The fact that a few decades ago, screens were giant and now they’re quite literally almost paper thin is incredible.
Yes, and they also had >10K:1 contrast ratios with perfect 8-bit colour reproduction with measly 80-150 nits while these pieces of shit can't go past 3K:1 without blasting your face with non-uniform 400-1000 nits and often are 6 bit-per-subpixel with exception with self-destructing OLEDs that are… well, self-destructing.

When you factor in all the hubs and external power required for this, a regular portable display seems far more practical. Still quite thin, and only requires one cable.
Exactly. As a sysadmin where I need to visit multiple locations, with lots of servers without any monitors attached, I thought this might me a good idea. However too many dongles make that a pain in the ass. Few years ago I remember seeing a USB only display which if I remember correctly worked fine.
I don't even think the way they did it makes it all that impressive, it is kind of a hack. It is just something they can put on the side of the box. "We made the thinnest monitor in the world by removing most of the monitor from the display and turned that into a dongle." The thickness of an item is measured at the thickest part and setting aside the dongle thing the monitor is not much thinner than phones and about the same as some laptops.

Okay so I actually bought one of these displays after watching this video and there is some key differences from the demo model he has here.
First the display is much heavier then the one he has (about 700g)
Secondly, the reason for the weight, the finished product's base extends all the way across the back of the screen. giving the screen a rigid metal backplate which is extremely sturdy, more than most laptop screens.
Thirdly the connector jankiness is gone, at least it doesn't cut out at all if bumped (though you can still move it around a bit).
Fourthly the little slider on the other side when held down adjusts the brightness of the display.
Please note even if your motherboard has a type c it wont be able to run this display unless that type c has some access to graphics (like an igpu or a discrete pass through).
My Lenovo Thinkpad P1 recognizes the screen no problem but couldn't power it.
Monitoring the external power usage peeked at 15 watts. It is unclear how much it is pulling from the laptop.
Thank you for the detailed update, decided to pull the trigger on this and see if I can't get it to work with my Latitude 7490 (they mention PD in the manual, but if not, external power is fine with me).
@@SamIAm254 I've also discovered if you have two type c ports you might be able to use both of them on the hub to get sufficient power draw, depending on the spec of the laptop.

that's pretty badass, would love to have 2 of these hanging/hinged on my laptop screen... can't have enough monitors!
Strap a raspberry pi and a small battery pack on the back and you have a portable laptop-tablet thingy
Do that and put it in your car and you got a really nice media setup that can run for hours on an external battery!
I've been looking into those that live in RVs and such and this would be pretty nice to have for those who don't want a big tv taking up too much space.
Not to mention with the Switch if it was possible it would make a mobile setup even better, I've got an adapter on mine that outputs hdmi from the switch without the bulk of the dock so this would be pretty cool to have in a hard case for traveling etc.
Edit: Actually there are better ways to do this setup if you're willing to give up the "ultra thin" part and get a different portable monitor.
Not really cause theres no digitizer on this thing So eithet attach a touch panel or mouse/keyboard and you got yourself laptop/tablet thingy which would most likely take more space than an ultrabook and be totally unpractical to setup.

cool thing as a pc expert to check for failed screens, just plugin this thing and check if ur clients monitor or graphics card is dead :D
The connection and compatibility is a little wonky though, so you can't be completely sure :P and you will need usb c to hdmi / dvi /dp adapter cables. That a lot of dongles and cables.
Was machstn du hier? :D
there are mobile screens for technitians. not that thin and certainly not 4k but with all popular video interfaces. If the graphic card is dead for good most motherboards will beep it for you if you attach a pc speaker to them. Or.. if the said pc is password protected and has a windows pro on it and remote access enabled you can always rdp into it from your phone. Lot of "ands" in that one but you dont need to carry stuff arround. You could also create a small live linux distro on a cd or pendrive which at startup starts a rdp service and audiosignals its ready and then rdp into it.
Regarding my own mobile setup, what I already do and have done since last spring is phone stand + bluetooth keyboard + bluetooth mouse. That combo fits snugly in an old camera bag and only has the downside of the screen size still being small. If I wanted something larger format, that would be a folding phone(either the actual high-tech easily-destroyed kind, or the LG dual screen). An actual monitor, even a thin one, gets into laptop territory (but on that note, I would be interested in seeing laptop designs that decouple the screen.)
0:40 when you’re so rich that $200 are “just” $200
I would rather have a thicker monitor than more cable management and dongles.

