother me at all if the screen was glossy.
THANK YOU for speaking out on this issue! I cannot believe this has not been addressed yet by high tech companies. Get on it LG!
I am so surprised this is the first time I've seen a video made on this topic! I have always hated how anti-glare displays took away from the contrast produced by glossy displays. Great video!
I remember removing these matte finish layer to my CRT monitor(even though I have to deal with static buildup) and it's astoundingly look so much better. I also did that with my older LCD monitor and the text are sharper and colours are more vibrant. I will NEVER go back to matte finish on a monitor.
I've always thought this. Dave2D speaks my language on this one. To manufacturers and marketers, yes, I do want a glossy screen.
I have been using a Glossy Dell S2240L IPS for the last 8 years, and this is why I have never bothered to upgrade (?). I hate the matte coating for this exact reason, So glad people are finally noticing, maybe there'll be a new trend of glossy monitors, and I'll finally be able to get a 144hz panel.
I used to peel off the matte vinyl from my gaming laptops when possible and was always amazed how great it looked afterwards. But yeah. If there is a lot of light and reflection, it sucks. Also, some of the vinyls are polarized, so be mindful if you want to peel off anyhing.
I'm on the exact opposite. After using a laptop with a matte display that is bright, really collor accurate, looks gorgeous, and even supports touch and pen(Acer's ConceptD) I want this type of display on ALL of my devices, including TVs and phones. It looks ever so slightly worse than glossy, but in any conditions that aren't exactly perfect lighting, it looks so much better, no distracting mirrored lamps, no reflections, not anything that is not what is supposed to be displayed there
Completely agree with you. I had no idea there were this many people enjoying looking at reflections all day 😂
agree
Thank you. reflections while using a PC is probably the last thing I wanna ask for. But hey, as long as there is the matte option available, I'm good
@@trailchaser2 because as in the video, even without huge lighting near the laptop, the matte display is already looks diffuse in the first place. The whole black on matte does not looks black with the plastic feel screen.
With people that prefer the glossy one mostly because the glossy provide way clean, clear and sharp feel image. Even with minor reflection of light which if you refer Dave video, the black on matte is not real black especially the top part of the screen. It's grey. And for us who prefer glossy, we just like clean and sharp image even with minor light reflections. And btw both matte and glossy reflect light just the reflection on matte is more diffuse but affecting more area than glossy.
Beside at least for me who prefer glossy, there is some kind of brain thinking that make the glossy screen looks more clean and better when matte which feel abit plastics. Hence, even with lighting reflection, knowing how good the the glossy display looks in controlled environment, the brain trick us to feel that glossy image looks better and cleaner no matter how serious the lighting reflection is.
OMG we need more glossy screens TODAY!!! You can tell the difference right away when the video starts.
The reflections are not a big deal when you're engaged with the content on the screen.
I have the glossy Steam Deck screen, a huge Samsung Tablet and the Google Pixel that both have awesome glossy screens. The glare is not even a thought unless you actually want to look for it then your mind focuses on it.
I don't pay attention to the glare when gaming or reading so it's a non issue, the screens are so much brighter than the indoor surroundings, I can still use both screens in bright rooms even.
Now with a 27"-32" glossy panel I can always dim the lights one way or another, because you best believe I'm gonna want the best experience ever.
I'm just hoping OLEDs get cheaper soon and bring glossy screens so I can finally jump on the band wagon.
32" QHD (2560x1440p) OLED Glossy panel for $450-$550 would be perfect...still expensive. But considering how 50"-65" inch OLED TVs are cheaper than some of the $800-1000 monitors nowadays, I think it's time to make gaming screens cheaper to reflect their smaller size so more of us buy them.
It's been 2 years and other brands haven't adoped glossy display options for their lineup
I feel like Apple’s old Cinema displays used this approach - super-glossy, super-awesome (for their time).
And they changed it because people hated reflections.
@@AuxHex No they didn’t. Apple still produce all its displays glossy. They recently added a matte as an option for an extra price. but all Apple mobiles, macbooks, imacs, xdr display, they all have glossy panel by default.
Apple MBPs used to have a matte option, like, in the 2000s, and I miss it so much. I can understand a glossy display on a monitor, but laptops, ugh. Way less control over environments. I’m an animator/vfx artist and glossy screens make me crazy. Trying to work on location or on the go, can’t see your screen cuz it’s reflecting the sky or lights.
