Portable Monitors. Any good?

  • A test of a portable monitor. Handy for dual-screen laptop use, a stow-able TV (when paired with a HDMI source) or a compact gaming screen - especially when it comes to the Nintendo Switch which can output to it in 1080p over USB-C. It's definitely not perfect though.
Here are some links to the one I bought - look out for deals and vouchers and also have a look through the alternatives that show up - It's almost certain this is not the best one available.

    EXTRA INFO
No I haven’t got the stand the wrong way around
Yes it shows it like this in the manual - there’s pictures and everything.
No it won’t fit any other way (notice that the bottom rear of the screen is wider than the top and also isn’t magnetic - therefore the cover can’t be flipped over or orientated in any other configuration)
Don’t believe me? - buy one, you’ll find out.

    Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
    A) Patrons / techmoan usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.

That isn't even close to what Chinese comrades do to Russian language if they aren't wise enough to hire even a half-bad Russian proofreader (although recently I encountered a perfect user manual for a flashlight from AliExpress, in four languages: my native Russian, my almost native (32 years out of 40) English, and also German, and Japanese (of the latter two I have some vague idea) - and not only it is written and edited by a very good editor, it is also designed rather sensibly, considering all the intricacies of proper Russian typography (and that, among everything else I do for living or as a hobby, is my field of expertise for more than 20 years). I found NOTHING to complain about except some really minor stuff that would be forgivable even in an originally Russian manual for an original Russian and Russian-made product or device.
Also, for Chinese, all Latin, Cyrillic, Amharic, Arabic, etc. symbols look pretty much like Chinese writing looks to us Westerners, and an average Chinese can hardly tell a from e, let alone i from L (so those NOKLA phones, - one of which has a place in Shenzhen Museum, one of many very fine tourist attractions of that great city, - were probably not only an evasion of trademark lawsuits, but also a product of such nonchalance).
More pepper to your salt: ten years ago at Shenzhen Zoo, tiger and lion territory, they had posters with sayings and proverbs about tigers and lions. In Simplified Chinese, of course, but also in pinyin (transliteration - that could have been modern Chinese writing if a relevant decision would have been taken during the Cultural Revolution, like it happened in Vietnam during French occupation, or in Turkey after the Republican revolution of 1923, when Turkey abandoned the old Arabic-based Osman writing). What's the reason to have posters in pinyin, I wondered, as pinyin is a thing much less relevant for an average Chinese (especially Chinese kids) than Latin script or even English for an average Russian at, say, Novosibirsk or Perm zoo? The answer, in all seriousness, was that “it's for foreigners, they use Latin script, so they should understand what's written there”. So, even in the fourth most important (after Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou) Chinese city, at a major tourist attraction (Shenzhen Zoo is excellent, you have my word, and I've seen many a zoo), the designer had very little clue that not all foreigners can read any Latin. Probably the difference between transliteration and translation got, well, lost in translation...

A good review, thank you. I have had something like this in mind for setting up AV receivers and other such things. Using them for audio only away from a TV is a real pain so a HDMI screen, no matter how bad so the settings can be seen easily is a boon. As an example, a pioneer DVD player I want to use the digital audio outputs, BUT, it is set for HDMI and will only send audio out of the optical audio once it has connected via HDMI as set, fixing is much easier without having to drag the thing to a TV, now it's easy to take the screen to the device. Of course once set to SCART only again... So wonder in any do composite and HDMI.

Still I'd probably rather use my legal right to copy a DVD and play that on my phone. To be fair I don't watch many Hollywood style movies and usually just watch free video content off YT (like these videos) anyway so I'd ultimately have no use for this today.

@@VariantAEC yeah, a home media server and ripping your discs is a great way to go. You can watch it on any of your devices, and move between them without losing your place. A lesser-used feature allows you to rip high bitrate larger files and then if your wifi or mobile data or CPU is too flaky for that bandwidth it can re-encode the video in real time up to the maximum your device can support. So it’ll look a lot better than regular streaming too. (This applies for pretty much all the home media servers, Plex, Emby, or other FOSS alternatives.)

I purchased the ASUS ZenScreen Touch MB16AMT recently to go with my ZenBook Duo. Thankfully I was able it on Amazon because it was sold out at pretty much every other US retailer including my local MicroCenter. Literally none available in the US, they’re still waiting on more to ship from China or Taiwan (I don’t remember where they are manufactured).
I must say, it’s wonderful. 15.6” IPS 1080P display with multiple viewing modes, DisplayPort and power via the USB-C port, Micro HDMI for devices that don’t have USB-C, an internal battery, 3 input modes for the Type C (phone, PC with charging the display, PC without charging the display), aluminum body, magnetic folding cover/stand (like the ones he showed that stick out the front), and adequate speakers as well. NOT TO MENTION THEY INCLUDE A 2 foot (0.6m) type c cable, and a 3 foot (0.9m) HDMI to Micro HDMI cable, and a type C to Type A adapter so you can plug it into a full-power USB3.0 port on a pc or into the AC wall adapter they provide.
My only complaints about it are that the “joystick” control for the monitor menu is subpar compared to the build quality, and that the manual says nothing about the fact that there’s a “no charging” mode for the type C, so I was surprised that it wasn’t charging from my thunderbolt 4 port at first. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t make the AC adapter have a USB C port instead of the type A, they wouldn’t need to include the C to A adapter then
Overall, getting it refurbished for $300 US was a great deal in my opinion, but I would have been happy to pay the full 350 for it new.

      I mean yes, but no.
The LCD panels are manufactured by a component company and sold to integrators. Integrators include people who make TVs, monitors, laptops, HMIs...sometimes the manufacturer and integrator are the same company, but usually not. Of course the integrators can ask for special changes and stuff, but they aren't usually redesigning the component from scratch.
For reasons I hope are obvious, the vast majority of these screens are 16:9. It's what most people want, so it's far and away what is most available in monitor/TV appropriate sizes.
As far as actual size of the screen, the component manufacturers make standard sizes and they are only going to make something different if the client pays enough for it. It's easier as an integrator to pick a standard panel size and design for that rather than pay extra for something weird.
So, there isn't really any need for an "overstock" theory. Somebody says "I want to manufacturer a small television", so they go to a LCD panel manufacturer and say "what sizes you got?". Then they design the TV around those sizes. No conspiracy.

Good timing with this video - I've been looking at these screens to mount into a Mustang race car as a digital dash, pair it with the laptop used for tuning the ECU, using a CAN-to-USB adapter to hook up to the ECU's CAN bus network to pull the digital dash data from, and using RealDash for the digital dash software/GUI. Will obviously require the laptop(or a Windows tablet) hooked up for the dash to function, but it's a race car(with a license plate) so the laptop will be with it all the time anyway.

Portable traditionally means it has a battery, none of the 'portable' screens I found (researching over 150 different models) had batteries. However the really cheap screen I brought was still very good. I can plug it in to the USB-C port of my identical size (15 inch) surface tablet/laptop. It does mean I can use it on holiday or when I am away from home any time. No noticeable RF noise (important to me as a radio ham). Audio is adequate but not amazing, but doesn't distort even when I use a software audio booster. The stand is ok, uses 4 thumb screws to hold the stand/ cover on, uses standard VESA spacing so it can be mounted to a wall mount or multi-monitor stand, or to screw a Raspberry Pi to the back in a suitable case. Thinking of getting another for this purpose, the touchscreen version was only another £35 and using with a R-Pi sounds like a great idea.