Awesome tech, 4K at this size and weight (Portability) is freaking innovative. Imagine if they made a durable "as thin" keyboard hub to go with this? Both nested into each other like the cover already does. You get a laptop at only 300 grams + battery pack. Forget the type C connector and use dock (pins). Seriously, manufacturers should re-consider using this external battery "way to go" with mini laptops in general. It is probably a nice extension for DEX users on Samsung phones and tablets. But then you have 2 displays, hmm? Just put a 7nm Z8350 cpu in (the keyboard or) the display itself at 2 Watt TDP, right? You have a full 4K (STARTREK) tablet and the rest is accessories. Might consider going camping with this with a 5 Watt (backside thinfilm) edge to edge solar panel (Built-in). I recommend you to be gentle with this 007 gadget, store it somewhere safe it probably gets forbidden somehow like #HUAWEI 5G Tech . It's that innovative probably to the #NSA?
What if CREE is contracted to make a single dot (1 watt) light source so squeeze tiny but powerful enough (500 nits) to illuminate through ingenious re-fracturing the backside of the 4K LCD? then you get a 3 Watt 4K Laptop with computing power at only 300 grams.

Linus: The thinnest monitor in the world
L.G: 'The time has come, execute order 69
I'm thinking drones with nice cameras, since it covers Adobe RGB well. And you can run it on an external battery. DJI will probably make a drone remote with a scaler, so you won't need to run the hub as well.
Hey Linus, you and the team have seriously improved these videos recently. As a long time viewer, you've continually made your content more fluid and educational, and your ads more while still maintaining your most entertaining aspects ;P
There are more solid ones like ThinkVision M14 from Lenovo that matches X1 Carbon or little bigger one from Asus as well.
If it was a bit cheaper, I would buy a ton of them and make a wall of them....
Not gonna happen with the side facing connctor, you'd have gaps for the plugs making it unusable.
If they come up with a slightly thicker one where the cable goes flat in at the back with a Vesa mount on top? Yeah, i'd totally see that being done.
I see you alone
In a room
And there are a lot of wires
God that is a lot of wires
You could overlap the bottom part for an edgeless experience.
Kr0noZ Yeah also not gunna happen because he ain’t a millionaire. Lol.
You can't adjust many of the settings like contrast.
i noticed the lint on linus shit in 4k, i love the episode!
2:10 i looked back towards my door haha damn you Linus!
I think a 12 inches monitor has to have like 1440p 120 or 144 hz instead of 4k 60. That will be interresting.
Exactly
Absolutely! 4K on such a small monitor is a waste of resources!
@@LuisC7 *Sony 4K phone nervously walk by*
Arsene Lupin why less resolution would be better?
@@leecaste lower resolutions require less gpu resources to run. If the pixel density at 1440p is already good enough for you, there isn't much point in it being 4k. You'll just be using more resources
Also, I think the differences in going from 60 to 120 hz would be more valuable than 1440p to 4k at that size of display
It's perfect! Just add a keyboard, a mouse, a battery bank, a device for processing.
It's So much better and easy to use than a laptop.
My first thought was that it'd be perfect to to put this in the back-seat of the car for the kid to use during long car rides. Mind you, I have neither kids nor car! :p
Man, thats an interesting screen.
Main pros to me would be for DIY projects where you hide away the cabling etc.
Potential uses being for vehicle applications where you want something that sort of acts as a separate head unit running android auto or something.
(Or In my case, I want a second screen for my Pi4 running Android11).
I could see this incorporated into other objects, such as a desk, computer chasis or heck even kitchen cabinet.