I was saying this for years! So glad to finally have someone on my side😄 this is literally the reason why I went with the 2020 razer blade pro 4K 120hz, not because of resolution but touch screens tent to have a glossy coating wich looks just so much better + black glas bezel instead of cheap looking plastic bezel
I went with the OLED 4k display. Naturally glossy. OLED is incredible. Worth the refresh rate sacrifice
@@soberanisfam1323 OLED monitors didn't exist until a few months ago. Even now, the only one costs $4000.
@@abubakrakram6208 oh I meant OLED. 4k laptop display. My bad
@@abubakrakram6208 OLED monitors have existed for awhile now. Alienware made a laptop with an OLED screen on it years ago (I owned one briefly - and hated it). The tech has been around it's just starting to be more widely adopted in the monitor space now.
@@mattparsons8598 You’re right, there were 3 until this year, that I know of. 1 was made by Dell for a limited time and was pretty good, and the other 2 were made by Asus/Eizo and were terrible.
I had an HP Pavilion x360 for a few years leading up to the end of 2020. I always loved that screen. It had touchscreen capabilities, so because of that, it had a glossy finish. I never even used the touchscreen, because I didn't want to get finger prints all over my display. I had never seen a laptop screen like that before, and I loved it. Then, at the end of 2020, I bought the HP Omen, which was my first Gaming Laptop, and gave my Pavilion to my mother, and while I still have, and love my HP Omen, I am, to this day, jealous that she has that glossy screen. Like you said in the video, it just looked amazing. It made everything just look incredibly clean, and sleek. I would LOVE to get a Gaming Laptop with a glossy screen. Anyway, great video!
Im so happy that glossy desktop screens have chance of finally becoming available, I wanna finally upgrade my pc and was actually thinking about modifying matte screen by removing diffusion layer as crazy as it might sound, but if I had chance to buy one it would win my money even with lack of other features as long as it doesn't have kitschy gaming design...
Just want to add at the end that I would loooove to see FLAT, NOT CURVED 4k ultrawide screen with glossy panel and hopefully some good refresh rate and color accuracy, man that would be a dream
I don't quite understand this. Maybe it's been too many years since last time or maybe it's a regional difference (EU) but every time I went to an electronics store the glossy screens were a vast majority for sure. Still using my old SyncMaster 2443 from 2008 because of that and this ol matte screen is so comfortable to use even in a bright room.
I remember those dell s-series with glass screens. Those were really beautifull for the time. Never made new versions and i'll never understand why.
I've been using a Lenovo YOGA s740 with a 4k glossy display, and honestly the only reason I still have it, it's cause of this display, media just looks sooo good on it.
I bet it looks good when there is nothing being reflected from a mirror-like screen...
@@sleptiq I have an Asus TUF 4K monitor good colours and everything, but that matt coat on top takes out that contrast and sharpness. Always preferred my laptop display over that.
Used to go after matt screen because it's less reflective, but now not so much after using TV as my PC monitor, everything you said were true.
Agree! Had a 2015 MacBook with the coating issue. Cleaned it up with alcohol and it looked astonishing. But yes outside it was kind of hard to work on.
Thank you for making this. I remember when I first built my pc I wanted to buy a glossy monitor. Options were so limited and I settled for matte.
Then there's me who's just bought an anti-glare matte screen protector for my laptop because I hate glossy screens 🤣
You're a weirdo. All of you matte screen lovers are. And you've made us have to live with horrible image quality on gaming monitors
Finally. Tried to push for this, wish it came out on launch so I could have bought it
thank you dave2d to look at this!
I find myself always find glossy screens look way more transparent, if there is no strong light source in the room. We need more high quality glossy monitors!
Actually I've seen that difference on my display when I apply a liquid product to clean the screen: it looks better before being dry again.
yes, I did that too! the black is much richier when still wet ;)
Whenever I watch my wife play StarCraft 2 on her iMac Pro, I’m a bit jealous of her monitor. Sure it’s only 60hz, but man the sharpness and pop of the colors. I had her try to play on my monitor, which is a 1440p 144hz panel and she was not happy! Lol. Can’t wait for the glossy, 4K, high refresh rate gaming monitors to come.
Couldn't agree more.
i had a gaming laptop with cheap glossy screen but i found it look much better with more vivid colors than my other mat screens
I've been saying this for years. Thank you for sharing, it's important that influencers get this message out!
